Too Many Friends To Count

"Ah! Hey guys!" Reno opened his door wider to greet his friends.

"Hey Reno!" They all greeted back in sync, you slowly said hello in a shy tone. There was a slight pause because in hearing a female's voice, Reno's face scrunched up. He stood on his tippy toes to see you behind the boys standing next to Astro, looking slightly uncomfortable. Reno gasped and shoved the three boys to the side to get a good look at you.

"A girl!" Reno concluded.

"Uhm... Reno? You're a bit close." Astro stepped in front of you and waved his hand in Reno's face to try and pry his eyes away from you. Reno's surprised expression turned into a pained one upon how Astro stood up for you.

"Damn it..!" Reno clenched his fists. "I can't believe Astro got a girlfriend before me..!" He gritted out as he scrunched his face up in utter defeat.

"Huh?" You shook your head, but before you could explain yourself, Astro did it for you.

"Reno, she isn't my girlfriend." Astro corrected his friend as he calmly petted the tall brunette's shoulder.

"Oh ho?" Reno turned around, "Oh really?" He grinned. "So you're single?" He peaked around Astro's shoulder.

"Uhm... Well... I guess so.." You leaned back as Reno leaned over Astro towards you.

"Reno!" Astro pushed him back. "Come on, let's see your new machine." He prompted and sighed with a shake of his head while Reno eagerly pulled you inside.

"So what exactly does it do?" Abercrombie asked, watching Reno pull a leaver that was connected to a large metal cylinder-like object.

"It changes the atoms and particles of robots and arranges them into whatever I want them to be!" He explained as he proudly puffed up his chest.

"Cool!" You explained with a smile, looking at a small screen that had code spread across it.

"So it's kinda like recycling?" Alejo confirmed as he also streamed his eyes across the code.

"More or less." Reno shrugged and nodded.

"Tried it on anything yet?" Kennedy wondered and looked at a big cylinder tank that was connected to an old car battery.

"Nah." Reno shook his head. "It's nowhere near ready." He walked up to the main computer and typed in another line of code as you and Alejo watched with a great amount of interest. "Right now I'm focusing on changing female robots to male and vice-versa." He turned away from the computer and moved to Kennedy who was staring at the abnormally large glass tank.

"And what's this for?" Kenedy tapped on the glass.

"That's the place the robots will sit while the machine is doing its thing." Reno pointed up to a thick black cord connecting the car battery to the computer and glass tank. "And this connects everything. But I'm trying to make it wireless." Reno looked back at Kennedy who was peaking inside the cylinder tank. "You can take a look inside if you want, the machine is shut off." Kennedy grinned at Reno and stepped inside.

You heard Reno's comment and also wanted to take a look inside. Kennedy had just stepped out so you took the time to look inside without getting in anyone's way.

As the others searched around the lab to look at interesting things, Abercrombie was walking around with his hands behind his back. As he looked over the interesting tools, his foot got caught on the main cable and he fell face-first onto the computer.

Just as you were about to leave the tank, the door slammed shut in your face, surprising you. "Huh? Reno? The door-" Before you could finish your sentence, a red light began to flash along with a small beeping sound. "R-Reno?" Your heart began to pound out of your chest as fear built up inside of you. This was not a good sign.

Everybody whipped their heads in your direction as Abercrombie shuffled back from the machine. Reno hurriedly jumped to the computer and looked over the controls while Astro began hitting the glass in an attempt to break you free. The others looked at you in pure shock as the glass you were in began to fill with smoke. Coughing erupted from your mouth and you clutched your lower stomach with a pained expression.

Reno hastily typed something into the computer and then banged his fist against it repeatedly. After some time, the lights had finally shut off and the beeping slowed to a stop.

Astro stepped back as the door slowly slid open and the mist in the room soon dissipated, leaving behind your standing figure. Except, something wasn't quite right. Instead of a young youthful girl, a young boy stood in your place. This sudden development shocked everyone to say the least, especially a certain scientific protege.

Reno fell to his knees in absolute despair as you stood before him with a slightly surprised but mostly unbothered expression on your face. You stepped out of the machine and looked back at it.

"NOOOO!! What happened to the sweet youthful girl from before!? Your hair, your face, your body! What happened to it!?" He cried with fresh tears escaping his eyes. You raised an eyebrow at him and looked yourself over.

"What's the problem? I don't feel anything wrong." Reno smacked his forehead and grinded his teeth together and pointed a timid finger in your direction.

"You're a guy now!" Reno clenched his hands. "I can't believe it! Who was the one who messed with my machine!?" He cried out. Abercrombie sucked in a sharp breath and slowly slid out of sight.

"A guy?" Your voice cracked as you said that. You looked down at your body, everything looked pretty much the same. You felt around your face; your jawline was much stronger and your hair was frizzier than usual. You then felt around your chest, sure there wasn't much there to begin with, but now it seemed awfully flat. You placed your hands on your hips, no curves. Suddenly your hands lowered to your... well... you know. A yelp of shock emitted from your mouth as you quickly pulled your hands away from your lower area. "T-There's something there!"

As Alejo and Kennedy began to give Reno grief about his stupid machine, Astro turned away from them and looked at you. There wasn't much of a change, but he could tell you had more boyish features, Since you were wearing feminine clothes, it didn't show much. Your flustered expression slightly calmed down, but your red cheeks still remained.

Astro walked up to you and looked you up and down. "You feeling okay?" He asked.

"A little shocked, but I don't feel unwell." You forced a delicate smile. At least your face hadn't changed too much, thank God.

Astro eyed you with a curious gaze.

"Your voice sounds deeper," Astro commented. You gasped and slapped your hands over your mouth.

"It does?" You clasped your hands around your neck and gulped. "Astro? Could you please tell me the time?" Your smile became a stressed one.

"It's around five-thirty. Why?" He cocked his head to the side. Your face physically paled and you frowned.

"I have to be home soon." You ran your hands through your hair in an attempt to soothe your nerves. A look of realization crossed Astro's face.

"Ah, I didn't think of that." Astro frowned. He was worried about the trials you'd need to surpass to make sure your family didn't realize you had magically switched genders. You placed your hand over your beating chest and took a deep breath. Astro noticed your anxious state and jogged over to Reno and tapped his back. "Reno?"

"Yeah?" Reno mumbled as he fished around inside of a cabinet, looking for a wrench and bolts to fix the blasted machine. He was so disappointed at this outcome.

"When will you be able to get (Y/N) back to normal? She's distressed." Astro glanced at you as did Reno. Kennedy, Abercrombie, and Alejo were talking to you and calming you down as best as they could.

"I don't know... It really didn't do what it was supposed to." He pulled on his collar to air his chest out. "Maybe... Three days?" Astro cringed. "Or two." Reno sighed and creased his brow with thought. "It's hard to tell."

Astro nodded. "I hope this doesn't make her hate us." Astro whispered as he cupped his own cheek and bit his bottom lip.

"Yeah, same here..."

~~~
"I should get going." You twiddled your thumbs.
"Do you want us to walk you home?" Kennedy asked, leaning on the bench you sat on.
"No, I'll be alright." The way you said that was like you were telling yourself instead of Kennedy.
"You think you can handle being a guy?"
"How hard can it be? I'll just wear baggy clothes." You shrugged and slipped off the bench.
"Well, we'll... see you tomorrow." Astro smiled frightfully.
"Sure." You waved to everyone and left the shed. Once you were out, you smiled, and this time you actually meant it. "What a nice bunch." You hiked up your school bag and began to journey off to your house. You could tell you'd get into many adventures with them by your side.
Meanwhile, inside the shed, everyone relaxed their muscles and let out a sigh. "She hates us now!" Abercombie yelped.
"She thinks we are total knobheads!" Alejo shook his head.
"She seemed so nice! And now because of your stupid machine, she's going to hate us." Kennedy grumbled.
"Hey!" Reno crossed his arms.
"Come on guys, let's not fight about this." Astro's pacifistic voice echoed through everyone's heads. "We should be helping Reno fix his machine."
Reno put his nose up. "Thank you, Astro." He turned away from the others and moved to his machine.
"Whatever..."
"I'm home!" You shouted whilst slipping off your shoes.
"Why are you so late missy?" Your mother popped her head around the corner from the kitchen.
"I uh... I was hanging out with some friends!" You smiled. Your mother began walking out of the kitchen while cocking a stern brow at you.
"Who are they? And why does your voice sound so deep?" She put her hands on her hips and leaned down to you.
"Reno, Abercrombie, Kennedy, Alejo and Astro!" You smiled happily and decided to avoid answering the question about your voice.
"They all sound like boy's names." You mother squinted her eyes.
"E-Eh? No way! Astro is uhm... A girl!" You pinched your hand for that lie.
"Hm, well, I expect to have them over soon. They'd better be appropriate for you." She stood up straight and walked back over to the kitchen, most likely to finish some cooking.
You let out a sigh of relief and tiptoed upstairs to hide away for the rest of the night. At least that way you would have a lower chance of getting noticed as a boy. You slowly shut your bedroom door and flopped onto your bed.
What a day.
