Never Seen A Tomboy Where A Skirt?
"Wake up!" Eliza yelled as she banged her fist on your door a few times, enough to wake you up. You shot out of bed, alarmed. It took you only a few seconds to realize what the loud noise was. You didn't hear her give you any instructions so you assumed she just needed to wake you up. Thank God she wasn't going to choose your clothes. That way you could avoid her seeing you change.
You rubbed your eyes in an attempt to wipe away the sleepiness that made you want to jump back into bed and sleep for another few hours. You groggily searched through your cupboard for a change of clothes that suited your mother's tastes but was also comforting to the male body.
"A pink jumper and... some baggy jeans." You smiled lopsidedly and quickly slipped on your clothes. Your sister's scarf would also come in handy since it's rather cold in the mornings.
After choosing some suitable clothes, you began to commence your daily routine. After you had brushed your teeth, brushed your hair and made your bed, your need for the bathroom arose. A sudden feeling of dread passed you and your checks began to feel hot. You almost forgot about your male body but you definitely remembered now. You gulped and your body stiffened as you marched yourself over to the toilet.
A minute or so later you stepped out of the bathroom and felt a shiver roll down your spine. You never wanted to take your pants down again. You took in a deep breath, straightened your back and made your way down downstairs and into the dining area.
"Good morning miss (Y/N)." Laura greeted. The sudden noise made you jump, but you calmed down quickly, noticing it was only your friendly robot maid.
"Good morning, Laura." You responded to her while finishing making yourself a quick bite to eat.
"Why are you in such a rush? Is something the matter?" She inquired.
"I'm going to school early." You mentioned. You then sighed in defeat, you couldn't find your bag anywhere. "Laura, do you have my bag?" You asked and turned around to face her. Well, she did. It was in her hands.
"Here." She handed it to you. "Why are you leaving early? If I may ask again." You decided to avoid answering her. You didn't want to lie to Laura so staying silent was the best option. "Your mother will ask me why, so I'd like to be able to tell her."
"Tell my mother I went early to join a club." You nodded. "I'll see you after school, Laura, goodbye!" You waved to her and made your way to the exit of the house. Laura waved to you as you left.
~~~
'What do I do now? I've come so early that nobody is here, only a few teachers.' You thought to yourself. 'Maybe I'll walk around to see where everything is.' You nodded and began your journey around the school.
As you arrived at the back of the school, you noticed there was a soccar field, but before you could see if anyone was playing, you heard someone scream.
"HEADS!" You sucked in a sharp breath as a ball whizzed passed your face, just missing it. This sudden occurrence made you stumble and fall to the ground with an 'oof' You blinked a few times, dazed, and looked up to see a group of boys running up to you. They all sported the same typical uniform which consisted of a yellow shirt with a matching pair of blue pants and a white cap. Each of them held a look of concern as they stared down at you.
"Woah! You okay?"
"Aw man, you're luckly that didn't hit you, mate!"
"Yeah, super lucky!"
"Here, let me help you up, bro." A tanned hand reached down to you. You gently took his kind gesture and the boy roughly pulled you up, making you almost lose balance again.
"What are you doing at school this early anyway?" Someone asked.
"W-Well-" you began.
"Say, you should come play soccar with us!" Another cheered.
"Yeah! You DO know how to play, right?"
"No, not exactly..." You squeaked. Suddenly, you felt judgemental eyes over you, making you shrink back.
"No way! You really need to come play with us then. What's your name anyway?" Your eyes widened slightly. They weren't going to belittle you for not playing soccer before?
"M-my name is-" Before you could speak, a familiar dark-skinned boy rushed out in front of you.
"His name is (B/N)!" You knew who that was, it was Kennedy. He was one of the friends you had made yesterday.
"Kennedy?" You glanced up at him.
"Hm, alright (B/N), come join us whenever you're ready!" After that, the team went back to the field to continue playing.
"Sorry about that, (Y/N)." Kennedy apologized as he rubbed the back of his head. "The only reason the others were being so nice to you was because they think you're a boy." He explained.
'Oh.' You thought, then nodded.
"They wouldn't have allowed you to play with them if they knew you were a girl. So, I kinda acted in the moment." He shrugged. "You sure you still want to play?" He asked.
"Sure?" You nodded. "I've never played a ball sport before. My Mom doesn't let me." You admitted and looked at everyone playing. "Since I haven't done this before, I might struggle a little and hold you back. Is that still okay?" You asked.
"For sure." Kennedy nodded and smiled at you. You returned his smile and brushed some hair out of your face. This made him frown. "Although, your hair might be a problem." He mentioned and rubbed the back of his head in thought. But instead of touching his hair, he felt fabric. Of course! He would give you his hat. "This might help." he moved behind you and tucked your hair underneath the cap, hiding it altogether. Kennedy took a step back and admired his handiwork. "Perfect! Now your hair won't get in the way of the game." He grinned. "Ready to play?"
"O-Oh, erm... Yes." You spoke with forced confidence. "I'm ready."
Once you started to play with the others, they had become super friendly with you and sometimes teased you, as if you were one of them. It was such a new feeling, and you... liked it! Kennedy helped you improve on your stance, taught you the rules and you really felt like you belonged with him and the other boys.
"Go on, (B/N)! Shoot your shot!" Kennedy called out as you dribbled the ball to the other team's goal.
You stared down the goalkeeper with intent. You really wanted to get this goal! adrenaline pumped through your veins as you made a running shot. All eyes were on you, it made you feel... Powerful. Once you got close to the goal, you pulled back your leg and kicked the ball as hard as you could. The goalkeeper put his arm out to stop the ball, but the ball barely touched his fingers. The ball whizzed past him and landed against the net.
You watched as the ball hit the net in the goal and come to a stop. Your eyes widened. You did it? You actually got a shot in? Before you could register what had just happened, the boys on your team came up to you and began showering you with compliments.
"Nice one, (B/N)!"
"Yeah! And for someone who hasn't played soccer before? You're a natural!"
"That kick was so strong!"
"You should come play with us every morning before school!"
Your face flourished with the color red as they talked about you in such a nice way. You began to shake and a giant smile forced its way onto your lips.
"T-Thank you, everyone. I will definitely come and play with you all again." You nodded and clasped your hands together.
"Who knows, maybe you'll get on the team." Kennedy walked up to you and patted you on the back. You looked up at him and relaxed.
"Yeah..."
~~~
"Man, that kick was so fast! the ball almost looked like a meteor." Kennedy laughed as he walked with you to class. For the entirety of the trip, you hid your face behind your hands out of embarrassment. "How come your kick was so strong?"
"W-Well... I do ice-skating, so I figured that would be the reason." You timidly responded while trying to stop your cheeks heating up any more.
"Huh, yeah." Kennedy tapped his chin in thought. "Ice-skating is super cool! I want to see you do it some time, I bet you'd be great!" When you had almost calmed down, Kennedy had to throw another compliment your way. Just great.
As Kennedy and you reached the classroom, he paused. You noticed that he had stopped walking and turned towards him questioningly. "Kennedy? Is something the matter?" You asked, confused by his sudden stop.
"You almost went in with that cap over your head. You look even more like a dude with it on, so let's pop it right off." He said as he took off the cap and placed it over his own head. "Alright, let's go in. I hope everyone is here today." Kennedy opened to door and let you walk in first. Class still hadn't started yet so you could sneak through the crowd and go to where the rest of your gang was.
"(Y/N)! Ken! Over here!" Astro waved to you both. In seeing where he and the other two where, you went to go join them.
"Hey, guys!" Kennedy waved to the three of them.
"Heya Ken. How come you and (Y/N) came into class together?" Astro questioned with a small smile.
"The team and I were teaching her how to play soccer." Kennedy pulled a seat and sat down around the desk everyone else was sitting at.
"Ken, I'm not sure that's allowed since she-" Astro began to protest.
"I know what you're thinking, Astro, but she's technically a boy right now. Soooo..." Kennedy winked at you.
"Alright... Well, I guess you win this time." Astro shook his head with a small smile.
"Guys, what subject to we have after homeroom?" Abercrombie asked while scratching the back of his head.
Alejo pulled a schedule out of his bag. "Erm... Cooking for two periods." He said as he adjusted his glasses.
"Awe man..." Abercrombie breathed and frowned.
Kennedy noticed his out of character disappointment and raised an eyebrow at him.
"What's up bud? I thought you loved cooking."
"Well... I do- when someone does it for me! We have to do a partner project and I bet you nobody wants to be my partner. Probably because of that time I burnt my cookie biscuits..." Abercrombie grumbled as he tapped the table.
"Abercombie?" Your soft voice rang through the conversation.
"Oh, yeah (Y/N)?" He turned to you and so did the others.
"I would like to be your partner." You stated with a slightly nervous smile.
"You would??" Abercrombie exclaimed and jumped up in glee. "Yes!" He grinned. "Wait- Can you cook?"
"Well..."
"(Y/N)! How is that cake coming along?" Your mother asked as she walked past you.
"G-Good Mom, it's going to be done soon." You said as you poured the cake batter into a tray and slid it into the oven.
"Good, good. Once that's done, you need to decorate the room." She told.
"Sure. I'll do that soon." You replied and checked to see if the oven was set at the right degrees. After you had placed the cake inside, you slid out a tray of cookies and set them down on a cooling rack. You looked down at the perfectly cooked sweets and smiled at your own work. You then began to place the cookies onto a plate, readying them for your family. Once you did that, you began to decorate the room for your sister's birthday.
After some time throwing confetti around, you put up a 'happy birthday' banner. Whilst putting it up, you fell off the ladder and fell to the floor with a good hard smack. You grunted in pain and sat up and straightened your back. A sharp pain then flared up in your spine, but you shook it off. You had to finish decorating!
Through the pain, you managed to set up everything. You had iced the cake and placed it on the table. It came out just how you wanted it to! Your mother wanted you to make a chocolate cake with white chocolate icing on the edges. You also had to make some more batches of icing to spell out Eliza's name. You added some more details to make the cake look even more appealing by adding white roses on the top of the cake. You decided to place a few cookies around the cake to make it even more appealing and appetizing to eat. Everything looked amazing!
You cleaned up the excess ingredients and straightened out the table and awaited the arrival of your sister, Eliza.
"Yo guys! Eliza is like- here right now!" Camie called out from upstairs. Everyone hurried from their rooms to the front door, waiting for Eliza to come in. Once she did, everyone cheered 'Happy birthday', making Eliza almost drop her phone.
"Ah- Thanks, everyone..." Eliza forced a smile. But she was clearly annoyed.
"Come, sit down dear. We baked you a cake." Your mother ushered everyone to the dining table where the cake sat. You ignored the fact she took credit for your work and hurried over to your family. Eliza was seated at the table and she looked down at the sweets with wide eyes.
"Wow... You guys did a lot for me." She breathed. A distasteful look then settled in on her face and she eyeballed the decorations. "I don't like how much you did. Jeez, you could've just given me a cake." She said. The others laughed, but you frowned. She didn't like the decorations you put up for her? Eliza took a slice of the cake and so did the others. You slowly took one and watched your phone addicted sister take a bite. She furrowed her brow. "Never mind, I don't even want this cake." She pushed it forward. Again, the others laughed.
"You're right. This cake is honestly too much for me." Your mother shook her head no. "perhaps we should go to a restaurant and get some food there."
Your eyes widened. Did nobody like the cake? Nobody liked your decorations either? You looked down at your lap, tears almost threatening to fall.
You strained to keep a smile on your face as you slumped forwards, obviously disappointed with yourself.
"I think my cooking can be too much sometimes." You replied.
"I don't mind! Just as long as you can make a cake!" Abercrombie stated and grinned at you.
"A cake?" You gulped. "Sure, I can give it a try." You smiled lopsidedly at him.
"Great! I can't wait for the next period."
~~~
You helped tie Abercrombie's cooking apron to himself so the both of you could start baking. "Okay, it's tied" You said and stepped back.
"Thanks, (Y/N). So! Any idea on what we want to bake?" He asked.
"A cake, Crombie." Kennedy laughed while bringing back some bowls to his and Astro's workbench (which was right in front of yours). "That's what we're all doing."
"I knew that! I meant- what type of cake!" He stuttered. Kennedy just laughed and shook his head.
"Well, since we're working together. We should both choose." You suggested and smiled at him.
"Hmm... Chocolate?" He suggested.
"Ah- apart from chocolate. I tend to mess up chocolate cakes." You replied while pulling out some cooking utensils from the draws under your bench
"Hmm... We should do something different." He rubbed his chin. "Since everyone is doing chocolate and vanilla, we should stand out!"
"Mh, good idea." You nodded. "And we want to please everyone, right? So one flavor won't do."
"You're a genius! Rainbow cake!" Abercrombie exclaimed. You smiled at his enthusiasm. When it came to food, he was oddly ecstatic.
"Shhh." You put one finger over your lips. "We don't want anyone to steal our idea." You warned him.
"Oh, right. Sorry." He whispered with a shy smile. "Well, what do we need first?" He asked.
"Let's start with a mixing bowl."
You and Abercrombie began making your cake together, you two honestly made a really good team. Since he was too afraid he would mess up the cake, he left the cooking and mixing up to you. And since you were doing the baking, Abercrombie would retrieve all the ingredients for you. You'd try to make him help out with the baking by letting him mix things, but he was too scared he'd ruin it. While you mixed some things together, the table in front of you began making small talk.
While Abercrombie was gathering some more ingredients, you leaned over your table and whispered to the two boys in front of you.
"Hey, why does Abercrombie not like mixing things?" You questioned. Both boys gave each other a nervous glance before snickering to themselves.
"Past experiences." This was all they said before they went back to their own work.
"How is everything going, (Y/N)?" Abercrombie questioned, making you jump.
"Fine," You stated. "I'm finishing up the strawberry layer, then next will be the blueberry. But I don't think we will be able to finish everything up by the end of the period." You frowned. "Do you think you can start the icing?"
Abercrombie scratched the back of his head. "I don't know..."
"Don't worry, I'll be right beside you." You encouraged and looked down at the pink cake mix. "I can help you if you think anything is wrong." You took out a tray and began to fill it with the cake mix. "Okay?" You looked up at him.
Abercrombie, feeling much better about it, nodded in agreement. "Okay."
While you began to make the last layer of the rainbow cake, Abercrombie began to start the icing. You told him what he needed, and left the rest up to him. You zoned out while shaping all the layers of the cake so it looked circular. Once you finished placing everything together, it was time to hide the cake with some icing.
"How is the icing, Abercrombie?" You glanced over to him and froze. The icing was a gross yellow color and was wet with fat from the butter.
"I think I did pretty good!" He proudly stated.
"Ah... Yes, I'll just add a bit more icing sugar and we should be good to go." You walked over to the bowl of icky paste. "We might need some dye. What color would you like it to be?"
"Hmm. White? No, light blue?" He hummed in thought. You noticed he was struggling to choose a color, so you chipped in with an idea.
"How about light blue? Since it's a rainbow, the icing could be rain." You began to fix the soggy icing by adding more icing sugar.
"That's such a great idea!" Abercrombie nodded. "Man, (Y/N), you are such a good cook!" He praised and grinned.
"O-Oh, thank you." Your cheeks became light pink at this compliment.
"I can't wait for the teacher to judge our cake." Abercrombie began to walk off to grab some blue dye. You frowned, Abercrombie might have liked it, but that's because he was so nice and he hadn't even tasted it yet. One the other hand, the teacher wouldn't go easy on you, she would say the same thing to you like your sister and mother did.
"(Y/N)??" You jumped up and out of your daydream. Astro had been calling your name. "Are you alright? You were spacing out, I got worried."
"O-Oh, mhm, I'm okay. Sorry for worrying you." You bowed your head slightly in apology.
"What were you thinking about?" He inquired and rested his arms on the workbench while facing you.
"Oh, nothing. I'm just getting nervous about showing the teacher what we made." You admitted and forced a regular smile.
"I wouldn't be worried if I were you." Astro cupped his face in his hands.
"Why is that?" You cocked your head to the side.
"I was watching you cook, and you looked like you were doing a really good job." Astro shon a closed eye smile at you.
'He was watching me?' You thought to yourself. You were pretty sure he didn't mean it in a creepy way, so you decided not to question him on his wording. Instead, you decided to bring up another topic. "Have you heard anything from Reno?" You asked, making Astro straighten his back, and look almost sympathetic.
"Sorry, (Y/N), I haven't. But we'll go visit him after school, okay?" Astro suggested. You nodded.
"That would be great."
~~~
You and Abercrombie mixed the icing with a few droplets of blue dye and began to smooth the icing all over the cake to hide the vivid colours. Abercrombie grinned and admired your teamwork.
"We did such a good job. Right, (Y/N)?" He turned to face you.
You placed your hands to your chest and gave him a soft smile. "Yeah..."
Then the bell went. You breathed in a sigh of relief. You wouldn't have to see the teacher eat your cake in a judgemental way.
"Alright class, go off to morning tea, Next lesson I will give out your marks." Your teacher waved you all off. And with that, the class was empty.
"Crombie, (Y/N)!" Alejo waved to you guys and ran up to you. "What cake did you guys do?"
"Rainbow!" Abercrombie grinned. "Too bad we didn't get to eat it though." He sighed and shook his head.
"I'm sure we'll be able to eat our cake next lesson. If not, I'll make you another one Abercombie." You shyly commented.
"Hey! There is Astro and Ken!" Alejo called out. "Let's go join them."
All recess, you and the four other boys talked about random things, laughed and ate together.
"Yeah, it's in a week or two. I wonder what we should all go as." Kenney tapped his chin.
"We can chat about it more with Reno."
"Aw man, we have maths next!" Abercrombie cried. "(Y/N), you're good at everything, right? Please be my partner again!" His voice was winy and desperate.
"I'm not sure." You shyly shrugged. "My Mom said I need to get really good grades otherwise I'll be going back to my girls-only school."
"You won't be getting good grades from teaming up with Crombie!" Kennedy snickered.
"I think you'd better be off with Alejo. He's really smart!" Astro admitted.
"Aw, you guys are too nice." Alejo chuckled. "But they aren't wrong, I do usually get good grades."
"Then would it be alright if we were partners? N-Not that I just want you for your good grades!" You shook your head and put your hands up in defense.
"Don't worry about it, I understand where you're coming from." He told in an attempt to calm you down.
~~~
"Alejo? I'm not sure I got this working out correctly." You mumbled and looked down at your paper. Alejo leaned over to look at your answer.
"Remember, you have to times the denominator by the numerator." Alejo pointed to your fractions.
"Oooh." You nodded and began to erase your working out. "Thanks a bunch."
"You're welcome. I don't mind, nobody really listens to me when I try and tutor them. So it's refreshing knowing someone is listening to me." He smiled.
"It's refreshing for me too. Since I don't get a lot of help from my siblings or parents with this kind of stuff, I like to know someone is willing to help me out." You began to work on your next problem.
"Huh, I guess we both complement each other then." He said and smiled down at his paper.
"I guess we do." You agreed. "Oh, do you have a calculator I could borrow?"
"Sure."
From the other side of the room, Astro sat with Kennedy and Abercrombie as he helped the two out with their work.
"Hey Astro, (Y/N) is getting along well with everybody." Kennedy said and nudged his friend in the side.
"Yeah. I'm really happy for her. She seemed so lonely when I first talked to her." He smiled in your direction as you began chatting with Alejo. "It's like she's brighter now." He admitted. His face then fell slightly. "I don't know why, but...I feel weird..."
"Woah there, pal," Abercrombie nudged the other side of Astro's hip. "Don't get too friendly now."
"Oh come on, Crombie, don't tease Astro like that." Kennedy stepped in. "We just want her to be our friend, okay?"
"Okay, I get it." Abercrombie put his hands up in defense.
~~~
"See you guys later!" Astro waved to the three boys as they all left in their own directions. "So, (Y/N), ready to go see Reno?" He asked. You nodded and smiled at him.
"Yeah, let's go. I hope he won't be too annoyed with me nagging him about the machine." You admitted. Astro gave you a questioning gaze.
"You've been nagging him?" Astro furrowed his brow in confusion.
"Mh, Kennedy told me Reno wanted my number. So I gave it to him to hand to Reno." You replied. "We talked a bit about the progress of his machine and I said we were coming to his house after school."
Astro cringed. Reno was trying something and he would for sure give him a stern talking to. "Well then, let's get going. I have something to say to him anyway." He smiled.
You and Astro made your way over to Reno's workshop. On the way, the two of you chatted a bit about how you liked your new school, what you thought of everyone and things like that. Once you had arrived, Astro knocked on the door. A second flew by and so did Reno's door.
"Hey guys, come in." Reno greeted and smiled with a wave.
"Good afternoon." You entered his workshop.
"Hi, Reno." Astro greeted back as he walked in after you.
"Now I know what you're going to ask, (Y/N), and I've been working really hard, so if you come to see me tomorrow morning I'll have it done by then." He said.
"That's great, Reno!" Astro exclaimed.
"Thank you, Reno!" You thanked. "Sorry about the problems I've caused you." Reno waved off your apology and grabbed his mug.
"Ah, don't worry yourself too much." He said and took a sip of his coffee. "This kinda stuff is my hobby, so I enjoy working hard on machines."
"Say, Reno, you should show (Y/N) some of your blueprints." Astro suggested.
"Good idea, Astro." Reno nodded in agreement. He put down his coffee and showed you some blueprints hidden in a draw. "These are a few robots that I'm going to suggest to the ministry of science.
"You can do that sort of thing? Will they take you seriously?" You questioned with wide eyes.
"Just because I'm a little on the young side, doesn't mean they don't take me seriously." He chuckled. You nodded, that was something you had to remember.
"Oh. I see." You pointed to another blueprint. "Is this... A dolphin?" You asked.
"This is a robot I came up with a while ago. You should meet him, I'm sure he'd like you." Reno grinned at you.
"That would be great." You looked at the dolphin-like robot's blueprints in awe. Reno designed this? How amazing!
"Hey Reno, could I talk to you for a second?" Astro called him over.
"Yeah, one sec." Reno told you that you could look at as many robot blueprints as you wanted while he was talking to Astro. Reno then got up and walked over to him. "What's up, bud?"
"Okay. Reno, I know how you feel about (Y/N)." Reno flinched. "I just don't think you should try and flirt with her as much as you do."
"Astro-" Reno was cut off.
"I know you got her number through Kennedy, but I feel like if this continues- you might make her uncomfortable." Astro looked down and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Astro." Reno was once again ignored by the robot boy's ramblings.
"I mean, the first time you saw her, you began to flirt with her. I'm pretty sure she feels alone right now and barely knows anyone. I really doubt she's looking for a boyfriend- I guess I just wish you would think of her as a family member or something, like a long lost sister. She really just needs a close friend, not a-"
"Astro!" Reno finally cut Astro off. "I don't have a crush on her!" He whisper-shouted.
"What-?"
"The reason I was 'flirting' with her was to make the other guys laugh. I haven't done it since then. And with the whole number thing- I knew she would want to talk about the machine with me. And sometimes, it gets a little lonely for me, okay? You guys are off at school a bunch and whenever one of you can't hang out, none of you can. So, I thought having her as a friend of my own would be nice- Like a little sister or whatever you said before." Reno explained and voiced his thoughts. He then poked Astro in the stomach. "And do you remember a certain princess?" He asked sternly, then crossed his arms. "I wouldn't forget about her, alright?"
"Okay, okay! I'm sorry, I misjudged you." Astro said and bowed his head in apology. "I don't know why I thought what I did." He mentally scolded himself.
"Why are you so protective over her anyway?" Reno questioned. The two boys turned towards you and eyed you with curiosity as you studied the blueprints with wonder.
"I don't really think I am." Astro shrugged. "I always worry for humans, I just suppose this time I'm worried about a human's mental wellbeing, not physical..."
~~~
Reno let out one last goodbye before shutting his door and heading back inside. As for you and Astro, he began to walk you home. You two chatted about many topics. You talked about baking, playing soccer, maths, you rambled on about your time with your new friends and how you enjoyed it. Astro was glad to hear you had a good time.
"Well, thank you for walking me home, Astro." You turned and smiled at him. "I'll see you tomorrow." You waved to him and began to walk up to your house.
Astro watched you with a smile as you entered your home and waved to you. He then let his hand drop to his side and turned his back to your house. He was glad that you had been getting along with his friends, it was nice to see.
From inside of the house, you leaned on the front door and smiled brightly to yourself. Another great day with your new friends. You didn't want anything to ever change. Your sisters watched you with confusion as you skipped up the staircase, forgetting about your mother's 'no fun' rules.
