Cop Car, Keith Urban
We drove right past
That no trespassing sign
Lily looked to her left. Trent Malloy sat straight back as stiff as could come. He had one hand lazily on the steering wheel, in his cherry red convertible mustang, at the stop light. A small smile slipped on to his lips as he switched his lazy hand to the left and reached over grabbing Lily's hand.
This was their song.
No it wasn't cheesy and one of those teenage relationships, 'oh my gosh this is like totally our song!'
No it was nothing like that at all.
A few months ago:
Trent was woken up in the middle of his sleep with a phone call that would send him on one of the biggest adventures he had ever been on. He tried to get to the phone as quickly as possible in his hazy wake-me-up-at-this-time-again-and-I-will-murder-you-in-your-sleep phase.
He heard his sister shuffle and turn a little bit in her sleep two doors down. He was after all in his Mom's home, as to stay close to his family. He waited a moment before answering the home phone.
"Hello?" A scared voice asked.
"Lily?" Trent replied slightly shaken she had woken him up at this time of night.
"Oh my gosh! Trent, is there any possible way you can come over?"
He looked at the clock.
"Right now?"
She sighed heavily. "Never mind, it's okay. I'll be fine."
"I'll be there in a few."
She sighed happily this time.
"You're the best."
With that she had hung up leaving a confused, tired, and startled Trent. Now for the next problem. How to get out of the house without waking up his family.
He saw his window was still slightly ajar from earlier. He had been letting air cipher through the house as his Mom almost burned down the kitchen two days ago. The smoke was gone, but the smell lingered.
Trent slowly moved the covers off of him and he shuttered as the air came in contact with his flannel pants. He saw his jeans laying on the ground and quickly traded them in for his Goofy pants. Luckily, he left his boots right under his bed after coming back from a very hard day at the martial arts studio. He had more white belts than ever and he had to test many red belts and green.
He stood at the cracked window after finally getting ready to meet his girl. He slipped his finger tip under the window slide and pulled up. He winced at the slight cracking and moving of the chipped paint and rusted panes.
Just as he had finally pulled it high enough to leave his door opened swiftly with a swoosh. Trent looked like a deer in the headlights when he saw his oldest younger brother come in.
"What are you doing, Trent?" He asked rubbing sleep out of his eyes.
"What are you doing here, Tommy?"
"I asked first."
Trent sighs. "I gotta go see Lily. Something happened I don't know what."
"But mom won't let you go out this late." Tommy protested.
"I know that's why I'm going through the window. Don't tell and just go to bed
alright? I'll be back in a few hours tops."
Tommy shrugged. "Alright, fine. Just be back soon."
"Promise."
With that Trent was disappearing into the night.
Trent's truck was parked a good half mile away from Walkers house. Did I forget to mention her fathers name is Cordell Walker?
He saw Lily wrapped in a small blanket walking towards the truck. She went around back and jumped into the passenger seat. You could still see the house in the moonlight. Trent decided to play it safe and put the car into drive. He took it easy on the speed as to not kick up dust and wake Walker up.
Lily stared blankly in front of her as they went a few more miles away and Trent slowly gained speed. Finally, after twenty minutes of driving, past trespassing signs and down every back road Trent could think of he pulled over next to an airport sign and looked at her. She knew what the unspoken signal meant. She got out and went around the back of the truck at the same time Trent did. He lowered the tailgate and hopped up. They watched as a planes lights flickered on and Lily couldn't help but feel a little bit of the adrenaline that had come every time they saw a plane take off. This was their thing. They told each other everything on the back of a muddy blue pick up truck behind a barb wired fence. It wasn't clean. It wasn't perfect. But it was theirs.
We sat on the tailgate
And watched the planes take off
Lily finally met Trent's eyes in the moonlight and couldn't help, but fall all over again. "I'm sorry I woke you up, Trent."
"Lily, it'a fine. Alright? Now tell me what's the matter."
"I guess it's kind of silly. I had a nightmare and no matter what I did I couldn't shake it. I knew you'd take my mind off of it."
Trent nodded. "Tell me about it."
"You and Carlos were walking down an alley. You two were joking around about one thing or another when suddenly men came around the corner. They took you guys hostage and I couldn't do anything. Daddy and I looked for days trying to find you guys. By the time we did it was too late. I arrived home and you were leaning against the opening door. You had blood all over you. I-I-di-didn-" she started to sob uncontrollably.
Trent didn't hesitate and immediately scooted over to Lily.
"Hey. I got you, I'm not goin any where."
He continued to shush her as she pressed her face harder into his leather jacket he grabbed on his way out. After what seemed like only a few minutes she calmed down and once again blankly stared ahead. Only to be met with his black jacket. Though she didn't seem to notice it. She stared as if she could see right through him.
Trent ran his fingers through her hair. Her soft locks weaved in between his fingers like a loom.
Finally, he shook her gently and said, "How about we go running around, hmm? I know some good mud holes and places we could go mudding at. Thunder owned them before he died and they belong to my mom now."
For the first time that night Lily smiled and nodded excitedly. She took her head from Trent's lap and he slid over to the drivers side of the already muddy truck.
Trent put the gear into Auwheel drive as they neared the empty field, full to the brim off muddy water from the spring weather and the iragations going over it every once and a while.
We thought we had all night
There was no need to rush
The mud was flying higher than the truck and it seemed to rain back down on to them. Trent went through a rather large one and just as he was pulling out of it he hit the shore in the middle causing them to kick out of the hole with a hard thud. It was as if it was laughing at them and proud it had hit the two back after its perfect still water was ruined. Trent couldn't help but laugh.
That's when those cops
came pulling up.
Trent's laugh was cut off when they saw blue lights heading their way. Lily shared a look of confusion with Trent.
The car stopped at the edge of the muddy wound of tire tracks. He took out a blow horn. "You! Come here or we will be forced to use extreme measures."
Trent and Lily shared another look before getting out in the knee deep mud. They were in the middle of another hole when they arrived. Lily slipped slightly and Trent caught her, but just barely and the cops were getting trigger happy. A shot fired right next to them and it was clear the cop had meant to shoot them. "Now the next one will be you. Put those hands up!" He quickly saved himself.
"What's this about officer?" Lily asked.
"You know what this is about, Sandra. You too Mickey. You are both escaped convicts which we are bringing in."
And I thought
Man, ain't this some shhh
"Are you kidding? We aren't convicts. I'm a PI and she's a Texas Ranger." Trent tried to reason.
"Like I'm gonna believe that crap." The cop responded.
"We really are, officer. I am Ranger Lilian Walker and this is Private Investigator Trent Malloy."
"You got proof?"
Trent patted his clothes and realized he had nothing on him. His phone was at home right next to his wallet and badge.
Lily soon discovered the same thing. Her gun and badge was left at home as she had been too terrified to think much of it.
The officer smirked. "Alright. Sandra, Mickey please come this way."
Lily followed Trent's movements and leaned against the cop car causing it to get muddy. Not that the cop noticed. He was too excited on catching the infamous Mickey and Sandra.
"You know what?" Trent asked Lily who was fuming.
"What?"
"Walkers goin to kill me."
Your daddy's gonna kill me
But if I survive tonight
I wouldn't change one thing
I know it sounds crazy
She laughed. But still Trent couldn't help but admire her eyes shining as the lights flashed across them. Her hair was slightly in her face, but she anything but noticed. She was caked in mud, but that only made her more beautiful.
But there was something bout the way
The blue lights were shinin
"Do you think we could run?" Lily asked knowing full well if her father caught her out this late she'd regret it. Her eyes shined slightly mischievously.
Bringing out the freedom in your eyes
I was to busy watching you
Going wild child
To be worried about going to jail
You were thinking that
Running for it
Would make a good story
Trent looked at her surprised but smiling slightly.
I was thinking you were crazy as hell.
And you were so innocent
She didn't look scared or worried. She looked young at that moment and for a second Trent could've swore on oath she was having a good time. What he didn't realize was that every time he looked at her and every time she looked at him, they both fell a little harder for each other.
But you were stealing my heart
I fell in love in the back of a cop car.
The cop seemed to realize we "were dangerous convicts" and had no cuffs on. He pulled them out and put them on rather harshly. Trent finally realized how serious this was. But the though was away faster than he had time to look into it thoroughly.
Man, they weren't playin
They sure threw those cuff on quick
Trent tried to suppress his laughter when Lilian tried to talk nice to the officer but was quickly losing her temper. It HAD been a stressful night after all. For her at least. Trent was still having a good time just being with her and making memories. "Come on, mister. How about a little leeway? At the very least let me use the phone." She batted her eyes. Trent shook his head at his girl.
You tried to sweet talk em
They didn't fall for it, but I did
Finally the cop got a grip on himself and threw his prisoners, quite literally, into the back of the cop car. Trent sat on the right
and Lily sat on the left.
You were on the left
I was on the right
Lily decided if she was going to spend the night with a cop she, at the moment, hated more than anything, was going to act the part of the criminal. Trent really did laugh loudly when Lily asked the cop through the door just before he slammed the door. "You got a lighter?"
I knew you didn't smoke
When you asked him for a light
And I laughed
He got mad and slammed the door
Trent elbowed her slightly and she laughed back at him. She stared back at him for the longest of moments. Trent leaned in slightly and kissed her ever so softly. The cop opened the door and decided on a single phone call. He threw it in and gave them five minutes.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Carlos. I need a favor."
Your daddy's gonna kill me
But if I survive tonight
I wouldn't change one thing
Baby, yeah
I know it sounds crazy
But there was somethin' bout the way
The blue lights were shinin'
Bringing out the freedom in your eyes
I was too busy watching you
Going wild child
To be worried about going to jail
You were thinking that
Running for it
Would make a good story
I was thinking you were crazy as hell
And you were so innocent
But you were stealing my heart
I fell in love in the back of a cop car
Trent wrapped an arm around Lily and she snuggled up real close. They sat as possibly close as they waited for their savior. He sure was taking a while though. But Trent couldn't help but feel grateful. He took care of his girl and she was alright now.
Oh and you were like oh oh oh
Side by side
And locked in tight
They were taking their time
But we didn't mind
A tap on the window startled them out of their thoughts. Carlos opened the door. "Well look what the cat dragged in."
"Thanks man. I owe you one." Trent replied with a handshake.
Carlos backed up. "Have you two seen yourselves. You look like you just went through World War II."
They laughed and the cop left rather embarrassed. Soon Carlos was leaving and the sun began to rise.
"Walker really IS going to kill me."
The two jumped into the truck and drove off flinging mud up as they went.
We talked, we laughed
We sat real close
By the time they let us go
I was already gone
Trent dropped Lily off and drove home trying to get back before breakfast started.
Trent scrambled up the side of the house and onto the garage roof. Before cutting across to his room and slipping through the window. He entered and he was met by Tommy.
"You look like crap."
"Thanks, bro." Trent said with the biggest smile he's had in awhile.
"Come on! We're going to be late." His mother called up the stairs.
Trent took his dirty clothes off and tried to get the mud out of his hair. "You look fine now come on!" Tommy ushered his brother out the door and down the steps.
"Oh hello, Tommy, Trent. How did you sleep, Trent?" His mother asked getting his younger siblings ready to go somewhere.
"Great! Better than I have in a long time."
Tommy smirked. It wasn't a lie. They did at one point in the night fall asleep waiting on Carlos.
"Where are we goin?" Trent asked.
"Walker asked us over for breakfast. He said he was trying out a new recipe."
"Who will be there?"
"Oh just, Trivette, Carlos, us, Alex, Uncle Ray, Lily. Why?"
"No reason."
As they exited the house Trent's mom gasped.
"What, mom?"
"What happened to your truck?!" She yelled rather loudly.
Tommy laughed. Trent glared. "Oh I went mudding last night. Not a big deal. I was just to tired to hose it off."
Trent's mother sighed and rolled her eyes. Before they knew it they were all eating an amazing omelette and laughing.
Trent had to drive his truck seeing as their was no room for him in the small car his mother had.
After a long breakfast Walker stood to let his guests out when he accidentally kicked a boot. Lily's boot. Lily's muddy boot. "Lilian, where in earth did you get so much mud on your boots?" He looked at her.
Trent's mother responded after noticing the mud in Trent's hair. "Where did YOU get all the mud in your hair?"
Carlos and Tommy smirked and laughed. Everyone stared at Trent who just responded with a few simple words and a shrug of the shoulders.
"I fell in love in the back of a cop car."
"Trent. Trent!" Lily said waving her hand in front of his face.
"Green light."
He laughed slightly.
Tell.me. How. You. Like. It.
