[19] A Mystery To Solve

"Guess who cooked today," Jason's eyes flashed with a mischievous spark and Tim immediately put on his best attempt at a disgusted face.

"Jason, why...?"

"Damn right, I cooked. Now suffer," he filled up a plate and placed it down in front of Tim who was still pretending to be very disappointed to find out that he would be eating dinner cooked by Jay.

Dora and Mona exchanged a knowing glance because both of them knew Tim's heart was doing somersaults in joy. It was a wonder how he still managed to keep his expression from showing the delight he felt inside.

"Like I know you are always so busy with no time to spare then why did you have to go the extra mile and do this all for me?" Tim spoke up, forking at the food as of he wasn't going to eat it.

Jason shrugged, "I can go to great lengths to see you suffer. This was nothing."

He filled up his spoon and put it in his mouth then kept his expression very somber, disguising the fact that he enjoyed the taste, "happy now?"

"Very," Jay replied, the grin on his face widening even more.

"Oh come on, Tim, it's delicious," Steph remarked, "Jay is a wonderful cook."

"We clearly have different taste in food then."

"Awful taste if you find this heavenly assortment any different," Steph remarked.

Jay spoke up, "thank you, Steph, for the generous compliment. It's too much coming from you but I'll take it."

The rest of the family was amusedly watching Tim attempting to eat the food with difficulty while only Dora and Mona knew how great of an actor he was and the scene playing out in front of them was fake.

"I hate you," Tim remarked sourly to Jay after dinner.

"The feeling is mutual, bro," he laughed, ocean eyes twinkling playfully as his hand clapped Tim on the back as usual.

After dinner, the entire family had gathered to hear from the newly wed couple about their trip and as expected, they had a lot of stories to tell. Mona made them promise to take her to those places as well because she was very fond of nature too and hadn't yet gotten to see such colorful spring season that Dora had described.

Back at the League's base in Nanda Parbat, the weather had always been extremely cold and in Gotham, it was always damp and gloomy. Spring was almost nonexistent in the dark city.

Not so surprisingly, Damian conveniently stayed out of sight for the entire evening since he knew very well that he would be in for a thorough investigation. However, when he did catch Mona alone in the kitchen for a short time, he had quite a long discussion with her full of what she should expect from him if she ever snitched up on him like that again.

And ever since then Mona hadn't left Dora's side, not wanting to give Damian any opportunity to catch her alone and implement either of the threats he had given her.

Night had fallen when the Drakes finally returned to their home; the cozy little apartment near Dora's Coffee Haunt. It had gotten late so Dora decided to go to Alex's place in the morning.

She knew he would be tired since it was the weekend and the shop had double the influx of customers on Saturdays and Sundays.

Right then, Tim and Dora were both in Mona's room in order to put her off to bed like usual.

"I missed this so much," Mona remarked, snuggling closer to Dora who was gently stroking her hair while Tim had closed the storybook he had just been reading out to them.

"We told you a lot about our trip but you didn't tell us how you spent your time here," Dora remarked.

"I had fun. Everyone was really nice to me and I made sure not to annoy them... Well, except for Damian because that's a habit now and can't be helped."

Tim added, "I'm glad you and Damian didn't cause some major hazards though."

Her blue eyes twinkled playfully, "oh no, there were hazards. We just sorted it all out before you both came."

"Proving again that you're a mini Tim," Dora said with a light laugh.

"There's one thing that's still a bit unclear to me right now," he spoke up, recalling the antics before dinner, "why were you teasing him about Tyler?"

Mona deadpanned at that question, "I was not teasing him, Baba."

"You weren't?"

"I wasn't," she replied but it was easy for them to see through it.

"Tim, let it be."

But he was adamant on getting to the bottom of the mystery, "Mona, you know something we don't, right?"

"No..."

"Why aren't you telling us?"

Dora took in a deep breath, seeing both father and daughter stubbornly sticking to their decisions, "Tim, Mona, come on... Leave the topic."

Mona spoke up, "I'm not telling anything because if I did, Damian would take my eye out."

"Pfft, he wouldn't dare," Tim remarked breezily, recalling the talk he and Damian had had often regarding the topic of what he should expect if he ever hurt Mona.

He knew Damian gave threats but would never actually act upon them since he valued his life and wouldn't want to be chased down by an angry Tim Drake. He had learnt his lesson from countless past experiences.

"Oh no, he would. He told me himself that he took Mara's eye out once while she was being annoying to him," the little girl shuddered, "I would rather not take the risk."

"Mara?"

"A cousin of ours," she added, "she doesn't live with the League anymore though."

"To be honest, I hadn't known it would be this serious, whatever you were teasing Damian about," Dora stated.

Mona looked up at her, nodding her head slightly, "it just slipped. I shouldn't have said that."

Tim, who had no aptitude of patiently waiting for the mystery to unfold and had a tendency of figuring things out himself, spoke up, "alright then, don't tell us anything. I bet I'll find out by tomorrow anyway."

Her blue eyes widened in alarm, "Baba, no..."

He got off the bed but leaned down again to gently kiss her forehead, "good night, princess. Sweet dreams."

"But where are you going...!"

"I have a mystery to solve," Tim winked before disappearing out the room.
