Chapter 7: Flash Back
The night Lily announced she was pregnant with the twins was the most stressful day of my life at work. Two staff members rang in sick, the assistant chef decided not to show up -while on his final warning- and half the town chose to parade through our doors. It was Lily's first day off in six days so I didn't want to disturb her by yanking her down there, but as I walked into the kitchen, seeing her in her regular chirpy mood, I really wished I did.
I wasn't in the mood for talking, let alone her over-the-top dancing to music that filled the entire kitchen with an annoying, echoing bang.
Remarkably, when I saw her, dancing in her dressing gown while frying some bacon, I wasn't that annoyed anymore. I was annoyed that I had the day from hell while she was doing God knows what, but she always managed to erase that tiny resentment.
She had her back to me, swinging her hips like a dramatic Vegas act. I leaned against the doorway with my arms folded, grinning to myself.
She turned, bouncing her bum sideways, and then gave me a huge smile, not bothered that I was standing there watching her. "Hi baby!" She said, still flapping her body to the music.
"It's a bit loud!" I shouted over the music.
"What?" she shouted back, swinging her hair back and forth.
"The music!"
"What about it?" she said while grinning, pumping her hands in front of her.
She still danced good for a woman that had broken her ankle. It never stopped her. It just stopped her from doing it professionally.
I walked over to the radio and turned the music down, making her glare at me with the 'death' eyes that I was used to being terrified of.
"Come sit down." Her serious lips turned into a sudden, excited smile. "I made bacon."
"I'm not really in the mood for bacon. I've had a long day and-"
I stopped myself from finishing that because she was doing the 'dangerous death' eyes that I definitely couldn't defy. She pulled out a chair from the table and pointed to the place setting.
"I guess one sandwich won't hurt." I gulped.
I took the seat she mentally trapped me into, and I yawned, rubbing my temple as she plated up the bacon sandwiches. She started dancing again and I stared at her legs as she hummed along to the quiet song from the other side of the kitchen. She twirled around, carrying two plates which wobbled in her hands as she bounced up and down, which was normal for her, so I didn't think anything of it.
She placed mine in front of me and pulled out a chair across from me. I wasn't really paying much attention to any of this. I yawned again and gently picked up the larger than average sandwich on the plate, trying to avoid her strange glare at me. I brought the sandwich to my lips, and then I saw something odd poking out of it.
"What is-?" I started to say, but then I really looked at it and I held my breath. I picked at the end of the white stick and I pulled it from my sandwich, seeing a pregnancy test with two perfect straight lines.
I stared over at Lily and to my absolute surprise, she wasn't smiling anymore. She gave me a look of pure seriousness and a single tear dropped down her cheek. "I'm pregnant."
My mouth dropped open. "I nearly ate this!" I shrieked at her. "You peed on that thing!"
She narrowed her eyes and then it hit me. It hit me fast and thunderous, causing me to drop the sandwich.
"You're pregnant?" I said quietly.
She nodded her head and her voice fell so quiet that I almost didn't recognize her. She burst out into happy tears. "I'm pregnant"
I jumped out of my seat, and she jumped out of hers and familiar excitement escalated through her bones. She dived on me with so much joy and love that she almost suffocated me with her embrace.
"We're going to be parents!" she said, randomly jumping and down as her arms tightened around my neck. "Parents!"
"Yeah," I said. "I know what it means."
She leaned back, giving me a frown. "Aren't you happy? We've been trying for so long, it's finally happened."
"I'm not. . . really sure. Are you happy?" I laughed sarcastically.
She grinned so wide. "Of course. We're going to have a family. We're going to be a family. Oh god, we're going to be parents."
I rubbed my finger across her lips, pushing it into a smile. She fluttered her beautiful, blue eyes at me and it washed away the fear she had just made me face head on within a matter of seconds. "We're going to be parents," I said, smiling.
She let out another squeal and I picked her up, spinning her around in the air. When I put her back down, she was out of my embrace in seconds and dancing again. She spun around me, smiling to herself, lost in the happiest moment I'd ever seen. She looked so radiant, like she was glowing, she always glowed, but not like that. That was different.
That was the start of an adventure.
