PART ONE
SNOWY WINTERS WERE NEVER DANIEL'S FAVORITE. The cold stung at his skin, piercing his face with its vicious vengeance.
The snow was black. It flew gently in the air, collecting in small piles at his feet. It was peaceful, but the reason it fell was horrific. Unlike normal snow, this one burned and glowed in front of his eyes. The orange embers reflected their lights into his mocha-hued irises.
For once, the snow was warm, but it hurt. It stung and clung to his skin. Daniel cupped his ears with his hands, trying to ignore the ring that embodied his entire eardrum.
Hazel's screams were nearly silent. He watched her mouth make the motions, but he could barely hear the noises. She kept hitting her hands against another body, whose face Daniel could not entirely see.
He looked around at the battlefield, observing the broken people in his vicinity. Tears ran down Hazel's beet red face, her eyes scrunched together to hold back louder wails. Daniel also noticed the black snow collect on his skin, coating his arms in dust.
Daniel wanted to look away, or to maybe just close his eyes and pray that this wasn't real. He wanted to be okay with the sight surrounding him, but it unnerved him when Hazel continued to scream.
She looked Daniel in the eyes, a sorrowful gaze filling her cerulean orbs. Her pale fingers clutched the shirt of the body underneath her, the digits woven into the ashy cloth like a knitter with their crochet.
Only one word came from the girl's lips. He could not hear her say it, but she watched her lips move. It was one that made Daniel crack himself, tears springing to his eyes and carving rivers through the mountains of his cheeks.
"Why?"
