Chapter nineteen * Care to join the party?
The girl crouches down, under shock and panic. She grabs her head in her hands.
"Hey hey hey", he calmly calls, kneeling down to her level, keeping his cold blood. "Let's not jump to conclusions here, he could have gone for a jog, or something..."
She shakes her head.
"I don't think we have the luxury to be optimistic," she glumly expresses, her throat tight. "No one would want to leave their house with this weather..."
"Do you have any clue to where he could have been taken?" he rationally thinks, looking around the home. "There is not one single sign of a struggle, the house is incredibly tidy."
"Just like his person," she notices, thoughtful. "The only place I can think of is the one where I was taken to... But the probabilities are so small considering it'd be stupid to use the same location twice."
"We never know," he points out. "I wouldn't think it's stupid, and actually rather smart, because we wouldn't think to check out the obvious spot. We should ask the neighbors. Get up."
He offers her a helping hand she ignores, still sour from his stunt in the car. He rolls his eyes behind her back as she steps outside. They observe the surrounding houses, five in total would have been able to see anyone go or come out of Christian's house, Annela counts.
"I'll ask the houses on the sides," she claims. He nods and directs himself to the house next to the one facing the target's own. The house on the left seems empty, no car parked in the alley. Annela opens her mind and confirms her guess efficiently. She walks towards the one on the right, nicely decorated with a well-kept garden. A rich floral diversity colors the front yard. She knocks on the front door, keeping an eye on Evandro, fast walking towards the house in front of Christian's. An old man opens the door.
"Hello, how may I help you?" he inquires, pulling her eyes off the young man.
"Good morning sir, so sorry to bother you," she politely starts. "But I was just wondering if you saw where your neighbor in that house leave anywhere?"
"No... sorry miss. Something happened?"
She keeps her shoulders from drooping desperately, plastering a polite smile on her lips.
No need to worry. You'll close your door and forget my encounter, she orders. She spins on her heels and joins Evandro, resting his hand on the door frame under which a teenage girl looks up at him flickering her eyelashes at the young man. She facepalms herself. He shouldn't be wasting the precious time during which Christian's life is at stake. She keeps her distance, but opens her mind to hear what is happening. She enters the gawking thoughts of the fifteen year old girl, completely invaded by Evandro, struggling to keep his hilarity in.
"Is she your girlfriend?" the teenager asks, jealousy itching a corner of her mind. He takes quick a glance over his shoulder, an amused smile unveiling his white pearls.
"Yeah," he unexpectedly answers. She keeps her jaw from dropping. The red headed girl quiets down, her flashy pink dress clashing horribly with the color of her hair. Her thoughts momentarily focus on one feeling and makes it easier for him to access her subconscious memories. Both of the Controllers see a group of around twenty people from the corner of the eye of the young girl as she scrolls through her phone. Further in the chronology of her memories, the two young agents see through her eyes a few cars driving off towards the East of the city.
"Well thanks for your help," the young man smiles, and turns around to walk back to Annela, a triumphal twinkle in his eye.
"East, that's where the cabin was," she informs, halfheartedly. Again, Evandro seemed to be right.
They sit back in the car, having accumulated a heat worthy of the fires of Hell. Evandro hastily turns on the air conditioner and follows his passenger's directions towards the cabin. The ride seems to last hours to Annela, her anxiety growing, and her nerves strained. Arrived on the road not far from the cabin, her heart disturbingly starts beating harder. As soon as the car stops, she jumps out. She cracks her knuckles, irritated by Evandro's calm, but doesn't muster any complaint, reassured of an ally's presence. The atmosphere is cool, protected by the thick panoply of the trees, stopping the rays of sunshine from heating up the earth underneath. They quietly walk up to the front door and open the door to a ghastly sight. Tim Bailey towers Christian's contused body, covered in blood and bruises. His head suddenly turns around and a terribly joyless smile welcomes the girl.
"Annelaaa!" he loudly greets, opening his arms. "Care to join the party?" he ghoulishly invites. His smile fades as he sees Evandro enter the room. Annela's eyes are glued on Christian's tortured limbs, openly fractured fingers resting on his lap, dangling lifelessly. A broken rib horrifyingly transpierced his shirt. His head hangs from his neck tiredly, but Annela's eyes still detect a weak rise and lowering of his chest. Something eerily pulls her attention away from the body.
Her eyes widen even more as she sees corpses lying inertly around the chair tied to the wooden pole she herself was held hostage around. No torturing tools lie around Christian, and Annela doesn't have trouble guessing the serious injuries weren't caused physically but commanded mentally. The eyes of the man facing the two agents hold nothing more inhumane than Annela has ever seen.
She suddenly gasps, as he compellingly sends her an order.
Stop.
She freezes, his power has augmented. He must have sucked up the power of his colleagues to obtain such force, she deduces. She feels her heartbeat falter under his order, but suddenly, Evandro enters her mind to help her resist the order. Tim Bailey devilishly laughs.
No use in fighting me, he booms in their heads, with so much power, that the two Strongs facing him cover their ears vain, the sound filling the interior of their minds. Evandro and Annela's eyes widen to something behind Tim Bailey and he turns around confusedly, to see what they are so intently looking at. Before he can deviate from the trajectory of the head of Christian, the last one's skull crashes onto the Officer's and his eyes roll to the back of his head as he crumbles to the floor. Released of all the pressure, Annela runs to Christian, dangerously teetering. Evandro and the girl catch him before he falls.
