prologue (chapter 49)
He stood alone at his podium before a firing squad of reporters, each one with their weapons loaded and aimed at him. Yet as the electric silence buzzed in the room amid a smattering of camera snaps and flashes, no one would fire the first volley. So, the man on the podium gandered at his neatly written PR script one last time, and then leaned forward into his microphone.
"Thank you everyone for coming today," he slowly began. "I am John Morris, and although most of you have come to know me as the Founder and CEO of the EverMor company, today we acknowledge that I am also a father. Possibly not even a good one. There isn't much I would like to say to the media about the charges against my son. Given the sensational nature of the subject matter, I know it's easy to get swept up in it and entirely forget the fact that my family lost not one, but two cherished members. So, my family would like to ask for sympathy and privacy, and to let this play out in the court process so that justice can be served swiftly and judiciously.
"The last thing I want to emphasize," said John before pausing to gaze out into the sea of cameras. "I do not believe my son is a murderer. I believe whatever crime he committed will be my weight to bear until my last day, just as the sins of the father are visited upon the son."
