CHAPTER FOUR: RESTLESS NIGHTS

THE day carried on, and eventually sunk into night, and while most people slept through it, Elana drank through it.

Despite the fact that she'd already previously downed a bottle, she found herself unable to hold back as the night drew forward into the hours and they were forced to keep driving.

The music had since gone silent- as neither of the two girls could be bothered to change it- and neither of them planned on changing that small fact.

Meanwhile, Avanna sat in the passenger's seat as her sister took another quick swig of the liquor she'd placed between her legs while she drove, she could only begin to wonder when the girl's liver would fail.

When it would be that her sister finally left the world and she was left all on her own.

And even though they'd been terrible, quite possibly the worst years of her- and Elana's lives- she wished they could go back to the years that followed before her sister had become a legal adult.

Even as a young adult- still in her late teen years- she'd only forced the liquid down her throat after a rough argument with their parents, or after a hunt that hadn't left their parents satisfied.

Avanna watched her now, her eyes resting on the bottle her sister held in her hand, she watched as she adjusted her hand in her lap, the bottle moving with her hand.

"Do you ever think about becoming sober?"

The words left her mouth before she could stop herself and she felt the air around them tighten as her sister switched lanes in hopes of passing the person blocking them from being directly behind Dean and Sam.

"No." she spoke as she glanced in her side mirror, she wasn't one for talking when she had a bottle in front of her, Avanna held back a sigh.

There were times like this that she wished she'd been blessed with a normal childhood, one that was oblivious to the real dangers that waited for them in the world. But as she looked at Elana, she remembered that had never been an option for them. For any of their family, it was a never-ending cycle and they were just a means to an end.

They had to fulfill their part of the cycle, and after they had, they would be useless to the world, forgotten, abandoned, tossed away.

She knew Elana was aware of that cycle, but she didn't believe in it, she believed that she would hunt until she couldn't walk, or until something took her out of the game. And she was fine with that.

They drove for the rest of the day until Sam and Avanna both made claims that they needed to use the bathroom, and while they wouldn't admit it, both the older siblings had to go as well.

With dark approaching and the four adults tiring, Sam began to try and convince his brother that they should just stay at a motel for the night, and Avanna began to try and convince her sister of the same.

In the end, Dean was the first to cave, and it was because he claimed it was better than listening to Sam bitch in his ear all night.

So instead of finding a rest stop to relieve themselves, they continued to drive until they came across a somewhat sketchy motel.

Annoyed and tired, Elana was the one to go up to the office to pay and get the keys to the room, which was good for her, it meant that since she was the only one who could unlock the door she'd be the first one to get to use the bathroom.

The two younger adults trailed behind Elana- eager to finally relieve themselves- unconcerned with Dean who trailed a few paces behind all of them. As suspected, the second the door was unlocked the two adults behind her picked up their pace to try and reach the bathroom first.

They didn't.

As Elana had hoped, she was the first person to make it into the bathroom, and boy was she glad. All the pressure in her stomach slipped away and within a few minutes, she had washed her hands and was on her way out.

Avanna was the next one in, despite Sam having beaten her to the door- he'd been nice enough to let her go before him.

Elana watched as Dean scowled at her from behind Sam, he'd been hoping she would be the last one in, "I think we should visit the river tomorrow." she began, "maybe slip our feet into the rushing water, passing over us faster than we can register."

Dean frowned, the last thing he needed to be hearing was talk about rushing water.

"Can you stop that?" he questioned, watching as she pursed her lips he was relieved to see her go back outside to where the cars were, probably to grab her things and bring them inside.

Once Avanna exited the bathroom Dean shoved past his brother and quickly entered the bathroom, "come on man!" Sam complained from the other side of the door, he had to pee, and he'd been nice enough to let Avanna go before him but this? This was not fair.

"Hopefully he doesn't take too long, maybe there's a bathroom somewhere else." It was Avanna, she was sitting on the edge of the bed closest to him and was very carefully undoing her ponytail, Sam shrugged his shoulders and let a soft sigh fall from his lips once his brother stepped out of the bathroom.

A few minutes passed and when Sam came out of the bathroom he found that Elana was going through her bag, when she found what she was looking for she returned to her car outside where Dean was grabbing his things from his car.

Sam made his way outside to Dean and stood beside him for a few moments watching as Elana grabbed a bottle of pills and a bottle of liquor, he watched as her back curved so her head wouldn't hit the roof of the car and he watched as she slipped away from the car and back into the hotel room.

Dean, giving his brother as odd a look as possible smacked the boy's arm, "when you look at a girl's tits, you're not supposed to make it obvious."

Sams brows furrowed and he cast his brother a glare, "I- Dean you're disgusting."

The older of the two frowned and slightly gestured to the girl, "I'm just calling it as I see it, nothing wrong with it unless you're trying to actually get somewhere with her, which you shouldn't be."

Shoving a bag into his brother's hands, Dean watched as the boy made his way back into the hotel room with his head slightly lowered, no doubt in embarrassment.

Christ, maybe if Sam had just kept his trap shut and not invited the girls to help with their job they wouldn't even be arguing about such stupid things, maybe they would already be in Ohio. No, they would be in Ohio.

But it was thanks to Sam and what seemed to be his little crush that was keeping them from getting there in a timely manner.

Letting a huff pass his lips, Dean made his way back inside just as his brother and Elana had, as he entered he took note of Sam sitting on the edge of the bed closest to the older of the two girls. He was talking to her while the other sister was occupying the bathroom from the looks of it. Elana responded to whatever it was he'd asked and plopped down on the bed that she'd claimed for the two girls, Sam scooted back to give her space and watched as she rolled onto her stomach and buried her head into the sheets.

He stared at her for a moment, his eyes slowly raking down to where her jeans were hugging her ass. It wasn't until she raised her head and turned around to look at him that his mouth went dry and he met her gaze as quickly as possible, "so, what's this case you were talking about?"

Sam opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out, he tried again, "c-case?" he questioned, his mind was empty at the moment and he was sure there was red creeping up his neck and into his face.

"The case you said you wanted us to help with? We can't help you if we don't know what it is we're dealing with." Sam absently nodded his head, "oh the case." he scrambled off the bed and made his way over to their bed where Dean had left the boy's laptop and their father's journal. Within seconds he returned to the bed where Elana was laying and plopped down beside her with his things.

"It's in Ohio, so it's right where you guys would be going through, plus a small detour." he stated pointing it out on the map with his pen, Elana nodded her head, "so what's so interesting about Ohio? Omens? Strange deaths?"

The boy frowned, "yeah... actually, two strange deaths. how'd you know?"

The girl shrugged her shoulders with a small smile, "I like to stay aware of everything that's going on around me, and where I'm going to be." Softly shaking his head, Sam gestured to the map again, "once we're done with our case, I was thinking we could go with you guys and help with your case."

Elana frowned, she didn't want to stay with them any longer than she had to, and while she knew Avanna would be excited at the possibility of getting to stay around the boys for even longer, she wouldn't entertain the idea.

"We were actually gonna head off on our own, y'know, no partners in the business." Sam frowned but didn't argue, he knew this was her way of blowing them off, she was just like his brother.

Stepping out of the bathroom with her hair pooling around her shoulders, Avannas eyes immediately went to her sister, "why can't they help with our case?"

The older of the two rolled her eyes and pushed herself into a sitting position, "because Ava, we have our own stuff to do."

Dean smiled from the boys' bed and nodded his head, "yeah, your sisters right, it's best if we split up after our case."

The boy beside him frowned, "but Dean, we don't have anything else to do after this case, nothings popped up on my radar."

Avanna clasped her hands together, "great, see, if they have nothing else to do then they should have no trouble coming and lending us a hand." offering the best fake smile she could muster, Elana softly nodded her head and cast Dean a look, just by that look she could tell they were thinking the same thing.

This was going to be utter hell.

After a late snack to serve as a shitty dinner and showering, the four adults bedded down for the night, but neither Sam nor Elana could sleep.

Sam watched with half lidded eyes as Elana flipped through a small book she'd removed from her bag, he didn't want her to know he was awake, but at the same time, he couldn't help but watch her. There was something about her that was just too intriguing to look away from.

Turning to the next page of her book, Elana let a small breath slip from her lips, "I know you're awake Sam." fear coursed through his veins as he quickly shut his half open eyes hoping that she didn't notice, she did.

"If you couldn't sleep you could've just sat down with me, I wouldn't have minded."

Sighing, Sam slowly sat up in bed to avoid waking his brother, although that wasn't likely, the man could sleep through hurricanes if he truly wanted to.

As he sat down in the seat across from Elana, he found a question forcing its way from his mouth, "do you really not want us to help with your case?" Elanas eyes narrowed and she set down her book to look at him.

"It's not that I don't want the help, its that I don't need it, I don't need more liabilities running around." she stated.

Sam felt something in him tense. He was not a liability.
