Chapter 78 - Free from the Birdcage

Ink's POV

I sat on the floor of the grey cell and rubbed my stomach, making sure that Gradient was okay. I've been praying every night, hoping that Error will come and save me. I still was slightly unable to process this entire thing. The grandfather of my child kidnapped me. He seemed to be using me as bait for my lover. But... I don't know the reason as to why this mysterious man was doing... all of this.

Since I had all the time in the world, I decided I would observe my surroundings. My cell was located in a wide concrete hallway. It connected to a room to my left. To my right, was a thick metal door. The door probably led to the main part of the building. I looked to the left again. The room was too hidden to be able to make out anything. However, if I moved fully against the iron bars, I could see a bookshelf and a desk.

'Is that... an office?'

Suddenly, the heavy metal door opened. Echo and the grandfather of Gradient walked into the wide, cold hallway. I backed away in slight fear. I was scared that they might try to harm me or my child. I waited for them to open the bars of my cage but they walked right past me. They didn't even look at me with the expected violent expression. It was like they didn't want to hurt me. Just to lock me in this cell.

I watched them walk into the room and then stop.

Echo: Okay so, let's talk about the plan.

???: There is no plan.

Echo: What do you mean by that?

???: I mean exactly what I say.

Echo: I thought you would have something since you're the entire reason why this whole racism thing exists.

They weren't able to finish their conversation before the door opened and a human rushed in. He was panting. Seemed he was running.

Human: Sir, we- we have a security breach. We can't stop him. He's way too strong. We can't even make a scratch on him.

Echo ran towards the human. Error's father didn't make a move. There wasn't a single bit of emotion that could be seen on his face.

'Were you expecting this?'

Before Echo could leave the room with the human, the unknown man spoke to him.

???: Echo.

Echo: Yeah?

???: Kill Error.

That name broke me. I couldn't afford to lose Error. I couldn't afford to lose my lover. Banging myself against the iron bars, I caught the attention of Error's father.

Me: Why are you doing this?!

???: He tried to kill me! So I'm teaching him a lesson!

Me: Because you abused him to no end.

???: I did it for a reason!

Me: For what reason?! Why did you hurt him?

He went silent. His words evading his own mouth. I began to see a side of him that I haven't met. Finally, he spoke quietly.

???: He reminded me of myself. Too much like myself and I couldn't understand it. I couldn't understand why I didn't like it. So... I resorted to what I've always known... violence. I kept doing it because it made his demeanor different. It made matters worse when his mother... my wife, passed away. I perceived that her death was my fault. Which in turn, made me believe that it was his fault as well.

I noticed that his voice began to waver, the unsteadiness increasing slowly.

???: As a coping mechanism for the mournful feeling inside of me, I drank. The alcohol numbed the pain. I also slept with many women to fill the empty space in my soul.

What he said seemed to make him transform into a completely different skeleton. I started to give him sympathy. Twirling my fingers around the iron bars, I looked up at him through the barrier. I whispered to him.

Me: You don't have to do this. You can apologize.

He sighed as he walked towards me, giving me better eye connection.

???: What I've done cannot be forgiven.

Abruptly, the metal door busted open, destroying the hinges along with it. As it fell to the ground, I realized that an object was what caused the door to burst open. Not an object, more like someone. A critically damaged Echo laid on the floor. He pushed himself into a sitting position but quickly started to move backwards. He looked scared.

A person appeared. The light from the other room blacked out his appearances but I could tell that they were pissed. The mysterious person walked forward, allowing me to see them. It was Error. I grabbed my beige scarf out of surprise. He came. He really did.

Echo: You're a demon!

Error: I'm no demon... I'm much, much worse. You decided to take Ink away from me. Now, I won't stop until I have him back.

Error then ripped Echo's body apart with his strings. The yellow-eyed man's bones dusted before my eyes.

Error: And you just happen to be in my way.

Error looked around as he stepped over the pile of dust. His eyes landed on me and his evil facade disappeared.

Error: Ink! Are you okay?

Me: I'm fine. What about you?

Error: They couldn't even hit me. How's Gradient?

Me: As I know of, he's okay.

He stood up and looked over to the man who kidnapped me. His father seemed different after he explained why he was doing this.

Error: ...

???: No "Hello, father"?

Error: You're no longer my father. You're no longer a part of my family. Not after what you've done. You kidnapped Ink. You tried to kill him. And I cannot forgive that.

The man stared at the floor.

???: Congratulations... on the child. I never knew I would become a grandfather.

Error: You don't deserve to even have the knowledge of their existence.

???: Well then... kill me. I want to be with your mother.

Before the man could say another word, Error ripped him apart. He was killing his own family member and did not think twice about it. He was killing his own blood.

Finally he turned around to face me. Wrapping his strings around the iron bars, he yanked it off. A loud bang resounded throughout the hallway. A giant crack forming in the concrete.

Without wasting a single second, we ran to each other. Error held a tight grip around me as he kissed me. The kiss was filled with passion and desperation for one another. The love between us connected, after being separated for so long. Once we let go for air, Error rest his forehead against mine. He was an entirely different person. This side of him was calm and loving, not the merciless destroyer that I just witnessed.

Error: I missed you so much.

Me: I missed you too.

Error: I couldn't sleep, I was scared that you were hurt or... worse. If I lost you, I would destroy everything.

He rested his head in the crook of my neck and began planting small kisses on me.

Me: Are you okay?

Error: Yeah, I'm just really tired.

Me: Then how about we go home and take a nap? I'm tired as well.

Error nodded and took my hand. We started to walk out of the hallway. I analyzed the building as we walked through it. There was not single living soul remaining, only piles of dust and mangled bodies.

(Time Skip)

After taking a taxi all the home, we arrived in the middle of the night. Error and I quietly walked into the house. He led me to his room.

Me: Shouldn't we tell the others that we're back?

Error: They don't need to know right know. I want to have a good night's rest now that I have you back.

Me: Alright.

I cuddled into Error's arms as he pulled the covers over us. His kissed my forehead and rubbed his thumb against the ink stain on my cheek

Error: Goodnight, Inky. I love you.

Me: Goodnight Ruru...

I love you too
