Chapter 77 - Orphan Respect
Crow's POV
The high pitched ringing of a handled bell rang through the small room. One of the nuns yelled at us to wake up. Today was one of the most dreaded days in existence. We had to attend church. Even though this orphanage was already very religious, it's even worse on Sundays.
Once the nun left, I took a cigarette from my nightstand. Using the candle nearby, I lit it and put it between my teeth.
Looking at Quinn, who was in the bed next to me, I sighed.
'What a heavy sleeper.'
I took the pillow from my bed and hit him roughly in the head. In turn, earning a protested grunt from my younger brother. He looked up at me. I puffed out a plume of smoke before I spoke.
Me: Morning and get your ass up. We have church to attend.
Quinn flipped me off as he buried himself in his pillow. I laughed at his immaturity. Walking over to Porcel, I softly pushed him. My baby brother shifted a little bit until he opened his eyes.
Me: Good morning.
A glint of recognition passed through his eyes and then a faint smile appeared. Porcel opened his arms, telling me he wanted to be picked up. I put out my cigarette before doing so. As I picked him up, I realized that he left Asuki behind. I went to grab it but Porcel declined my action.
Porcel: I don't need Asuki right now.
Me: Are you sure, Cel? You never go anywhere without her.
He nodded. I shrugged as I walked over to Quinn with Porcel in my arms. Quinn was getting dressed in a causal outfit, forgetting the normal leather and chains.
(Time Skip)
We walked into the dining hall. The rest of orphans were getting their breakfast.
I stared at my food, refusing to take a bite. Madam Mary said that you have eat every piece or you wouldn't get adopted. Which caused me to laugh to myself. I am beyond the point of getting adopted, I was too old. Porcel was the only one with a chance since he was only six.
Then, the head lady herself walked into the room, Madam Mary. She was dressed in that familiar black dress. A cane was in her hand, the thing she used to beat us with. If you're lucky, you'll get electrical shocks in your neck. Clear sarcasm.
My hand went over the one that I have. Touching it made me think of Fresh and when he found out of my wound. I felt Quinn poke my shoulder.
Me: What?
Quinn: You're blushing. Who's the lucky guy?
Me: Shut up. You want Mary to hear? She'll beat me if she hears that I'm gay, which I'm not.
'I'm not gay.'
Quinn: Sure you're not.
I punched him with hard force. Suddenly a cane hit the table. We looked up to see the scariest woman.
Mary: Crow and Quinn Griffin. I'm hoping you're not going to cause any trouble at church today.
Me: What are you going to do? Tell our parents?
That's when the entire room went silent. Mentioning the slightest thought of having parents was a very touchy subject. Mary's face became red as a tomato. Her eyes grew darker out of anger. She hated being talked back to. Everyone was staring at me. They knew what would happen next. Suddenly, she grabbed me by the collar and began to drag me away.
Quinn: Wait!
She stopped to stare at him.
Quinn: Punish me instead. You've already done enough damage to him.
Mary stared at him for a minute before letting me go. She took his wrist and pulled him along with her. Quinn glanced at me before succumbing to the head lady.
The expression that my brother gave me made me realize of the new found respect between us. Everyone including Porcel intensely watched Quinn be taken away. I felt guilty though, him being punished for my own action.
(Time Skip)
Porcel and I sat against the wall next the torture room. I could hear his muffled screams of pain. Sounded like he was getting whipped. Covering Porcel's head, I prevented him from hearing Quinn.
Suddenly, the door opened. My now injured brother walked out, a pained look on his face. Standing up, I hugged him. This caused him to flinch slightly.
Me: Are you okay? Sounded pretty brutal in there.
Quinn: Everything hurts.
I would heal him but I can't because of the medicine. So, for a solution, I wrapped his arm around my shoulder and took him to our room.
Laying him on his bed, I pulled the blanket over him. Opening the window, I let the cool air in to help the stingy feeling that Quinn felt.
Me: Do you need anything else? You want me to sing you a lullaby or get you a teddy bear?
Quinn: Fuck off.
He said as he lightly slapped me in the arm. I stood but stopped as I realized something.
Me: You're going to miss church.
Quinn: I don't care about that shit. I'd rather be punished by electricity than attend that.
Me: I can relate. Well, get some rest. Sleep is the best way to go right now.
Before Porcel and I left the room, my baby brother grabbed Asuki from his bed and gave it Quinn. Without giving him context, we took our leave.
I thought about the pills that we're given in the afternoon. They stop us from using magic but that's what Quinn needs right now...
Healing magic
