CHAPTER THREE
Three weeks passed by in the blink of an eye, or at least that's how it felt. Every day she had expected Fane to appear every Friday and take her away to God knows where. But he never came. For days, she searched for a new job, and everyone said they weren't hiring, even though the sign on the glass window in the entrance said otherwise. No one wanted her in their business knowing that the town would stop supporting it. Honestly, she was shocked her parents hadn't been fired from their jobs. Thankfully, they didn't receive the same treatment.
Skylar held her little tea party as she always did, but this time, it wasn't as bubbly without Aurora. Of the three of them, she was the one who would come dressed in one of Aurora's fairytale dresses that were all black. Yet, she was the bubbly one, the one with the most ridiculous gossip and stories. To some, things like this would seem like a waste of time, but to others, it was a way to relieve stress and lighten the weight of everyday life.
Belinda entered the garden at the back of Skylar's home with the blue pastel maxi-length dress she had made for her last year for her birthday. She loved the flowers and the almost sheer corset that made her breasts appear larger than they were. As she headed to the table at the center of the garden, she laughed, twirling once when Skylar did.
This time Ezra didn't join them but had said next time he would. Unfortunately, he had to head to work since a couple of the baristas had called off and they needed help. So, today it would be just the two of them.
Skylar served her some of the tea after she took a seat. "Well, what would you like to discuss today?"
"I'm curious to know exactly how Ezra and you started dating. All this time, I thought you saw him as a brother just as I do."
Skylar took a seat across from her. "I can't explain it. Last year, he started to act differently. For example, we were eating once, and I went to take a big bite of my burger, and my hair got in the way. This man reached to move it back and the way he did it sent a flurry of butterflies to my stomach. I was shocked that I didn't move at all, then he laughed." She smiled as she took a sip of her tea. "That man's laughter never made my heart flutter. He started to be interested in the things I love—He helps me sometimes with sowing my dresses. He never did that before."
"So, what made you realize you were in love?"
Skylar thought for a moment. "I don't know... One day he was helping me pick a fabric for the dress someone ordered, and I was way too excited when I found the perfect piece, turned to show him, and ended up bumping into him. I was surprised we didn't stumble to the floor, but we did end up so close—I couldn't resist kissing him."
Belinda took a sip of the tea, loving the sweet taste. "So does your mom know?"
"Not yet. But I'm hoping to tell her soon. You know how she is. She expects me to get married before having any sort of intimacy with a man."
"You two have been intimate?"
"Yes." She laughed. "And let me tell you, that man is amazing in bed." Her smile faltered. "I hope my mom doesn't overreact like she did last time I introduced her to a man."
"She needs to understand that you're an adult, not a child."
"She simply wants what's best for me. Look at what happened with that relationship. In the end, she was right. Victor used me, then tossed me aside after he got tired of me."
"Ezra isn't Victor."
"I know, but my mother saw how heartbroken I was. She just doesn't want to see me like that again."
"You remember Elias?"
"Yes. The man you dated for like three months."
"I lied to you about why we broke up."
"What? Did he do something to you?"
"Not really." She took another sip, not having told anyone what had happened. "I was willing to give it a try—"
"But you told me you weren't ready. Belinda, never think you need to have sex with a man to please them."
"I was an idiot okay. He told me if I didn't give him what he wanted, he would break up with me."
"And you should have punched him in the face."
"I tried, but I couldn't go through with it. When I told him that I had changed my mind, he ignored me." Skylar's surprise changed to anger. "He didn't get to do anything. I kicked him in the balls and ran out of his apartment. Then, the next day he sent a text that he never wanted to see me again."
"That bastard. When I see him—"
"You're not going to do anything. This is exactly why I didn't tell you or Ezra. I know you both well enough to know you'd go and confront him."
"Fine, I won't rearrange his face, no matter how sweet the temptation might be." She reached across the table and held her hand. "I wish I could help you with that contract."
"I wish I hadn't been an idiot and signed it." She let out a nervous chuckle. "I hope that he's patient with me."
"Hey, if he tries anything, I'm pretty sure kicking him in the balls will work just as well as it did on Elias." They both laughed.
"Do you think your mom is home?" Skylar asked.
Belinda grabbed part of the hem of the dress to avoid stepping on it as they strolled down the street to her home. "I think so."
"I hope she is. I love your mom's cooking."
"She's the reason I gained weight."
Skylar glanced at her. "Girl, where?"
She laughed. "Ten pounds isn't much for someone six feet tall, is it?"
"You haven't gained weight because we're always walking everywhere." She paused and removed her heels. "My feet hurt. I should have changed before walking you home."
"Oh, come on. We're almost there." She glanced both ways and sprinted across the street, pausing once she was close to her home. Fane stood in front of her porch, and when he turned, their eyes met. She stopped and thought of pivoting around and sprinting back to Skylar's home. A foolish move. That man would probably catch her before she could get far.
"I'll wait for you inside." Skylar strolled into the home, and Belinda caught the warning glance she gave Fane, which made her smile. She could be five feet one, but that didn't stop her from protecting her friends.
As she ascended the porch steps, his gaze moved over her body. The dress could be loose from the waist down, but the corset was sheer except for the section around her breasts. And apparently, he seemed to like it with the smile he shot at her when their gazes met once again.
"You look lovely."
"Why thank you." She hated the smile that crept to her lips. "I expected you to come sooner. Since you haven't come in weeks, I went to spend time with my friend." She faced him and took three steps back, which meant she was inside the house. Knowing that vampires couldn't enter a home uninvited, she felt a bit safe that he wouldn't grab her and force her to leave.
His expression told her he was amused. "I came to invite you to a date."
"No. I don't feel like going out."
His eyes flashed crimson as he stepped closer, resting his hands on the open doorway. "If you wish to change then do so. You have twenty minutes."
She leaned closer, glaring. "Excuse me? Using such a tone with me will get you nowhere."
His eyes returned to normal. "Please."
"May I help you?"
Fane turned to face her mother and stepped aside as she entered the house, standing in front of Belinda. With a mischievous smile, Fane leaned his shoulder on the doorframe and crossed his feet at the ankles, appearing way too relaxed.
"I thought vampires couldn't walk under the sun unless they wanted to burst into flames."
The bravery of her mother stunned Belinda into utter silence.
Fane touched the necklace that hung from his neck which reminded Belinda of the burning sun. "A gift of sunlight from a powerful witch. Of course, without it, I would burst into flames."
"So, what did you come for?"
Fane hesitated. "I am inviting your daughter out. My mother says it is something normal amongst humans."
"Vow to me that she will be safe."
That seemed to take Fane by surprise. "I vow to keep her safe."
Her mother hugged her tightly. "See you soon, sweetheart."
"I'll be fine Mom," she said as she pulled out of her mother's embrace.
——————
"Dates amongst humans are something normal, but taking a woman into the woods isn't," she said as she followed him through the forest. "That wouldn't be seen as having good intentions."
He paused and glanced at her. "Don't worry. I'm not going to hurt you."
She laughed. "And that's supposed to be ensuring how?"
"Your mother asked me to vow to her that I would keep you safe. Vows are sacred to us, so even if I wanted to drain every delicious droplet of blood from your body, I can't."
"Was that supposed to be a joke? You're horrible at it."
He laughed. "Your blood does taste divine."
"Thanks... I think."
When he came to a stop, she did as well and took in the breathtaking surroundings. This wasn't the river she frequented with her friends. She could see the different colored fishes swimming in the waters. Under the dazzling sunlight, the water sparkled like diamonds.
A smile tugged at her lips when she inhaled the fragrance of the golden flowers adorning parts of the riverbed. The wind blew once more, and some of the tiny pink flowers from the trees fluttered to the ground like snow.
No matter how much she tried, as she faced him, the smile wouldn't leave her face. "Are you trying to win me over?"
He took a step closer. "Is it working?"
She wrapped her arms around herself when the breeze picked up force once more. "Maybe."
He moved even closer, his hand reaching for the necklace that hung from her neck. Yes. It didn't match the outfit. Maybe if she had perhaps worn a black dress, but she loved pastel colors.
She averted her gaze. "If this necklace can protect me, why didn't any of the victims have one?"
His hand released the necklace and moved to the back of her neck. "Look at me."
She did. When he pulled her to him by the neck, lowering his face to hers, she brought her hands up, honestly astounded by the fact he thought things would be that easy. "You really think this would get me to have sex with you?"
"It's no different from what you humans call a one-night stand."
"I'm sure no one wants to end up pregnant on a one-night stand."
"You said you've slept with hundreds of men."
"I wasn't talking about me when I said that. I've never had a one-night stand—heck, I've never had sex." She pushed him away when he moved his hand from the back of her neck. "Maybe you should have considered that before demanding children from someone you didn't know."
"You've never had sex before?"
She arched an eyebrow. "Have you?"
His silence said it all.
"Humans don't have centuries to sleep around."
His eyes narrowed. "I'm only twenty years old."
"Uh-huh. Is that in human years or vampires?"
He seemed amused. "Our elders are thousands of years old. But most new generations of vampires age as humans do until they reach adulthood at twenty-five. So, in vampire's eyes, I haven't reached adulthood yet."
"Is your mother human?"
"Why does that matter?"
"I was simply getting to know you—you know what? Forget it." She whirled around to leave, but he stopped her. "Let go, Fane."
His eyes darkened. "I can't keep wasting time, Belinda."
"The contract states I have three years." She jerked out of his hold. "And don't manhandle me."
He raked a hand through his hair. "I'm well aware of what that damn contract states."
"Why did you sign it?" she asked.
"I was left with no other choice." He inched closer. "Contracts are rare." His fingers brushed along her jaw for a moment before she managed to create distance. "I wasn't the one who wrote it. As queen of the vampires, my mother did."
"Wait—Queen?" Now, her heart beat out of control. It shouldn't have taken this long for her to put the pieces together. This man needed an heir so that when his father died due to being poisoned, he could take the throne and lead the vampire race.
When he attempted to get closer, she brought her hands up and met his gaze. His mark shone a soft golden color in the sunlight, and she was certain hers did as well. For a moment, as he held her gaze, the temptation to lower her hands crossed her mind. The bangle on her wrist became warm and the thought left her head.
His eyes narrowed. "Interesting."
"Did you just try to use your magic on me?" She tried to slap him, but he caught her wrist. "Don't ever try that again."
He dared to pull her closer, and she hated the heat that shot across her face. The grin on his face made her want to shove him into the river behind him. She hated that Skylar was correct. She did find the bastard handsome.
"I promise I won't try it again."
She narrowed her eyes. "A promise means nothing."
He took a step back, an amused smile on his lips. She expected them to fall into the waters with a splash, but instead, the air around them flickered a blue hue and the leaves rose in a whirlwind. A blinding light engulfed them before they stood in a crowded street.
"Where are we?"
"Exerio City."
She feared she would pass out any moment. He had brought her to one of the hidden cities ruled by the supernatural. "Why on earth would you bring me here?"
"Where else would I take you for our date?"
"Belinda!" At a high-pitched voice coming from behind her, she turned around spotting Aurora heading toward her.
Belinda didn't waste time and rushed to her friend, embracing her. 'You're alright." She squeezed her friend harder. "You have no idea how much I've missed you."
"I missed y'all too."
She pulled back, a smile glued to her face. "Have they treated you well?"
"Living with werewolves is far from easy, but I've survived so far—they have extremely short tempers... I'm also starting to believe they have double personalities."
"I told you that's the wolf spirit within us."
Belinda's gaze lifted to meet the eyes of the man who came to take Aurora on her birthday. He stretched his hand out in front of her. "Silas."
She hesitated before shaking his hand. "Belinda."
Silas draped a hand around Aurora. "Let's go to the diner before I starve to death."
"You ate not long ago." Aurora arched an eyebrow. "I'm surprised you're so fit with how much you eat."
"Hey, you have as a big appetite as I do and look how small you are." She hit his shoulder playfully, which he returned by cupping her face in his hands and planting a kiss on her lips. They smiled as they broke away. Now, Aurora's face was bright red.
It enlightened Belinda to see the happiness in her friend's eyes. Within three weeks, this man had obviously won Aurora's heart.
"So, where exactly are we going?" asked Aurora.
Fane took Belinda's hand in his, taking her by surprise, and led her down the crowded streets. Silas and Aurora followed, engrossed in what appeared to be a humorous conversation due to their laughter.
They reached a small diner, and it was obvious everyone inside knew Fane and Silas. As the waiter guided them to their table, everyone greeted them. Belinda couldn't help but notice everyone inside was a man. Now that she thought about it. She hadn't seen another woman other than Aurora and her.
As she glanced around, she couldn't find something odd about the dinner. It seemed no different from the ones she had been to. Those on the elegant tables laughing and conversing seemed no less human than she was.
"Does every vampire wear the same necklace as you?" she asked, leaning closer to Fane.
"No. It is full due to the weather," Fane said, gesturing to the glass window. Gray clouds gathered in the sky, blocking any sunrays from spilling through.
"Usually," Silas began, "they only come out during the night. Plus, not everyone here is a vampire." The waiter took their orders. Silas ordered a large amount of food that could feed five people. Aurora ordered a salad, and Belinda ordered lasagna. She narrowed her eyes when Fane ordered nothing.
"Fane, you alright?" asked Silas.
Fane simply nodded.
"Oh, it's not food you crave—Ouch. Did you just pinch me?"
Aurora smiled innocently. "I would never."
Their food didn't take long and soon, they conversed while Belinda took a mouthful of her lasagna and closed her eyes, relishing the divine taste. "Wow, this tastes amazing." She took another mouthful.
"We can see that." Aurora chortled. "Slow down before you choke on that. So, has Fane explained to you how the bond works?"
When Belinda shook her head, Silas glanced at Fane. "Are you serious?"
Fane shrugged. "What's the point?"
The table fell silent for a moment before Aurora smirked and said, "Well, the way Silas explained it to me was that, at first, there aren't effects at all, but as you start to feel attracted to each other, you'll feel an electric sensation every time he touches you. The deeper you fall in love, the greater the effects become. And then the desire will grow until you won't be able to keep your hands from each other and you'll—"
"Please stop." Belinda laughed when Aurora did.
"Hey, that's far from how I explained it to you," Silas said with a grin.
Aurora arched an eyebrow. "You told me your wolf is growing restless because it craves to mate with me."
"Maybe I should have phrased it better."
"It doesn't matter," Belinda said, gaining their attention. "Fane and I aren't bound by a bond, but a contract. Once I complete everything in it, we'll never see each other again."
"Is that so?" At the soft voice, Belinda raised her gaze to meet large green eyes.
Fane and Silas rose to their feet, greeting the woman with a courteous bow. "Mother, you shouldn't be here." Never in a million years did she think one day she would meet the vampire queen. This woman looked nothing like Fane. Her emerald eyes stood out against her deep brown skin, and her dark hair fell in soft waves down to her waist.
"Oh, don't worry about me. Zeref is using his mind tricks, so no one notices my presence. So, this is her." She stretched her hand out to Belinda. "Nice to make your acquaintance. My name is Charlotte."
Belinda shook her hand. "Nice to meet you."
"Fane, I told you to take her to the cabin. It's safer there than here." She smiled at Belinda. "You were right. She is gorgeous."
Belinda glanced at Fane, and he averted his gaze, running a hand through his snow-white hair.
"Humans are not as informed as they should be. Child, for your words to hold any truth., the mark on your forehead would look more like a scar than a tattoo. Now, you children head to the cabin where it is safer."
"Actually, I have to return home before my parents worry." Without another word, Belinda rose to her feet and started to head out of the diner.
Aurora grabbed her hand before she could walk through the glass doors. "Wait."
Fane stood beside the table, speaking with his mother in a language Belinda didn't understand, the same one from when she connected to him by accident using their bond. A soft smack to her back tore her from her thoughts. "Ouch." She feigned to be hurt as Aurora met her gaze.
Aurora wiggled her eyebrows. "You're drooling."
"Oh, shut it." Belinda folded her arms over her chest. "He's not my type."
Aurora guffawed. "Keep telling yourself that."
"Skylar reacted the same." Her friends knew her as well as the back of their hands. Fane had the height she sought in a man and that smile of his could bring her to her knees.
"Because we know that's a fucking lie." She gestured to Belinda to turn around and she did. She fixed her half updo and the bow she had decided to wear just for Aurora's tea party. She hadn't expected to go anywhere else looking so dolled up. "What's stopping you from giving him a chance?"
"It couldn't have been that easy for you with Silas."
She finished and laughed. "Hell no. The first day he teleported us to his bedroom which gained him a slap across the face. His sister barged into the room, and I couldn't understand anything, but by the look on her face, she was furious. He thought simply being his mate would have me on my knees begging for him to take me, but I've been able to resist his charm."
Silas headed out the dinner and took out a lighter but didn't light it up when Aurora glanced in his direction. "Fine. I'll put it away."
"Thank you." She blew him a kiss, then turned her attention back to Belinda. "Maybe you should forget about that contract you both signed and give each other a chance. It would be such a pity for you to let that man slip right through your grasp. I've heard his ex has been attempting to get back with him." A growl escaped Silas' lips, taking Belinda by surprise. "Yeah, werewolves growl a lot. Trust me, it took me quite a bit to get used to that."
"You have nothing to worry about," Silas said. "Fane never loved Quinn."
"Then why would he date her?" Belinda asked.
"Because royals sometimes don't have a choice in the matter. Alliances shift all the time and his father wanted to strengthen the alliance with the Velkier vampires."
"So, what happened?"
"Look, all that matters is that Fane has set his eyes on someone else."
"Great, then he can leave me alone."
Aurora grabbed her shoulders. "You fool he's talking about you." Silas chuckled. "I can't believe you can be so oblivious sometimes—actually, all of the time."
"He doesn't even know me."
"No one said he's madly in love with you. He's attracted physically and wants to see where things go."
Belinda leaned closer, whispering, "I'm having a difficult time trusting any of them."
"That's because your father got to your head. Give him a chance. You lose nothing."
When Charlotte and Fane headed in their direction, they exited the dinner. Charlotte smiled at Belinda and said, "I spoke to your parents before coming here and there's no problem with you staying with Fane tonight."
Belinda's eyes widened. "What?"
Before she could protest, Charlotte left, accompanied by a tall dark-haired man.
Aurora seized her arm as they began to walk down the streets of the city. "So, did you have fun today at Skylar's tea party?"
"I did. It would have been more fun if you would have been there as well."
"Maybe next time. How are Ezra and Skylar?"
"They're good."
Silas grabbed Aurora's hand, and she seemed to want to protest as he pulled her away from Belinda, but he whispered something in her ear that changed her mind. The air around them flickered and as Fane took Belinda's hand in his they teleported into a dense forest.
"I hate these portals," Aurora said, holding a hand over her stomach, appearing close to vomiting.
Silas stared at Belinda with curiosity. "Usually, humans get a bit sick from walking through a portal."
"I didn't think about that earlier." Fane seemed to think something over before they began their walk once more.
Belinda wrapped her arms around herself, wishing she had grabbed the sweater even if it didn't match the dress she wore.
Fane removed his overcoat and handed it to her. "Thanks." She put it on and rolled her eyes when she noticed Aurora's amused smile. She wasn't about to reject the coat and freeze to death. "So, I heard someone named Quinn is trying to get back with you."
Fane's eyes flickered to Silas, who raised his hands in surrender.
"Why did you two end things?"
"I dated her to please my father. To strengthen his alliance with the Velkier vampires. We dated for a year, but in the end, we were incompatible. Although she wanted to move things forward and wed, I did not. When my mother discovered I was unhappy, she found a way to free me from it."
"What exactly did she do?"
A hint of a smile crossed his lips. "My parents never revealed to me what they did to force the Velkier leader to cave. Quinn had stopped her attempts, but once word spread of your rejection, she returned determined to show me that she is my only option."
"You're the vampire prince. I doubt she is your only option."
"You are correct. She is not, but I am not interested in anyone else other than you."
Her face flamed at his honesty, and she had no idea how to respond.
He stood in front of her, causing her to halt, and leaned way too close. "I would like to get to know you more, but of course, only if you would like to."
She noticed Silas and Aurora not far from them, pretending to admire a flower in the shape of a bright star. "I... I don't know."
"Are you serious?" Aurora laughed and looked away when Belinda glanced in their direction.
Fane raised his hand to her face, his fingers brushing aside her bangs, and a small hint of a smile tugged on his lips. She bated his hand away, playfully. "I'm unsure... I didn't flat out say no." The mark on her face acted like a window into her heart, and she wished she could close it. He knew deep down she wanted to get to know him.
She fought the temptation to return his sweet smile.
Flowers with heart-shaped petals fluttered to the ground from the enormous trees, and Belinda caught one in her hand, smiling when its petals shimmered in the sunlight. Fane raised his hand, and for a moment she thought he would also catch one. Instead, his hand pressed against an invisible wall, which became glass-like. It flickered and vanished, revealing a cabin nestled deep in the forest.
He extended his hand out to her, and with clear hesitation, she took it. Once inside the cabin, it surprised her how minimalistic the inside was. Silas headed straight for the kitchen which consisted of simple white cabinets and a charcoal-colored countertop. Honestly, she had not expected the inside to seem so simple. Most humans she knew that had no worries about wealth had enormous homes that most of the time seemed to have plenty of lost space. Perhaps, the supernaturals had lived long enough to no longer care about materialistic things.
Aurora arched an eyebrow at Silas when he returned with a bag of chips and a drink. "Really?"
"What? Werewolves need to eat a lot."
"I know, but you eat like ten people. It's concerning how much our food budget will be when we live together." That seemed to brighten his face, and Aurora's cheeks flushed. "That's if I decide to stay by your side."
He bridged the distance between them. "Remember the bet we made?"
"I don't remember agreeing to any bet." She laughed when he pulled her even closer, his eyes glowing a soft amber as they lingered on her lips, and that was Belinda's cue to give them some privacy.
She headed into the living room, pausing in front of the fireplace, somehow sensing that Fane stood not far from her. With hesitation, she turned slightly, a shy smile on her lips as their eyes met for a moment before she inched closer to the opened window allowing the soft breeze to spill into the room. He watched her in silence. She stepped closer to the bookshelf, brushing her fingers over the spines of the books, not understanding the words.
"You love to read?"
"Yes. Do you?"
She faced him, clasping her hands in front of her. "Not really. Aurora and Skylar have tried to get me to read their favorite novels, but I'm just not interested in it."
"Then, what do you love to do when you are bored?"
"Well, I do enjoy attending my friend Skylar's tea parties." She gestured to her dress. "That's where I was today. But I wouldn't call that a hobby." She stood before a picture hung on the wall of what appeared to be Fane with his family. The two boys in the picture looked identical in every detail, but taking a closer look, Fane had a birthmark just below his bottom lip. "I do like to go out for jogs every morning." She now studied the picture beside it of Fane with his brother. His brother's stance radiated confidence and arrogance. On the other hand, Fane seemed shy and wouldn't even look at the camera. "You look adorable in that picture."
"That photo was taken when we were fifteen... so much has happened since."
She sneaked a glance at him for a moment, recalling her friends' words. "Fine."
He met her gaze. "Fine, what?" His smile told her he knew exactly what she spoke of.
"You know exactly what I mean."
He moved closer. "Perhaps you should be more straightforward."
She held his gaze. "I'd like to get to know you better."
"What would you like to know?"
For a moment, she had no idea what to ask, never being quite the best with conversations, less with the opposite gender. "How many times will I have to feed you?"
"One feed from a beloved satisfies a vampire for about three weeks."
"Oh, so that's why you came today."
His soothing laughter filled the room. "That would be part of it, yes."
"Honestly, I thought you vampires had to feed more frequently than that."
"Once we ascend after our twentieth birthday, we need frequent feedings, but to keep our strength and not fall ill, we need to feed a minimum once every three weeks."
She fidgeted with the bangle adorning her hand. "Why didn't you come sooner?"
Before he could respond, Aurora entered the living room. "Are we ordering the pizza or what? I'm starving."
"We can go pick it up if you'd like," Silas suggested.
"I will go with you." Fane hesitated for a moment, eyes flashing crimson before following Silas out the front door.
Aurora joined her on the elegant sofa. "I'm happy you decided to give him a chance."
Belinda hit her shoulder playfully. "I knew you were listening."
She chuckled. "I interrupted 'cause I know Fane hasn't fed in weeks, and it's dangerous for him to feed from the vein. I believe their friend Delilah is a skilled witch and created a brew that can help him with his thirst. Of course, it doesn't completely take it away, but it's better than having him tear your neck apart."
"Girl, you're scaring the shit out of me."
Their laughter filled the air.
"Fane might be young for a vampire, but hey, it did help him when he fed from you for the first time, so I'm sure it does work. I just hope Silas reminds him to get some of the brew before heading back."
"Have they ever tried to create something to replace blood?"
"I was told they did once, but those who tried it ended up with their magic depleted, and within days, they fell ill. They need true blood, not some synthetic bullshit."
"So, since when do you know Fane?"
"Two days after I was chosen. He is one of Sila's close friends. When I was told he was visiting, I must admit, I almost had a heart attack." She giggled. "But the more I got to know him, I realized under that hard exterior, he's a softy—Well, with friends. When he's in prince mode he can be quite terrifying."
"Prince mode?"
"Yes, his demeanor changes whenever there are meetings and other prince business. I too act differently with those who aren't my close friends, so I find that normal."
When her head throbbed, she pressed a hand against her temple. "My head hurts."
"I'll go check if we have something here that can help with that."
Belinda rose to her feet and wobbled, regained her footing, and wobbled once more, the floor not helping when it started to sway side to side. Everything went round and round as though she were back in the city carnival events riding one of the rides she loathed. All strength escaped her, and she collapsed to the floor with a thud, her body shaking out of control.
Darkness swallowed her whole and then a dazzling light blinded her for a moment, forcing her to shield her eyes. When she reopened them, lowering her hands to the side, she stood in a dense forest.
A distorted voice invaded her mind, each word ringing in her ears. Reject Fane or face my wrath.
A scream escaped her lips as she spotted Aurora's body torn apart feet from where she stood. She broke into a run, but before she could reach her dying friend, Ezra pulled her back, pushing her behind him as an arrow pierced the air and buried itself in his chest. Another struck his shoulder as he dropped to his knees. Belinda shook her head, running her hands through her hair frantically. Skylar rushed to help Ezra, but before she could reach him, a hooded figure with a mask slit his throat open.
"No! Stop!" Belinda moved forward, halting when an invisible force snaked around her legs rooting her in place.
The hooded figure grabbed Skylar by the hair and plunged the tip of a dagger into her chest. He wrenched it out before tossing her body to the side. Belinda stared at her friends' bodies horrified, the pressure in her chest threatening to crush her aching heart.
The hooded figure stood before her, the silver mask glinting against the moonlight. They crouched and pressed the blade of the dagger against her jaw. Belinda glared, fury coursing through her veins.
If you give Fane a chance, I'll kill everyone you love.
She struggled against the invisible force keeping her chained in place. "Why should I believe a word you say? Nothing guarantees me that you'll keep your word once you get what you want."
They put more pressure on her jaw, the stinging letting her know it had been enough to cut through her flesh. If you give him a chance, you'll only guarantee your demise, as well as his. I couldn't care less about that bastard, but you, I want you alive, not dead.
"Who the hell are you? How the hell can you connect with me like this?"
The mask and hood hid their identity well, but the black pants and top they wore hinted at them being a man. Of course, there was a possibility her assumption could be wrong. Their voice in her head was still distorted in a way that didn't help her at all.
The figure touched her collarbone, and a blinding light consumed her before she woke with a gasp.
Aurora hugged her. "Please don't do that again. You scared the hell out of me." Sweat glistened on her body as Aurora aided her back to her feet. "What the hell happened?"
"I have no idea." Belinda sat down, clasping her hands together on her lap. "I witnessed someone kill Ezra, Skylar, and you." She fidgeted with the bangle. "A man—or so I think—he said that would be your fate if I don't reject Fane."
Aurora crouched before her, seizing her hand. "Whoever this is, he must be the one behind the murderers. They're trying to scare you. I'm safe with the pack. Ezra and Skylar are safe in the town. The barriers protect them."
"The barrier doesn't protect them outside of the town." She pulled her hand out of her friend's grasp and clutched the pendant of the necklace Fane gifted her. "I thought maybe this could work out, but I can't—I can't give him a chance knowing that I'd be putting y'all in harm's way. What sort of friend would I be if I did such a thing?"
Aurora clasped her face in her hands. "Don't give into the bastard's demands."
When the door opened, Aurora pulled away and took a step back. Belinda rose to her feet as Fane and Silas entered the cabin with pizzas, in deep conversation. They froze, staring at her.
"You look like you've seen a ghost," Silas said with a smile that didn't last long. "Is everything alright?"
Aurora bit her nail. "Of course."
Belinda stared at Fane, whose expression said he didn't believe her, but said nothing and set the pizzas on the black countertop. After opening one of the cabinets, he retrieved a couple of glass cups.
"Aurora don't lie to me," Silas said.
Without a word, Aurora grabbed a slice of pizza and headed into the living room. Looking far from pleased, Silas followed her.
"I'm not lying."
"Your heartbeat says otherwise."
"Clearly, that little wolfish ability is malfunctioning."
Belinda moved to intervene, but a strong hand seized her arm. "Tell me the truth."
The instant she met Fane's eyes, they appeared to have a soft glittery glow. They narrowed as he raised his hand which held her arm, staring with curiosity at the bangle her mother had given her. At first, she had believed that her mother had been fooled by the store owner, but now, part of her knew that the bangle protected her from Fane's vampiric abilities.
Noting the warmth of the bangle, she asked, "Did you really try to use your ability on me again?"
"You left me no choice."
"Excuse me? Maybe you could have talked me into trusting you enough to tell you, not force me." She jerked her arm out of his hold. "I don't know about vampire costumes, but humans don't go around using compulsion to force what they want out of people." She folded her arms across her chest. "I want to go home."
Noting that she couldn't hear Aurora or Silas anymore, she attempted to check on her friend, but Fane placed his hand on the wall, his arm blocking her path. He leaned closer, for a moment his eyes lingering on her lips. "Forgive me. I shouldn't have used my ability on you. I vow to you to never do it again."
A cold sensation spread through her body taking her by surprise. "What the hell was that?"
"The magic from the vow made."
She avoided making eye contact.
"Tell me what worries you." When she shot him a pointed look, he added, "Please."
"Someone entered my head and showed me what will happen to those who I love if I don't reject—although, technically speaking, I did reject you." She let out a nervous chuckle. "They also said that if I don't, it will be both our demise." Fane seemed lost in his head for a moment. "Care to fill me in whatever is going in that head of yours?" He grasped her chin and pulled her a bit too close. Her face flamed and she pushed him away playfully. "I'm being serious, Fane."
"Whoever this is can send into your mind any images they desire." His gaze fell upon the pendant resting just below her collarbone. "I can ask Delilah to create something to protect you from such magic if you'd like."
"Isn't doing such a thing difficult?" she asked.
"It might take a month, perhaps. Delilah might be skilled, but even she is drained when blessing objects." He moved her hair back, leaving her neck exposed. For a moment, their eyes met and after she nodded, he lowered his face to her neck and bit down. This time, the pain although still present was far from agonizing like the first time. He seemed to have more control and didn't take an amount that would make the world go in circles. She had heard rumors of the vampire bite being pleasurable, but so far, she hadn't felt such sensations. Perhaps, those rumors were fictional.
At a soft laughter, Fane retracted his fangs and took a step back.
Aurora smiled, tying her hair up in a high, messy bun. "So, are we going to watch the movie or what?"
Belinda's gaze fell on her friend's neck. "Why doesn't she have a necklace?"
Before Fane could answer, Silas spoke, leaning on the entrance to the living room. "Werewolves don't get along with most witches. Although Delilah is a unique gem, casting so much magic continuously all alone could drain her completely of her magic. She needs rest."
Aurora grabbed Belinda's hand and guided her into the living room, where a movie was playing. They sat next to each other as Silas and Fane spoke in the kitchen in a foreign language.
"What do you think they're talking about?" Belinda asked.
Aurora thought for a moment. "I'm going to probably have fifty bodyguards with me from now on."
"Sorry."
"Oh, it's not your fault. Silas was thinking about it already because of everything that was happening. Do you want me to get you a pizza slice?" She got herself three more and Belinda two. Aurora had more in common with Silas than she believed. Both had big appetites and loved food.
When the men entered the living room, Silas sat on the loveseat across from them while Fane took the empty spot on the sofa beside her.
About two hours later, as the movie's credits played, Aurora rose to her feet to get another slice of pizza and when she returned, Silas called her over to him. "Is that your sixth? Damn, you have a huge appetite."
She hit him playfully on the shoulder. "Oh, shut it."
He seized her by the waist and pulled her down to sit on his lap, his lips capturing hers in a tender kiss.
"Werewolves don't mind showing how much they love their mates in public," Fane stated, seeming unbothered as he read a book.
When the hell did he get that? "I can see that. Are vampires the same?"
"No."
Silas ended the kiss and held a hand around Aurora's waist. When Belinda rose to her feet and stretched her arms out, Aurora stood up as well. "It's pretty late." She gave Silas a peck on the lips before seizing Belinda's hand and guiding her toward the stairs that led to the second floor. "Goodnight."
"First room to the left," Fane said, looking way too relaxed on the sofa.
Once inside the bedroom, Belinda said, "What the hell was that?"
Aurora sat down on the bed, gazing at the floor. "What are you talking about?"
"Aurora, you basically dragged me up here."
"Sorry, I got nervous, okay? We've been talking for the past month, and I made a stupid bet with him that I lost, so I'm supposed to sleep in his bed for the next month—I can't do that without caving."
"I've never seen you this nervous about a man."
"Maybe because I never took any of the other men seriously. I was having fun—but Silas, that fool makes me stutter and his kisses drive me crazy."
"If you want to have sex with him then do it. There's nothing wrong with that."
She stood, pacing back and forth. "It'd be easy if I didn't know he expects to bite me when we do."
"Bite you?"
She paused her pacing. "Yes. Apparently when we have sex—or when we mate, as he says—his wolf will rise and mark me as his eternal mate."
"So, you're scared of the bite—I don't blame you. I would be too."
She sat back down on the bed, her hand rubbing against her neck. "Silas is amazing... But I'm not a werewolf, and sometimes, it seems that he and the pack forget."
"Have you discussed this with him?" When she said nothing, Belinda said, "Really, Aurora?"
"What? The pack has been welcoming, and I don't want to be rude by denying going for runs and training with them."
"If you stay silent, you can get hurt."
"I know... Silas had ordered me not to go for runs with the pack, and I went. He also told me not to train with them."
"Then why the hell did you?"
"Because his ex got on my last nerve, and I wanted to prove to her that I was no weakling..." She averted her gaze.
So, the truth spilled out. "I think you should have a long talk with him. And please, don't let what she says get to you. Clearly, she's bitter that he has you now."
"I know. It's just hard to ignore her when she's the best at everything."
"Silas clearly only has eyes for you."
Aurora seemed lost in thought for a moment. "She told me if he loses control, he could crush my pelvis—and you know what, that's fucking terrifying to hear."
Belinda hadn't stopped to consider the power difference between a human and a supernatural. "That is scary to hear."
"Your mouth dropped open just like mine did when she told me." They both laughed.
"Aurora, she probably told you that so you wouldn't sleep with him."
"Maybe... but what if it's true?"
"I think you would have been warned of such a thing by now."
They would have, wouldn't they?
Belinda woke up from her slumber and decided to head downstairs to see what she could find to snack on. When she entered the kitchen, she was greeted by a shirtless Fane. She met his gaze for a moment before her eyes wandered to his sinewy torso and arms. She focused on the floor and attempted to get to the fridge but bumped into him.
"Sorry."
His soothing laughter filled the air. "Relax before that sweet heart of yours bursts."
Her face burned like a thousand suns. "Why are you walking like that?"
"You are acting as though I'm nude."
She grabbed a bar of chocolate and shoved it into her mouth. "Why are you awake? Don't vampires need sleep?"
"We do, but not as much as humans."
"Interesting." She finished the bar of chocolate before pausing. "Wait—who bought this?"
"Aurora mentioned you loved chocolate, so Silas and I stopped to get some for you." A hint of a smile graced his lips. "I didn't think you loved it that much, though."
She struggled to suppress a smile. "I'm sure I'm not the only human in the world obsessed with sugary treats."
He moved too close, and she managed to step around him to create some distance. Recalling Aurora's words, she asked, "Can you hurt me while we have sex?"
His smile broadened, making her regret asking. "I'm more than capable of controlling my strength. You have nothing to fear. I will take good care of you while we have sex and after."
Yes. She shouldn't have asked. "I'm not saying we are—I was simply curious."
"Of course."
"Well, good night." She whirled around and resisted the urge to sprint back up to the bedroom.
——————
When she woke up the next morning, Aurora had gotten her everything she needed so her breath wouldn't kill someone. Belinda showered and waited in a bathrobe for her friend to return with clothes she could wear. Aurora entered the room with a simple beige one-shoulder blouse, shorts, and high-top boots.
Once done getting ready, they headed downstairs to find Silas waiting for them at the front door. "Change of plans. I must take you back to your house."
"Where's Fane?" Belinda asked.
Silas opened the front door. "He had to head out during the night. Prince duties."
Before them, a woman appeared out of thin air. For a moment, her beauty stunned Belinda. She had the beauty of the main protagonists in the Telenovelas she watched with her mother as a child. Her face was picture-perfect, and the dress she wore accentuated her hourglass figure.
"This must be Fane's beloved." The woman glanced at her as though she were the dirt she stepped on. "I expected something more—she's a plain human girl."
"Quinn, what the hell are you doing here?" Silas asked, annoyed.
"Oh, don't be rude," she said, slamming a folder against his chest. "Are we not allies?"
"What is this?"
"My father has spoken to the wizard up north and he has written all his notes there for Fane. They are targeting all chosen ones—My father suspects we have more than one enemy to worry about. The chosen ones from the human towns close to here are left to bleed to death, but after speaking to the wizard, we have discovered that those murdered to the east are drained of blood, but you know what is odd? Their bodies have claw marks, which would imply it is the werewolves."
Silas looked through the documents while Quinn studied Belinda. "So, they're trying to make it appear as though this is a feud between the werewolves and vampires."
"And some towns are starting to rebel." Sadness flashed across her face. "If this continues, the chosen zones will be destroyed. Human cities and towns will be overrun with those lost to darkness."
"I'll give these to Fane and inform him of your father's discovery."
Silas grabbed Belinda's forearm and almost tugged her out of the cabin. By the time she glanced back, Quinn was gone. "So that's Quinn. She's gorgeous."
"She is," Aurora said. "But you're gorgeous as well."
Silas paused beside the spot where she remembered the portal was located.
"How does she know the location of this cabin?" asked Belinda.
Silas hesitated. "She's been here before."
"Fane must trust her enough to bring me to a spot she knows of."
"Belinda, Fane can read thoughts. He would know if Quinn was an enemy."
"He can read thoughts at all times?"
"Yes."
"Someone should have warned me about that."
"What sort of thoughts you've been having?" Aurora said, an amused smile on her lips.
"None of that sort."
"Uh-huh."
They walked through the portal, but instead of appearing in the hidden city, they stood in front of her home. Her mother exited the house and hurried to her side, engulfing her in a warm embrace. "I'm glad you're back. I was scared that I would never see you again."
Skylar came from down the street and rushed to their side, crushing Aurora in a hug. "Glad to see you're okay."
Silas' gaze fell upon Ezra as he joined the reunion. It surprised her to see him lower his gaze, eyes flashing amber.
"Come inside," her mother said. "Did you have breakfast yet?"
Belinda sat at the dining table with Aurora and Skylar, all of them relishing her mother's delicious food. Silas didn't join them but stayed at the front of the house like a guard dog. He had said werewolves had large appetites, so she hadn't expected him to reject her mother's invitation. Perhaps, he couldn't enjoy a meal while on high alert in a human town.
Belinda grasped her cup of juice and took a sip. "Mom, I'm going to see Fane every day from now on."
Her mother stopped eating; her gaze locked on her plate. "Okay. Just be careful. Remember that they can make you do anything they desire."
"Fane would never do such a thing," Aurora said.
"You have no idea what they can be capable of." Her mother stood and began washing her plate. "Rumors say that's how they get the chosen ones to stay. They get in their heads and make them believe they're deeply in love."
Belinda could see her mother's words start to get to Aurora's head. "Mom, they're not the enemy."
"How could you be certain of that? You've only spent a day together." Her mother's gaze lingered on her bangle. "Please, don't ever remove that."
"What does that do?" Aurora asked as she stood. "Pissing them off is far from a good idea."
"Aurora, please relax," Skylar said.
"The bracelet doesn't hurt Fane. It prevents him from using his compulsion on my daughter."
Twice the bracelet had stopped Fane's ability from affecting her. He knew that the bracelet was a blessed item. Yet, he hadn't appeared furious at all.
"I'm going to go for a jog later," Skylar said, clearly trying to change the subject. "Are you going to come with me?"
"Of course," she replied.
"I'll join you as well," Aurora said with a broad smile.
"Great!"
Silas was far from pleased, but he still permitted Aurora to stay for a couple of hours. During their jog, they paused for a moment at the river to catch their breath. Belinda closed her eyes, listening to birds chirping from the canopy above. Whenever she went for a run, it felt as though the breeze and nature itself helped ease the tension in her muscles.
"So, how did your first twenty-four hours with him go?" asked Skylar.
"He tried his compulsion twice."
That shocked Aurora. "What? Why would he do such a thing?"
"Well, he tried it at the river, then later that night when I wouldn't tell him about what happened."
"What happened?" Skylar asked, and Belinda told her about the man who had invaded her head and threatened to murder them if she didn't reject Fane. "So, what are you going to do?"
Belinda sighed. "I don't know."
"Whoever this is isn't as strong as Fane."
"Why do you say that?" asked Belinda.
"If they were, they wouldn't be doing all of this. They would challenge him head-on, but instead, they are trying to turn us all against him. Some chosen were found a week later. What if they too received the same message and when they tried to return home, they were attacked."
"I don't ask much about it to know exactly how the chosen ones are captured," Aurora said. "And I haven't had the same experience."
They both stared at Belinda. "What? There's nothing special about me."
"You're a target because you're Fane's beloved. The vampire prince," Skylar said.
She grasped the pendant of the necklace. Being his soul mate meant she too had a target on her back. "This man doesn't want any harm to come to me. I'm starting to think he's not the one behind the murderers."
"Then who the fuck is he and what the hell he wants with you?" asked Skylar.
"That's something I'd like to know as well."
——————
As weeks turned into months, she had to admit Fane won a place in her heart. Eventually, he came to the house to spend time with her. Of course, still a bit hesitant, she didn't invite him in. The fact her parents weren't comfortable with that also had something to do with her decision to simply sit on the porch and talk to him. Every time he came, she noticed the glances from her neighbors, but did her best to ignore them.
Today, just like any other day, he arrived at her house at eight in the morning. "Good morning."
She exited the house, closing the door behind her. His eyes fell for a moment on the dress she wore today that Skylar had created. The dress hugged her torso and fell loosely to her feet with a slit that reached almost to her hip. Skylar had added the delicate details of a soft lace flower design to the bodice and on some parts of the hem of the dress.
"What do you think?" she asked, twirling once.
His eyes flashed crimson for a moment. "You look lovely."
She bowed her head. "Why thank you."
He moved closer and seized her hand. After flipping her palm over, he placed a ring in it. The kite-shaped gem in the center of the ring matched the color of the one she wore around her neck. However, this one appeared to have sapphire liquid flowing through it. Smaller diamonds wrapped around the gem, along with roses and leaves. "This is a gift from my friend Delilah. She eagerly looks forward to meeting you soon."
Belinda put the ring on her finger and looked into his silvery eyes. "Please thank her for me."
"I will."
"I'd love to hang out, but I thought I told you I have plans with Skylar."
"Yes, you did. I only came to bring you the ring." He leaned in and planted a soft kiss on her cheek.
The simple gesture shouldn't have felt so intimate, but it did. Her cheeks grew warm, and her pulse quickened as he pulled back, meeting her gaze.
"See you tomorrow," she said, her voice not as steady as she wished.
Without another word, she headed toward Skylar's home. As she strolled down the isolated street, she began to wonder when exactly she started to have a crush on Fane. Her heart shouldn't have given her away. He could probably hear how loud it thumped.
She stopped in front of Skylar's home and knocked once on the black door. When she didn't answer she knocked once more, then again and again. Perhaps she forgot about their plans. Belinda turned to leave, halting at the door opening behind her.
"Good morning," Skylar's mother said with a smile. "Come in. Skylar is at the back waiting for you."
Belinda entered the house and headed straight to the back door. "Here." She handed Belinda the teapot before she joined everyone at the table surrounded by beautiful flowers that danced in the wind.
Belinda set the teapot on the table with a smile. "Did you tell your mother already?"
"Not yet. She came to visit today because she said she wanted to make sure I was doing well. I told her she could have saved the four-hour drive and called, but she said she'd wanted to come visit for a while. Everything that's happened has scared her since my birthday is soon."
"I've baked cookies." Skylar's mom set them on the table with a soft smile on her lips. "If you girls need anything else let me know." She returned inside the house.
Belinda took a seat across from Skylar, and when she reached for a cookie, Skylar seized her hand. "What is this?"
"A ring."
She narrowed her eyes. "I know what it is. Who gave it to you?"
"Delilah made it for me. It's supposed to stop any invasion into my mind."
"So, it's from Fane."
"He had the ring made and Delilah blessed it." She took a bite of the cookie and then poured some of the tea into the cup. "I think he's winning my heart over."
"I can't say I'm surprised." Their laughter filled the air. "So, do you plan to let him know?"
"Oh, I think he knows already."
"Do you plan to move to the next level or how long do you plan to keep him in the friendzone?"
Belinda took another sip of the tea, noting the bitter aftertaste. "I..." She lost her train of thought.
"Are you okay?" Skylar asked, concern laced in her voice.
Everything blurred for a moment, and she rose to her feet only to fall back on her chair.
"Mom? Where are you going?"
"Skylar?" Once more she rose to her feet and reached out to seize Skylar's forearm. "What are you doing?"
"My mom just walked into the woods without..." She stumbled, sending them tumbling sideways.
Skylar headed after her mother, and Belinda, not wanting to let her go alone, didn't release her. The birds chirping rang in her ears, but as the sunlight disappeared, replaced by the beautiful blue hue of the moon, an electric surge flowed through her veins.
"Skylar!"
"Mom! Where are you?"
At a noise, they both whirled around, and Belinda held Skylar by the forearm when she almost collapsed to the floor. Before them stood Skylar's mother, a menacing smile on her lips. The image distorted and right before their eyes, her mother's appearance changed to that of a tall woman with copper waves that fell just below her waist. The woman's high-pitched laughter almost shattered her eardrums.
"This is Fane's beloved?" She looked at Belinda with disgust. "I expected something far more exquisite."
Belinda held Skylar's forearm in a tight grip and whirled around but halted at the sight of a dark-haired male not far from them. "Come with us and we'll let your friend live."
"Why has the potion's effect worn off so fast?" the woman asked.
"Who the hell cares." The man stepped closer. "Remove that necklace of yours."
"Or what?"
At a clicking sound, her eyes widened. A blond-haired man stood beside Skylar, the muzzle of a gun pressed against her temple. "That necklace only protects you."
"Don't...Don't... listen... to them." Skylar's voice was barely audible.
She couldn't risk the life of her friend, but nothing assured her that the moment she removed the necklace, they wouldn't kill them both. "Vow to me that you'll let her leave."
All three laughed before the dark-haired man said, "Vows mean nothing to lost ones, human."
"Last chance before I blow her brains out," the blond-haired man said.
"Fine."
Skylar shook her head, which she could barely lift. "No."
Belinda removed the necklace.
"Toss it away," the woman demanded with urgency.
She hesitated before tossing it aside. The moment she did, the dark-haired man broke the distance and grabbed her by the hair, wrenching her away from Skylar. Heart about to leap out of her chest, she thrust her head back and when he released her, she whirled around, swinging her closed fist, connecting. As he stumbled, she hurried to retrieve the necklace, but before her fingers could find it in the icy blades of grass, he grasped a full fist of her hair and yanked her back, surprisingly not giving her whiplash from the force.
"Is the human too much for you?" the woman mocked.
"She's strong for a human—that fucking hurt."
The blond-haired man tossed him the handgun which he pressed now against her temple. Her eyes widened when he took out a dagger, its blade glinting in the moonlight. He plunged it into Skylar's shoulder, forcing a cry of agony from her lips.
"Stop," Belinda begged, struggling against the one holding her against her will despite knowing there was no possible way she could get loose. "Please, stop!"
The woman mocked her pleas. "Are all humans as pathetic as you?"
A loud frustrated scream tore from her lips as Skylar began to doze off. "It's me you want—Kill me!"
"But this is far more fun," the blond-haired man said, running the crimson-coated blade over Skylar's neck. When she saw the opportunity, she buried her teeth deep enough into the arm of the vampire holding her captive to break through flesh. As soon as he released her, she scurried to the familiar soft glow within the blades of grass.
The dark-haired man grabbed her by the legs and pulled her to him. She kicked at him, and once she saw her chance, she sat up and struck him with the pendant. Flames erupted from it and wrapped around the vampire's body, his screams filling the night air. She jumped to her feet and tossed the pendant.
Skylar snapped out of enough to catch it out of the air, but before she could do anything, the man batted it away from her hand. When Belinda moved to aid her friend, the woman slapped her across the face with the handgun the dark-haired man had dropped.
"She killed him!" She smacked her again and again. "She fucking killed him."
"Stick to the plan—" A snarl cut through the man's voice. Belinda lifted her aching head from the blood-stained blades of grass long enough to see an enormous wolf tearing apart the blond-haired man, his agonizing screams echoing through the eerie forest.
The woman dropped the handgun and fell to her knees as Fane stood before her. She lowered her gaze, sobbing. "Forgive me, my prince." Fane locked eyes with hers and fury flashed across his face, eyes whirling into a pool of darkness. "Mercy, my prince."
"You dare ask for mercy?" His voice was nothing like the one she was used to.
Silas aided her to her feet. "Fane, Skylar needs healing and so does your beloved."
Was her face swollen? Her nose did sting, but she couldn't register any other pain. Although, it did ache to move her head even an inch.
The woman still begged for mercy, even when Fane grabbed her by the neck and hauled her to her feet. "No one hurts my beloved and lives." He thrust his hand into the woman's chest and wrenched out her heart. As he tossed the heart aside, he released the woman's neck and her lifeless body crumbled to the ground.
Her gaze shifted to Skylar, who lay on the back of the large wolf that appeared almost the same size as a horse. "Is she okay?"
Fane picked her up bridal-style. "I fed her my blood. She'll heal."
Her vision blurred before darkness seized hold of her and pulled her under.
