Mistletoe
It was finally settled. May was going to kill Dawn. For some reason or another for the past 6 months, Dawn had been completely set on getting her and Drew together. It was so frustrating and annoying! Like she could ever lower her standards to date Drew! He was a total inconsiderate jerk not to mention the weird green hair and the purple jacket. Sometimes though, if she looked at him just right, he wasn't that bad. And when it was late at night and she couldn't sleep, she occasionally thought about him and he would suddenly seem much more appealing. Her subconscious was quite silly sometimes. In any case, he was arrogant and coy and she longed to wipe the smirk right off his face.
Dawn's schemes had ranged from locking them in a closet together, a forced blind date, constantly shoving her into him, leaving them alone together, etc etc. The fall holidays had been full of traps, but Dawn really outdid herself this time. At their Christmas party, in every doorway and archway of their house except the front door there was mistletoe hanging. She, Misty, Dawn, and Leaf rented the house together and they decided to have a Christmas party and invite all their friends but clearly it was a bad idea to let Dawn be in charge of the decorating. She was a fashion designer and had an eye for decorating, but it was clear now that her devious side couldn't be contained.
"You are taking down all the mistletoe," May demanded as she stood next to Dawn in the living room.
"No I'm not," Dawn giggled mischievously.
"Christmas is not about making out! There's way too many!" May exclaimed angrily, her cheeks flushed with red.
"Well I want my Christmas present to be you and Drew getting together and if it takes mistletoe to do that, then I'll do whatever it takes," Dawn said matter of factly.
"Let's make a deal then! You can only have one mistletoe!"
"But what's in it for me?" Dawn pouted. May hesitated. She hadn't thought about it, she just had to get all those mistletoes down.
"Um... you can use whatever dirty tactic you want to try and make it happen?" She said cautiously.
"Hmmm, that's not enough~" Dawn sang.
"What more do you want?" May asked exasperatedly.
"I've got it! Not only can I use whatever trick I want, if you two get under the mistletoe you have to kiss him!" Dawn said.
"Well duh," May said confused.
"I mean as in not a kiss on the cheek or forehead or anything like that. Fully on the lips! Not just a peck either! A full on kiss!" Dawn demanded. May felt her cheeks become warmer and an anxious feeling twisting in her stomach. A full on kiss? She couldn't chest her way out of this one. But it was that or have a bunch of mistletoe everywhere. The odds were less with just one.
"Do we have a deal?" Dawn asked, reaching out her hand.
"I guess..." May said as she gripped Dawn's hand. They shook on it and now there was no going back.
The party started at 6:30 pm and a little before that was when some friends began to show up. It was a come and go social, no gifts required unless somebody had a present they wanted to give to someone. In the living room, a marathon of Christmas movies played on the tv. The entryway into the kitchen from the living room had the one mistletoe looming overhead. In the kitchen and dining room was where the snacks were all set up.
"Hey May!" Dawn called to her as she was welcoming Solidad and Harley in. She looked away from her coworkers as Dawn motioned for her to follow her.
"I'm sorry, please excuse me, I'll be right back," she apologized as she followed after Dawn.
"What is it?" May asked, once they had gotten away from the main group.
"I have one more condition!" Dawn said.
"But we already shook on it!" May argued.
"If you don't agree, I'll put up another mistletoe!" Dawn threatened.
"What is it then?" May sighed. She smirked before leaning in to whisper in her ear.
"If he kisses you back, you have to kiss him again," May jumped back from her.
"No way!" She said, horrified.
"Well that's too bad, perhaps the entrance to the dining room could use a mistletoe too," Dawn trailed off.
"Okay fine! But no more changes!" May said firmly.
"Alright," Dawn agreed. May sighed as she walked away. Dawn was a great friend but when it came to shipping, she was a bit overboard. Once she had her heart set on something, she was very determined to make it happen. She made her way back to Solidad and Harley and she continued their idle chit chat that had been interrupted. She apologized for earlier again. She did manage to have some luck as Drew didn't show up until the party was already halfway over. He came a bit past 8:30, looking actually pretty tired.
He was dressed casually, jeans and a long sleeved black turtleneck. He had ditched the purple jacket for the party, or maybe he was too tired to put it on?
"You look horrible," May said dryly as he walked in.
"I had to cover a morning shift today so I've been working since 5:30 this morning. I got off around 3 ish and fell asleep when I got home. I woke up about 40 minutes ago," he explained.
"That sucks," she said. He just shrugged.
"Why did you come if you were tired then?" May asked, hoping for a chance to pay him back for all the teasing he did to her.
"I don't know. I guess maybe getting a few jabs in on you would make me feel better?" He smirked as he tilted his head in a sort of mocking way.
"You're such a jerk! I'm not entertainment for you!" She huffed.
"Really? You sure are entertaining to me," he chuckled as he reached out and pulled down on her cheek.
"Ow!" She said as she smacked away his offending hand.
"Are you mad at me?" He asked mockingly.
"Of course I'm mad at you!" She exclaimed. "Don't grab my face like that! It hurt!" He smirked as he reached up again and pinched and pulled on both of her cheeks. She tried to chase his hands away by gripping his forearms and pulling but he was too strong.
"Wret gwoo!!" She demanded, her speech altered by him stretching her cheeks. He just grinned devilishly down at her. Glowering at him she formed her counter attack. She let one of one of his arms to reach up and grabbed his ear. Aggressively, she yanked down on it.
"Ow!" He said in surprise. Reflexively he let go of her, one hand pushing her away and the other coming up to nurse his accosted ear. She stuck out her tongue at him childishly before turning to leave him on his own. She stomped away towards the dining room, planning on stuffing her face in anger. Drew had to follow her, just to throw a wrench in her plan.
"Go away!" She snapped.
"Geez, take it easy! You are so not cute," he said. She didn't know why, but what he said really seemed to bother her.
"Who cares! If you're just here to be a jerk to me then leave!" May exclaimed. She wasn't sure why it always turned out this way between them. A normal conversation turned into a fight. Maybe it was because she didn't know how to treat him. The relationship between them had always been very complicated.
"May! Ugh, don't be like this!" Drew said in annoyance. She ignored him and continued walking through the dining room, squeezing by a few people.
"Stop following me!" She spat. She continued walking into the kitchen. He eventually caught up though and grabbed her wrist. He yanked her back towards him.
"Stop grabbing me! Don't touch me, jerk!" May exclaimed as she tugged her hand back. Drew looked slightly hurt by that statement and now she could tell she really made him mad.
"I was just messing with you, why do you have to be so uptight, it's seriously so annoying," he frowned at her. She turned around and walked away faster, she was almost out of his reach as she reached the archway between the kitchen and living room. She passed through not paying attention in her anger and all the sudden she went down. Before she knew it, Drew was already worriedly offering her a hand, his anger somewhat melted off. She accepted it and after standing back up, she brushed herself off. She heard laughter to the side of her. When she looked over, she saw Dawn. So Dawn had tripped her then, but the laughing meant...
"May~, Drew~, what's that above you?" She grinned widely.
"Oh no..." May said. She looked up and sure enough her fear was hanging above her.
"Hn?" She saw the color drain from Drew's face for a second, only to burn bright red.
"You know what this means~?" Dawn asked cheerfully. May felt her own cheeks begin to heat as well. She sighed. She might as well get it over with.
"I know you're mad at me, you don't have to-" she cut him off when she stood up on her tiptoes and grabbed his face with her hands.
"Eh? Hey, what are you-" she interrupted him again, this time by pressing her lips onto his. She shut her eyes tightly, not wanting to see his expression. Her heart was pounding with anxiety, but the kiss only lasted for about a second or two before she pulled away. When she opened her eyes, he was staring at her in disbelief. She couldn't look anymore so she just turned to glare at a squealing Dawn. She could tell that her face was red from embarrassment and her heart rate just wouldn't slow down.
Suddenly, she felt his hand grab her arm and another turn her face towards him. She wasn't sure what the expression Drew was making meant and why it was giving her butterflies in her stomach, but she didn't have time to think about it before he bent down and captured her in a kiss. His hand gently cupped her cheek and he pulled her closer, his arm slipping around her back to decrease the distance between them.
This kiss was completely different than the one before. The first one was to get it over with, but this time it was Drew leading and it was much more cautious. It was soft, as if he was testing the waters, if it was okay. Even though her mind was telling her no, her heart felt differently. It seemed that Dawn was right, she did have some suppressed feelings for him after all.
It was taking her too long to think that she panicked as she felt Drew about to pull away. She really didn't want that anymore. Even with Dawn's stupid dare. Making up her mind she pressed her body against his and clenched her fists in the fabric of his shirt. She chased him as he began to pull back. When she increased the pressure, he reciprocated.
From there, the kiss changed. Without hesitating, he began to move his lips against hers to which she responded likewise. Her heart sang with happiness at his action. The kiss gradually grew more rough. Things between her and Drew had never been easy. Their relationship was complicated. They were often harsh towards each other, which was reflective of the direction of the kiss turning aggressive. However, they did sometimes have their rare sweet moments in between.
Drew began to lighten his pressure before gently tugging on her bottom lip. Her stomach dropped in reaction. It was a good feeling but she began to panic. They were probably going too far, but there were people there too. She had completely forgotten about the party. She gasped and pulled herself away from him, her face flushed. She was short on breath as she avoided his eyes. She looked around the room to see everybody staring at them. Her face severely reddened. Mortified, she ran up the stairs towards her room. Before she could open the door, she was pulled back yet again by Drew. This time he wrapped his arms around her from the back so she couldn't escape.
"Let me go!" She said as she struggled, tears starting to escape from her eyes.
"Not before we talk first," he said firmly. She knew there was no running away from this. Besides, she did owe him an explanation.
"I won't run so let me go now," she said quietly. He hesitantly loosened his hold on her. She held true to her words. Instead she turned around to face him.
"Why did you... you didn't have to, you know?" He asked.
"It's a long story. Dawn was up to her schemes again. She had put mistletoe in every doorway or archway in this house. I told her to take them down but she refused. We cut a deal. She said she'd take them down except one, but if we got under the mistletoe, I had to kiss you on the lips. She could also use whatever dirty tactic she wanted and she tripped me. There was also one more rule. If you kissed me back, I had to kiss you again..." she explained. She watched his face fall.
"So it was all just a game?" He said quietly.
"I guess..." She answered. He laughed bitterly before running a hand through his hair.
"I'm sorry for misinterpreting," he said as he began to turn and leave. She panicked as he began to retreat from her. She didn't want that. It may have been a game for Dawn but it wasn't a game for her.
"Drew wait!" May called out to him.
"No, I get it, you don't have to apologize, it's not your fault," he said sharply. Before he could get the chance to leave, she ran up behind him and captured him in a hug just like he had done to her.
"It wasn't a game to me!" She exclaimed. He stiffened as he turned around to look at her.
"I don't get it! How can I hate your guts one minute but with the next word you say puts out my anger! Why is it that you stir up all my emotions just to make everything okay again! You make me feel so many different ways that I can't even describe. I hate you! You're my friend! I don't even know anymore. I had to pull away earlier because I was scared of what would follow. I don't want to fall for you but why-" he cut her off with a real kiss. Not the product of somebody else's games and rules. It was sweet and light and she couldn't help but sink into him. She didn't want to fall for him, but she already had. It only lasted for a second or two before he broke away. She stupidly ached for that contact again. When did she get so lovesick over him?
"May, I'm in love with you," he confessed. Her eyes widened as she trembled.
"W-What?"
"I said I'm in love with you. If you're willing, I'd like to give a relationship between us a try," he said. She held her hands to face to cover her blush.
"Okay, let's give it a shot. I'm not sure exactly what my feelings for you are just yet, but I know they're stronger than friendship," she said quietly.
"Well, should we go back downstairs?" He asked.
"No. I don't want to face that just yet. Do you mind if the two of us just stay up here together for a while?" She asked shyly.
"I'd like nothing more,"

-A/N-
Hey guys! It sure has been awhile! I haven't had a one shot idea in a long time so I'm really sorry! On the plus side, I have a New Years one I'm working on too plus another one that I just had the idea for! It may be a bit though because I'm slow! This was a lot longer than I thought it was going to be. Sorry it's so late for Christmas! I'll try to get the New Years one done ASAP.
Also for those wondering about the story I talked about, it is called Rose Garden and it is a college coffee shop au. I know you guys wanted in universe, but a couple people on my main story Platonic wanted an AU. I then came up with a coffee shop and I knew that this was exactly the vibe for the story I wanted. I'm sorry, but I hope you guys like it! You can read a preview of the chapter in one of the chapters of platonic, I can't remember but it's one of the newer ones XD.
Anyways, I don't plan on finishing this one shot book any time soon, it's for when I have ideas. Platonic just had been taking up most of my time with weekly updates that I haven't had one shot ideas for contestshipping. I've had ideas for other stuff that I'm working on on the back burner but Platonic comes first guys, I'm sorry. If you want to suggest me your ideas for one shots, I'd be happy to hear them, but it may take me a bit to get it out so I hope you understand! Until next time!
