What She Lost...
The kids were leaving the room. Cara looked like she could've killed anyone if permitted. Two Shot taught her how to use a shot gun and I can say from experience that she has a good aim. Blaze, Carson, and Taylor all were trying to say something to her but we all knew it was useless. Once Cara has her mind made it is quite hard to change it. She takes after her father.
And speaking of her father, I knew he must've said something really stupid to get her worked up like that.
Deliberately forgetting to knock, I go into in Easton's office, having my argument ready on my tongue, but he beat me to it. It's no wonder this marriage works, despite us not agreeing to it in the first place.
"She gets herself overworked," he said.
I shut the door behind me and walk over to his desk. I sit on the chair across from him, crossing my leg which suited the dress real well. We bought it last time we were in Turks and Caicos. Really beautiful island, if I do say so myself. It was for a special occasion. It looks green but it's really black and is sequin. Beautiful, but not my favorite dress. I only wore it today cause we have the dinner later at the Castros.
"She has a right to be upset, Easton. It was her husband."
He scoffed, grabbing his glass and swigging down his scotch. Abruptly he stood up and came around the desk to stand over me. Very early on, in fact from the first time we met each other, he always tried to show me the 'power' he commands but wrong little girl. I stood up to be eye level making sure I did not deter my focus.
"Easton, she just lost her husband. To send her back into action, a mere 3 months after the love of her life passed away, is cruel. At least some remorse, he was your son-in-law too."
"It is 15 million dollars, Evelyn, if you think I am foolish enough to let something that valuable go please, I beg you to reconsider. Plus I already made the dea-"
"What?"
He immediately had that look, the look where you are verge of telling someone something but caught yourself, and he tried to ignore it, but he is already way too deep in that rabbit hole.
"Easton, what are you talking about? What deal have you made now?"
"Nothing," he walked around the desk and poured himself more scotch. Another deal? He knows not to make deals with the other guys. It was actually a deal he made that resulted in Cara's loss.
"Easton, God help me, I will get everyone involved to find out this deal you made, and you know Gaspipe will be right behind me."
I just had to say the magic work: Gaspipe. The only person who scares Easton like a monster under his bed. Easton has a smart brain and a wise mouth but that can get him in trouble; Gaspipe taught him a real expensive lesson on what Easton would pay for if he used this against him. And lucky for me, I've known Gaspipe for a while. We did a deal in Morocco that started out our great friendship.
He sighed and looked out of the window. The office overlooked the pool and backyard which may not be the best to look at while trying to finish some paperwork. It was a beautiful estate. Easton bought it after he had his first "paycheck". Basically some of the big guys infiltrated the gas imports or something else like that and got millions of dollars off of it. Easton, being close to Two Shot, was able to get his hands on some of the cash. This house is around 4 million, and that wasn't even 1 percent of the total money.
"Sullivan made a bet with me not too long ago," he started off. As soon as he said Sullivan I knew one thing immediately: He was drunk when he made this bet. "Two Shot has an influx of money coming in, about 45 million, so Sullivan said to me 'Hey Easton, why don't we make a bet? The Venetian, Vegas. They have a import diamond coming in next week, cost around 18 million. Why don't we do this: First person in possession of the diamond will get the 15 million Two Shot is giving.' The kids already did the Venetian, it is a simple in and out."
Men can be a lot of things, but insensitive is what I am gravitating towards right now.
"Yes, Easton, they already did the Venetian, but that is also the place where Cara lost her husband!" I put heavy emphasis on the last few words to get it through his thick head; I don't think he realized this. "If you think that she could go in there without completely breaking down, then, my goodness, you are dumber than the dog. May I remind you that the man shot Kayden while holding a knife to Cara's throat! It's simply a miracle he didn't slit her throat and be done with the whole lot."
"Evelyn, she will be totally fine, she will-'
"No, Easton! What don't you get? She will not be fine. She is going to-"
"Like mother, like daughter! Both are emotional driven beings who cannot simply put their heart away!" he shouted over me.
"Excuse me?"
But I didn't say that.
We both swivel our heads to the door and see Cara standing at the door. He knew he messed up when she started to cry. Cara never cries. The last time I saw her do it was when she was a young teenager, but it has been a long time since she cried.
She immediately slams the door and leaves the room. I hear the rush of her heels hitting the floor. I give Easton one last, deadly look before I go after her.
Men, why do we need them?
