Gracie placed her purse in between her knees and wrapped her silky scarf tighter around her shoulders. The windows of her car couldn't seem to keep out the frigid January wind, but she would have to deal with it. Today was the first day of her new job as a babysitter for a family of five, and she intended to make a good impression.
What she didn't know, however, was that the Tealwoods needed a good babysitter for a reason. No one on their property was the slightest bit manageable. Their oldest child, Caroline, had electric pink hair and could be incredibly fussy if she felt like it. Toby was incredibly shy, often not leaving his room for days- he was also obsessed with trains. The baby, Marlee, was only six months old, and when she started to cry, she didn't stop.
As Gracie pulled into their wide driveway, she found Mr. and Mrs. Tealwood standing on their doorstep, waiting for her.
"Hello, you must be Gracie Hart," Mrs Tealwood smiled warmly.
"Yes, it's nice to meet you," Gracie shook her hand.
"Now, we're going to be gone for about three hours, and there are just a few simple things we need you to do," Mrs. Tealwood began. "Caroline needs to spend at least thirty minutes without her headphones in, Toby needs to drink his milk, and Marlee needs to go to sleep."
Gracie nodded, it sounded simple enough. She waved goodbye to the Tealwoods as they entered their car and drove away.
Fishing the small, rough form of the spare key that had been mailed to her a couple of days ago out of her purse, she proceeded to unlock the door and enter the house.
"Hey look, it's the new babysitter!" Toby yelled, running down the stairs and pointing frantically at Gracie.
"Eh," Caroline muttered from her seat on the couch. "Least she looks like she's better than ugly old Mrs. Johnson."
"Forgive my sister," Toby grinned. "Can't say she's as friendly and outgoing as I am. She never leaves the couch!"
"I heard that!" A yell echoed from the living room.
Gracie remembered her instructions. It would be best to tackle them one at a time. Since Toby seemed like the more cooperative of the two, she decided she would start with him.
"Okay, here's the deal," she explained. "You drink your milk like a good boy, and I'll leave you alone until your parents get back."
When he nodded, she entered the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. Pulling out a large carton of milk and a cup, she poured what looked like a reasonable amount. She'd forgotten to ask Mrs. Tealwood how much milk Toby was to drink.
"Do you like your milk warm or cold?" She asked.
"Cold," Toby replied in a singsong voice as he pranced around the living room, chasing a massive toy train.
"Coming right up!" Gracie smiled, setting the milk on a coffee table. She was about to call Toby over when she heard a piercing wail from the bedroom.
"I think Marlee's hungry," Toby stated, sitting down on the couch by Caroline.
"Oh," Gracie sighed. "Okay, drink this and I'll be back soon," she gestured to the milk and rushed to the next room, following the cries.
She found the baby lying in a crib, yelling and kicking. To her relief, Mrs. Tealwood had left a bottle of milk by her side. She gently lifted Marlee out and set her on the bed, trying her best to soothe her. Slowly, the baby's cries softened as she sucked up the milk. Gracie held the bottle still as she fell asleep, still drinking.
Wonderful, that was one task accomplished without even trying! When she returned to the living room, she found Toby stacking books by the sink, the glass of milk on the counter.
"What are you doing?" She raised an eyebrow.
"Oh!" He gasped, falling off the top of his stack and quickly jumping up from the ground.
"Trying to pour it down the sink are you?" She laughed. "That isn't going to work! Now drink it."
"You can tell Mom and Dad I drank it," he whispered. "I won't tell."
"Oh, Toby, you're smart," Gracie smiled. "But you need to drink that," she pointed sternly to the milk.
"Fine," he grumbled, downing it in a single gulp. Two down, one to go.
"Hey Caroline," Gracie called, approaching the couch. "Take those headphones off, your parents said you need to have them off for at least 30 minutes." No response.
"Caroline Tealwood!" She yelled louder. Still no response.
Please, she willed with all her might. Reluctantly, Caroline reached up and pulled the headphones off her head.
"What?"
"You need to have those off for at least thirty minutes."
"Can I still watch TV?"
"I guess so," Gracie shrugged. "They never said you couldn't."
She nodded and reached for the remote. Gracie pulled out her phone, glancing at Caroline and the clock at irregular intervals. After exactly thirty minutes, there was a knock on the door. Gracie answered it to find Mr. and Mrs. Tealwood standing outside.
"So, how was it?" Mr. Tealwood asked.
"Wonderful," Gracie smiled. "Your kids are very well behaved."
"Really?" Mrs. Tealwood asked incredulously. "Did you do everything I asked you to?"
"Yes," Gracie said. "Caroline has had her headphones off for thirty minutes, Toby drank his milk with almost no trouble, and Marlee's asleep right now!"
Mrs. Tealwood's eyes widened and she ran through the house, checking on Toby and Caroline. She even went to the bedroom and found Marlee cooing softly in her slumber. That was when the strangest thing occurred.
"It's her!" Mrs. Tealwood whispered ominously, looking very excited.
"Is it really?" Mr. Tealwood asked, his lips curling into a delighted smile.
"Me?" Gracie asked, confused.
"When each one was born, our children were cursed by one of the Trio," Mrs. Tealwood started. "Caroline by the spirit Stubborn, Toby by Disgust, and Marlee by Temper. The curses caused the kids to take on the character of the evil spirits."
"What?" Gracie asked, giving them a confused look.
"Ever since the Trio took over the supernatural world, they've been cursing kids left and right. Their ability to assume human form and blend in while in our world makes them even stronger. After our kids were cursed, we asked many supposed psychics what to do. They all said there was no hope, that lifting the curses would require a good spirit, and there were none of those left."
"But why aren't there any left?"
"The Trio tried to kill them all," Mr. Tealwood sighed.
"My mother was killed by a strange looking woman about seven years ago," Gracie stuttered. "Was she...a good spirit?"
"Describe the woman," Mrs. Tealwood's eyes narrowed.
"Well, my mom was outside in the garden...watering it...and suddenly the doors all just locked on their own and I couldn't go outside. I was watching through the window when this woman just...appeared behind her. She was wearing a small purple mask over her eyes and a short black dress. She had really pretty blonde hair and was fairly tall too.
All she did was touch my mom's back and she fell over into a bush. Dead, just like that. The moment after she killed her, she took out a phone and called someone. I could barely hear her through the glass, but she said something like 'Hey Temper...got Integrity'. I tried to explain it to the police afterwards but they didn't believe me. Thought I was just a scared little girl making things up. They never proved who killed her," tears began to well up in Gracie's eyes.
"A purple mask and blonde hair you say...that's the spirit Disgust," Mrs. Tealwood nodded. "And from what you're telling me, your mother was the spirit Integrity. That makes sense, the power of spirit usually runs in families."
"Do you mean to say...I'm a spirit?" Gracie asked, both fearful and excited.
"Indeed," Mrs. Tealwood nodded. "The spirit Peace to be precise. We've been switching babysitters every week ever since the kids were cursed, but none of them could handle the cursed children. We never gave up hope, thinking that somehow, one of them would be a spirit. And now, finally, you're here, and you lifted the curses!" She smiled wide, pulling Gracie into an awkward hug.
"I lifted the curses?" Gracie asked. "But I didn't even do anything!"
"You used your powers without even realizing it! But now, you must go. Vacate your apartment and buy an RV. Never stop moving."
"What, why?" Gracie whimpered, her eyes widening with fear.
"Now that you've used your powers, they know you're here," Mr. Tealwood said with urgency. "From this moment on, you will never be safe."
