Writing Contest: Tsunami

There were no warnings.
Apart from the earthquake.

Everything started completely normal, a typical school day, equally uninteresting lessons. Same teacher, weather bland, lunches not the greatest when suddenly my pencil rolled to the other side of the desk and dropped. We all froze, waiting for another tremor.

We were proven right. Everything shook faster, as if an angry force inside the earth was shaking with all its fury. The teacher told us to put our heads against the wall. Soon after we were hushed and guided outside of the building. I never had finished my essay.

After a silence of anticipation, an eternity of fear, everything stopped. As abruptly as it had started.

Each person let out a sigh of relief. We had evacuated to the car park. The sky had turned dark with the arrival of ominous, grey clouds. I sucked in a breath. Something felt very, very wrong.

Someone yelled.
"Oh my God!" they cried. They were pointing to what seemed like a pulsing wall of navy topped with ivory froth.

What the Hell is that?

People started to scream, shout, push each other out of the way. I was hardly aware of them. Nothing was real. Deep inside, I knew it was pointless to react, for it looked like it was going faster than any car, let alone human, could run. In the distance car were being tossed around and bits of debris were floating.

I felt a hand on my shoulder.

"Come on, we have to go!" they yelled.

"Where?"

"Where?! Away from that... thing!"

"We wouldn't make it."

They stopped talking to me after that. My eyes were glued to the ever-approaching tsunami. Before I knew it it was only a few metres away.

I managed to form a few words:

          Water     catastrophe.

I smile as I am swept away.
