Wait For Me
"Wait for me..yeah?"
"Yeah. I will." She whimpered with the cold hand of her husbands pressed against her cheek.
The young man smiled and leaned his head so it was against his wife. "Good..gotta come home to something other than a blubbering mother."
This earned a small laugh from the girl,"Oh stop it..your moms not that bad."
He moved his hand away from his wife's face and dropped it while leaning away so she could see the surprised, incredulous expression on his face.
Like always, she giggled at him and just shook her head,"Whatever." She put her weight on her tiptoes and cupped her husbands jawline to hold his head still while she kissed him. Not like he would've moved away though.
The young man smiled into the kiss, and the wife felt it, so she did the same. It was when her husband tasted the salty substance between their mouths that he pulled away, both his arms hooked around her waist.
He looked into her eyes, her beautifully breathtaking eyes that were shimmering.
They were always so vibrant, so full of life and joy. Now they were dimmed, lacking their natural color and aura, as well as filled to the brim with melancholy..and tears.
"Babe.." He breathed a short, but sad chuckle. Her hair glided across her forehead when he touched it and tucked a few strands behind her ear. "Please don't cry..you'll get your makeup all smeared."
She laughed humorlessly and shook off her emotions like they were almost nothing, something she did occasionally for her husband's sake. She had to be stronger more than ever. She was his rock, and this rock had to wait, and have faith. But..faith? Faith in what? He was going to come back. He had to.
The two lovers were lost in each other's eyes, mentally having a somber conversation with no words whatsoever or movements, only their arms sometimes shifting, the husband's hands rubbing around her waist, and the wife's locked around her love's neck. The pier on which they stood seemed to rock above the ocean not far below, which made their bodies feel like they were as well.
With a slight tilt of his head, while the sun began to set on the dimming horizon, the young man set his head onto hie beautiful wife's, and she in turn ducked her head.
The foghorn sounded loud through the open ocean. The seagulls cooed and cawed in their aviary way above them.
"I'll wait for you.." She breathed, her eyes closed.
The man smiled and admired her with his open pupils. He was asking a lot from her. God, he loved her so much.
The foghorn sounded again for the second time, and the couples around them that were in the exact situation started to part. You could feel the entire atmosphere turn melancholy and the air pressure drop as husbands and wives left their loved ones to depart on the submarine that would soon dive deep into the unknown depths of the ocean to serve.
He was doing a good thing, serving his country, doing his duty. It would be terrible if she had blamed him for that. She was proud of him, in fact.
"I love you.." He whispered back and ushered her close for a short, but sweet and lingering kiss that made her lips tingle even after he had let go of her and started to back away from her.
Tears started falling again at the image of her man standing alone before her, the last time she would ever see him, perhaps in a long time. The sun was at his back, so his features were darkened and blotted out by the light. But her eyes were squinted and tear stained enough that she could just see him grin and wave, his feet carrying farther and farther away backwards to the ship.
"I love you too." Her wavering voice was just loud enough for him to hear before it and her husband were drowned out by the foghorn of the vessel. His figure seemed ghostly almost as he disappeared into the crowd of men and women leaving to serve.

She didn't cry when she received the letter.
She wanted to. Oh, yes she wanted to. But her body physically would not let her. She seemed almost...at peace, but troubled all at the same time.
The afternoon after she got the notice, she traveled to the shipyard she had last seen him almost a year ago. She walked to the very edge of the pier where they stood, and simply gazed out into sea. The sun was not setting as it was before, but the horizon was still amazingly beautiful.
She had waited, she told herself. Now she did not have to wait any longer. Now no tears were shed, only a smile was felt on her lips. One that brought upon memories of him, and how he would be scolding her if she did started to cry, weep and wail about it. How he would be so proud of her that she had waited, and not let a single tear fall down her rosy cheek.
