A new heart. A pretty tall order, wouldn't you say?

That's exactly what Ellie was thinking. It's not like you can just run into Walmart and get one. No "Aisle twelve, honey, right next to the jam." Not for this.

Ellie's little brother hadn't even been born when the doctors started the list of heart defects he had. It was pretty big. Poor Ellie couldn't pronounce most of the words, but, in any case, she didn't understand what any of it meant, anyway. One thing she could understand, though, was that her dear little brother, the one she'd been praying for since she'd realized she wanted a sibling, was probably not going to make it. The only way he possibly could would be to get a completely new heart, a heart transplant.

Fortunately, eight-year-olds are equipped with some pretty amazing powers that adults seem to have forgotten. She didn't despair, like most people would. Hope that doesn't ever end, no matter the odds, and dreams that can move the mountains, are two gifts bestowed on children. Ellie believed in miracles. She believed her nightly prayers with her parents were heard. She believed that her little brother could get a new heart.

The question: What could that faith do?

Yes, I have heard the song What Faith Can Do, and yes, I have used it to inspire this (obviously). However, this actually happened, and this song really fits my story (well, my brother's) perfectly. It's always made me cry. What better way to represent the biggest thing that's ever happened in my life?
