Blind Date

For SandyGraves

"Is it too hot for you?" Kaden asked the beautiful blonde girl trailing behind him. She shook her head, laughing.

"You know, blind people aren't super sensitive to temperature or anything. Just can't see."

He rolled his eyes, his grip growing tighter as they climbed the grassy hill. He repositioned her so that she was beside him, so that if she fell, he could catch her easier. "I know. What, I can't check to see if my best friend is okay? Is that a crime now, Piper?"

She grinned, enjoying the friendly teasing that went on between the two of them. "No. As a matter of fact, you can't."

Kaden frowned. "Aww come on. Why not?"

"Because I can take care of myself, thank you very much!"

As soon as Piper felt the ground under her feet flatten out from the steep hill, she let go of Kaden's hand, giggling as she quickly stumbled away from him.

"Piper!" Kaden shouted, jogging after her, careful not to full out yell at her.

She ignored him, continuing to stagger around. After a few more seconds of this, she wobbled a little and dropped to the ground in a heap, seemingly unfazed.

"You see? I didn't need your help!" She said smugly, her eyes positioned just to the right of where Kaden was standing.

He sighed and sat down next to Piper, trying to calm his racing heart. Even though he wished Piper wouldn't do things like this, he also knew that she hated when people told her she couldn't do something.

After being blind for fourteen years, Piper felt like she could take care of herself, but the way that people treated her didn't make that possible. Kaden was the only one that treated her like a normal human being, and that's what made them such good friends. Kaden wasn't about to ruin that by freaking out over a little stunt like this. If it made her happy, he was happy.

"You're right Pipes. You're totally independent."

Piper smiled to herself, happy to hear Kaden's submission.

"You're darn right I am," she said smugly.

"So are you ready for the real surprise?" Kaden asked excitedly. Piper nodded, her head darting around energetically. "All right. Close your eyes."

Piper shook her head, sighing in fake offense. "Haha very funny. Now just give me the surprise!"

Kaden laughed, rolling his eyes. "Impatient much? Just chill while I get it out of my bag."

Kaden fumbled with the drawstring bag as Piper sat patiently, finally pulling out a bag of Skittles.

"Tada!" He placed the bag in Piper's hands, watching her feel it as she tried to figure out what it was. Her eyebrows raised as she realized what had been handed to her.

"Are these-"

"Skittles!"

Piper grinned and handed the bag back to Kaden, signaling the beginning of the game. Kaden opened the bag and took out a Skittle. Red. He handed it to her to put in her mouth.

Without hesitation, she replied,"Red! Too easy!"

He rolled his eyes and decided to up his game. He took out two and handed them to her. Purple and green.

"Hmm. Green and...purple?"

"Dang it!" Kaden sighed, and they continued this until Piper had finished the entire bag.

"Alright. Now, we watch the clouds," Kaden said, laying back.

Piper pouted. "How am I supposed to watch the clouds? Why would you-"

"Just trust me."

Reluctantly, Piper lay down on the ground next to Kaden, her cloudy eyes staring straight up at the sky.

"Okay, so I see one that looks sort of like a bunny...kind of."

"Kaden, I don't even know what a bunny looks like!"

"Well, it's small and it's got lots of soft fur, and their tails are short and look kind of like cute fluffy spheres. But their most distinguishing features are their long, pointy ears."

Piper smiled, still looking up aimlessly at the sky. "That sounds nice Kaden. Do another one!"

"Hmm. Alright that one looks like a teapot. Teapots are roundish at the bottom, and then they have a handle where you hold it on one side. On the other side it has a long thin tube with a hole at the end where the tea comes out."

"It's like I can actually see them," Piper whispered happily. A tear slid down the side of her face as she sightlessly admired the sky.

Kaden and Piper lay under the sky for hours, Kaden meticulously describing every cloud that passed. When the sun started it's descent in the sky, Kaden stood up and helped Piper to her feet.

Without warning, Piper pulled Kaden into a huge hug. As soon as he got his balance back, he reciprocated, squeezing her tightly against his body.

"Thank you so much for today," she whispered into his ear. He grinned.

"It's no problem Pipes. Anything for you."

"I think..."

He pulled away from her, seeing a tear roll across her cheek. He cupped her face in his hand gently.

"You think what?"

She took a deep breath before continuing. "I think that I might love you Kaden."

Kaden felt a few tears of his own welling up.

"That's fantastic Piper. Because I think I might love you too."

He brought her face close to his, pressing his lips softly against hers.

They both pulled away, grinning from ear to ear.

"That was my first kiss," Piper admitted softly. "Today I've felt things that I never thought I would feel again."

"Well then just call me your miracle," Kaden whispered.

He looked up at the sky, noticing it was getting dark.

"We better go Pipes. I think I can already see a few stars in the sky."

She interlocked their hands, walking with him down the hill.

"What do stars look like?"

"Don't worry. I'll have plenty of time to explain those to you some other night."
