Fright Prompt Entry - Better Left Untouched
"Are we there yet!?" Lizzie complained. I rolled my eyes as I clutched the straps of my backpack tighter. We've been hiking in the nearby forest for about three hours now but that's because we've had to keep stopping since Lizzie complaining the whole way up.
"Only one more hour" Harvey called out from beside me.
He wasn't breaking a sweat, he's used to this whereas Lizzie, Zea and I aren't. Zea is another friend of ours that joined us but she's been quiet the whole way, kind of creepy if you ask me really but I guess I should be used to it. Lizzie groaned loudly in protest but continued to walk nonetheless. I huffed, rolling my shoulders to adjust my bag on my back. I wasn't concentrating on where I was walking and I ended up tripping over something, making me fall face-first into the dirt. I coughed, spitting out the dirt.
"Oh my god! Harriet are you ok?!" Lizzie exclaimed as everyone ran towards me. I sat up and swiped the dirt off my arms and off my knees. Blood was already trickling down my knee from the open wound though it didn't look that bad though it would need to be disinfected and washed.
"I'm fine, just hurts a little but nothing to bad" I reassured them.
"Did you trip over your own feet again?" Harvey asked, raising one eyebrow. I glared up at him.
"No, not this time" I retorted.
"Hey, guys! Look at this!" We heard Zea call out to us. We snapped our heads in her direction since she was by where I fell. I crawled to sit beside her to see what she was looking at since she had her back towards us. Lizzie and Harvey followed, our eyes wide and our mouth agape slightly at the wooden box in her hands.
"What's that?" Lizzie asked, pointing a shaky finger at the box.
"I don't know, let's find out," Zea said, sounding excited.
"Wait! What if-"
Too late, Zea opened the wooden box and I swear I felt my heart stop beating for a second. I was suddenly overcome with fear and frozen on the spot. Zea looked completely unfazed whereas Lizzie was breathing heavily and clenching her fists tightly to her chest. Harvey had spun around to look away while running his hand through his hair and mumbling to himself about how fucked up this was, who would do this. We were obviously never meant to find this. I snapped out of my state of fear and slammed the box closed so we didn't have to look at it anymore because I was about to projectile vomit in a minute.
"What the hell was that!?" Lizzie shouted. Birds scattered around, squawking loudly, scared from her raised voice.
"That was a severed hand with a real diamond ring with the symbol of greatest mafia gang that ever lived," Zea said, her voice monotoned with a hint of excitement.
"What did the card say?" Harvey asked.
"Harriet, Harvey, Lizzie and Zea, we see you"
