Aim to Engage #16 -- Arctic Waters

The ship had been at sea for months. A ship that held many people, all ready for the same challenges that lay ahead.

I looked beyond the railing of the ship and was met with the clear blue sea and sky. The temperature was dropping slowly, but over the last few days, it had become more notable. A cold wind picked up and from my experience so far, it was best to go under the deck.

Wrapping my arms around my body, in hopes of keeping myself warm, I walked to the cabins of the ship. But just as I had entered my cabin at the bottom of the ship, a sharp, piercing noise cut through the air.

My blood froze, recognising the meaning behind the noise.

I ran out of my cabin to see arctic-cold waters filling the ship.

My breathing hitched up and I waded through the fast-filling waters. Eventually, I got to the deck of the ship where about ten other scientists were looking out to the frozen waters. Another person came out from another part of the ship.

"What's happening?" She asked.

"The ship is sinking... Where is everyone else?" I managed to ask, seconds before the ship launched forward.

Everyone screamed and tried to hold onto something nearby. The captain shouted over the crashing of the ship.

"All the lifeboats are either gone or snapped because of pressure! You'll have to jump!"

Nobody did anything and the wind crashed around us. But slowly, one by one, each person jumped off the ship and into the waters below.

The ship leaned more on its side and the metal groaned. With a shaky breath, I jumped across the deck and wrapped my hands tightly around the rails.

I said a silent prayer and jumped over the side.

The freezing water hit me and I felt any heat left inside me, leave. I quickly started swimming to the surface, clothing trying to drag me to death.

My head broke the surface of the water. I looked around to see if there was anyone, anything. In the distance, I heard the remains of the ship crash into the water.

I couldn't stay in the same place for long.

It hadn't been long before I found the rest of the scientists. They helped me out of the water and onto the small iceberg.

My eyes started to droop and the voices became incomprehensible.

I had to stay awake. I had to stay awake...

°

What I could only guess was a few hours later,—before I had fallen asleep, the sun was up. Now it was nighttime—I woke up. The stars stared down and lit the ocean up.

Around me, where the rest of the scientists, fast asleep. The captain kept a lookout.

"Where are we?" I asked.

"Hopefully in the direction of Antartica. And hopefully not far at that," He replied, not bothering to turn around and look at me.

Hopefully...
