15-02 never took her eyes off of Dr. Fox.
She watched his every movement, only looking away when he looked at her.
"You understand why you're here, yes?" Fox finally said simply.
"Y...yes sir," 15-02 said nervously, struggling to keep her voice level. Her heart pounded in her chest as he stepped closer to her again.
"And you understand what you did is wrong?"
"Yes sir."
"And will it happen again?"
"No sir."
Fox gave her a suspicious glare before turning away from her.
"You're quite the little troublemaker, 15-02. I'm surprised Kahl and Penne haven't terminated you yet."
15-02 stared at the ground guiltily now, then tensed when she felt Dr. Fox grab her arm and hold it up to him. She felt something stick in her skin, making her glance over.
There was some kind of machine connected to a wire that Dr. Fox had stuck into her arm. She wasn't sure what to think. This didn't seem good. In fact, this seemed bad. Very, very bad.
Dr. Fox remained silent as he taped the wire down to keep it secure before powering on the machine.
"Stay here. I have important business to attend to."
"... yes, sir." Not like I have much choice.
Fox nodded simply before walking out, leaving 15-02 alone with the machine as it began doing whatever it was programmed to do.
It wasn't long after he walked out before he raced away to his office and closed the door, not letting go of the doorknob. His heart pounded in his chest.
"... I hate having to be around them."
He took a deep breath as chills ran up and down his spine. He slowly released his grip and stared at his paw.
His gaze landed on the place where the extra "finger" was supposed to be — the place where it was cut off by his own son.
"I miss you, Hexon."
He stared at the picture on his desk with him, his wife, and his son, Hexon. He picked it up and examined it, then held it close to his chest and closed his eyes. A single tear rolled down his cheek.
He used to be so happy.
But now, he was a monster.
"It's your fault," the voice of his wife echoed in his mind. "I told you this was a bad idea. But you didn't listen."
His heart skipped a beat and he spun around to see a ghostly figure glare down at him before fading away.
His whole body trembled. He still felt like he was being watched. He could feel his wife glaring down at him. He could feel his son looking at him with terrified, pleading eyes.
"Why did you betray me, Daddy?" Hexon's voice rang in his ears now.
"I'm sorry."
That's all Dr. Fox could say.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I should have listened. I shouldn't have betrayed you. I shouldn't have started this project."
The feeling of the judging stares didn't leave. It only got worse.
At last, he was snapped out of his thoughts by a knock on the door.
"Dr. Fox? Are you okay in there?"
It was Kahl.
Fox cleared his throat.
"Er... y-yes, Kahl, everything's fine. I'm just, uh... I'm busy."
"If you say so. You brought 02 to the check-up room, correct?"
"Yes. She's there now."
"Thank you."
Footsteps echoed as Kahl left again. Fox looked back at the photo before putting it down.
He wished he still had his family.
He wished he wasn't a monster.
He wished to go back.
