CONTAIN THESE DEMONS sequel to "no more"
A few months before the first
Washington Lodge trip
Bo-Anne Tracy sat in the driver's seat of her dad's pickup truck. She had borrowed it to take herself to the party that her closest friend from her new school, Jessica, had invited her to. It was a celebration party to commemorate the first week of the school year (her junior year), and to warm up Bo to all of Jessica's friends.
Bo-Anne had surprisingly made a great first impression on one of the most popular girls in her grade, Jess Riley. Especially since they had almost the same schedule, the only difference being Bo's theater arts class because she was too much of a chicken to take Debate as her speech credit. Arguing and winning arguments were never her strong suit.
When Jess had invited Bo to her party, she didn't know what to say besides "maybe?". Bo was obviously going to go, however. Parties are where her bubbly personality flourished. Her first week was already hectic with getting to know people and trying to get ahead in her school work and she had felt like this was the perfect getaway from those responsibilities that were chasing her.
Looking out of her left rear mirror, she could see the string lights over the wooden porch that lit up the path to the party. The parking lot of the property she sat in was stacked with cars. She had estimated a good 15 of them alongside her own, which didn't surprise her. Everyone suddenly became obsessed with getting to know Bo when they first saw her walk with Jessica in the hallways of school. She could hardly imagine the amount of people that were just begging to go to a party held by Jess herself...a Jessicarty, if you will.
She fixed the mascara under her blue eyes in the same mirror, before exiting her truck, and putting her keys in the pocket of her white-washed denim jacket. She tilted her head above the top of her vehicle to get a good look at the Riley's place. The house was a good suburban size, with exquisite masonry walls, lined with large flower bushes that were illuminated under the porch light. Bo mustered up her usual confidence and followed the stone path to the backyard, where she could hear the commotion of the party coming from.
As she rounded the house and approached the backyard, she caught eyes with Jess, who squealed and ran from the table where millions of snacks were displayed to meet Bo. The young girl engulfed her in a tight hug and let go of her just as quickly, placing her hands on her shoulders and stretching them out to her full arm's length. Jess was wearing skinny jeans and a warm, olive, knit sweater that was appropriate to the weather. It was the end of August, so the air was slightly chilly, and the leaves were beginning to change color.
"I'm so glad you could make it, Bo!" Jessica squabbled, and she began to pull Bo over to the group of girls she was talking to over the snack table. She looked around at her surroundings, taking in the large backyard that Jess had. The same plants and a white picket fence circled the entire property, and glass doors revealed the luxurious inside of the house. Lights were strung all throughout the grassy backyard that was filled with kids drinking out of red plastic cups, and screwing around together.
"Hey, guys," Jessica shouted over the people to her crew, "Bo actually decided to come!"
The four girls looked up from their own conversation and greeted Bo with enthusiasm. She knew the names of two of the girls, the rest of them she had only known their faces well enough. Bo had recognized Ashley, who was in her Economics class, and Emily, who was in Chemistry with her.
"You know Ashley, and Emily," Jessica introduced. Ashley was wearing an oversized hoodie, and a striped beanie over her short, red hair, and Emily was wearing a leather jacket and the same old tough smile she always had, "and then this is Sam and Beth." She pointed to the blonde girl, Sam, who was eyeing Bo was a small smile, as if she was trying to read her, and a girl with black hair, Beth, who's eyes twinkled at her in a smile. Bo returned the excitement displayed in Beth and waved at them.
"Beth, where's Hannah?" Jessica asked her. Beth raised her eyebrows and smirked.
"She's talking with Mike over by the fire pit." She turned around to point 'Hannah' out, and the rest of the crew followed. "Over there." Bo leaned over slightly to see a teen girl, who looked almost the same as Beth, but with glasses. She was hovering next to Mike who was also hanging out with a couple of his own friends. "Want me to bring her over here to meet Ms. Wonder Woman?" She gave Bo a friendly, teasing look. She giggled quietly at her remark.
"I'd love to meet her. Is she your sister?" She asked, crossing her arms over her chest to keep herself warm. Her jean jacket folded in sychronization.
"Yup, she's my younger sister." There was a slight pause, "by like a couple minutes, but I still hold it over her head, sometimes." Beth joked, before turning around and shouting for Hannah. Bo put two and two together and concluded that they were twins, rather than just sisters. "Hannah Marie Washington! You are needed!"
At the sound of Beth's unashamed yelling, the 'Mike' that she had pointed to and his group turned to the girls who were the sudden center of attention. Bo looked over at the motely crew of teenage boys. The four of them peered over curiously, one of them had made eye contact with her, but she deflected it quickly, trying her best to ignore the stare. She had recognized the boy to be in her Theater Arts class, but she was always overwhelmed by the company of one of the theater kids, Kimberly, who took a certain liking to Bo.
As Hannah raced up to be with them, the boys began to stagger behind. Bo felt herself grow nervous, not only was she worried about her first impression with the girls, but now she had to worry about her first impression with the guys.
"Guys..." Jessica dragged out her words with her certain kind of charm, stepping closer to them.
"What's up, Jess?" Mike started to toss a football between his hands as his group of friends messed around behind him. "Figured we'd break the gender segregation going on." He shrugged.
"Ooh, that's a big word," She teased with a small smile on her face, "I'm impressed."
Mike laughed at her flirting, as if it were working. No wondered how Hannah had felt seeing that in front of her face. She was quite obviously into him. Bo looked over at the girl who stood next to Beth and gave her a wave. Hannah waved back, trying to hide the jealousy in her eyes. Bo rounded the table so she was standing with the bigger group of girls, leaving Jessica to flirt all she wanted by herself.
Beth wrapped an arm around Hannah's shoulder as she began to snack on some chips, "Hannah, this is Bo. She's the new girl in the grade below us with Jessica."
"Oh, hi! I'm Hannah!" She formally introduced herself. "Where did you move from?"
Bo gave her a friendly smile. "I lived in Vancouver before. My dad was offered another job here in Alberta, so that's why we're here now." Bo explained. Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around the twins and the familiar face of one of the boys popped out between them.
"You guys weren't just gonna introduce the Washington family without including the most important member, were you?" He teased the two of them, while never taking his eyes off Bo. The boy very much looked related to the twins, with his curly, black hair and playful facial features.
"In fact," Beth rolled her eyes, "we were. Figured we'd save her the headache!" She got back at him, and punched him lightly in his gut. He doubled over and cried out, overdramatically. Bo tried to hold in her laugh, but it was too late. She was quick to cackle loudly. Josh rolled over to face her, an amused look on his face.
He popped up, and returned to messing around with the twins, forcefully shaking Hannah. "I'm Josh." He smiled at her, while turning to Beth, grabbing her head in his hands from behind and moving it around spontaneously.
"That's Bo." Beth answered for her, smacking Josh away from her. "She's just moved in from Vancouver."
"I know." He continued to stare down Bo with a smile. Bo's attention, however, bounced around between the whole Washington family in front of her. "She's in my Theater Arts class. Never got around to properly introducing myself, though." He admitted, his grin growing wider, and stupider-looking.
"That's fine," she dismissed it, her nose scrunching up, "I was preoccupied with talking to Kimberly Sanders."
"Ahhh, old Kimmy." He reminisced. "Last year, in our Advanced Comp class, she wrote a whole 20-minute speech on the Dewey Decimal system, just so that we wouldn't have to start our next project for another day."
"Really?" Bo curled her lip in disbelief. Josh nodded his head and giggled with a stupid expression on his face.
"Yeah! It was boring as hell, but it was better than having to work on another paper for the rest of the hour."
"I had a class like that too last year, at my old school. I always waited until the night before it was due to even start it." She exclaimed. "Ended the class with a "C", though!"
"Me too!" Josh cried out with a laugh. "I did my speech on the history of superhero comics." He placed his hands on his hips and puffed out his chest slightly, like in a Superman pose.
"I love superheroes!" She yelled over the other conversations, enthusiastically. "I did mine on Little Debbie snacks." Bo faked a snobbish look when she spoke, playfully bragging.
"I love Little Debbies! Especially those brownies that taste like straight up chemicals."
"Cosmic brownies!? Those are my favorite!"
"And Swiss Rolls!?"
"Swiss Rolls, yes!"
"Okay, well," Beth cut in the middle of their moment, "we're gonna leave you two now," she held onto Hannah's arm and quickly dashed away with her sister in stride behind her. Bo watched wide-eyed as they went to go join the others, who had migrated to the bonfire once again.
Josh chuckled nervously, as he whipped his head back to face the young girl.
"Ha. Being a jokester runs in the family." He taunted the girls behind their backs. "They saved the best for last, though." He pointed to himself. "Being the baby of the family has it's perks."
"Kind of like being the only child, I'm guessing?" She put her hands in her back pocket and rolled on her heels for a second. "But probably less lonely."
"You're an only child? Man, that's awesome."
"It's really not." She peered over at the group again, where Hannah and Beth were talking it up with Mike. "I wish I had siblings like you. You all seem to get along and have fun."
Josh nodded his head, in understanding, "Yeah, it's not always fun, but for the most part, we get along just fine. Sometimes it's hard being the annoying, younger brother, but it's also not that bad. Like, if I want a swiss roll for dinner, I can have one with little argument."
"Right, right," Bo laughed at his joke, her eyes squinting, and nose scrunching.
"You haven't met the boys yet, have you?" Josh suddenly perked up again. "Come with me." He reached out and held onto her wrist and dragged her over to the fire pit. Bo's eyes widened at the touch, but she didn't fight it, to her own surprise. She didn't jerk her hand away in repulse and instead allowed him to lead her. There was something comforting and friendly about it.
The group surrounded by other classmates welcomed Josh back with their usual excitement. Bo gathered with Beth and Hannah, who were standing off to the side, their backs to the fire to keep warm.
"Guys, this is Bo. She likes swiss rolls." Josh said for her. He forcefully turned one of his buddies around to face her. "This is Chris." He shook his blonde friend around as he spoke. "He doesn't like swiss rolls, so you probably won't get along with him as well as you do with me." He teased.
Chris just rolled his eyes and gave her a friendly smile. His glasses reflected the fire from behind Bo. Josh then jumped onto the attractive friend, Mike. "This one's George Michael. He's gay."
"That's not my name, and I'm not gay," The brown haired boy argued back, hitting him in the arm. "I'm very much into girls." He turned back to Bo and gave her a wink. Bo stopped herself from blushing, understanding that he was just a player and didn't really mean anything by it. His hair was sleeked back and styled to perfection, and his face was not hard to look at. Which had attracted her at first, but seeing that so many girls had themselves tied around his finger, he ended up being repelled by Bo.
"That's what he keeps telling us, at least." Josh continued on with his joke, seizing him by the shoulders and flipping him around to look him in the eye, "Listen, Mike. We love and understand you, don't be afraid to tell us how you really feel."
Bo let out a snort at the sight of Mike removing himself from Josh's stone cold grasp. Once he was free, Josh moved on to his other friend. A quiet looking boy with extremely curly and black hair that formed an afro shape on top of his head. Josh leaned against him, to make fun of his short height.
"This wise guy here is Matt! He's cool, but all he talks about is his nana, so I would advise you to not bring up potato salad around him."
"I do not." Matt shoved Josh's side off of him. "Nice to meet you, Bo." He stuck out his hand for her to shake. She was surprised at the gesture, she had never seen a peer try and shake her hand all formal-like. Bo gave him a warm smile and took hold of his hand, giving it one solid up-and-down. "That's Josh." He mocked the boy, "He joined the circus as a clown, run while you can."
Josh only laughed and pushed Matt back.
"Now that we're all acquainted," Jess interrupted, striding up to meet the new group formulating between the boys and Bo, "why don't we let the fun actually begin?" A smirk grew on her face and she raced back to open a gate in her fencing that lead to another side of her backyard. The troop ventured to get a full view of what Jessica was revealing.
It was a luxurious pool room, with those long chairs and a heated towel rack. In the middle was a wide pool dug into the ground that was lit up by small, circular lights that were embedded in the ceramic tiled walls.
"All of us, sexy, hormonal teenagers, and a pool? Sounds like the perfect recipe of fun to me." Jessica leaned against her fence.
"Jess, it's like -700 degrees out right now." Ashley piped in from behind. The hostess only laughed in amusement.
"Where's your sense of adventure, dear Ash?" She teased before waltzing into the pool area.
"Okay, but no one brought swim suits or anything?" Emily crossed her arms as she stood by Bo. Jessica rolled her eyes and gracefully took off her sweater, exposing her salmon colored bra.
"So?" She threw the sweater aside on a pool chair before bending over and taking off her shoes. "Are you guys coming in? Or are you gonna make me have a good time by myself?"
Emily shrugged her shoulders in surrender, and was first to walk up to Jessica, following her lead, and taking off her clothes.
Bo grew terrified at the thought of exposing herself just to go swimming, especially in front of people she had just formally met that night. She slowly made some back up steps as the rest of the group, one by one, began to undress themselves for the late night dip. Bo was the last one left and she crossed her arms over her jean jacket as if she were already vulnerable, watching as most of the group had already jumped into the pool.
She almost walked away until Josh had spoken up to her. He was standing by the entrance of the pool, watching her as she stood behind.
"Can't swim?" He asked.
"Something like that." Bo admitted, snapping out of her funk and taking a few steps closer to Josh.
"Ahhh," he breathed out, before taking off his own shirt, "perfect, I'll teach you!"
"No, no, that's fine-"
"Nah, come on." He gave her a goofy smile, "We'll go in together if it makes you feel any better."
Bo looked down at the ground and smiled to herself before taking a deep breath, and letting out a sigh of defeat.
"Alright, alright." She shook her head as she made her way into the pool area. Bo took the chair next to Josh's stuff, setting down her jacket on top of the woven furniture. "If I get sick, my mom will kill me." Bo chuckled, playing with the hem of her pink shirt.
"Well, that's fine, as long as you don't get sick of me!" Josh bantered, taking off his shoes.
"Wouldn't dream of it," she gave it back to him, a playful look in her eye. She mustered up more confidence before committing to taking off her shirt, trying to make it as discreet and natural as possible. Bo kicked off her boots and slipped out of her socks before grabbing a hold of Josh's outstretched hand. They moved to the edge of the pool, standing on the coping, watching as Ashley finally jumped in before them. Jessica and Emily sat on the steps that lead out, talking it up with Sam, who was lying on her back in the water. Hannah and Beth were splashing around, while Matt, Chris and Mike were full-on trying to drown each other, playfully.
"3..." Josh started counting down, and Bo braced herself to jump with him, "2,1." He slurred the last two numbers together, confusing her, before pushing her in with a quick shove. She screamed as she fell into the water, the cold consuming her. When Bo resurfaced, she could hear Josh cackling above her. She spit the water that was caught in her mouth at him, getting him back. He pretended to cower at the projectile shot. Suddenly, an evil smile spread across his face.
Josh backed himself up, until he was touching the fencing, and then began to sprint towards the pool, lifting himself up in the air and bringing his knees to his chest. Bo watched in a mix of amazement and fear as he plunged into the water, performing the most perfect, yet most terrible, cannonball she had ever witnessed.
Huge waves were created from the impact of his body hitting the water, and they engulfed Bo once again. Her head bobbled under the waves, before coming back up again like a buoy. Josh's own head popped up two feet in front of her, scaring her. She jumped back in the water, her eyes wide and mouth agape. He continued to laugh at her reaction. The water seemed to attack her in response to her sudden movement, getting into her nose and making her choke.
"Woah! Are you alright?" Josh's enjoyment turned to concern as Bo swam to the coping of the pool, setting her arms on top of it, and coughing loudly. She nodded her head up-and-down, and then giggled. The sound of her laughter brought the smile back on Josh's face.
Not long after, she completely forgot about her insecurity in exposing herself in her undergarments. It was replaced by the feeling of immunity to her responsibilities as she hung out with people whom she could see becoming very good friends with. Bo never wanted the night to end, however, she was excited to see the future these individuals held for her. Each and everyone.
But especially the cute Washington boy with the stupid smile.
