She had learnt that bad habits were incredibly easy to form. Most night she found herself at a new party drinking away her problems. She found herself slacking off on her schoolwork and ditching more lessons.

She had completely lost the will to try in all her lessons. Just getting up in the morning seemed to have been getting harder and harder. She was terrified of her parents noticing this change and was glad they had not yet realised.

Tonight was no different she had just gotten here but had already made her way to the kitchen for drinks. She was afraid to let herself think, her thoughts ached and were everything she wanted to forget.

She was stupid. She had invited malachi to the party she doesn't know why she did it. Her heart ached when he messaged her, having incredibly missed the contact between them both.

When she had decided to move on, her plan wasn't to completely stop talking to him but it seems they both drifted away and they both stopped trying to contact the other. She had gone through this once with him before and thought she could take the pain again though it was much more painful than she remembered.

She felt someone kiss her cheek and smiled noticing jordan. He grinned at her as he wrapped his arms around her waist "you okay?"

"i'm fine" she lied giving him a smile, he didn't notice the lie instead nodded his head "good, you want to dance?" he asked pointing over to where people seemed to be dancing.

She nodded her head and he led her to the middle of the room, his hand hovering over her waist.

She needed the distraction so she danced with him, keeping her focus on jordan as he smiled brightly at her.

They danced for a bit but suddenly the loud music and stuffy room was too much for her. She excused herself and jordan just nodded as she walked off.

She went into the garden and sighed as she sat down on the steps. She didn't want to be here, but it was the only thing keeping her from crying herself to sleep.

Only enzo and elijah were here at the party too, the girls having declined after drinking nearly every evening this week.

She heard the back door open but kept her stare at the sky and the couple of stars she could see dotted around.

She felt someone sit beside herself but still didn't think much of it instead being stuck in her own thoughts.

"do you want some?" she heard the person beside herself say. Her body froze recognising that voice anywhere she cursed herself for not realising sooner.

Though realising what he had said she turned to look at him he was offering her the joint he seemed to have rolled up just now. Before recently she would have never tried those things but cause of recent events she had found herself accepting the offer whenever it was given.

Similarly she now nodded as he handed it to her. She grabbed it out of his hand feeling the familiar softness of his hand and nearly flinching at the feeling.

She put it to her mouth and took a long drag and waited a couple seconds before exhaling.

"when did you start smoking?" malachi questioned beside her. She handed it to him and her eyes flicked over to his "i could ask you the same thing"

"touché" he replied nodding as he took the joint and put it to his own lips, her eyes involuntarily looked at them and she watched how he took a drag before exhaling, smoke filling the sky in front of him.

When she finally looked up to his eyes again, she noticed the mischievous glint in them as he looked at her. She blushed knowing he saw that she had been staring at his lips and looked away at the sky again.

For a second, it was dead silent the muffled noise of the music barely even being heard. He passed her the blunt once again and she took it gratefully.

She hated the silence between them, it felt unnatural as they always had something to say when they were around each other.

"you two always seem to have too much to say when you're around each other" her mum teased as she booped her nose, mariah giggled blushing.

"and that will never change" malachi spoke up confidently, mariah looked over at him "promise?"

He gave her a bright smile and locked their pinkies together "promise"

"look mariah i-" malachi began as she turned to look at him but his words were cut off when jordan ran outside "there you are, i've been looking everywhere for you mary"

She looked over at jordan and smiled "well here I am, let's go back inside?" she avoided looking at mal feeling ashamed of the nickname she was called. It felt wrong coming from anyone else. She felt his eyes bore into her back but she ignored him as she got up and followed jordan into the house. She didn't dare look back at mal.
