We can influence good lessons though kind thoughts, and far nobler ideas through comedy.

Both are false.

Each will drain you, but supply you with more to drain. Peering at the darkness will provide an immediate dump of horror, but leave you drained of some ambition. You grow accustomed to this, but a bit of that horror comes back often more frightening than the last.

Vise versa cat videos will fill you with sweet-sweet dopamine that will tickle you pink only to leave you in a dump, but sustain you with a nice dose of cat faces to heal your inner wounds and a purr to heal a puppy's heart. A puppy who cuddles with you because you showed the cat kindness.
