The future of my youth was huge.
We'd landed on the moon
And Mars was just a skip away,
ignorance was dying,
while Vietnam was the end of war
and cancer would be cured,
the starving masses would be fed
with all humanity secured.

The future seems much smaller now,
the moon seems far away
and wealth seems all we care about
while wars start every day.

Belief in science seems to fade,
and false prophets rear their head.
We once taught evolution
and how to save the earth,
now science loses to ignorance,
giving lies and myths great worth.

It seems that we march backward
into ignorance and gloom,
as if by living in the past,
our future's got more room.

I'm told I am a pessimist
with nothing good to say,
that in speaking of the future,
I should be positive today.
So let me say in clearest voice
that the future is quite safe,
there is no doubt it comes this way
and will reach this very spot.
Yes, the future is coming to our earth,
whether we are here or not.
