Chapter 5
Avia woke up in the morning to the sound of birds chirping a light flooding into the room. She looked over at the clock, which read 8:37 AM. She decided to go downstairs and get some breakfast, where she found Sandra making scrambled eggs.
"Hey Sandra, good morning," Avia said, mostly just to announce her presence.
"Hey Avia, good morning. You can call me mom if you would like," Sandra replied.
"Okay then, mom," Avia said, trying it on for size. She liked the ring of the word mom, and it fit well.
That moment, Scott walked in.
"Hey honey, what are you cooked up there?" Scott asked.
"I'm making the special eggs that I know you love," Sandra replied
"Great, put me down for seconds," Scott announced, and sat down at the island bar in the center of the kitchen, waiting for their breakfast to be ready.
"So, what have you been up to today, kid?" Scott asked.
"I came down about two minuets before you had, and had lesson about proper names to call parents. So far, I have learned that you are mom, and Sandra is dad, or didI mix those two up?" Avia asked, trying to get a laugh out of Scott.
"Haha, very funny," Scott said sarcastically, and a little playfully.
A minuet later, Sandra turned her back to the stove, and in her hands were two plates of srambled eggs, but there was something different about them. She took a bite, and a fantastic taste overwhelmed her mouth. It was a little bit like pepper, but salty at the same time. It also had a savory pinch to it. She just couldn't pin down the taste, it was like nothing she had ever tried before. She whimpered in delight before swallowing.
"What did you put in these eggs, they taste amazing!" Avia exclaimed, not knowing any other way to word that sentence.
"It is made with this seasoning called Cagle Foods Seasoning. You can only find it in Texas, where we used to live. If any of our friends from there come to visit, we ask them to bring some of that seasoning with them. We put it in almost everything, it is so good," Scott more rambled than said. It looked like he just wanted to get back to enjoying his eggs.
Everybody had seconds afterwards, and then they went into town.
Cresentville was beautiful, and had everything you would expect in a small town. It had a local market, bar, barber, bed and breakfast, diner, sheriffs station, and many other things. She realized that everybody that inhabited the town had a small animal on their shoulders. Some had birds, fish, lions, horses, dogs, cats, and any other animal that you could possibly think of. She realized that some people had the same kind of animals, but nobody that she saw had a tiger on her shoulder, like her. She thought this was really strange, seeing as though her parents animals were also sitting on other peoples shoulders. They pulled into a nearby electronics store parking lot, and piled out of the car.
"Why are we here?" Avia asked, knowing that it will probably be a good experience.
"We are going to let you pick out one device of your choice. It can cost anything, and be anything. We will pay all of the expenses. This will be like a welcome to the family present," Sandra, or should I say, Avia's mom said. That moment, Avia's heart filled with joy. She had never had anything nice or expensive before. She had no idea what she was going to choose either. The family walked into the store, where the sales clerk greeted the Swans by name.
"Hello Sandra, Scott," the salees clerk said. "Who is the little girl you have with you today?"
"This is Avia, our new daughter. We adopted her just yesterday, and we are getting her a welcome present," Avia's dad said.
"You want thingamabobs? We've got more than 20. Everyone cares, it's a big deal, but we want more," and the sales clerk left, humming Part Of Your World from The Little Mermaid.
Sandra and Scott let Avia roam free, looking at all of the devices until she picked, but there was so much to choose from. She already knew she was getting a phone, so she wasn't going to get another on. There were laptops of all makes and models. There were tablets, reading devices, Ipods, the whole nine yards.
Eventually, Avia was torn between a laptop, and a Ipad air. All of a sudden, she heard a voice whispering in her ear.
"Get the laptop, it is the better choice," the voice said, gentle and calming, but still completely horrifying. She set down the two devices in her hands, and ran over to her new parents, and told them about her predicament.
"Oh my gosh, her conscience spoke to her for the first time! This is amazing," Avia's mom exclaimed. Avia wasn't sure what all of the chatter and excitement was about.
"What are you guys talking about?" Avia asked.
"We will explain it when we get home, now have you picked out your gift?" Scott asked.
"Ya dad, i have decided on the laptop," Avia replied, trying out her best gameshow host impersonation.
Avia's parents payed for the laptop she decided on, the one with the pink, metallic keyboard, and the drove home.
