Episode 29: The Day after Cairo
Frame sighed as he sat down on the crate outside of the abandoned shed they had found during the night, he held his hand up to his hand as he was lost in thought.
"Frame....what are we going to do?" Brandon asked as everyone either sat down, or to just rest....they were all tired....and defeat was in their heart's as they sat here waiting.
"I don't know....For the first time....I don't know." Frame said as he continued to think, but his thought's trailed off as he looked at Malcom who rode up to them on his horse.
"Frame....for you." He said as he dismounted his horse, and held a piece of paper toward's Frame, who merley just took it from his hand's.
Everyone else was too tired, to even worry about looking at him....they couldn't even stand, but now...they were a low Army, less than a hundred of the Guard were here, and only Brandon, He, Malcom, and Neon, remained they hadn't seen Presley at all, so they assumed the worst at best.
"Nathan is inviting us to meet him...." Frame said in shock as he held the piece of paper to Brandon, who took it without hesitation and read it quickly a bit too quickly.
"He want's us to meet with him, back in Cairo....not as Victor's nor Defeated....but merley equal's." Brandon read the letter, but after he finished everyone stared at him in shock and surprise.
"What choice do we have? The Army is gone, and what can less than a hundred men, and four officer's do, we we're casted out by the Empire, We have nothing left, but to comply." Malcom said as he looked at everyone, but Frame who he knew would be stubborn enough to not agree.
"You're Right.." He heard the word's and when he went to look at who said it, he was speechless to know the word's came from Frame....who sat there, silent, and speechless.
"You're right, we have no choice....we either comply...or we die, but it be better we die honorably then die the other way." Frame said as he stood up slowly and approached the group of men, but they all listened none daring to interrupt him.
"As such....I see no reason why we should dare to ignore this request.....Does anyone else, disagree with this?" Frame asked as he looked around at the men, but none of them disagreed with him. They didn't want to surrender or be considered the thought of being defeated, but what choice did they have now?
"Whatever you decide General, we will stand by you." A Guard stood up, while using his rifle to support him as he did, but when he did the other's joined him and gave a cheer hoping it would at least cheer him up at least.
"Then....We will go together....Not as the Defeated....Yet as Equal's, and as brother's in Arms." Frame stated once more as the rest nodded in agreement, he could only hope everything would turn up good when they would arrive.
He could hope Nathan would keep to his end of the Deal.....He hoped.
*******
Nathan was surprised when he saw the British Patrol's arrive with the men he considered his Enemy hour's before, the British Soldier's lined up on either side of them as they made their way up the hill and dropped their weapon's, but as they did the British Soldier's saluted in a way to honor them.
The Officer's he knew as Brandon Tilson, Malcolm Magruder, and Brayden Cho were held back from the main group of Soldier's who were told to be given the best treatment for those wounded or tired.
And that's when he met.....him. The British Soldier's arrived up the hill in a tight square around their target, but when they reached him the front opened and there he was.....the so called 'Legendary' Frame himself.
When he saw the opening the man took the moment and walked forward to stand directly infront of Nathan who was bafaled really.
Frame was slightly shorter than him, his posture told him he was still a sight to be seen and still terryfying, his uniform was unothodox....a White Trenchcoat could be seen underneath his large black coat, and on his trenchcoat on his right chest were medal's...many at best, but what finished the collection was his hat which seemed to be a tricorn with the symbol of a eagle on the top end of it.
"General." Nathan said as he gave him a salute, but when Frame stared at him coldly, Nathan was surprised when Frame returned the Salute. A Very quick Salute at best though.
"General..." Frame said as he shaked Nathan's hand, this was going better than Nathan thought....he actually never thought this would happen.
"I assume there is a reason why you brought me out here, and decided to consider us Equal's after, what we just went through?" Frame asked clearly irate as he was lead inside the headquarters' they had used during the preparation for the battle itself.
"Even though we were enemies today, I hold nothing against you....though I feel as if though we are the only honorable men left in this age, and as such I wished to give you an offer, and also explain and talk to you about a few thing's." Nathan stated as the British Soldier's outside had closed the door after they both walked in, it was just the two of them....at least until a maid brought a plate or two and two cup's as well.
"Despite the circumstance's, I doubt I have any choice in saying no now." Frame stated as the two men sat down slowly, but with one wave of Nathan's hand the maid and anyone else in the building left....clearly this discussion was only to be between them.
"I want this to be only between us, our conversation will only go to us and only us, I pray that you will honor this and not tell a soul after." Nathan stated as he grabbed one of the cup's that was filled with wine, but noticed that Frame had did the same.
"Despite most thing's, I know when to keep thing's to myself." The other man stated as he took a sip from the cup and stared at the fire that the other's had lit for them in the fire place.
"I know, that you and you're compatriot's are no longer in the Continental Empire....and the leader of the confederacy has contacted me earlier, Europe has pledged itself to the Confederacy and it's leader gave me a tall order for me to follow..." Nathan stated as he leaned forward and whispered in a way.
"So the Demon gave you an order? What was it?" Frame asked as he peered his eye's away from the fire, but very slowly as he stared at the other man before him.
"To bring you to them in chain's, only to be executed." Nathan said, some hint of him not wanting to do this could be heard in his tone....at least to Frame anyway.
"However....I made a promise to two people, that I would see you alive and well....so I had to make the biggest decision in my life." Nathan said as he leaned back clearly not wanting to tell the other man what it was as he sputtered slightly.
"You will be sentenced to Exile on the island of Isla Esperanza, an island in the Atlantic, in exchange as long as I live....you live as well." Frame looked at the other man with a stern look first and then a confused one, yet he knew he wasn't doing this for him....no he figured who the first person he was talking about was....he had his suspicions.
"Exile? That's new, but fair....I suppose most people now would like to see me suffer..." Frame stated as he took another sip from the cup, but soon stared at the ground in thought.
"Not really, on Tex La'Eveclu you will be treated like a king....the manor there is more like a palace than anything else, and it's aisles.....beautiful, although to the people....they will think you will suffer there." Nathan said to reassure the other man who seemed to be slightly fazed by this.
"A King....this world has too many King's....it doesn't need another one, but I appreciate the honesty and compassion." Frame said as he placed the cup down on the tray again, but this time he left it there and clasped his hand's together.
"Indeed....I think you know about, You're king though....and how he deceived everyone he promised to help and free?" Nathan said as he looked around the room first, and then back at the other man who seemed to be thinking at the time.
"I always saw it, I just didn't want to believe it, so I was deluded....my Friend's were deluded, and everyone in the Revolt was deluded by a man I considered my friend" Frame stated as he sighed, everything in the Revolt, everything they fought for in thinking, Invading Russia and Europe was meaning they would 'Free' those people from tyranny and the ironic thing was, they were tricked and deceived.
"God Damn's those who deceives their way's to Rule, and other's who follow that person in the same act, as to how I found out about you're standing in the Empire....Marshal Presley was attacked and killed by King Steven's personal Elite Guard and Army....no-one was left alive,no-one." Nathan said with remorse, despite them being their enemy once they were still human and he had some sympathy for them....even now.
"And so another one fall's, and one a traitor has already left." Frame stated again as he grabbed the refilled cup and took a sip from it.
"Regarding one, Marshal Mill's I suppose? She fled on to a boat going to England...we suspect she is leaving all trace's of her life before hand behind her." Nathan said as he handed Frame one of the spoon's from the tray and then a plate, clearly they were going to eat something at least.
"Yes....though, I could care less now....I just want to know what will happen to them." Frame nudged outside to the other's who were all sitting around or were on edge of being here he could tell.
"They....unfortunately cannot come with you in Exile, the remainder of you're Guard however, will be allowed to go....and before you ask, the reason they cannot go is because the Confederacy believe they will assist you in escaping, you're guard on the other hand are more reasonable since they will have no weapon's and cannot be integrated into our army yet....I hope you understand that." Nathan spoke as he took a sip from the wine cup now, but soon after lifted the cover, over one of the plate's and looked at the food under it.
"I understand....if they came, it would mean that I could escape more easily, and plus we want to make it seem like I'm suffering, Right?" Frame chuckled at the end after he spoke, but when he did Nathan returned the chuckle as well.
"I suppose yes, Though...we have been given the right to allow anyone who wishes' to join you in Exile, their welcome to go." Nathan nodded to Frame who merely sat there and took it all in, but there was still one last thing he needed to know.
"My daughter, was on a ship going to England....on board a ship with a Boy named Shay Hawthorn." Frame said, but he noticed the surprised look on Nathan's face when he mentioned the boy....he couldn't be.
"You're last name is Hawthorn isn't it?" Frame asked as Nathan finally looked up at him, but he smiled slightly before nodding.
"Yes....and I think you know my Wife, Elizabeth one of the two who want's you to live, the other is Zachary cook....a man you're probably familiar with, though as for you're daughter....if you wish for me to not let her come into Harm's way....then yes I honor that....and I will respect that as you're final wish before Exile." Nathan said again before he put his cup down, and was ready for this to end, but he didn't want to rush it.
"All my life, I thought I was doing something for the greater good, I got betrayed three time's now...lost my friend's, My family, a lot of people I came to respect, and I wonder to myself why am I still here, while they sit up there in the heaven's? Then I think to my Daughter....the one thing despite the other's out there that keep's me going, if she....was harmed in any way, or killed....I wouldn't know what to do." Frame said as he stared at the ground in sadness, but was met by Nathan's stern tone.
"Good men are hard to come by now, even worse the bitter are Devil's....I will protect you're daughter....I promise you that, Friend." Nathan leaned forward and put his hand on the other man's shoulder, but Frame only smiled slightly when he heard him.
Friend? That would be a new one.
*******
Brandon and the other's soon stood up, after they had noticed the two exiting the building....yet they both looked a bit pleased, and a bit saddened in a way.
"You know I'm all my life, I've never met a man as kind as you....General." Brandon could hear Frame speak as they were finally about to rap up their conversation.
"As to you....General." Nathan said as he nodded and bowed slightly, but was returned by the same action's from Frame.
"These men....will take you, and You're guard to the ship....May god be with you always sir." Nathan said as he motioned his hand over to a group of Soldier's who were crowding around a single car, and several other's as well.
Although when Frame started to walk over to the Car, and the Remainder of the Guard joined him and climbed into the Transport's, Brandon and the other's were shocked and angry that they would not be joining them in their trip and life long Exile.
"I know the circumstance's, Gentlemen....but to make up for it, You three are to enlist into the British Army...You're rank's will remain, but as for you're past achievement's they will fade into dust." Nathan spoke to them as they all watched Frame enter the Car this time, he was struggling to get in, and when he did he collapsed on to the chair....clearly tired.
"I hope you said you're goodbye's, before seeing him leave...." Nathan said again, but before they had the chance the Car, along with the other's pulled away and drove off....to take them into Exile.
Although when they arrived at the Coast were the ship was, it had been only a few hour's during their trip and when they arrived they were surprised to find two men.
"Monroe?" Frame said confused as he stepped out of the Car to the see the very man he helped in America only week's before.
"The one and only, they said anyone could join...I believe I and my compatriot here, were the only two to come." Monroe said as he motioned to the young man next to him, he looked standard at best and had light brown hair....he almost looked like he, almost anyway.
"Frame....Meet Marshall Cominsky, Dylan Cominsky." Monroe motioned to the young man next to him, who only reached his hand out to shake Frame's who in return did shake it.
"A Pleasure." Frame said as they all looked at the ship that would carry them all into Exile.
"I must ask....Why?" Frame asked as they started to walk, but with the other's in the Guard.
"Well....despite it all I refuse to work for a King who had deceived us all, and has gotten his own Empire's civilian's killed....I prefer to go into Exile with a man who would rather do something about it, than follow a man who blinded us, and tricked us into killing Good men." Monroe stated as they continued walking....at least until they reached the ramp is when Frame stopped.
"And Him?" Frame pointed to Dylan who just continued up the Ramp with Monroe.
"Him? He could give less of a Fuck about the King....he's here because he fought alongside you at the Battle of the Coast, New York, Boston, and Washington." Monroe stated as he and the other man stood on the ship now, but when he finished he watched Frame shrug before walking up the ramp as well.
"Former....General of the Empire....now General of the god forsaken island their taking us too." Frame said in irony as the ship being too pull away, but he couldn't help but to ask himself.
Was it ever worth it to begin with?
Was it ever worth, fighting in the Revolt....a thought that was well to be considered....The greatest Strategic mind, betrayed once more....and now into Exile...
The World....nothing more than a bit of Conquest and control he supposed....Conquest. A word that was bitter even to himself now.
