Episode 15: Retreat to the Coast
Frame stared in silence at the road before him as he stood on the top of a Tank.
The battle of New York was a complete and utter Failure, but they were not defeated no....to be truly defeated they needed to be completley wiped out from America and that meant before they got to the coast to the evactuation ship's.
And now this he now knew who was leading these Rebel's against them, but clearly she was the only one capable of this and at first those year's ago he had thought she died...and seeing her leading a Army in New York....that just proved him wrong on her death.
Though now here they were his Combined Army of those who were stationed In New York and those who came to aid them from Pensylviana. However they had been picking up survivors of recent attack's and let them join them on their march to the coast....though it had been a week or two however since they left New York and it seemed like they had been on the March for day's.
The fact that the Confederacy Soldier's had been hounding them for that amount of time was not good either, but never the less they continued their course no matter the cost.
Frame had ordered his troop's to protect the rear of their retreating Army to make sure the Enemy could not get or kill them all, but the realization that the Enemy were not giving up was a clear sign to continue their march to the coast....or they would all be stuck in America and would be killed most likely.
He knew why the Enemy Soldier's would not stop chasing them however and that was because of her.....one look and she knew that when she saw him he had to die....he knew the demon to well to not anticipate her move's.
Though the march was getting to many of them their mind's were clear and their objective clear, though the men might have complained they knew that they had to keep moving other wise they would meet their doom and their death's to the enemy and possibly would never get to see their families or friend's again.
As for Frame he had stayed silent the entire trip from New York he barley said a word ever since he laid his eye's on her again, but everyone could tell the man was in deep thought especially when he simply ignored the fact that his tank had been bouncing and getting stuck in mud all the time.
Even though Gerald and his Scientists were working on the new Tank's and Technology they still were lacking behind on the Technology race against Europe, but the Grand Army was the only Army in the Military at the moment with the Newer Tech.....if only he wasn't so busy with that damn Airship.
"Life's Work my ass." Frame whispered to himself when he noticed the Tank had stopped yet again due to the mud. This constant stopping of the Tank by the mud was beginning to piss him off to his limit's, but he couldn't help it to only one to blame here was Gerald and that Airship he was so busy working on above all else.
"Someone get this damn Tank back and moving again!" Frame shouted out to the nearby Soldier's who simply saluted and nodded going to the aid of getting the Tank moving again.
Everyone knew Frame was not being his normal self and took that into heart as they tried to clear out the mud from under the Tank for what they believe was the fifth time.....today.
Frame went back to staring ahead of them as he put his hand on the top of the Tank, but he couldn't help to let his anger loose considering the situation they were in and he knew the men understood as well.
He had completely ignored the fact that the men trying to get the Tank out had slipped and fallen into the hole along with the Tank, but when they got up Mud and Dirt was all over there Uniform's and equipment. This was also due to the Tank which tried to get out with it's tread's when they got toward's it.
The Soldier's when they had recovered had finally begun to get to work by digging in the Mud to make it so that the Tank could have a way to get out, but sooner or later another Tank would have to help pull it out and then after they would have to make some kind of plank over the Hole for their Vehicles to get over.
"Sir at this rate it will take a few minute's until we can get the Tank out and moving again." A Lone Soldier who was helping in getting the Tank out spoke to Frame in a tone that sounded like he was tired, but who could blame him they had been on the march for day's and usually without a stop.
"Do what you can, but with the Enemy closing in on us we don't have long to get this line moving again." Frame looked behind his shoulder to show that he was clearly worried about the Enemy Soldier's following them.
"We'll work as best as we can sir." He Saluted with his muddy Glove on his hand and went back to work with the other's, but clearly he was tired and frustrated and no-one could blame him everyone here felt the same way.
However it didn't take very long until the Men were able to dig a way for the Tank to get moving, but they had no choice but to get another Tank to pull it out when it sunk more into the ground.
Though when the other Tank had pulled out Frame's tank it had made the Tank tip so that it went up, but that meant it mad Frame fall into the mud below them a few second's after the Tank was pulled out.
"Sir!!" Several Soldier's screamed out as they ran down into the hole to get him, but when they helped him up his uniform was completely covered in Mud, yet not to mention his hat which had fallen off his head and went straight into the mud.
"I'm fine.....I'm fine." Frame sighed as he made the Soldier's back away, but was clearly agitated as he wiped some of the mud off his glove's at least until a Soldier went to go fetch his hat.
"Should we stop and get you a new Uniform Sir?" One of the Soldier's offered Frame yet was met by Frame's usual stubbornness.
"No.....I've fought with mud in my boot's before, I can certainly do it again." He sighed again as the Soldier came back with his hat, but when Frame grabbed it he looked at it. The Hat was completely muddy and mud was inside the hat itself the once pure and stylish black, and blue Hat was now tainted by the mud.
"Get the line moving again.....and for god's sake double our time schedule." Frame ordered the troop's around him, but his only response was a few slight nod's before the Soldier's ran off and out of the hole while two other's stayed to help Frame out of the hole.
When the two Soldier's got Frame out of the hole he held his hat down so that the mud inside would pour out, which it did yet it wasn't completely clean of mud and he knew that, but his thought's were put away when he noticed several Soldier's carrying very large plank's before putting them over the hole clearly as a new "Fill up" for the Convoy.
Frame watched as the line moved again as Truck, Transport, and Tank moved over the Plank's and making it to the other side safely, but the only thing that made him shudder was when he put his hat on clearly feeling the wet mud still inside it.
"Sir another Tank is ready to take you if you wish too ride on it." A Lone Soldier had walked up to Frame and had given him the news, yet they didn't know if Frame wanted to ride another Tank after what happened, though he would deal with it either way....after all he was only a foot soldier two years ago.
"I'll take it, just get us out of here before the Enemy pin us." Frame looked at the Soldier as he spoke, but his only response was a slight nod like before yet instead the Soldier lead him to the Tank that had several men sitting on them.
Due to the long March already a lot of the Men had started to ride on the Tank's like Frame had been doing the entire time since they left New York, but the Tank's were soon going to be full of Troop's who might be exhausted or tired.....not to mention the fate of those who would have to walk if that happened.
As Frame approached the Tank several of the Soldier's moved so that he could climb up to the very top of the Tank were the main cannon rested, but as soon as Frame got up there a soldier had brought him a map and before they knew it the Line was on the move again in a furious attempt to get away from their pursuers.
"Sir we have been on the March for almost a week now, but are we sure we are near Ohio yet?" A Commander stood next to Frame on the Tank as they both stared at the map of America, but it was clear they had no idea where they were going as they had been marching for day's.
"I have no idea if we are even heading to the Coast, or if we're heading to Washington these road's have been confusing and might have turned us around more than a few time's." Frame stared at the map clearly concerned as the Commander continued to look behind them as if though the Enemy were right behind them.
"If we are in Ohio then there should be two base's still operational for the Military, one being a Military base, and the second would be a soul based Air craft facility." The Commander pointed to where the Base's would be if they were in Ohio and it looked like they were very far from each other.....thank god for that.
"Either will do....as long as they will give us Vehicles for our troop's and those Vehicles could improve the time it would take to get to San Francisco." Frame sighed as he looked at the location's of the Base's he didn't care what kind of Vehicles they would find just as long as they got to the city on time.
"Yes sir, but why did they choose San Francisco out of all place's?" Frame looked over his shoulder at the Commander as though he was almost utterly stupid and a moron as he looked to be.
"The only reason they chose San Francisco is because it's the only place the Evacuation fleet can amass in full force to get the people and military out, but especially in the Francisco Bay." Frame looked at the map again, but was still clearly frustrated as they had been on the same road for day's now....at least until he noticed the commander talking to someone on a communicator.
"General we have news, good, bad, and worse." The Commander put the communicator on hold as he spoke by pressing a button on the device which rested on his ear, but to Frame the term Bad, and then worse news was not any kind of news to him at all.
"Go ahead." Frame sighed heavily as he spoke while still looking at the map.
"Firstly for the good news, we have heard that Marshall Brandon is making good progress in defending Minsk.....the first attack was two day's ago, but now they are suffering from Artillery bombardment's which they quote "It seems Endless" or so I heard." The Command turned around to look at Frame once more, but could clearly see the stress in his eye's as he stared at the map still.
"As for the bad news the rear flank has fallen again." Frame listened to his report as he held onto the tank's hull now with his arm's and hand's supporting him.
"And the Worse news?" The Commander could tell he was close to losing his cool soon, but he couldn't blame him not in the situation they were in currently.
"I-I'm sorry to say that within three day's the Fleet will leave." The Commander spoke shakily as he looked at the man before him, the utter silence that was met second's later not only by Frame, but by the soldier's on the tank with them had shaken him completely.
"Then.....we are pressed for time.....and we are too far behind." Frame spoke under his breath quietly as he stared ahead of them, but deep down inside he was angry and confused for once...
"Then to the base we go....and pray we get there in time." Frame sighed again as he backed up from the map and turned around to stare behind them, but felt as if though he could hear the cries and screams of the men who were covering their rear the last time.
"Helicopter's, and planes will get us there in a few hour's, but by ground it will take us a day or two....tell the men commander and quick." Frame crossed his hand's behind his back as he spoke, but it was clear that the other man had left when he heard a large splash below him clearly when the man had jumped off the tank and had landed in the mud.
"The Rear Flank.....The Demon." Frame looked down at the tank's hull as he went into thought about what was happening around him. Even though he was considered one of, but if not one of the greatest General's alive at the moment even he could show stress from time to time.....he was human after all.
Frame being tired and very stressed out decided to sit down on where he had been standing which was only a feet from the Soldier's before him, but as he sat down he held his hand to his face clearly showing how stressed he was.
Though it wasn't a long trip before the line had stopped completely, but it had only angered and confused Frame as he shouted out and got up.
"Why the hell have we stopped aga-." Frame stopped what he was saying when he turned around to where he was staring toward's the front of the Tank, yet what he saw shocked and horrified him along with everyone else.
They had reached the Military base.....though it wasn't full of life anymore.
The Entire base was in flame's including several Tank's, Bunker's, Tower's, Two Barrack's, and the main Complex itself. That wasn't what was affecting them though....no what really hit them was they had found the previous Military personal.....but hanging from different locations.
The first thing Frame noticed by the time he had gotten off the tank and had begun to join the main group to investigate the Base was that many of the Soldier's were either holding their mouth's or were puking.
Though when they entered the base Frame had been called over by several Medic's to come over to a specific body they had been crowding around, but when Frame laid his eye's on him his eye's widened.
This deceased man was fairly old and had solid white hair, but as for his clothing he wore a blood red uniform with black eye light's around it.
"Sir.....it's General Tech..." Frame looked at the Medic who had spoken and then back at the Body, but the only thing that made him look back at the body and that was the condition it was in.
"By God his body has been....Mutilated." One of the Medic's spoke as he looked at the body, but by the time he did look at it he began to puke while the other's only watched covering their mouth's and noses because of the smell coming from it.
"This look's like it wasn't recent....though it is upsetting to see him like this....and being dead to be frank." Another Medic spoke as he continued to look at the Body, but by it's condition the enemy truly had no mercy and regret for their enemies.....by god the thought of this happening to them was what was getting to their mind's now.
"Gentlemen....there is nothing you can do for these men now....all we can do is continue on and pray we can get home." Frame spoke to the men assuring them and trying to get them to remain calm, but the situation they were in currently didn't look calm at all.
"Sir....You may want to come over here!" A Lone Soldier had called Frame over for some apparent reason, but willingly he did so mostly to get away from the medic's and the body.
"Take a look." One of the Soldier's pointed around the corner when Frame had approached them, but when Frame stepped around the corner and felt relief as he looked at the Vehicles infront of him.
"Very good find Gentlemen, load the men in the Truck's in two day's time we should be with the rest of our Force's." Frame looked back over his shoulder and ordered the men to do so, which they did as they went back to those who were recovering from the long walk here.
This was a good find indeed, but it would seem the Enemy were only here to kill the Base of it's staff rather than destroying everything here. Though this was a miracle at best for Frame and his men because without those Vehicles most of his men would either fall behind and be killed by the enemy or by dying of exhaustion.
And that was a worse way to die than any other.
