Forty-Three

In Kalheim marriage is a legal agreement. It is a document that ties two people together. It is a document. What's mine is yours, what's yours is mine.

In Kalheim divorce is a legal separation. It is the end of a legal agreement.

In Kalhiem, a marriage can be ended with a signature.

Very few of these things are the same for magi.

For us marriage has never been, and will never be a legal agreement. It is the act of tying your soul to the person, or people, you love.

We wear rings to show our love in this physical life. We alter our marks to show our love in whatever comes after.

Divorce is the separation of souls. It may sound painful, but it is likely the easiest part of divorce. If all parties agree that they do not want to be married anymore, they are not.

In some cases, one person wants to stay in the marriage for a malicious reason. In those cases, the Founders intervene.

Unfortunatly for everyone who was at lunch today, this is not one of those cases.

...
earlier that day

"I wonder if she's anything like Veya." Finnick leaned back in his chair.

"She's not." Caspian said with a mouthful of food.

I gave him a pointed look. He swallowed. "She's super nice."

Chena nodded. "Veya is the way she is because of her mother. She protected her sisters from that."

Cassius frowned. "Does anyone else thing it's strange that she never let us meet her sisters?"

Irina shrugged. "She never left Sifa, I don't think she avoided it."

"I was in Sifa with Javus one time, she actively hid her sisters from us." Finnick stabbed a piece of meat with his fork. "Then again, she may have just been avoiding Javus."

"What did Javus do?" Irina raised an eyebrow.

"He's a Quake." I shrugged.

"But wasn't her-" Finnick was cut by Javus.

He slammed his plate onto the table as he sat down.

"The fuck is up with you?" Caspian raised his eyebrows.

As if on queue, Elyse sat down on the bench beside him. When she realized she was sitting between Javus and Irina, she moved closer to Javus. She was afraid of Irina, but she didn't know why.

He shot her a glare but she didn't seem to notice.

Caspian looked between them. Javus shook his head. "Soldiers in Terra. They haven't done anything yet, they're just watching."

"I'll watch them. If something is going to happen we'll stop it before any major damage is done." Cassius attempted to reassure him.

Elyse shifted to cross her legs and accidentally touched Javus's shoulder with her own.

Javus dropped his fork. "Can I have an inch of fucking space?"

She stared at him, alarmed. "I- I'm sorry." Her voice was barely above a whisper.

I shot Javus a warning glare. He ignored it.

"Don't be sorry, move." Venom dripped from his words.

She scooted away from him until she was closer to Irina and stared at her plate.

"You're so damn clingy." He muttered.

I seemed to be the only one who noticed her shaking hands.

Chena stared at him, almost surprised. "Javus we understand that you're upset, but you can't take your anger out on her."

"Upset?" He laughed humorlessly. "My soul is tied to a woman who called me a monster a week ago. And she refuses to break that bond. Upset doesn't begin to cover it."

Elyse wrapped her arms around her torso. Tears start to form in her eyes.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Her thoughts broke my heart. I reached for her hand under the table. She pulled away from me.

"Javus. She is not that woman anymore, you know that." I kept my voice even as an attempt to calm him down.

"You're right. Now she's the wife I never wanted that refuses to leave."

A sob escaped Elyse's lips. Everyone looked at her.

She turned to Javus. "How do I undo it?" She sniffled. "What do I need to do?"

He looked down at his arms but the mark of unity still marked them. He looked up at me. "Shouldn't that be it?"

I looked at Elyse. "You just have to want it."

She stared at her hands for a second. Nothing happened. More tears started to form in her eyes. "Is there some sort of override? Can you undo it?"

"Elyse, if you don't actually want it, it won't work." Chena leaned forward. "Why would you want to overide it if you still want it."

"It's not fair." She whispered. "Please, there has to be another way to undo it."

I shook my head. "Elyse, we might be able to help if you tell us what's stopping you from fully wanting it."

Tears fell down her face. She looked at Javus. "I'm sorry. I didn't know what I was doing, I wouldn't have done it if I knew. I'm sorry. I just want you to be happy, but some part of me won't let this go. I'll keep trying. I'm sorry."

He stared at her, confused and speechless.

To be fair, we were all confused and speechless.

She stood up and cleared her throat. "I'm sorry for ruining lunch. If you find a way to override it, please come find me."

With that she walked away.

Javus was the first one to speak. "What the fuck just happened."

"You fucked up." Caspian half-smiled.

"I- how? We can all agree that wasn't one of his finest moments. But he kinda got what he wanted." Irina stared at him.

"Why do you even want a divorce? Like I get that she wasn't a great person before, but she's good now." Caspian leaned back in his chair. "If I was in your position, I would see it as a gift."

I stared at him. "You are disgusting."

"What? Feelings can develop." He shrugged.

Finnick nodded. "Have to agree with Casp. She is fine."

"And she thinks you're an angel." Cassius added. "It took her like five days to fall in love with you. You could try."

Irina slapped Cassius's shoulder. "She is not an object."

"She's also not a random girl we saw at a bar. She's his wife." Caspian shot her a look. "We're just saying he should give it a shot."

"Because she's pretty." Chena stared at him.

"Pretty is an understatement." Finnick sipped his water.

I threw my fork at him. "You are all horrible."

He held his hands up in surrender. "It's not like we're saying he should use her. We're just saying he should give it a shot."

"And she just happens to be an 11/10." Caspian added.

"Casp, don't you have a girlfriend?" Javus spoke up.

"Why is that important?"

"He wants you to keep your grimy paws off his wife." Cassius smiled.

Javus looked up at the sky. "What do I do? I can't fucking yell at her again."

"Well, not like that." Finnick smirked.

"Seduce her." Caspian offered. "She'll probably feel better after that."

"Worked with Veya." Cassius added.

I stared at them in horror. Chena and Irina were equally speechless.

"Can you three stop thinking with your dicks for a second?" Javus shook his head. "I need genuine advice."

Caspian opened his mouth but I spoke before he could. "For starters, apologize."

"Then seduce her?" Caspian looked between Irina, Chena, and me.

"No. Absolutly do not do that." Chena glared at him. "You just made her cry. You need to do something that will not fuck up her emotions."

"What do you want? Because if you're going to give it a chance, you need to approach it differently." Irina leaned forward on the table.

"I don't know." He looked at me. "How does she feel? I don't want to try anything if she's going to be ready to walk away tomorrow."

I smiled at him. "Aw, don't tell me you're afraid of getting your heart broken."

He glared at me.

I sighed. "She's in love with you. She developed a crush on you the moment she opened her eyes. Since she had no memories when she woke up, she clung to those feelings like a lifeline, which is why they developed so quickly. As of right now, the only thing she cares about is your happiness. So now she is in a difficult situation. Conciously, she wants to divorce you, because she wants you to be happy. But, she wants to divorce you because she loves you. So her subconsious is refusing to let your souls seperate."

"So she is not going anywhere anytime soon?" Somehow Javus looked hopeful and upset.

"I think Mari just said her feelings were literally tearing her apart."

"Caspian, I will knock you out." I threw my spoon at him.

He smiled at me. "Just thought I should clarify."

Javus nodded. "So apologize, and then what?"

"Make your intentions known, and make sure she's aware that it might not work." Irina almost looked bored.

"Establish boundries." Chena added. "Her feelings are stronger than yours. Let her know where the lines are."

He nodded again. "Would now be too early to go find her?"

Irina practically shoved him out of his seat.
