Forty-Nine
Veya
"What." Eres glared at Javus.
"Don't glare at me. I didn't want it to happen either." Javus held his hands up in surrender.
"Whatever." Eres turned to Mari. "You said she died?"
"Yeah. That's why she doesn't remember anything." Mari nodded slowly.
"Anything?" Eres stared at her.
"She knew her birthday and her name. That was it."
"And now she's a magi." Eres leaned back. "Can I see her?"
Mari and Javus shared a look.
"Are you sure you want to? I mean, she's not the Elyse you knew." Mari spoke softly.
Eres gave me a quick glance. "I'm not the Eres she knew anymore either. We were friends once, maybe now we can be friends again."
"Just friends though." I gave him a look.
Javus gave me a smile that made him look like he was on the brink of insanity. "Yeah, I don't think that's going to be a problem."
...
Elyse was sitting on the beach and playing cards with Chena.
Just looking at her made my heart sink. She was the definition of beauty.
Long, tan legs carelessly sprawled in front of her. Blond hair that looked almost golden in the sunlight. The breeze kept blowing it into her face, she didn't seem to care.
She laughed at something I didn't hear. Her laugh was the epitome of joy.
Javus said something I didn't catch. She looked up at him, a bright smile on her face. Her eyes were blue. Really blue. Like the sky.
She was on her feet almost instantly. She gave Javus an awkward side hug as if she was desperate and afraid to touch him.
She looked a little too pleased when he held onto her.
I stared at her. Eres knew every inch of this woman. Inside and out.
Eres slept with this woman regularly.
I glanced down at myself.
I'd never really felt insecure about my beauty. I never had time to.
Until this moment, I liked the way I looked. Hell, yesterday I might've called myself beautiful.
But today? I was nothing compared to her. I would never be anything compared to her.
I looked at the goddess in front of me. She was introducing herself to Eres.
She shook his hand, but she was still holding onto Javus.
She didn't love Eres. She might've never loved Eres.
But I didn't see a world where Eres would pick me over her. I wouldn't pick me over her.
Veya, I mean this in the best way possible, are you attracted to Elyse? Mari.
No. Probably.
No. No, I'm concerned for the well-being of my relationship.
Look at her, Mari. Caspian.
Don't lie, Vey. Irina.
Javus narrowed his eyes at me.
What the Hell were you thinking about? Javus.
She's fucked Eres like a thousand times. How am I supposed to compete with that?
Fuck him better, probably? Caspian.
Oh sorry, let me just-
I looked directly at Caspian, who was sitting a few feet away at a picnic table and dropped to my knees.
Javus stared at me with wide eyes. Caspian practically fell off the bench he was laughing so hard.
Eres and Elyse stopped their conversation to stare at me.
"Do I want to know?" Elyse looked at Javus.
"No. You do not." Javus looked at me, still horrified.
"Um, anyways." Elyse laughed awkwardly. "You're the crown prince, right?"
Eres nodded once as he helped me to my feet. "In the flesh."
Stop glaring. Javus.
I'm not glaring.
You're glaring. I can feel it over here. Caspian.
Sometimes her face just looks like that. Chena.
I don't know if I should be offended or if I should thank you.
"I just wondered if you would've known me, or anyone who knew me, or my family." She shrugged. "Or if I even have one."
Eres crossed his arms. "Do you remember your last name? I can't say I recognize your face, but I know the name." His chin tilted up slightly, one of his tells.
"Serties." She said with a little too much enthusiasm.
I glared at her.
Damn Chena, you're right she wasn't glaring before. Caspian.
Now knock it off. Javus.
No.
I glared at him.
Eres nudged me in the ribs.
"What?" I turned to him.
"Are you going to introduce yourself or are you and Javus going to just continue that staring contest?"
"Oh." I turned to Elyse. "My name is Veya Morningstar. I'm a Spirit. The Spirit of The Council, actually. I already know who you are, how you got here, and the whole marriage situation. I'm known for being a bitch, so don't expect me to be nice just because you have amnesia or whatever."
Elyse blinked at me. "I'm scared." She clasped her hand over her mouth as if she didn't mean to say that out loud.
"I mean, nice to meet you too." She glared at the ground, her face bright red.
Javus glared at me. "Don't worry, she doesn't bite."
"Usually," Eres murmured.
Elyse looked like she wanted to go crawl into a corner and die.
Good, that's how I felt every time I looked at her and remembered she had shared a bed with Eres for years.
Javus pulled her tighter into his side. "You owe me, you could try to be nice."
"Technically, Eres owes you. I wasn't about to die." I smiled at him.
"I saved him for you Veya. I couldn't care less about what happens to the crown prince."
"Wow, thanks." Eres stared at him.
"Anytime, your highness." Javus dipped his head slightly in a mock bow.
Elyse tilted her head to the side as if remembering something. I stared at her, not hearing the conversation around me.
She stared at Eres for a moment. I silently whispered a prayer to every god or goddess I'd ever heard of.
Elyse shook her head and looked down, frustrated.
I sighed in relief. She didn't remember.
At least, not yet.
