Chapter 54: Just The Two of Us
I knew this would happen.
Last week, my mother called me to ask about a viral video that grabbed her attention, due to the fact that one of the boys featured in it appeared to be her son. With all the commotion that happened last week, I didn't even think of texting my mom to tell her about the proposal video.
Between that video going viral, Carla being expelled, Skylar going to Texas in the middle of the week and the Harvest Ball approaching, I was caught in the middle of it all. Oh yeah, and let's not forget Jayden's mom coming to Ravenwood to investigate what happened and talk to me. Honestly, the whole thing was one huge clusterfuck.
But at least I managed to speak to her and clear the air, eventually earning her approval to be prospected by her son. That was important, especially because at that time, I did not have any other choice. Then Skylar's father surprised everybody with his approval of me.
Anyway, I FaceTimed her for a while after classes when she asked me all kinds of questions about Jayden, what really happened between us, Skylar and what was my answer to the proposal. After that, I texted her about other things, including the surprising decision by Alpha Stronghold.
Now that Seth and I are at odds with each other over Skylar, I feel like I need a different type of friend. One who could judge the situation with some impartiality. My mom is perfect for that task. She will always give it to me straight.
She and I have always been close to each other. I had friends in high school and still do, but there were no secrets from her. At least, nothing major. Some things are best kept as a mystery between mother and son. Anyway, now she is all caught up with what happened since then and is grilling Jayden like a CIA interrogator.
Poor Jay is sweating under her scrutiny right now.
It's Friday night in Colorado. I took Jayden home with me for the weekend because he needed to ask my mother's permission to prospect me. I mean, she needs to approve of him before we can move on with the contract negotiations.
This past week, Skylar has intensified his tactics of winning me over with small gestures that he does to woo me. He is very sneaky in the sense that he does not buy me lavish things like one could with his kind of money. Instead, he goes low on his gifts.
Though the flowers and chocolates were expensive, it's nothing any other Ravenwood student couldn't afford - except for me, of course, though I am obviously not the only scholarship student over there. We are ten percent of the student body, by state law.
Jayden and him have been feuding a lot lately, but so far it hasn't escalated to the point of physical aggression and I hope it never comes to this. By the end of this weekend, Jayden should have my mother's stamp of approval.
If he can survive the grilling from her, of course. Well, my love, you are the Alpha. Deal with it. Let the games begin! I mean, they have already begun...
"I know what Skylar wants with my son, Jayden. He has been very vocal about it from the moment I met him. What I don't know is why an Alpha of your caliber would wait a whole month before starting to fight for my son. Skylar did not even share a kiss with him and he flew back to his pack in the middle of the week just to ask his parents for approval of Jake. Where was your love all this time? Do you really love my son or you just don't want Skylar to win?" She demanded to know, raising an eyebrow in an accusatory stance.
My goodness, she doesn't sugarcoat it. Does she? I expected nothing less, of course.
"I haven't been idle for a month, ma'am. Trust me, I was devastated to be forced to break up with your son. He is the only boy from that academy that I wanted from the start. He was interested in me even regardless of what my pack was or whose grandson I was. He is a true gem. I was not in a good place after we broke up." Jayden replied, sounding heartbroken by the memory.
"Jayden, I imagine it wasn't an easy situation for you. But what worries me as a mother is what will happen once the two of you find the next hurdle. Are you going to break up with my son again or are you going to fight for him? Because I need a warrior for my son. A man who won't stop at anything to be with my son! I need him to be taken care of, no matter what. Can you promise me that?" Mom backed him against the wall right there in the living room of our home, even before we washed for dinner.
Sweat trickled down Jayden's head at the unexpected question as he faced my mother.
"Yes, ma'am. I promise you I will. I am sorry for not having fought for Jake like hell as soon as my mom told me the news. I should never have taken it. I should have defied her and I apologize for my mistake." He pledged himself, remorsefully.
"Calm down, kid. I am not saying you should have defied your mother. I will never advocate for parental disrespect or anything of the sort. But if you managed to get your mother in a room with my son after Skylar showed interest in him, why couldn't you do that before? That is my issue. I am not going to debate the merit of your mother's decision. She was misinformed by her father, and as a daddy's girl, I can relate to her. I would take my father's word on pretty much any matter over anybody else except for my mother." Mom declared, trying to de-escalate the situation.
"I am sorry, but until you can convince me of how committed you are to my son, I can't sign off on this contract. I have nothing against you personally, but I need my son to be partnered with a man who will not take 'no' for an answer. I will not let him get trapped in the same pitfall that I was, falling for an empty promise." She stated, triggered by my father's abandonment.
"I am deeply sorry that you had to experience that, ma'am, but I promise you I am in it for the long haul with Jake. I do not intend to leave him nor did I come here on a whim. Jake is the one for me, I am sure of it." Jay spoke, humbly but confidently.
"That remains to be seen, but for now you can drop your bag in my son's bedroom and wash up for dinner. I am sure you must be hungry after your trip." She told him, doubt dripping from her voice. Yeah, my mom is not going to be so easily sold on us. And I can't exactly say that I blame her.
I guided an astonished Jayden towards my room in the two-bedroom apartment where we dropped our bags. Then I directed him to the restroom where he could freshen up. Afterward, we sat down for dinner with my mom inside the kitchen.
Considering the grilling Jayden took right away, my mom kept the conversation light and made small talk with him about his family and background in Georgia. She also asked me about the Harvest Ball and if I had any Ravenwood gossip to spill.
Well, yeah. Always. Starting with the boy with a criminal record that nobody saw coming.
Jayden seemed more relaxed as the conversation flowed through dinner. Later, he offered to do the dishes but she said it was okay. He was a guest and could rest for the evening. I know my mom is still not convinced about him, but hopefully that will change soon.
We don't need to rush into anything now anyway. It's November and nobody expects contract negotiations to start before December, at the earliest. I am glad he is here though. We can talk and have privacy without having to disrupt Seth or ask for permission. It's just two consenting adults who will NOT have sex under any circumstances.
But there is other stuff that we can do... I missed being with him.
I rested my head on Jayden's bare chest as we watched Netflix in my bedroom. I was yet to watch the new season of Heartstopper and he's never even heard of the show. I was like... what?
That is like saying you have never heard of Harry Potter. Sacrilege.
"I'm sorry if my mom was hard on you. But I took our breakup really, really bad. And she noticed it whenever I returned here." I told Jayden with some remorse for his cold reception - not that Skylar was welcomed here with balloons and a party.
"You have nothing to be sorry about. She's your mother! It would be weird if she was all blasé about it. I understand her concerns, she wants to make sure I am not going to back out of our commitment later. I am not offended by her protectiveness of you." He assured me in a soothing tone.
"Great. I am sure you're going to win her over in no time." I encouraged him with a content grin.
I love being this close to Jayden, but for some reason, his scent is not as calming as Skylar's was to me. I don't know why.
Be that as it may, we still had some fun together, free to make out and explore our closeness. I slept like an angel tonight.
On Saturday, I took Jayden sightseeing just as I did Skylar when he was here. I didn't want him to complain about preference or jealousy. Jayden is my guy.
We walked around town, I took him to the Mall for some shopping, did everything one was supposed to do with a guest who was visiting Boulder for the first time except for mountain climbing.
Later that day, we went to a nice restaurant where we were served the best steak one could eat here in Boulder. Jayden was delighted to eat there as was I to have the pleasure of his company.
Jayden and I talked at length about our goals and his insecurities regarding our relationship, especially now that I've been approved as a potential partner for Skylar.
I did my best to squash any concerns he had regarding our relationship which has nothing to do with his roommate. As much as I appreciate Skylar's thoughtfulness, Jayden is the one for me.
It was good to have that kind of time and privacy to talk. Just the two of us. It made me appreciate our connection more intensely.
I love Jayden and I hope we can make it through.
Later that evening, we made sure to keep my mother company since we don't get that many Saturday nights together. Jayden understood that this weekend was all about her getting to know him properly.
We played cards, board games, and talked the night away in a carefree environment. Jayden was finally able to relax and bond with my mom. I absolutely loved every minute of our time together.
I am sure she'll soon see what I see in him. It's unmissable. Especially when it's just the two of us. He is so freaking adorable! *swoon*
