Chapter 6: Getting to know the team
(Y/N)'s P.O.V.
I stepped into the office before Connor, who closed the door behind us all. Hank sat down across from captain Fowler while the android and I stood a few feet away from him. Silently, the lieutenant listened to his superior.
"I've got ten new cases involving androids on my desk every day. We've always had isolated incidents, old ladies losing their android maid and that kind of crap... But now, we're getting reports of assaults and even homicides, like that guy last night... This isn't just CyberLife's problem anymore. It's now a criminal investigation and we've gotta deal with it before the shit hits the fan. I want you to investigate these cases and see if there's any link." The captain firmly looked at Hank, who seemed upset.
"Why me? Why do I gotta be the one to deal with this shit? I am the least qualified cop in the country to handle this case! I know jack shit about androids, Jeffrey! I can barely change the settings on my own phone..." The grey haired man replied, his frustration evident by the way he spoke.
"Everybody's overloaded. I think you're perfectly qualified for this type of investigation." Nevertheless, captain Fowler did not step back, sounding partly angered himself.
Hank roughly stood up and threw his hands in the air. "Bullshit! The truth is nobody wants to investigate these fuckin' androids and you left me holdin' the bag!"
I was impressed by how the captain just kept on talking. "CyberLife sent over this android to help with the investigation. It's a state-of-the-art prototype. On top of that, they even sent us detective (L/N) from another city, who they deeply count on. The android and (L/N) will both act as your partners."
Promptly, Hank pointed his index finger at his superior. "No fuckin' way! While I don't have a problem with actual people, I don't need a partner."
Shortly glancing at Connor he continued, "And certainly not this plastic prick!"
Captain Fowler's fury now turned more visible. "Hank, you are seriously starting to piss me off! You are a police lieutenant, you are supposed to do what I say and shut your goddamn mouth!"
Tempted by the man's words, Hank replied, "You know what my goddamn mouth has to say to you, huh?"
As a warning, the captain pointed his own finger towards Hank. "Ok, ok... I'll pretend like I didn't hear that, so I don't have to add any more pages to your disciplinary folder 'cause it already looks like a fuckin' novel! This conversation is over!"
Seemingly lost, Hank leaned his arms onto the captain's desk and argued, "Jeffrey, Jesus Christ! Why are you doin' this to me? You know how much I hate these fuckin' things. Why you doin' this to me?"
His superior sighed and moved his hands around in front of him, drawing the line. "Listen, I've had just about enough of your bitching. Either you do your job or you hand in your badge. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got work to do."
Disappointed, Hank exclaimed a groan and walked outside, harshly shutting the door.
Unsure of what to say, I stayed quiet, actually kind of intimidated by the man sitting behind his table.
"I'm very pleased to have joined the team. I can assure you I'll do my very best-" Connor started talking, surprising me with a positive approach, yet he was fastly stopped by the captain.
"Close the door on your way out."
Nodding his head, the android answered, "Have a nice day, Captain."
While Connor headed for the door, I commented, "Thank you for this opportunity."
My partner still kept the door open for me, hence I hurried through the exit.
Outside captain Fowler's office, the air already seemed much easier to breathe in. We both walked back to Hank's desk in silence, yet I felt more comfortable like that than having to face Hank's superior once more. Arriving next to Connor, I listened to him addressing the lieutenant.
"It's an honor to be working with you, Lieutenant. I'm sure together with detective (L/N), we'll make a great team."
A grin covered the androids face but it was easy to tell that it was imposed. Hank stayed quiet, his arms crossed, eyes focused on his screen.
"Now that we're partners, it would be great to get to know each other better." Connor kept talking, yet Hank did not react.
Feeling it was my place to speak up, I did as my mind told me. "I'm sorry that the captain forced this teamwork on you Hank. Well, to start this off, are there any desks Connor and I could use?"
A small smile laced my lips, as I tried to change the subject and make the situation less awkward.
"No one's using that one. Guess you gotta share it." He pointed to the one across from his own. I nodded, grabbed an unused chair and placed it next to the one the detective android sat down on.
I had to get somehow close to Connor in order to actually still sit at the table, hence my shoulder brushed his. While Hank now focused on his screen, my eyes met the android's brown ones, as I emitted a silent breath. Strangely, this vicinity caused a warmth to rise inside my chest, leaving a pleasant sentiment behind. Bashful, I averted my own eyes and tried to distract myself by staring at the table. Completely childish - I knew that, yet I could not help it. Being locked in CyberLife's facilities, I had only gotten closer to a few scientists that accompanied me during the years. This unfamiliar contact was overwhelming but compacent as well.
"You have a dog, right?" Connor asked Hank.
I perked my head up, taking interest in his new approach to try and get to know the lieutenant.
"How do you know that?" The grey haired man skeptically eyed the android, looking up from his screen.
"The dog hairs on your chair. I like dogs. What's your dog's name?"
Somehow the way Connor acted was too adorable to be true. While I was aware that he tried to get closer to Hank for the mission's sake, I believed to sense a slight curiosity emerging from himself too.
"What's it to you?" the lieutenant questioned and turned back to his work. To my surprise, he did offer an answer a second later. "Sumo, I call him Sumo."
This conversation seriously warmed my heart, hence I chuckled to myself, inadvertantly drawing my partner's attention to myself.
"Do you have a dog detective (L/N)?" Connor asked me the same thing but I shook my head, still partly covering my mouth with one hand.
"No, I do think they are cute though. I just never really owned enough money to take care of an animal." I stated, shrugging my shoulders.
Feeling that my sentence had ended on a quite sad note, I quickly added, "Oh, I would love to see a picture of Sumo one day! If you have one, will you show it to me?" I smiled at Hank, who squinted one eye at me.
"Sure."
Satisfied, I nodded, silence growing between us again.
That was, until Connor inquired something else. He faced the lieutenant another time. "Do you listen to Knights of the Black Death? I really like that music. It's...full of energy..."
Nonplussed by his words, I blankly stared at the android next to me. I could not image him to listen to such a band. Not in a million years. As if voicing my thoughts, Hank doubtingly asked, "You listen to Heavy Metal?"
Connor moved his head to the side, almost bumping into mine if I hadn't leaned back in my chair. "Well, I don't really listen to music, as such...but I'd like to."
Still unsure whether that was correct, I merely stayed quiet. "What kind of music do you enjoy?" The detective android once more turned to me, our faces only inches apart.
Did he really not have any information on me in his database? He seemed to know that much about Hank. Considering my question again, I bitterly smiled to myself, CyberLife popping up inside my head. In order for me to keep hiding the fact that I belonged to their organisation they must've deliberately left out that knowledge. What clever folks.
"Detective (L/N)?" Connor's voice tore me out of my thoughts.
"Ah, sorry. I assume I prefer (F/B)." I hastily answered. That music surely was to my liking. Especially since it was the only thing I was able to listen to back at CyberLife's facilities.
"That also is a fairly intriguing kind of music." Connor added, making me question once more whether he truly meant it.
For a few minutes, no one said anything, awkwardness surrounding us. "If you have any files on deviants, I'd like to take a look at them..." Connor suggested, directing his sentence at Hank another time.
"Terminal's on your desk. Knock yourself out."
My (E/C) colored orbs landed on the screen in front of us, as Connor was already reading through the files. "243 files... The first dates back nine months..." he mumbled to himself, while I soon found myself helpless, unable to keep up with his pace.
"It all started in Detroit... And quickly spread across the country..."
Trying my best, I followed his movements on the screen, focusing on the cases. I needed to keep proving CyberLife that there was no reason to rob me of my freedom again.
"An AX400 is reported to have murdered a man last night. That could be a good starting point for our investigation." Connor offered, looking at Hank, who was staring into the other direction, appearing bothered by the android. Out of a sudden, I noticed Connor standing up, moving past me onto the other side to eventually stand next to the lieutenant. Cautiously, I observed the situation, unsure of what to think.
"Uh, Jesus..." Hank utter underneath his breath and turned away from the detective android, staring at the tablet on his table.
"I understand you're facing personal issues, Lieutenant, but you need to move past them... and-"
I jerked when Hank annoyedly faced Connor, raising his hand. "Hey! Don't talk to me like you know me. I'm not your friend and I don't need your advice, okay? Why don't you act more like (Y/N) and just shut up?"
Confused whether me keeping quiet was a good thing or not, I tilted my head, uncomfortable with the situaion anyhow. Connor placed one hand on Hank's desk and his other on the man's back. Slowly, he kneeled down onto the lieutenants level and continued, "I've been assigned this mission, Lieutenant. I didn't come here to wait until you feel like working."
Abruptly, Hank got up, grabbed Connor by his collar and pressed him against the glass wall next to them. I widened my eyes, immediately standing up myself.
"Listen, asshole. If it was up to me, I'd throw the lot of you in a dumpster and set a match to it. So, stop pissing me off... or things are gonna get nasty."
Unable to keep watching this, I ran around the table and tore both men apart. "I know this team was forcefully pushed together but threatening each other doesn't solve anything. Both of you should stop doing that!"
I felt anger well up inside me, mad at myself for having simply kept quiet and mad at both my partners for acting even more childish than me.
Hank stared at me, disapproval in his eyes, as Connor merely wore that neutral expression. Sighing to myself, I was glad to see Chris walking over to us.
"Lieutenant, detective (L/N)...uh...sorry to disturb you. I have some information on the AX400 that killed the guy last night... It's been sighted in the Ravendale district."
Hank kept his gaze locked on the android, while answering, "I'm on it."
Strangely, I sensed an ounce of determination in his voice. If he somehow was resolute to work and my partners wouldn't get in each others way like that once more, I was satisfied.
As Hank walked away, Connor straightened his clothes and fixed his tie. I was still kind of angry at him for pressuring Hank like that, hence I merely glanced at him, feeling disappointed.
"Let's go," I said, turning and walking away in order to follow the lieutenant.
