Chapter 16: Are you a deviant?

(Y/N)'s P.O.V.

November 9th, 2038
11:17 am

Hank was outside of his car, making a call, hence Connor and I remained inside. The android had his eyes closed, causing me to wonder if he was sending report to Cyberlife again. I shifted in my seat, having to think of the events yesterday. I had been unduly afraid to lose Connor. With a sad expression on my face, I once more peeked at him, making sure he was still there. When he had run into the open field it had felt as if my heart had simply stopped beating. An ache pierced through my head, hence I held it with one hand. I didn't want to think of it, however, it always returned. Haunted me. I couldn't image living without Connor anymore. It hadn't been long since we had met but I felt so utterly connected to him, it was ridiculous.

"Are you all right (Y/N)?" Connor looked back at me, worry in his eyes. I solely stared at him, the images of him being shot not leaving my mind. I didn't want to concern him with it, yet I couldn't stop.

"Do you not value your life even a bit?" I quietly asked, unable to suppress my anguish. He tilted his head, probably not understanding what I meant. However, I was too marred to explain anything.

"I was so scared that I might lose you. Why do you always put yourself in harm's way, Connor?" Feeling that tears threatened to spill, I took a deep breath and before the android was able to answer, I had already left the car.

Fortunately, Hank just got off his call, giving me an actual reason to escape this conversation any further. Connor stepped outside as well, glancing at me with a distressed expression faintly covering his face. I instead addressed Hank.

"Is everything ok?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Chris was on patrol last night. He was attacked by a bunch of deviants... He said he was saved by Markus himself..."

I widened my eyes, hearing the news. Despised my bewilderment, relief washed over me, knowing that Chris hadn't been attacked and deviants had acted friendly.

"Is Chris ok?" Connor moved forward.

Hank nodded, responding, "Yeah, he's in shock but...he's alive... What the hell..."

The lieutenant started leading the way, thus I hastily followed him, not able to be alone with Connor at the moment.

"Kamski left CyberLife ten years ago... Why did you wanna meet him?" The android inquired from behind.

"This guy created the first android to pass the Turing test. And he's the founder of CyberLife. Anybody can tell us about deviants, it's him..." Hank answered, reaching the door.

I stopped next to him and so did Connor, as he rang the bell. For a while, there was no answer, whereas Hank was about to repeat his prior action. Suddenly though, the door was opened by a young, blonde android, wearing a blue and rather elegant dress. She solely stared at us, no reaction on her face.

"Hi... Uh... I'm, er, Lieutenant Hank Anderson, Detroit Police Department. I'm here to see Mr. Elijah Kamski." Hank stuttered a bit, causing me to squint one eye at the female.

As if someone had exchanged her, she now sweetly smiled at us, moving aside and gesturing with one arm towards the entrance. "Please, come in."

Her voice was like honey, fairly soothing. We stepped inside as soon as Hank had answered, "Okay."

She stepped next to us, folding her hands together in front of her body, which appeared to be a common pose for androids, as I had noted.

"I'll let Elijah know you're here. But please, make yourself comfortable."

After she had left, Hank looked around, eventually sitting down on a chair. A large picture of a man dressed in a suit immediately caught my eye, hence I approached it. Perhaps that was Kamski?

"Nice girl..." Hank claimed, causing me to bite my lip. I considered her quite strange but of course, a man like Hank would think differently. Sighing to myself, I tilted my head, inspecting the image in front of me. Connor's voice startled me a little. "You're right...she's really pretty..."

An ounce of jealousy welled up inside of me, causing me to pout.

"Not goin' to comment on that (Y/N)?" Hank smirked at me, unfortunately having seen my reaction.

I huffed and turned away from him. "I don't know what you are talking about."

Walking over to a different picture, I once again recognized Kamski but there was another person as well. Someone I had never seen before. She was a dark skinned woman with a rather solemn expression. Somehow, she scared me.

"Nice place... Guess androids haven't been a bad thing for everybody..." Hank ascertained, which I did have to agree on. This house undoubtedly was equipped with expensive objects.

Turning to the hazel brown haired man, Hank continued. "So, you're about to meet your maker, Connor. How does it feel?"

Connor thought about it for a second before responding, "Kamski is one of the great geniuses of the 21st century. It'll be interesting to meet him in person."

I slightly smiled to myself, sensing genuine interest emerging from his voice. Connor now moved towards me, whereas I averted my gaze and stepped away. Hank meanwhile commented, "Sometimes I wish I could meet my creator face to face...I'd have a couple of things I'd wanna tell him... "

I completely understood what he meant. If my father hadn't killed himself in prison due to his madness, I would've liked to talk to him too.

I watched as Connor scanned the picture on the wall, muttering a name. "Amanda..." Did he know that frightening woman?

The female android entered the room again, calling out to us. "Elijah will see you now."

Hank got up, took the lead, with me and Connor following behind. The first thing I noticed upon arriving in the second room was an indoor pool filled with a red liquid. Wine perhaps? What an absurd idea.

Rolling my eyes, I heard Hank speaking, "Mister Kamski?"

My gaze landed on two other women, who looked exactly like the one that had let us in, only with different clothes. Seeing how Elijah Kamski seemed to enjoy watching them in revealing bathsuits, I frowned. It reminded me of Eden Club, just a bit more... Private.

"Just a moment, please."

The man known as Kamski swam towards the other end of the pool. We surrounded it, walking towards a large window, which replaced a wall. Admittedly, the view was wonderful. I noticed the android in the blue dress collect a black gown from another room, walking towards the man that just stepped out of the red liquid. She finished dressing him, making me squint my eyes. What was he, six years old? Couldn't he do that himself?

Kamski approached the large window, tugging at his black hair, which was put up in a man bun. Turning around, he faced our team.

"I'm Lieutenant Anderson and this is detective (Y/LN). This is Connor."

Hank pointed to each of us, his expression neutral. Somehow I got the feeling that he felt uncomfortable in the presence of the unfamiliar man as well. Kamski eyed me with curiosity, making me want to gag. I didn't know why but I disliked that man. Then, he faced Hank again.

"What can I do for you, Lieutenant?"

My partner did not waste a second. "Sir, we're investigating deviants. I know you left CyberLife years ago but, I was hoping you'd be able to tell us something we don't know..."

Kamski stared at him for a minute, seriousness in his eyes. Subsequently, he cocked his head back. "Deviants... Fascinating, aren't they? Perfect beings with infinite intelligence, and now they have free will..."

He motioned over to the blonde android next to him. "Machines are so superior to us, confrontation was inevitable... Humanity's greatest achievement threatens to be its downfall. Isn't it ironic?"

Kamski shortly smiled until Connor used the chance to speak. "We need to understand how androids become deviants. Do you know anything that could help us?"

The man glanced at me and then again at my partner. "All ideas are viruses that spread like epidemics... Is the desire to be free a contagious disease?"

Hank instantly talked back, "Listen, I didn't come here to talk philosophy. The machines you created may be planning a revolution. Either you can tell us something that'll be helpful, or we will be on our way."

Kamski did not really listen to Hank but rather stared at Connor, making me even more wary. "What about you, Connor? Whose side are you on?"

Before he could get too close to the android next to me, I protectively stood in front of Connor. Amused at my actions, Kamski lightly laughed. "Detective (L/N), if you were not a human, I'd say you would make a wonderful android. Just image having an almost immortal body. Wouldn't that be great?"

I gritted my teeth, trying my best to control myself. "As if you would ever know," I retorted, sounding as sharp as I had intended to. I had to deal with these oh so "wonderful" limbs all day.

This man surely would not get us anywhere. He kept grinning, maing me feel sick.

"Back to my question: Connor, where do you think you are in between of all of this?"

The android gently gripped my shoulder, softly shoving me back. I glanced at him, surprised. "It's not about me, Mr. Kamski. All I want is to solve this case." His voice was firm, just like his piercing gaze.

"Well, that's what you're programmed to say... but you..." To my displeasure, Kamski stepped even closer towards Connor until he was barely a foot away.

"What do you really want?"

For a second, Connor's gaze landed on me, something deep within his eyes. Before I could even react, he started talking, visibly conflicted.

"What I want is not important."

The other man merely stared at him. Over his shoulder, he called, "Chloe?"

The female android approached him, as he stepped away from Connor, making me sigh due to relief.

"I'm sure you're familiar with the Turing test. Mere formality, simple question of algorithms and computing capacity." Kamski grabbed the android's shoulders and held her in front of him, looking at us. He then stepped next to the female, continuing, "What interests me is whether machines are capable of empathy. I call it 'the Kamski test', it's very simple, you'll see..."

He intensely gazed at the female android. "Magnificent, isn't it? One of the first intelligent models developed by CyberLife."

Using his hand, he carrassed her cheek, making me feel sick once again. "Young and beautiful forever. A flower that will never wither..."

Turning to us, he proceeded. "But what is it really? A piece of plastic imitating a human? Or a living being... With a soul..."

The man let his back face us again, as he opened a drawer and pulling something out, causing me to feel anxious. He then turned around, lifting his hands, a gun in one of them. I blinked a few times as I noticed Connor slightly stepping in front of me. Kamski once again grinned, approaching him and softly pushing Chloe onto the floor.

"It's up to you to answer that fascinating question, Connor." He forcefully put the weapon into Connor's hand. As I wanted to protest, Kamski grabbed my wrist and dragged me a foot away.

"(Y/N)!" Connor's eyes worriedly landed on me, yet the black haired man immediately let me go.

"She just shouldn't interfere."

He inched closer to Connor again, moving the android's arm up so he was aiming the gun at Chloe's head. "Destroy this machine and I'll tell you all I know. Or spare it, if you feel it's alive, but you'll leave here without having learnt anything from me."

Kamski surrounded Connor, ending up next to him.

"Okay, I think we're done here. Come on, Connor. Let's go. Sorry to get you outta your pool." Hank interrupted, already about to leave, yet our partner did not move. Connor's LED flickered yellow, as he was obviously troubled.

"What's more important to you, Connor? Your investigation, or the life of this android? Decide who you are. An obedient machine... Or a living being endowed with free will..."

I clenched my fists, speaking up, "Don't listen to him Connor. We don't need the information that desperately."

Kamski put a hand onto the android's shoulder. "Pull the trigger -"

Hank and I shouted at the same time, "Connor!"

I saw my partner slightly averting his gaze from Kamski.

"-and I'll tell you what you wanna know." The black haired man finished his sentence.

"Connor, you're more than a machine. You don't need to listen to him!" I exclaimed, getting Connor to look at me. There was helplessness in his eyes, causing my heart to constringe. As his LED blinked red, he handed the gun over to Kamski, who accepted it from him.

"Fascinating... CyberLife's last chance to save humanity... Is itself a deviant..."

The LED turned to yellow again, as Connor hesitated. "I'm...I'm not a deviant..." Kamski helped Chloe up again and then sent her away.

"You preferred to spare a machine rather than accomplish your mission. You saw a living being in this android. You showed empathy."

"A war is coming...you'll have to choose your side... Will you betray your own people or stand up against your creators? What could be worse than having to choose between two evils and possibly losing someone you treasure?" Kamski's gaze went over to me, as he said those words.

Unable to just stand there and watch him, I marched towards Connor, gently gripping his hand and dragging him away. Hank was right next to us. Shooting a glare at the black haired man, I hissed "You tested Connor on empathy, yet I do not even see you showing any of it. He is much more human than you will ever be."

Turning on my heels, I softly pulled Connor behind me. As we were about to leave the room, Kamski added, "By the way... I always leave an emergency exit in my programs... You never know..."

Shaking my head, I continued walking, tightly gripping Connor's hand, who appeared to squeeze it back.

Once we arrived outside, I tentatively let go of my partner's hand, still walking in front of him.

"Why didn't you shoot?" Hank asked, turning around. I looked at him, wanting to know the same deep on the inside. We both faced Connor, who appeared troubled to explain himself.

"I just saw that girl's eyes...and I couldn't, that's all..."

I lowered my gaze, knowing he was very well aware of the reason himself. He just kept denying it.

"You're always saying you would do anything to accomplish your mission. That was our chance to learn something, and you let it go..."

I gasped, turning to Hank now. "I think that's enough, don't-"

I was interrupted by the lieutenant. "(Y/N) I can see what's going on with you but stop trying to constantly protect him."

I wanted to protest but Connor was faster than me. "It's all right (Y/N)." Shooting me a short glance, he then faced Hank, visibly upset.

"Yeah, I know what I should've done! I told you I couldn't. I'm sorry, okay?"

Hank stared at him for a second and then genuinely smiled at Connor. I had never seen him directing such an expression at the android. "Maybe you did the right thing."

The grey-haired man walked around Connor and headed for his car. Using the chance to speak, I inched closer to Connor. "I believe you definitely did the right thing. Like I already explained, emotions are nothing bad. I am seriously happy that you didn't shoot back then. I always knew that you were as good as any other human. You deserve to have your own life." I mildly smiled at Connor, grasping his hand and carressing it with my thumb.

"I wasn't programmed to feel this way..." He declared, glancing at our hands.

Chuckling, I lifted his hand and covered it with both of my own, still smiling at him. "That doesn't mean you're not allowed to perceive such things."

Before Connor could react, Hank called out to us from afar. "Are you two comin'?"

I sighed, slightly disappointed that he had ruined the moment. Lowering Connor's hand, I squeezed it once more and then strolled towards the lieutenant. Sensing Connor behind me, I felt contented, to have him by my side. I was proud of him for having proven the world that he was worth as much as any human.
