Chapter 12: A lost lover
(Y/N)'s P.O.V.
I moved one hand underneath my chin, following the lieutenant. Stepping aside, I traced every possible path the android could've taken with my eyes. If she couldn't leave, as Connor had disclosed, she surely wouldn't have headed for the main entrance.
"Excuse me, (Y/N)?"
I blinked a few times before turning around to spot Connor addressing me. He slightly shifted his weight, hence I tilted my head, confused why he seemed bothered by something.
"What's wrong?" I gave him a tiny smile.
"I noticed your distress inside the room when the android shut down and somehow I cannot forget that. Are you all right?"
I felt a certain warmth spread around my heart, as I grasped a strand of my hair as a distraction. "Yes, I'm completely fine. Thanks for... Worrying."
I nervously chuckled and Connor soon appeared much more comfortable. Did he really fret over such a trivial thing? Knowing that he cared, I was genuinely delighted.
My partner now nodded and distanced himself from me, which didn't bother me though. I was busy trying to focus on the case while enjoying the current sensation calming me. I took a deep breath and set Connor's worry aside with a faint grin, walking over to Hank, who was talking to the manager.
"You ever had any trouble with androids before?"
The unfamiliar man shook his head, responding, "No way! Well... Once... We lost a model 2-3 months back, bah... same model... Just vanished, we never found out what happened."
Hank sensed my presence and shortly introduced me. "That's my partner, detective (L/N)."
The manager sweetly smiled at me, causing me to wonder if this really was an appropriate situation to act like that.
"Hello." I simply greeted him, not keen on conversing with this man for too long.
He turned his focus to Hank again, due to the question being directed at him. "You probably don't have any CCTV in here, huh?"
The grey-haired man examined his surroundings.
"No way... I mean... This is what people appreciate about Eden Club...discretion. They can come and go without a trace."
I squinted one eye, guessing it was a way to increase their success. Of course no one would want to be seen walking into such a club.
"Excuse me, (Y/N). Can you come here a second?"
I moved my head to see Connor approaching me. Shortly glancing at Hank, he nodded and we both followed our partner.
"Found something?" Hank inquired, whereas Connor answered, "Maybe..."
We arrived in front of an android, locked in one of these glass pods. Looking at me once again, the detective android asked, "Can you rent this Traci?"
I blankly stared at him, nonplussed by that question.
"For fuck's sake, Connor, we got better things to do..." Hank exclaimed but Connor stayed serious.
"Please! Just trust me (Y/N)." His hazel brown eyes pierced through mine and who was I kidding, I had faith in Connor anyway. Sighing, I chose the shortest amount of time and certified my input.
"Hello. A 30 minute session costs $29.99. Please confirm your purchase."
I put my right hand on the fingerprint scanner and muttered, " I wonder what people will think of me now, seeing my expense account..."
Once more, the robotic voice of the computer appeared. "Purchase confirmed. Eden Club wishes you a pleasant experience." The glass moved aside as the Traci stepped outside.
The woman seductively smiled at me, making me want to gag. I hated having to support this club in any way.
"Delighted to meet you. Follow me, I'll take you to your room." She extended her hand and waited for me to accept it, yet I simply stared at Connor.
"So, do you plan on telling me what you had in mind?" I asked, seriously curious.
My partner approached the female android and grabbed her arm, his hand going white. When he closed his eyes, I knew exactly what he did. Meanwhile Hank muttered "Holy shit, Connor... What the hell are you doin'?"
After a few moments, Connor turned around, facing Hank and me. "It saw something."
The grey-haired man stepped forward, asking, "What are you talkin' about? Saw, what?"
I was about to give him an answer, intending to clarify what the detective android had done, yet Connor himself stopped me. "The deviant leave the room... A blue-haired Traci. Club policy is to wipe the androids' memory every two hours. We only have a few minutes if we wanna find another witness!"
I eagerly nodded, about to leave when the Traci I had rented gently grabbed my arm. "Uhhh..."
Looking around, I still saw Hank standing a few feet away, confusion evident on his face. Like that he would need some time to process what had happened anyway.
"He will take care of you." I pointed towards Hank. The woman let me go and marched over to the grey-haired man, who stared at me.
"What the fuck (Y/N)? I don't even know what to do with that thing!"
I apologetically smiled and jogged over to Connor, who was waiting for me. We both left Hank behind, seeing as I did not know what else to do to get rid of that Traci.
"Tell it you changed your mind!" Connor yelled back at Hank, as we moved over to the next android. In the background, I heard Hank stuttering.
"Uhh... Sorry, honey, changed my mind! Nothing personal, you're... a lovely girl... I just, uh... You know... I'm with him and her and... I mean, not with them like that... I'm not that... That's not what I... You, um... Wow... I just..."
"Let's try this one." Connor grabbed the arm of the female android we had first seen after entering Eden Club.
I patiently waited, perhaps staring a little too intensely at my partner. When he opened his eyes again, he already started walking, me following him.
"It saw the Traci walking further into the back."
I shortly glanced at Connor, responding, "All right, which one do you want to try next?"
Suddenly, Connor grabbed my wrist, hence I gasped. He dragged me over to a dark skinned male android in the back of the main room.
"Please rent this one (Y/N)."
I was still baffled by his sudden action and merely nodded, retrieving my arm while putting my right hand over the fingerprint scanner. The door opened and Connor hastily grabbed the man's arm.
"It walked into the red room!" He exclaimed and started walking. At the same time Hank caught up with us.
"Damn it (Y/N), you'll regret leavin' me back there." The grey haired man hissed, as I insecurely smiled.
"Sorry Hank but that was the fastest thing I could think of."
The lieutenant huffed, still seeming upset. Connor stopped next to a brown haired male android, which was close to where we came from. He peered at me, awaiting my cooperation. I hurried over, confirming the purchase. Once more, my partner grabbed the machine's arm and we waited for a second.
Opening his eyes again, Connor nodded towards us, quickly moving forward. I shrugged my shoulders as Hank questioningly flashed me a look. We trailed behind Connor, who seemed extremely tense, making me worry. How much more time did we have?
The android stopped once he entered a blue room and stared at the glass right next to him. I walked up to a black-haired female and pressed my hand against the wall. As soon as the glass slid to the side, Connor grabbed the woman's limb. Shortly afterwards, he turned around and headed for an unoccupied room.
"What the hell..?" Hank mumbled, as I also tilted my head. Did she really disappear into there? Connor quickly opened it and before either Hank or I could stop him, he stood inside the room.
Barely a moment later, he left again, a disappointed expression covering his face. Taking a look around, he surely debated which android to connect to next.
"How about the janitor?" I pointed towards a man, who was sweeping the floor. Connor nodded, approached the man and touched his shoulder.
"I know where it went! Follow me!" My partner twirled around and neared a private staff entrance.
"Fucking-A. This is crazy..." Hank blurted out.
As soon as we entered the narrow hallway behind the door, Hank called out to Connor and me, who were in front of him. "Wait! I'll take it from here."
We both stepped back, letting the lieutenant take the lead. While he drew his gun, I did the same. Carefully, Hank opened the door and entered a warehouse. With his weapon in front of him, the grey-haired man walked down a few stairs, scanning the area. I quietly followed him, walking to the right side and therefore into the opposite direction Hank was heading for.
"Shit... We're too late..." He loudly exclaimed and then ran off towards an opened exit. I widened my eyes, my gaze following him. Not ready to give up, I conscientiously inspected a few turned off androids standing next to me.
"Christ, look at them... They get used till they break, then they get tossed out..." I heard Hank frustratingly shouting from the other side.
Connor walked into the middle of the warehouse, staring at a few other machines. I now decided to take a look at the exit, which Hank had spotted a little while earlier. As I stared outside, I once more overheard Hank talking to himself.
"People are fucking insane... They don't want relationships anymore, everybody just gets an android... They cook what you want, they screw when you want, you don't have to worry about how they feel... Next thing you know, we're gonna be extinct, because everybody would rather buy a piece of plastic than love another human being... Beats me..."
He wasn't exactly wrong with such a statement. Yet the part about androids not having their own feelings was something I would never agree on.
"Come on! We're leaving."
I perked my head up, glancing at the lieutenant, who had already retired to the hallway we originally proceeded through. Firmly, I pressed my lips onto each other. There had to be something here! I kept staring outside, until a few noises reached my ears. Confused, I turned around to see Connor pressed against a wall by a brown-haired female android and Hank screaming, "DON'T MOVE!"
I jerked, inhaling some air. As fast as possible, I ran towards Connor, while he threw the Traci over a large blue box. Vaulting it, the ground was swept underneath his feet by the woman. As she hit him, I raised my gun but hesitated to shoot, afraid of accidentally hitting my partner.
Deciding to use simple combat skills, I sprinted towards the unkown android and tackled her to the ground, making her roll off Connor. She raised one hand and quickly brought it down but I blocked it, while moving my left arm up to shove her off me. Unfortunately, she predicted my move and tightly gripped my wrist, trying to squeeze it. To her misfortune, that was exactly the wrong arm for such an idea.
Suddenly, the woman was pushed off me, as I saw Connor entering my vision. I hastily rolled to the side and out of the way of my partner and the other android. Rapidly, I stood up and was about to confront her when I saw the brown-haired female pick up a screwdriver and kick Connor to the side, making him lose his balance.
I froze for a second, my mouth going completely dry. With quivering lips and shaking legs, I dashed towards the two, putting myself in front of Connor and using my left hand to stop the screwdriver from piercing through my partner's skin. The impact of the weapon made me cringe, however, fortunately I had used my better arm. With one fierce kick, I thrusted the android back until she fell out of the exit, which surprisingly was right behind her. At the same time, I witnessed Hank getting pushed over and the blue haired Traci running outside.
My mind spun, as blood dripped down my hand. Out of concern, I ignored the criminals for a second and turned around to check on Connor, however, he had already ran past me towards the two women. The blue haired one noticed him before he was able to reach them and managed to avoid Connor's attack, shoving him aside. I started running towards my partner but halted when I saw the two females joining their hands before sprinting into the direction of the large fence.
I held my breath as Hank yelled, "QUICK! THEY'RE GETTING AWAY!"
In front of me, I spotted Connor getting up and chasing the women. Coming back to my senses, I rushed after him.
The two women were about to climb the fence when the detective android grabbed the blue-haired one and tore her away. Instantly, the other one jumped onto Connor, yet he managed to shake her off. I got closer when the hazel-brown haired man fought the blue-haired Traci and the second woman grabbed a pole. Forgetting about my gun, I used my own body to jab her aside, falling onto the cold ground together with her.
As she got up, I suddenly saw Connor pressing her against the wall to hold her off. Afterwards, the blue-haired woman dove towards us, hence I quickly jumped to my feet and grabbed her arms with my right hand, as the left one was still pierced through by the screwdriver.
Unfortunately that wasn't enough to keep the android at bay, whereas she easily shoved me aside onto the floor. Out of the corner of my eye, I witnessed her and the second woman thrusting Connor into the wall. He managed to elbow one android but failed to kick the other one, stumbling backwards with the blue-haired woman.
I got up just in time to prevent the brown-haired machine to hit Connor with a trash can, however, I was driven backwards by her force nonetheless. Misplacing my right foot, I tumbled over Connor's body, landing a few feet away while sending him back as well. Weakly looking up from the ground, I noticed my partner's LED brightly flicker yellow as he raised the gun I apparantly had lost during the fall. He aimed at the brown haired Traci in front of him, making my blood turn to ice. I stared at him, the whole world turning black.
"Don't..." I quietly whispered feeling all strength leaving me.
As my body violently shook, I saw Connor lowering the gun and being kicked into the face the next second. The detective android fell onto me, causing me to grunt. Hearing me, he hastily moved to the side, his eyes meeting mine and eventually seeing the fear in my (E/C)-colored iris. As his LED still blinked yellow, he raised one hand to gently touch my shoulder. It was as if he had forgotten about our surroundings as soon as he had seen me.
"When that man broke the other Traci... I knew I was next..."
The voice of a woman tore us out of our trance, whereas we both fastly stood up, Connor supporting my body with one hand around my back in the process. The blue-haired female stood right in front of us, her eyes filled with anxiety.
"I was so scared... I begged him to stop, but he wouldn't... And so I put my hands around his throat, and I squeezed...until he stopped moving... I didn't mean to kill him... I just wanted to stay alive..." She explained, as the other woman inched closer.
"Get back to the one I love."
As soon as she said those words, the two females linked their hands once more.
"I wanted her to hold me in her arms again... make me forget about the humans...their smell of sweat and their dirty words..."
I sensed Hank walking up behind us.
"Come on, let's go." The brown-haired Traci said to her lover, hence both shot one more glance in our direction.
"I think you are close to finding out about that yourself..." The blue-haired one whispered at either Connor or me, I was unsure of that. Then, the women ran towards the fence, climbing it up again.
Connor still tightly held my waist, sending an irritated gaze at Hank, who was next to us.
"It's probably better this way..."
Connor's LED was still tainted yellow, as he now stared at me, parting his lips.
"You are hurt. Please let me see that." His voice was filled with worry, however, I shakily stumbled out of his arms and lifted my right hand with a smile.
"I'm completely all right."
I couldn't let him see the blood falling off my other hand. While Hank now peered at me, appearing concerned as well, Connor walked towards me.
"I can see that you are lying (Y/N)."
I didn't know where else to go, still hiding my left arm behind my back. Before I was able to react, Connor gently grabbed it and pulled it towards him.
As soon as his eyes met my palm, he slightly widened his eyes. More of my blood dripped down the screwdriver and onto the white ground.
"Shit, it's blue..." I heard Hank mutter, as I felt perspiration roll down my forehead.
I had been exposed.
