The First Fight

They had only been dating for two months at this point. Two months that both had found to be amazing. Hayden was out on a walk with Connor in the park when she froze.

"What's wrong?" Connor asked worriedly.

"It's James and Cass." She whispered. He followed her gaze to see two people walking down the other side of the road.

"Your friends? We should go say hello." Connor tried to guide her across the street but she pulled him back.

"No. Let's just go into this store, I needed something from here anyway." She then pulled them into a art supply shop.

"Need something from here?" Connor raised his eyebrows as she pulled them to the beads.

"One of my bracelets broke and I lost the piece that fell off." She then proceeded to actually look for a certain looking bead.

He still watched her trying to decide if she was lying or not.

Once she found the bead she made it a point to have them look around the rest of the store.

Why didn't they go to see her friends?

——

When the two of them entered his and Hanks house Connor turned to Hayden.

"Something wrong?" Hayden asked concerned.

"Why did you not want to see your friends? Did they do something to you?" He wanted to make sure that her friends were treating her right.

"They haven't done anything. I just didn't want to see them." She said dismissively.

"Hayden-" He tried again but she cut him off.

"I just didn't want to introduce you to them, that would have taken time and I needed that bead for my bracelet." She said and Connor just looked even more confused.

"We had plenty of time." He said standing in front of her.

"I just didn't want to go through the trouble today alright."

"But I wanted to meet your friends." Connor said sadly.

"Well I didn't want you to meet my friends alright!" She raised her voice.

"Why?!" He asked as if the idea were absurd.

"Because I don't want them to see-" She cut herself off.

"What? Are you embarrassed to be seen with me?" Connor asked, his voice become stern.

Hayden avoided his eyes, and even though she remained silent, that told him everything.

"You're embarrassed to be seen with me." He said quietly.

The two were quiet for a moment. "Is it because I'm an android?"

She remained silent again. "You know. To my understanding dating is to see if you want to spend the rest of your life with the other. But if you don't want to be seen with me, why would you spend the rest for your life with me?"

Hayden looked up at Connor with teary eyes. "That's not-"

"And I'm not sure I want to spend the rest of mine with someone who pulls me into a store, you have never been into before, just to avoid possible judgement from people that are supposed to never judge you." Connor said his own eyes become teary.

"Connor it wasn't like that." Her voice wavered.

"What was it like then? Those two are two of your closest friends. Why not tell them about me?" He asked his voice becoming angry.

"I-" She trailed off, she had no words.

"You shouldn't be embarrassed to be seen with me." He yelled at her. "And if you are going to be embarrassed then maybe we shouldn't be seeing each other."

He struggled to get the sentence out. Hayden looked at him with wide eyes.

"Connor-"

"I should mean more that people that don't matters opinion." He seethed.

Hayden looked down at the ground.

"You should go. Sarah's shift starts soon and you need to watch Oliver." He said and turned his head away.

She left without another word because he was right.

He had every right to react the way he did. She was the one who didn't want to introduce him to her friends, just because she was afraid of their opinions.

She walked away towards her house, but missed Hanks car turn onto the road from behind her.

Hank watched her walk away and walked towards the door.

He opened it slowly to see Connor sitting in one of the kitchen chairs, his head in his hands.

Uh oh.

Connor looked up angrily for a second but his face softened when he saw it was Hank.

Hanks frown deepened when he saw the heartbreak on his face. He had tears streaming down his face, something Hank had only seen once, just after the revolution when they had met up at Chicken Feed. But those were tears of relief, these were sad tears, very sad tears.

"What happened?" He asked.

"She didn't want me to meet her friends because she was embarrassed I'm an android." He said quietly and felt more tears run down his face.

Hank hugged Connor and patted his hair.

"Come on. Let's get you some ice cream." Hank said dragging him out the door.

"Ice cream? Why?" Connor asked wiping away the tears.

"Ice cream is what people eat after a fight." He said and started the car as Connor got into the passengers seat.

——

"Hayden you can't sit on the couch eating ice cream any more. It's been two days and you've done nothing." Sarah said watching her sister.

"He broke up with me. He said himself he didn't want to be with someone who didn't want to be seen with him." Hayden retorted her eyes tearing up.

"He has a point. What you need to do it go to his house, and apologize. Because you want to be with him right?" Sarah gave her a look.

"Yeah." Hayden said quietly.

"You really like this one right?"

"Yes." She said again.

"Then grow a pair and talk to him." Hayden glared at her sister but she had a point.

——

"Hey Connor how was your weekend?" Reed asked and noticed, a little too late, Hank shaking his head.

"My weekend was quite boring, how was your?" Connor said with an obvious sadness in his voice.

"Mine was boring too." Reed looked at Hank and Hank just shook his head.

Connor was incredibly focused that day. Connor got up at noon to leave but froze.

He slowly sat back down and just went back to work. Hank watched him with worried eyes and went into the break room.

Gavin followed. "What's up with the tin-man?"

"Him and his girl got into a serious fight. He broke it off." Hank said quietly.

"What why? He likes her a lot. Doesn't he?" Reed looked back over to Connor to see him staring at his screen, doing nothing.

"He's head over heels for the girl. She's the one that is embarrassed to be seen dating an android." Gavin's jaw dropped.

"She said that to him."

"Dragged him into a random store when she saw two of her friends. He's pretty beaten up about it. You know first break up." Hank said remembering his first break up.

"Poor guy." Gavin looked back at Connors desk to see Connor still staring at the screen.

——

Connor was in his living room with Hank on his side. "Connor I'm bored."

Connor looked over to see Hank staring at the ceiling.

He opened his mouth to suggest a movie but was cut off by the door. Connor moved to get it but Hank stood.

"I got it. You pick something." He said handing Connor the remote.

When Hank opened the door he was shocked to see Hayden at the door. "Is Connor here?"

The channel flicking came to a short stop as Connor heard Hayden's voice.

"Yeah He is. I think I'm gonna go to the store. And just fucking wander." He went into his car leaving Hayden at the door way.

Connor stood and walked up to Hayden.

"Hayden." He greeted.

Hayden looked into his eyes and started crying. "I'm so sorry. You were right. I shouldn't be embarrassed to be seen with you because your an android. My friends opinions don't matter. You matter. Because Connor I-" She stopped and took a breath.

"I love you Connor." She said and looked into his eyes pleading.

"You love me?" He asked the question before he could stop his mouth.

"I really do. You are one of the best things to happen to me. You make me smile and laugh and I can't lose you. Connor I can't lose you knowing that it was over something so stupid." She felt a sob bubbling in her throat.

Connor stared at her for a moment before becoming teary himself. "I love you too."

He hugged her and she let out a shaky laugh.

"I promise, we can go meet my friends when ever you want. And there is no way I will be embarrassed." She said and Connor kissed the side of her head.

"Better not."

——

The next day Connor walked into work much happier. Hank walked in behind him, happy to see the similar skip in Connors step.

Gavin looked at Hank confused. Hank took out his phone and sent Gavin a text.

"Their back together." Gavin smiled.

Good for him.
