Christmas Gifts

Hayden stood watching the door of the coffee shop she worked at.

Connor would be here any moment and this was her last chance to give him his Christmas gift before she went to New York to spend Christmas with her parents.

She looked down at the small box in her hands.

What I he hates it?

What if he's offended I got him a Christmas gift?

Just then Connor walks in just like he did everyday. "Morning my love."

"Morning Connor." When he reached her the two shared a quick kiss over the counter.

"I have something for you." Hayden said and held the box out in front of her.

He took the box and inspected it. "Why?"

"I know you don't believe in god and I mean I don't really either but I grew up in a Christian house hold and I grew up with Christmas and I like getting things for my friends and family so I got you a Christmas gift." Hayden could feel her face get redder as she rambled.

"For me?" He said pointing to himself.

"Of course. You are my favorite person After Oliver of course." She said with a giggle.

"Of course." He said smiling back. Hayden watched Connor expectingly. Connors eyes widened.

"You want me to open it now?" Connor asked finally realizing.

Hayden nodded rocking back and forth on her toes.

"Alright." He said and looked down at the box, wrapped in paper with different colored dots in lines. Each line a new color.

He slowly opened it and could see Hayden practically jumping in excitement. The wrapping paper was off, leaving a wooden box. He slowly opened the box, smiling at Hayden as he did so.

He looked down at the open box and his jaw dropped. A coin a little bigger than a quarter.

That's not what made his jaw drop. Oh no it was the engraving. In the center was a Cyberlife triangle.

Above it was "RK800"

And underneath was "Connor"

Connor could only stare. "Turn it over."

He picked it up to see on the back was a message.

"Love you Connor!"

Connor looked up from the coin and let out a breathy laugh. "I love it."

"You do!?" Hayden asked relieved.

"Its a coin, with my name on it!" He said happily. The his face softened. "Thank you."

Hayden ran from behind the counter and hugged him. "You're welcome."

"I have to get back to the precinct. But I'll see you later alright?" He said giving her a kiss on the cheek, grabbing the coffee and leaving a five.

"Connor wait!" He stopped at the door. "I'm doing a short shift today, Sarah's picking me up at noon. We're going to our parents house for Christmas."

"Oh." Connor visibly deflated. "Well come here."

The two walked up to each other. Connor with his one free hand piled her close and kissed her. After a moment he let her go.

"Have an amazing trip," he kissed her cheek. "a merry Christmas," he kissed the other. "and be safe." He finished kissing her nose.

"I will. Bye Connor. I love you." She said hugging him.

"Love you too." He said and hugged her back. "Now I really have to go. I'm already a little late."

"Alright. Bye." She said sadly.

"I'll call you later, alright?" Connor asked. Hayden nodded as she walked back over to the counter. "Definitely."

——

Hank was watching Connor fiddle with his coin, smiling. "What's got you in such a happy mood?"

"Hayden gave me a Christmas present." He said giving Hank the coin.

"Wow, that's a good gift. But I think you'll like mine more." Hank joked handing it back to Connor.

"You've gotten me a gift as well?" Connor questioned in shock.

"Of course I did. Why the fuck wouldn't I?" Hank held his hands out as if the idea was absurd.

"You didn't last year." He thought back to the year prior, just after the revolution.

"Well, Yeah. We all had a lot going on so I figured we would just take it easier." Hank explained.

"When someone gets you a gift is it common to get them something in return?" Connor wondered and Hank nodded.

He had some ideas on what to get Hank, but what to get Hayden.

He looked up at the clock to see it was 11:54.

"Can we start our lunch break a little early today?" Connor asked already getting out of his seat.

"Sure but, What's got you in a rush?" Hank asked watching Connor throw on his jacket.

"Hayden's leaving for New York in 5 minuets and I want to see her off." Connor yelled behind him as he ran out.

"Where the hell is he going?" Folwer asked Hank watching Connor run.

"On his lunch break." Hank said with a smirk.

"Why is he running?"

"Young love." Was all Hank could say, because really that's all it was.

——

Hayden walked out of the Cafes bathroom in a T-shirt and jeans and waited for her sister.

She took out her phone and debated calling Connor. She shook her head and placed it in her pocket once more.

She watched the road in the direction she knew her sister was going to come from. Behind her she could hear someone running. She just continued watching for her sister, not caring enough to turn around.

The running man stopped behind her and a relived voice sighed out, "Hayden."

Hayden turned around to see Connor. She hugged him. "What are you doing here? Your lunch hasn't even started yet."

"So I left five minutes early. I'll go back five minutes early. Besides I won't have a reason to get coffee." Connor said as their foreheads touch.

"I'm gonna miss you." She said softly and smiled at him.

"Me too."

She started to laugh. "This is silly, I'm going to be back the day after Christmas, it's only four days."

"Still four days without you." He said and gave her forehead a kiss and pulled her into a hug again.

They stood in silence for the next three minutes. Sarah pulled up to see the two and smiled.

"Alright lover girl, we gotta go!" She called out the open window.

"Noooo!" She moaned into Connors shirt.

"Do you want to be that last to show up? Because mom will definitely have something to say about that." Sarah warned.

Hayden pulled away from the hug. "Bye Connor. I love you."

"Love you too."

"You know I think I'm gettin déjà vu." She said and both laughed.

"Four days. I'll see you in four days." Hayden said walking to the car. "And I'll call you tomorrow during your lunch break alright!"

"Absolutely." He said and she got into the passenger seat. "Bye." He waved an watched as the car drove off.

When he got to Chicken Feed Hank watched him carefully.

"You alright kid?" He asked and Connor looked at him.

"Yeah. I just feel bad, I didn't think to get her a present." He admitted.

"Well, still got three days till Christmas." Hank said taking another bite of his burger. Connor reached over and grabbed a fry.

"That's true."

——

Connor laid on his and Hanks couch. "What should I get her?"

"How long you two been dating for?" Hank asked from his chair in the kitchen.

"Around 7 months."

"Damn, that's long." Hank whistled

"Is it?" Connor asked sitting up.

"For a first relationship." He said and Connor nodded.

"Well, what should I do?" He almost begged Hank to give him an answer.

"I don't know. Think of something she said she wanted. Get her that." Hank said and went back to doing whatever he was doing on the computer.

Connor suddenly sat up. "I GOT IT!"

Hank jumped and watches Connor ran out the door, "I'll be back."

Hank shook his head.

——

Christmas Day. Connor got up early and made Hank a special breakfast. It was around 7 and normally he would let Hank sleep in but he had a log drive ahead of him.

"Hank get up!" He called from the kitchen.

"It is 7:06! What the fuck am I doing up?!" Hank asked but stopped at when he saw the kitchen.

"I wanted to see you open your president before I leave. So come on. I'm leaving at 7:30 whether you open it or not." He said placing a plate of homemade waffles on the table, with sausage and eggs on the side.

His mouth watered at the smell of the food. "Fine, only because you made me food."

Connor also placed a bottle on the table. A bottle of whiskey.

"I'm not saying drink it now, please drink it at night but here." Connor said and pushed it towards Hank.

The front said "The Black Lamb" a brand he liked. He looked up at Connor.

"It's from 1943." Hanks jaw dropped.

"How the fuck did you get your hands on this?!" Hank picked up the bottle and looked for something saying it was newer.

"I have my ways." Conner sent him a wink. "Now eat."

"No wait, I have to get yours." Hank slowly got up and walked into his room and grabbed the papers.

"What's this?" Connor asked looking at the top paper.

A birth certificate. He had heard of some androids getting them so they could have things like social security numbers and last names.

He looked at the name and his eyes widened. "Connor Anderson"

He then felt a card fall, his police ID. It said the same.

Connor felt a smile reach his face. "I'm an Anderson."

"You've been an Anderson kid." Hank said smiling at Connors face.

Connor stood and hugged Hank. Hank patted his back.

"Now let me eat." Hank said and sat back down, continuing to eat. "This is good."

"Thanks." Connor mumbled, to focused on the papers in front of him.

"It's a shame you we won't be together for the rest of the day." Hank said far too dramatic for it to be real sadness, almost as if he were implying something.

"Yeah, but I really want to give Hayden her gift." Connor said grabbing a sausage from his plate.

"If your gonna keep stealing my food, just get your own!" Hank complained.

"How long of a drive is it?" Hank asked.

"Around 9 And half hours." He said and Hank almost spit out his orange juice.

"Damn. You're gonna get there at like 6 tonight."

"I know." Connor agreed confused as to why he was shocked.

"Food can't believe I'm asking this. Do you want me to come with you?" Hank asked and Connor smiled.

"You don't have too. But I would enjoy the company."

"Yeah yeah. Merry Christmas Connor." He said and put for waffle in his mouth.

"Merry Christmas."

——

Hayden looked at the time, 5:57. They had just finished dinner and were getting dinner ready.

"Are you sure your okay Hayde? You seem sad?" Her father asked while he washed dishes next to her.

"I'm sure dad. Just miss people back home." She said and placed the apple pie on the table.

"She misses her boyfriend." Sarah teased as she walked by. Hayden turned and glared at her.

"You have a boyfriend? How long have you two been dating?" Her mother asked and Hayden mentally readied herself.

"Around 6/7 months." She said nonchalant and kept moving the deserts to the table.

"Seven months!" Her mother cried. "It's been seven months and we haven't even heard of this guy. What's wrong with him?"

"Nothing is wrong with Connor." Hayden sneered through gritted teeth.

"Then why haven't you told us about 'Connor'?" Her mother exaggerated his name.

"I don't want to talk about this now." Hayden tries to dismiss the whole discussion but her mother was out for blood.

"Don't dismiss this conversation. This is serious. What's wrong with him?" Her mother asked raising her voice.

"Like I said, there is nothing wrong with Connor." She said strongly.

Her mother looked at Sarah who only smiled. "Connors a good one."

Oliver, who had walked in to see what the commotion was, heard Connors name and lit up. "I like Connor. He's really cool and smart and has this cool light on his head."

Hayden froze, as did her mother. "An Android. Your dating an ANDROID?!"

"Yes I am. And?" She asked having enough of her mother.

Her mother stared at her then sighed. "First the purple hair, then moving out to Detroit with Sarah and now your dating an android."

"There is one, nothing wrong with me dating an android. You know why? Because he is sweet, and funny, and smart, and better then all my past boyfriends combined and I love him. And two, I like my hair." She was practically seething at her mother.

"It is an android, it doesn't love you. You are wasting your time." Her mother said.

"That isn't true. I know Connor loves me." She looked at her father who looked conflicted.

"What did he get you for Christmas?" Her mother asked.

"Is that going to decide how much he loves me?" Hayden scoffed.

"Answer the question."

She looked at the floor. "He's an android, He doesn't believe in god, he doesn't celebrate. He got me nothing."

"Nothing. Oh yes it sounds like he loves you very much." She joked.

Sarah stood in front of her sister. "You haven't seen them. The other day when I was picking her up from work, he was there. Just holding her in the street. And for a moment he refuse to let her go. And on their first date the two were together wandering around Detroit for over 12 hours. She didn't come home until three that morning. But she had the biggest smile on her face."

"It's just pretending. It is just trying to act human, it doesn't love you." Her mother said her voice raising.

There was a knock at the door. Both her mother and Hayden were in a stand off. Both seeing who would dare say anything next.

"I guess I'll go get the door." Sarah said walking to the door.

Her mother opened her mouth but Sarah cut her off. "Hayden, come to the door!"

She walked out of the kitchen towards the door, she turned away from her mother and stopped.

"Connor!" She yelled and ran to him.

"It's only been two days." He joked as he picked her up in a hug.

"Two miserable long days with my mother." She whispered and kissed him as he chuckled.

Her parents watched. Her father smiling at the boy. He saw the smile on both of their faces. No one could make that up. Not even a machine.

Her mother however was disgusted. It was an android, how could her daughter be so blind?

Hayden heard something behind Connor and looked over his shoulder. "Hi Hank."

"Hayden." He gave a small wave.

"What are you doing here?" She turned back to Connor.

"Well, I got you a present, and it's customary to share gifts on Christmas, is it not?" He half jokes half double checks.

She smiled. "Yes it is, but you didn't have to get me anything."

"But I wanted to." He said handing her a square box.

It was much bigger than the coin box. The size of one of those pop figure boxes that were out when she was little. She opened the box and gasped.

"Where did you find this?" She asked looking up.

"The Antique Shop in the square by your house." He said and she nodded still staring at the box. She pulled out a really old toy duck and Sarah gasped.

"Like the one at grandmas." Sarah whispered and Hayden nodded. Her eyes filled with tears.

Her grandmother had died four years prior in a house fire, taking everything she owned with her.

This was a duck that her grandmother had in her toy box, that she played with when she was little. It was her favorite toy in that box.

She placed the duck back in the box and handed it to Sarah. Turning back to Connor, she gave him a watery smile.

"Your crying. You don't like it. I'm sorry I though you wo-" He was cut off by her kiss.

When she pulled apart she held their foreheads together. "I love it so much. Thank you."

After a moment she pulled away from his hug and moved aside.

"Sorry. Come on guys." They both walked in a little and stopped not really knowing what to do.

"Mom, dad, this is Connor and his work partner Hank Anderson." She introduced.

Her mother continued to look at the two of them in disgust. Her father however walked up and held out his hand to Connor. "Nice to meet you son."

"It is a pleasure to meet you as well, Mr. Richmond." He said and shook Hayden's father hand.

"Call me Nick." He corrected and moved to Hank.

"Hank Anderson." He introduced himself.

"Nick Richmond." The two shook hands.

"You two work together?" He asked.

"Yes. I'm a lieutenant for the DPD and Connor is a detective." Hank explained.

The two older men started to talk and Connor looked back at Hayden.

"Oh. Look at this. I'm officially an Anderson." He pulled out his work ID and showed it to her.

"That's so sweet." She said and the two started to talk too.

Her mother just watched in horror. Her daughter was dating an android.

Sarah walked up to her mother and whispered. "Get over it. He's nice and look at how happy she is."

Her mother watched as Oliver was talking to Connor about what he had gotten for Christmas. He seemed good with kids. Making a lot of faces and noosed to show he was listening. And Hayden was watching Connor.

Her mother could practically hear the thoughts of Hayden having a child with this android.

If her daughter could look that happy, then she could be civil. At least until her daughter came to her senses and saw reality.

I know it's not Christmas but who cares.
