twenty-two

The two entered the house. Amara was sitting on the couch as she looked at the two. "Where did you two go? On a coffee date?" she scoffed, crossing her arms as she watched the TV. Darc blinked at her, "I went out to get a cup, he got pushed by protestors," she pointed to Nines with her thumb as she closed the door.

"Oh my god, are you kidding me?" the red-haired girl got off the couch, running to Nines, "Are you okay?" she cupped the android's face, "What did they do to you?"

"They just pushed him around," Darc muttered, hanging the keys beside the door.

"Darcy was able to stop the crowd before any external damage was made," he said.

"Oh, thank god you're okay," Amara hugged the android.

"Yeah, I'm okay, thanks for asking," Darc mumbled as she walked to her room. She took off her coat and threw it aside. She walked up to the mirror, staring at her reflection for a minute. "What am I doing here?" she whispered to herself, narrowing her eyes. Her eyes went to the bandages on her arms.

Slowly, she unwrapped the white strips from her arms. Burn marks on her arms. They were a few shades darker than her skin. It was a horrible day for her. The car accident was on the papers. There were a few more burns on her ankles and torso. Her family was on a road trip, she was only 12-years-old. The engine overheated, the car started to malfunction.

The next minute, Darcy was in her seat with flames all around her. She called out her mother and father, expecting them to answer. She did the same for her siblings. Only her older sister answered, the others remained silent. Her clothes burning, her skin ached painfully from heat from the flames. Black hot oil on her arms, ankles and outfit that burned through her skin, permanently damaging her nerves. Her sister's hand scrambling to take the seat belt off her.

It was an unforgettable sight.

Darc snapped out of her daydream, shaking her head gently. The car accident made her want to be an engineer, so no family would have to go through the same thing she did. The memory was etched into her mind, the scar was a reminder of what happened and what she had to go through. Darcy straightened her posture as her eyes met with a pair of greys.

She turned around, looking at Nines, "How long were you standing there?" she asked, eyeing the android. "For five minutes," he answered simply.  She scratched the back of her head, "Sorry," she laughed nervously. Nines's eyes went to her arm, "I've noticed those a few days ago," he said, "You were involved in a car accident, correct?"

"Yeah," she said softly, running a finger on one of the scar, "Yeah, I was." She gave the skin a pinch, knowing she wasn't going to feel it. She stared at the pigmented skin, biting her lip.

She lifted her head up and clapped her hand, "Alexa, play some music," she said. The majestic and soft starting of the song made Darc laugh out loud. "I love this song," she said, "Thanks, Alexa," she smiled, biting on her nail.

"Slow Dancing in the Dark," Nines said, "By Joji."

"Yup," she walked up to him, "Tell me, can you dance?"

"I am not programmed to," he answered.

Darc kicked the door closed, "Oh, come on," she said, placing her hands on his shoulders, "Not even slow dancing? Everyone knows how to dance," she smiled a little, "I'm pretty sure Kamski had slipped in a few things in there."

She took his hands and moved to the centre of the room, "It's okay if you don't wanna, I'm just gonna enjoy this anyway," she moved side-to-side a little, following the music's rhythm. She hummed the song lyrics, her smile getting wide every minute, "This song is depressing, I know," she said.

Nines watched the girl curiously. He moved a little closer to her, his right hand went onto her back while he held on her left hand, holding it at the side. "See? You're getting it," she said, making eye contact with him. As the chorus starts, the two danced with each other. Nines's footing was surprisingly accurate.

"You're pretty good at leading," she chuckled a little, her cheeks slowly getting warmer. She hummed the song as the two danced. His eyes never leaving hers as he leads the dance. Her smile made something inside him snapped. He felt slightly different all of a sudden.

As the second chorus was about to play, he placed both of his hands on her hips and lifted her up a little and spun. "Holy shit--," she muttered softly as she laughed right after. He placed her on the ground and continued dancing. "You surprise me sometimes, Nines," she said, "You're pretty good at this."

She twirled around, one hand above her head held by Nines. She giggled as she spun. The two held each other again and continued dancing to the song as it was about to finish. She spun out of his arms and pulled back in, her back against his chest, her eyes closed. He rested his head on her shoulder. The two swayed side-to-side as the song ends.

Darc slowly opened her eyes, blinking for a second. She turned her head to the side, "I didn't really expect you to be that good," she said, laughing a little, "Wow," she sighed, letting go of Nines's hands. She turned to him and patted his shoulders

Nines's LED flashed yellow, his eyes twitching. He looked over at Darc, "Let me guess," she said, "You have to go?" she walked over to her bed and sat down, "Go ahead," she gestured to the door, "I'll be here to help you afterwards," she smiled, crossing her legs.

He nodded at her before leaving the room.
