Chapter 46
"Where are we going?" I giggled.
"Bedroom," Billy grasped my hand and pulled me along.
"Billy, we have a whole barn full of people waiting for us!" I challenged.
"They can wait another fifteen minutes," as he spoke, he pulled me to his chest and dipped his face into the tangle of my hair and veil until I felt his lip on the delicate skin of my neck.
"Fifteen minutes, when have we ever..."
"So tawdry Mrs. Collins. I'm not sure if a married woman should speak in such a manner," he teased.
"Mrs. Collins," I mused to myself as I let my head fall to his shoulder. My lips kissed up and down his neck as he carried me up the stairs. "Did you write me a song?"
"Oh Lil, I write you all the songs. Today is a special day," his voice was soaring like a bird on a warm spring day.
"What did you do?" I skeptically asked as he pushed open the studio door.
He set me down as I eagerly looked around the bedroom.
"Billy!" I exclaimed. There were so many things set up special in the room, but my eyes clung to the wall. "When did you do this?" I moved closer to the list he had scrawled on the wall what felt like a lifetime ago. Now instead of random scribbles, it was framed scribbles.
"I didn't have the heart to paint over it," he sheepishly admitted.
"I love it," I smiled as I turned back to him. It was then I noticed, hanging from my closet door, a simple white slip dress.
"Tess thought you might like something more comfortable for the reception," he admitted.
"Tess is a genius. Can you unzip me?"
"Till death do us part," he murmured as he unzipped my dress.
"I can get used to these vows," I smiled as I slipped into my closet and pulled off my dress. I had forgotten how heavy it was until I was no longer holding it up. The slip dress felt like I was wearing nothing at all. I sighed as I looked down at the heels I had kicked off. I decided to give my feet a few more minutes of peace and kicked them aside.
"Hey," I shyly said as I stepped into Billy's view.
"Mmhmm, maybe we will need more than fifteen minutes."
"I told you," I teased. "What do we have here?" I asked as I approached a small table set for two.
"Well, everyone always says that the bride and groom never get to eat at their wedding, and that seems terrible, so I made a contingency plan." He pulled out a chair for me and lifted the lid off my plate to reveal a simple white bread sandwich.
"Peanut butter and Fluff! You are the man of my dreams!" I took a ravenous bite of my sandwich.
"It's the real stuff from New England too. I had your mother bring a jar with her just for the occasion."
"We have a whole jar!"
"Well, like with most things, you and Viv seem to share the same opinion of Fluff. So, it could be dwindling."
"I will gladly share my Fluff with Viv." I smiled before tucking into another bite.
"And just to ensure we both slip into a diabetic coma before we have to endure Unchained Melody," as he spoke, he pulled two glass bottles of Coke from a cooler beneath the table.
"I love you," I smiled as he set the bottles down.
"I'd hope so; you're now entitled to half my stuff." He took a bite of his sandwich before adding, "this is so good."
"It's a fluffernutter. They're amazing at the beach. They get so gooey and good!"
We enjoyed the rest of our first meal as husband and wife in silence, mainly because the peanut butter and marshmallow fluff glued our mouths shut.
As our time alone dwindled, I let out a sigh as I looked at my heels.
"Oh, right, one more contribution. This one from Jackson," Billy added as he pulled a box from beneath the bed.
I opened it to find a pair of white Chuck Taylor sneakers. "I love that kid," I exclaimed as I pulled them from the box while Billy looked on with a pleased grin.
"Unfortunately, we have to head back down." Billy held up his phone with a screen full of text messages from Timmy. "We have to text him before we go through the curtain. He has an entry song for us."
"He has taken this role of MC very seriously," I smiled.
"He sure has." Billy stretched his hand out to me.
Billy dipped his lips to mine while we waited for Tim's entry selection to start. As Love and Marriage started, Billy pulled away.
"We should have seen this coming," he smiled.
"Hey, it's not a bad choice," I shrugged.
We reentered the barn to find they had replaced the ceremony seating with tables and a dance floor. Billy grasped my hand as we made the rounds to everyone. It was light and fun, being so small we could visit each table.
"Fluffernutters," Viv smiled. "Best invention ever. It's a dessert sandwich."
"Right!" I agreed.
"Hey," I tousled Jackson's hair. "Thanks for the sneakers," I smiled.
"I didn't want you to start the tour with a broken leg," he shrugged with a playful smile.
"Time for the dances!" Timmy announced. "Mr. and Mrs. Collins, please make your way to the dancefloor."
"Why am I nervous?" I murmured to Billy.
"Because it's Tim," Billy whispered back.
Billy and I connected as At Last soared around us.
"A little on the nose, even for Tim." Billy's words were warm and breathy as he hugged me close to his body.
"It's perfect," I sighed as I rested my head on Billy's shoulder and let his strong frame lead me around the dance floor. "I love dancing with you. It's like flying."
I felt the jerk of Billy's chest as a laugh rolled through him. "I love dancing with you," he concurred with a kiss to my temple as the song wound down.
"If we could have Mary Collins to the floor for the mother/son dance," Timmy announced.
"Good luck," I smiled.
Billy kissed my hand before he released it and turned to a waiting Mary. Papa Loves Mambo filled the room, and, for the first time that day, I allowed the mourning for my father to edge into my thoughts. I had been stifling them all day, but as Billy twirled with Mary, I missed my own father. He would have loved the wedding. I glanced around the barn, thinking about how he and Billy could have spent hours talking about the post and beam technique. A sigh escaped me and drew Jackson's attention.
"I think I have the next dance," he offered.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, Uncle Tim asked if Viv and I wanted to have a dance with you and Dad, and we said yes. So, I think this is our cue."
As Jackson rose, Timmy called us all to the floor.
"I'm not as good a dancer as my dad," Jackson cautioned.
"That's okay. Neither am I!" I smiled back as Simple Man started up around us. "Did you two pick this?"
"Mmhmm, it seemed to fit since Dad used to play it for us all the time."
"It sure does," I agreed.
The four of us swung around each other, and every so often, I would catch a wink from Bily as he turned Viv around the floor in his arms.
"And now, I've saved the best for last," Tim announced.
"Wouldn't that be me?" Billy called out to him.
"Nope," Tim smiled as he approached. "Lily, I know I can't replace a dance with your dad, but may I have this dance?"
"Of course, Timmy."
Tim pulled me in close.
"Is this going to make me cry?" I asked.
"Possibly, but I have another handkerchief just in case," he smiled as he pushed play a last time and In My Life started around us. "Have I told you today how much I adore you?"
"I think you have mentioned it," I said as I let my head drop to Tim's shoulder.
The words of the song sunk deep into me and pulled tears from my eyes. As the song petered out, Timmy pulled me from his shoulder.
"Tears, you should have told me," he said as he pulled a handkerchief from his pocket.
"It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to," I managed.
"It is your party, and you sure can cry if you want to," Tim agreed as he dabbed at my eyes.
