Chapter 4

Zaid's pov
I walked through the front door of my house, feeling content after a pleasant lunch with my friends. As I walked in, I noticed my mother sitting on the sofa, reading a book.
"Assalamu Alaikum, Mom," I said as I walked over to her. "How's your day been?"
"Walaikum salam, Zaid. It's been good." My mother replied, looking up from her book. "How was lunch with your friends?"
"It was great, mom," I replied, smiling. I sat beside her and continued, "We were having a really good time until a girl decided to spoil everything"
"Oh no, What happened?" My mom asked concerned.
"Nothing serious..." I was explaining to her when Saad interrupted our conversation.
"A girl? Did you say a girl?" Saad teased.
"Nope, I said a boy" I rolled my eyes at him.
"Haha, tell me who is that girl. Is that my dear sister in law?" He continued teasing me.
"Oh please, keep your expectations low, bro. It's nothing as you think" I deadpanned.
"Stop teasing him, Saad. Let him complete what he was saying." My mom broke into our conversation.
I rested my head on her shoulder, while she caressed my hair. I explained all what happened at the restaurant to which my mom and Saad broke into a roar of laughter.
"Zaid, you also ruined her day. You need to agree on that. You have no idea how much girls hate when someone ruins their outfit" My mom said laughing.
"Crazy! Girls are crazy. But mom, I don't want to see her again. She's got such an attitude and I simply hate her. And Haziq needs to blamed too not only me. He is the one who pushed me." I complained but my mom smiled at my reply.
"I wish I could meet her. She's done something great. I love her, it'll be interesting if she becomes my sister in law." Saad teased, walking over to mom's side. He sat besides mom on the other side and gave her a hug and a kiss on her forehead.
"In your dreams", I mocked at him.
"Did you talk about anything interesting?" Mom asked.
"Well, we talked a bit about work and our plans for the future. Nothing interesting." I replied.
"That's nice," my mother said, looking at me, caressing my hair. "I'm glad you had a good time."
I nodded, then looked around the living room. "So, what have you been up to today? Didn't you go out with dad?"
"No, I decided to stay in and catch up on some reading," my mother replied, holding up her book. "But I did run some errands earlier this morning, so it hasn't been a completely lazy day."
I chuckled. "Well, it's good to have a lazy day every once in a while. You deserve it, Mom."
"Yes mom, you do" Saad added.
My mother smiled at us warmly. "Thank you, my boys. It's always nice to have you both home."
I nodded, feeling grateful for my mother's company. "It's always good to be home."
***************
I sat on the swing in my balcony, my laptop open on my lap. I had been working for hours, trying to finish the project plan that was due tomorrow. The air was cool, and the night sky was clear, dotted with stars.
As I typed away on my laptop, I couldn't help but glance up at the sky every few minutes. The stars twinkled above me, and the moon cast a soft glow over everything.
I saved the project that was prepared for tomorrow and opened my email. I had received the mail I've been waiting for. A mail from Hayat Arif. I've already gone through the details of my other team members except for Hayat.
I opened her mail and started reading her CV.
"Hayat Arif.... 21 year old..." I continued reading. I looked through her sample projects, they were all excellent. She must be really talented. I am looking forward to meet her tomorrow.
Once I completed all my work, I turned off my laptop and kept it on the small table beside the swing. A sense of calm washed over me as I gazed up at the night sky.
I leaned back on the swing and took a deep breath. I closed my eyes and listened to the soft creaking of the swing as it moved back and forth. The sound was soothing, almost hypnotic. I felt the gentle breeze ruffle my hair. The moment was blissful.
I sat there enjoying the night for few more minutes. After a good long time, I took my laptop and walked inside the room. I securely looked the balcony doors and closed the curtains. I placed the laptop on my study table and decided to go to sleep as tomorrow was going to be a long, tiring day.
********************
The sun had not yet risen when the alarm clock on the nightstand beeped insistently, jolting me from my slumber. Groaning, I reached out and hit the snooze button, trying to sleep for few more precious minutes before the day truly began.
But I knew I couldn't dawdle for long. If I do so, I will be late for my prayers. With a heavy sigh, I threw off the covers and swung my feet to the ground, rubbing my eyes to dispel the last remnants of sleep. I walked into the bathroom, brushed my teeth, washed my face and took wudu (ablution for prayers).
I returned to the room and spread the prayer mat on the floor and began my Fajr prayers. After a heartfelt prayers, I recited the Qur'an for a good long time. After an hour or so, I went back to sleep as it was 6 in the morning and I still had time before I leave for work.
At 8 in the morning, my alarm went off and I knew that I had to get up to make it to work on time. I shuffled to the bathroom, bleary-eyed and disheveled, and splashed water on my face. I gazed at my reflection in the mirror, running a hand through my tousled hair and wished if I could go back to my bed.
But I couldn't. I had responsibilities to fulfill. With a sense of excitement for today, I began to get ready for the day ahead.
I pulled on a clean white shirt and black pants, slipped my feet into my work shoes, and ran a comb through my hair. I grabbed my keys and wallet, double-checked that I had everything I needed in my briefcase, and headed out the room door. I had a good breakfast with my family and walked out the front door of my house after giving mom a hug and a kiss on her forehead.
The morning air was cool, the sky a deep shade of blue that hinted at the promise of a beautiful day. I breathed deeply, feeling the fresh air filling my lungs and energizing me.
I got into my car and started the engine, the hum of the motor filling the quiet streets. As I drove, I watched the world outside begin to come alive, people and vehicles starting to fill the roads and sidewalks.
Finally, I arrived at my workplace, a tall, imposing building in the heart of the city. 'Zaid Architectural & Design' board shining brightly as it could. A dream that came true. I parked my car, grabbed my briefcase, and made my way inside.
The lobby was bustling with activity, people hurrying to and fro, the sound of voices and footsteps echoing through the space. I rode the elevator up to my floor, feeling the familiar sense of anticipation and nervousness that always accompanied me at the start of a new workday.
As I walked to my office room, I mentally reviewed my schedule, my tasks and my goals for the day. I knew that I had a lot to accomplish, but I also felt a sense of purpose and drive, a determination to do my best to train the new students and make the most of the opportunities that lay ahead. I looked at my watch, it showed 9:30. They will arrive anytime now, I was looking forward to see all of them.
I called Haziq to check if he is prepared and he was. And with that, I settled into my chair, powered up my laptop, and began my workday, ready to face whatever challenges lay in store.
