Maddie looked around the school yard, but she couldn't find Grace.

She turned to her friends.

"Anyone see Grace?" she asked, then snuck into their minds.

How many ways can I tell Maddie that Gabe is- Nope, not Gavin's. Okay, moving on...

Rainbow unicorns dancing on rainbow buildings and playing with fluffy puppies- Nope, not Jillian's thoughts either.

"I hope she's okay," Maddie prompted. "We don't want anything...bad to happen to her, do we?"

She slipped into Preston's mind. His mind was currently cold and angry.

Maddie stepped forward and growled.

"Are you okay, Maddie?" Jillian asked.

"Um...I'm going to check the bathroom. Preston, I need to talk to you." Maddie grabbed his arm. His eyes widened as she dragged him toward the main building.

Maddie tried to send a message to Grace, but she wasn't sure she got it.

"What, Maddie?" he asked nervously.

"What did you do to Grace?" Her voice was as sharp and strong as her grip on his arm.

"Uh... nothing!" By that time, they were inside the school. Maddie grabbed Preston's collar and shoved him against the wall.

"Maddie! Come on, we're friends!"

"You're right, so tell me. What. Did. You. Do. To. Grace?" Maddie asked angrily.

"Stop it!" Grace shouted as she ran up to them and swatted at Maddie's grip on Preston's collar. Maddie dropped Preston and turned to Grace excitedly. "Maddie, what were you doing?"

"What did he do? That's what I was trying to figure out."

"Nothing."

He said he didn't care if I liked Gavin. He was being a total jerk.

That's probably because- I- I mean...

Maddie knew exactly why Preston was acting like that, but their group made a pact: They would always keep each others' secrets.

He...he's just worried about you.

That's literally what he said.

I bet he was just acting like that because he wishes that you would have told him.

"I can tell you two are having a secret conversation," Preston fumed.

"Yep. And you can't do anything about it. Come on guys. It's time to go home and figure out what we can do."
