Recruitment
"Welcome to my world, literally!" Chase announced as the group stepped through the portal into his dimension.
"This is more of a dystopian future kinda dimension, so everything here is...not the best." Chase added as Jack looked around in awe at his new surroundings.
Marvin and Jameson were the only ones not amazed by the landscape since they had seen it all before, their attention focused on leaving as soon as possible.
Tall dull gray skyscrapers loomed over them like giants, blocking the sunlight and casting their shadows on the group.
"What do you mean? It looks awesome here!" Mark gushed as he watched a car fly past him with no wheels, magnetic strips taking their place.
"In here, you're not allowed to do anything that doesn't benefit the community. You have to create technological advancements to be considered a part of Avenir." Chase muttered with a bitter scowl as he shoved his hands into his pockets.
Jameson made a face at the statement, clearly not happy with the wants of the city.
"Avenir?" Signe repeated in confusion.
"It's the name of the city. C'mon, I'll take you guys to my office." Chase offered, motioning for everyone to follow him.
He led them across the busy street to a building that looked just like the rest, the interior fairly similar to the office map in Prop Hunt.
"What do you do here?" Amy spoke up as she glanced around at the walls, noticing a few bullet holes in them.
"I own the office, so I'm my own boss. I usually end up just doing trick shots with this when I'm bored or making up statistics so it looks like I'm doing something." Chase remarked as he scooped a vibrantly colored NERF gun up off of the conference table and absent mindlessly pulled the trigger.
The foam bullet bounced off of the wall before falling perfectly through the hole in the center of the table.
"That's pretty good." Marvin observed, impressed.
"It's not my best." Chase shrugged in reply.
"I used to have a tv channel based around doing stupid shit like this, until..." Chase trailed off as a dark shadow crossed over his face, his gaze growing cold as he tossed the toy weapon back onto the table.
"When you had that nightmare, you woke up and screamed Stacy. Who is she?" Jack interjected curiously.
Chase avoided Jack's eyes by casting his gaze to the floor, pretending to be interested in his black tennis shoes more than the question.
"You don't have to tell us if you don't want." Mark added hastily, shooting a glare at his friend.
"No, it's okay. Stacy...god it's been awhile since that day." Chase sighed as sank down into a nearby black office chair, running a hand along the leather back in reminiscence.
"Stacy is-was my wife, and we had two perfect kids," Chase began as he removed his hat to run a hand through his hair before placing the hat back on his head.
"It started with a normal day at the office. I was doing stupid tricks like usual and my cameraman was recording them. It was only him and I, my make up person Sandra left early that day since I snapped at her and made her quit." Chase paused as he closed his eyes briefly, memories washing over him in painful waves.
When he opened his eyes again, Jack and all of his friends were still standing by him and waiting patiently for him to continue.
"Everything was fine until I got a call from Stacy. Out of the blue, she had decided that she...that she didn't love me anymore." Chase swallowed hard, blinking rapidly to keep his tears at bay.
"So we fought over the phone, and my camera guy recorded it all without me knowing it and soon enough, she told me how she really felt." Chase chuckled coldly, the sound mirthless and hollow.
"She told me she wanted a divorce and said that she was taking the kids with her."
"What?!" Signe exclaimed in disbelief.
"After that, I-I just grabbed a gun a-and I-" Chase broke off as he motioned putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger.
"You committed suicide?!" Jack yelped in shock.
"Yeah, but it obviously didn't work. Schneep saw what had happened since the camera guy published the episode. Schneep saved my life!" Chase snarled in irritation.
"I wanted to be dead." He continued in a faint whisper, the tears he had fought hard to ignore soon silently trailing down his cheeks.
"A-and the worst part is that there's still a part of me that wants me dead." Chase choked out in a strangled sob.
"Does anyone know you're alive?" Amy questioned gently.
"No, I didn't want them to. I couldn't face the world after what I did." Chase sniffed, angrily swiping away his tears with the back of his hand.
Jack opened his mouth to speak his condolences before changing his mind and opening his arms instead.
Chase glanced over at him before allowing Jack to wrap him in a hug, his face pressed against Jack's shirt which caused Chase's cold tears to soak through the fabric.
"I just want a family." Chase mumbled through Jack's chest.
"You've got one right here." Signe assured him, gesturing around her at the others.
They nodded in agreement, shooting him comforting smiles as he looked up at them.
"T-thanks." Chase stammered, wiping away the rest of his tears as he pulled away from Jack's embrace.
"No problem. Now, do you have any idea where to find Google?" Jack inquired.
"Yeah, he was considered faulty by the Google company, so I bought him for pretty cheap." Chase explained as he got out of the chair and left the room, the others following him to what looked like a small kitchenette.
Google was seated in the floor with his eyes closed, the white G on his blue shirt glowing brightly.
"Hey Google!" Chase called out, causing the automaton to snap to life in a moment.
"Yes?" Google replied, the word drawn out as his eyes flashed blue before settling on a brown color almost identical to Mark's.
"I need your help saving Earth. You in?" Chase questioned casually as if discussing dinner options and not the fate of humanity.
"Secondary objective is to destroy mankind." Google stated matter of factly, sending chills down Jack's spine at hearing a voice so similar to Mark's.
"Well you can't destroy mankind if it's already destroyed now can you?" Chase pointed out smugly.
Google glared at Chase with his cold eyes, clearly not happy about his decision.
"Fine." Google conceded.
"Let's take him back to Jack's place and make sure everything's okay there." Marvin suggested.
Everyone else nodded in agreement as he made a portal, stepping through to find something they didn't expect to see.
