xx. Interrogating Me

Interrogating Me

It was a little over a week after we got you back, when Abe called Lily, Lucas, Reid and I into his office. You still wouldn't leave your room for anything except for the one time I took you to the piano room.

You weren't the same and you never would be. I came to your room everyday and I still didn't notice how truly bad you were. I didn't notice and I should have. You shouldn't have had told me you were having nightmares during that first week of returning back. I should've known and I'm sorry I didn't.

"Okay, now that we're all here." I said. "What's the problem?"

Abe was sitting in chair behind his desk when we walked in but now he was standing. He looked at me when he spoke.

"This problem is, the council wants a trial."

"What?" Lily exclaimed. "They don't deserve a trial."

Abe nodded. "I'm well aware of that but unfortunately there isn't anything I can do about it. I don't know who they are going to put on the stand except for Lillian. The rest of you, it's a possibility."

"If there's gonna be a trial, what do I say?" Lily asked. "I can't tell them I'm the seer, now can I?"

"No, you cannot." Abe replied. "Which is why I called you all here. I'm not sure what questions are going to be asked, but your story must match the others."

"So, tell the truth but not the whole truth?" Lily said, unsure.

"Yes. Tell them your version of the story and stick with it. Do not waver from it."

"And what's exactly is our story?" I asked, lifting an eyebrow. "That we found Lily running out the woods, she saw where Millie was and that's how we found her? What do we say if they ask us how did we know she was raped if we weren't there? I'm assuming Millie isn't going to be there to defend herself, am I right?"

"She's not." He confirmed. "She wouldn't be able to handle it. Marie has her file and we will use them if needed. Right now, we work on Lily's story by omitting the visions she saw and go from there."

For next half an hour, we worked on a making a believable story but that still wasn't enough. There was something Abe didn't know and I planned for it to stay that way.

"Why are you here, Cipriano?" Xen asked me.

I grinned. "Can't I stopped by and see how my favorite guard watch is doing?"

He rolled his eyes at me. "Look, whatever your real reason is for coming here, I don't wanna know." He told me. "Just make it quick. I'll be gone for about five minutes. So, do whatever you have to before I return, got it?"

I nodded. "Got it. Thanks, man."

He walked away and I waited until the door shuts before heading to the first cell. She was sitting on her uncomfortable, rough looking bed, with her back against the wall, looking up at the blank ceiling.

Her ginger hair, is now washed out and oily. She had dark circles under her eyes, making her look even paler than she really was and it had nothing to do with lack of sunshine. She looked horrible and miserable.

And I didn't care. Not even a little bit.

She was my sister and she hurt the girl I loved because she thought we could've had this fairytale future together. She was absolutely insane to even think I would be with her for even a split second.

The girl I grew up with for the last thirteen years was gone and I would never see her again. She was replaced by this girl I hated. She disgusted me and it didn't even hurt for a millisecond to see her this way.

"Hayes?" She said, confused. "What are you doing here? I thought you said I was dead to you."

I nodded my head. "I still stand by my words but you're going to something for me and you're going to do because deep down, you still have a heart and if you don't I won't hesitate to kill you." I shrugged.

"I'm gonna die anyway. Either, you kill me or I rot in here for the rest of my life." She replied. "I'm dead no matter what."

"So, rot in here. Your trial is coming up and you aren't going to mention your love for me and your jealousy of Millie."

She smiled. "Oh, I see. You don't want me to reveal your naught secret. Don't worry your secret is safe." She zipped her lips.

I narrowed my eyes at her. "I'm not playing, Sophie. If you're sorry as you said you were, you will do what I said. That's the least you can do."

"Like I said, I'm dead either way." She shrugged. "Might as well be by your hands."

"She'll do it." A new voice joined our conversation.

I turn my head to the right and two cells down was Kyle. He had his hands on the bars, holding onto to them as he looked our way.

"We both will."

Seeing him, made my blood boiled and I balled my hands into a fist. I really wished Reid hadn't pulled me off him. He didn't deserve being locked away in this cell.

"Don't do it and there will be no one to stop me from murdering you. Like I should've." I warned him before looking back at Sophie. "Mom and Dad will be disgusted by you. They might even disown you like I did."

Hearing about her adoptive parents, her face fell. She swallowed as a tear fell out her eye.

"How are they?" She asked, wiping her tear away. "Have you heard from them?"

They were still with Ramadi for another week before our deal was over. The day I took you to the piano room, four days ago, Ramadi wanted information about Abe and I've been giving it to him. I told him every weakness he had, his people, his family. Every strength, the powers he had only when he had enough energy to use them. The meeting he went to every year to Seattle. The day, he was planning on attacking Ramadi. I told him everything I knew in hopes that he didn't hurt my parents again.

I didn't say anything. I was betrayed by her and felt like if she knew anything about them was better then not knowing. And she didn't deserve to feel even the slightly bit better. I left her wondering if they were okay or not.

When night came, I waited another hour before going into your room. Ever since you told me about the nightmares you've been having, I couldn't just ignore it anymore. I watched over you as you slept, feeling like I should've done more to keep you safe but this was all I could do.

I was just closing my eyes, when I felt you thrashing, I looked over at you, immediately, and try to wake you up but you wouldn't open your eyes. Then I got above you, shaking your shoulders. I told you to wake up, twice before you finally did.

"You're safe. I'm right here. No one's going to hurt you." I promised you.

You didn't say anything but nod your head. I got off you and pulled you closer to me. You rested your head on my chest as I kissed your forehead.

Ever since you flinched when I touched, the day you were still in the "hospital", I've been slowly working my way up. I didn't want to do anything that would trigger you into your frightened stage or your numbing state. I didn't want to risk anything. So, I only kissed you on your forehead, maybe your cheek.

I waited until you fell asleep before I did also. But it wasn't long after when it was time for me to leave. I moved carefully so I wouldn't wake you up. After giving you one last look, I left your room. I went to mine and got ready to head over to the school.

Abe wanted the gate to be fixed and today was the day he was hoping it could be fixed. It was all up to you and how you were feeling. I got into the SUV and waited for to Reid to show up but after ten minutes passed, I left without him. He could deal with Abe himself.

I drove to the school and joined the other guardian. We made sure every school, every dorm building was Morches free which took a few hours to do. The sun is in the sky now and Abe was on his way.

Lily was the first step of fixing the gate since the sun was up and all. I wasn't too far away from you. I could see you from where I was but you didn't see me as you watched what Lily was doing. It took about ten minutes for her power to go all the way around the school's gate before sinking into the mental.

When it was finished, you were walking back to the SUV, then you stopped, unexpectedly. You didn't move, you were frozen. Lily noticed it as well and told Abe. I was glad when Abe told me to get you right away.

If he hadn't, I would've still been on my way to you. As I got closer, I realized what the problem was. The snow around you wasn't falling anymore. They were frozen in midair. You were causing it by your emotions.

I asked you what was wrong and you just shook you head, not wanting to talk about it. That was fine but you needed to walk. The other guardians were watching and I didn't need them for them to start asking questions about the snow being frozen.

"I need you to move, okay? Can you do that for me?"

You opened your eyes before nodding. You began to walk forward, heading to the car. We piled into the vehicle and we're heading back to the mansion. You were silent and I know there was something on your mind. I couldn't do anything about it except by showing you I was here for you by putting my hand on your lower back.

I could feel your eyes on me when you turned your head but I don't turn away from the window. Abe was in the car with us and I was already pushing it by touching you.

It isn't until we get to the mansion, I figure out what was bothering you. Lily told me it was because of the trial tomorrow and I headed to your room. I knock on your door, telling you it was me before you let me in. I reached for your hand.

"You were thinking about the trial, weren't you?"

You nodded your head. "Yeah and you knew about it, right?"

I told you I did and you wondered why I didn't tell you about it and I said it was because I didn't want you to worry about. You already on some much on your plate as it was. You didn't need to add this to it.

"Because I'm not worried about it right now." You said, sarcastically.

"When I found out about it, it wasn't a great time to tell you. Abe didn't want you to know about it but I swear I was going to tell you today when I got back."

Which was lie because I didn't want you to about the stupid trial. I was going tell you after it was over, the next day but since you found out about it, I might as well informed you about what we were doing.

You stared at me, trying to figure out if I was telling the truth then you looked away, removing your hand from mine. You walked over to your window as I watched you.

You asked what we were going to do. You were worried about what Sophie and Kyle might say. I told you not to worry about that because I already took care it.

I knew you were wondering how I took care of you but I told you not to think about that, either. You glanced me and you didn't say anything. You didn't say anything for awhile or even blink. I didn't  know what you were staring out and I began to worry.

"Millie?" I said, moving closer to you.

You blinked your eyes, coming out of whatever trance you were in. You assured me you were fine as we walked over to me.

I believed you and told you that you didn't have to go to the trial because Lily knew what she had to do.

"But what if I want to go?" You asked, glancing up at me. "What if Lily needs me?"

"Abe doesn't think it's a good idea for you to be there." I paused. "Neither do I. You're still recovering. Seeing them, could make things worse. It could put you back into your numb state and who knows, how long you will hide in your room next time."

You didn't need to go. Seeing Sophie and Kyle right now wasn't best for you. You were recovering and you just left your room today in two weeks. You were just getting used to being social again.

"I have to try." You told me.

I shook my head. "No. You're not going. You're staying as far away as you can from them."

"Hayes.."

"No, Millie." I said, firmly. "You're not going."

You looked away from me and I tried to reach out to you but you moved away from me. You were upset with me and I sighed, getting that you wanted to be alone. I left your room and went to Abe's office.

I needed to talk with him and I hoped that he would understand where I'm coming from. I needed to leave and he was the only one who could grant me permission to go leave.

I knocked before entering. He was sitting at his desk, looking at papers. He glanced up when he saw me.

"What can I do for you, Hayden?"

He was the only person I knew that still called me by my full name and I was starting to hate it. Not even my parents called me that. It wasn't like they called me Hayes, either, but it was better than Hayden.

I took a sit.

"My parents sent me a letter telling me to meet them in Europe." I lied to him. "I don't know why but it seemed important that I go. The thing is, I don't know exactly where they are. Only you do."

He nodded. "Okay, let me look where I assigned them."

"You're letting me go?" I ask, surprised.

I didn't think it would be this easy to leave. I figured it would've took some persuading, maybe even some begging, but it didn't. He was allowing me to go without even questioning it.

"Of course I am." He said. "I trust what you're saying and if your parents need you then who am I not to grant it? I don't need to hear anything else. How long do you think you will be gone?" He asked, looking for their file.

It's not the same file as the one I recently put back. This one was different. It had exactly where they were located and what they were doing. It was smart of Abe to keep another filing cabinet in his office.

"A week at most." I told him.

That's why I couldn't find anything on them. Abe had the real files locked up in his office. Probably because of people like me who snooped through other's files.

He nodded. "Don't forget about Millian while you're gone."

"I couldn't even if I tried."

He opened the file and found what I've been looking for the past four months; the location.

"Florence, Italy."

Once I found out where they were, Abe put a spell on so I couldn't go out telling the whole world, where I was going or where my parents were. He said it was for safety reasons and that he would get my plane ready for me.

I left his office and made a few arrangements for you while I was gone. I contacted James and told him that he was going to fill my spot until I got back.

James was the rookie who shot me with a paralyzing dart, months ago, but ever since the day, he had matured and I was going to trust him to keep you safe. It was a whole lot of trust but Reid was going to be there with him and I trusted Reid with my life. I knew he wouldn't let anything happen to you.

You went back to school to finish the process of fixing the gate and when it was time to go to your room, it took me longer than I expected. I wasn't sure if you were still upset with me or not. But when I walked into your room, you literally ran into my arms. You were worried I wouldn't come.

"I will always come. You don't have to worry about that. I'm here for you." I assured you.

We climbed into the bed and all I could think of was the next day. The day of the trial. I didn't fall asleep until an hour later. Then the day arrived and I didn't know how to feel. You were going to the trial. I didn't know how you did it but whatever you did, it worked. Abe allowed you to be there.

Before we walked into the court room, I pulled you to the side, away from all the ears. I told you, you didn't have to do this. You didn't have anything to prove but you said it was something you had to do.

I couldn't understand but I said, if you couldn't handle it anymore, let me know and we're leaving. We walked into the court room and you sit in the very back while I sat in the second row.

I glanced at you when Kyle and Sophie walked in and you gave me a small nod, telling me you were okay.

The trial began and Sophie was the first one on the stand. She was asked why she targeted you and Lily and she said it was because she wanted to be the center of attention. Blah, blah, blah.

Then the question I knew they were going to asked, was finally spoken.

"And what was this thing she had that you wanted so badly?"

I looked at Sophie, hoping that she wouldn't reveal to the whole room the truth. Kyle promised me she wouldn't do it but I wasn't too convinced by his words. I didn't even know I was holding my breath until after Sophie spoke. She said she was jealous of your voice and that's when I exhaled.

They finished with Sophie and then I'm called up to the stand. He started by asking if I was the older brother of Sophie and I told him she was my adopted sister and but I didn't have a sister. Not anymore.

It was all questions about Sophie until it wasn't anymore. He started to ask about Kyle and I didn't know why. He asked if I was upset when you dated Kyle. I was but I told him I wasn't. Then the bastard brought up the irrelevant fight that happened, near the end of September.

"Yes, we did have fight but how is that relevant to any of this?" I asked.

Then he brought up how I nearly killed Kyle. I should've but I didn't thanks to Reid and that I could be charged. Yeah fucking right. I wouldn't be. I was doing my job.

I told him why I nearly beat him to death. He raped you and deserved much more than a few punches. Then he asked the golden question that pissed me off. He asked how did I know you were raped. He said I could've been taking my anger out on Kyle because of the fight last semester.

What the fuck? He really wanted to die right now, didn't he?

"Are you fucking kidding me right now? I don't give a damn about the fight at the school. I did it because he's a fucking rapist. He's a coward and a son of a-"

He interrupted me before I finished by dismissing me and calling up Lily. She was asked about why she didn't inform the school about the notes you were receiving, why you two decided to drink even when you know you were underage and then the same question I was asked. How does she know you were raped.

Then as the questioning went on, they really pissed Lily off. I could see the fire in her eyes as she slammed on the table, showing how frustrated she was. She told them the reason why you didn't show up, why you couldn't be there. It was all because of Sophie and Kyle and Lily wanted them to pay. We all did.

They said if you weren't here, then all they had to go by was Kyle's words. They dismissed Lily and then you stood up, announcing yourself.

"I am here today and I want to tell my story."

All eyes went to you and there was a recess so they could prepare themselves for your questioning. Abe wanted to know why you revealed yourself. A question I wanted to know as well. You said it was because we were losing and we needed her story told.

I didn't think we were losing that badly. Sophie already admitted to kidnapping you and Kyle would do the same. But you felt like it wasn't enough. You wanted to go up and that's what happened.

You were asked if you knew why Sophie held you against your will and you went along with Sophie's story. For the question about Kyle, you said it was because you broke up with and he still wanted to be together. She asked if it was because there was someone else.

Yeah. Me.

But you said there was no one else. You told her what happened at the warehouse from the start to the end. Hearing your story, I was angry and sad that it happened to you. You started to cry and all I wanted to do was kill Kyle. You said he raped you while Sophie watched, smiling. Bitch.

Then my favorite part come up. She asked how did you know you were raped when you were drugged. She said you could've said yes and forgot about it.
She was bullshitting me, right? It seemed like their job was to piss everyone off. That's exactly what they accomplished so far.

You said, you know what you said and you never said yes and he never asked. You looked at Kyle and delivered the final line.

"And he deserves to rot in hell."

Then it was Kyle's turn. He admitted to everything. He flat out said, he raped you and he agreed that he should rot in hell. He even went as far as apologizing to you.

The trial came to an end and you went to your room, not wanting to be around anyone anymore. I waited to the final verdict before going to you. I kept it simple and told you, you would never have to see them again. That was before I knew about Mallory Braxton.

You were so out of it, you didn't realize what day it was. Lily and the others remembered but that was because they weren't going through what you were going through.

Even Sophie told me before I walked out on her, after the trial.

"Happy Birthday, Hayes."
