xv. Forgetting Us
Forgetting Us
The following day, Abe ordered us to lead a search party in the woods we had last seen the Morches. It was early in the morning and we searched everywhere in the woods for their hiding spot but we didn't find anything.
Reid and I were in Abe's office, debating on what we should do.
"If we do that, then it could end in our death." I said, crossing my arms. "We searched the woods, thoroughly. There's nothing there."
"There has to be something there. A trail? Something that will give us a lead to Gethol."
Reid shook his head. "We're telling you, there's nothing but trees out there. They probably knew we would come looking for them and bailed out."
Abe studied the map laying on his desk. He pointed to an area we searched twice. "They have to be right here."
"Abe. Give it up. They're gone." I said, leaning against the wall.
We've been in Abe's office for hours and frankly, I was getting tired of it. Abe woke us up the crack of dawn to search the woods. We were gone for three hours. When we got back, he had us question Monica and Nathan. They were useless. They knew nothing about the ambush or Gethol.
"I'm not going to give up until I find him and bring him down." Abe said.
At times like this, I wished Allison were here. She's the only one to keep him from going insane. She's the only one to keep him calm. Hell, Allison was the only one to keep everyone calm.
If she were here, we wouldn't be running around like we lost our minds.
"Abe you need to rest." Reid said. "We'll work on it."
Abe was about the protest when we hear a voice. We knew who it was. It was you.
Abe moved away from his desk to the door. He opened it and walked out. Reid and I followed him down the hall. There's already an audience forming, surrounding you. Abe stared at his oldest daughter as you sang. I didn't know why you were singing but I was glad you were. The past two days had been out of control. Everyone had been busy. Abe needed this.
As you sang, I realized the lyrics had a deeper meaning. You were bringing Allison back. You wanted Abe to know Allison was still here with us. You wanted all of us to know. I understood now. It's been a while since anyone dare breathed Allison's name. Abe was barely getting over her death and years passed and he still couldn't cope with his loss.
You and Lily wanted Abe to know Allison was never truly gone. She was still here. She lived inside of you two.
I had hoped you would've forgot about the promise you made Sophie a few days ago but when you knocked on my door that night, I knew you hadn't.
"What happened?" I asked when I saw you standing outside my room.
You shook your head and said nothing. You wanted to ask me a favor but you changed your mind. Right before you walked away, I grabbed your wrist.
"What's your favor?"
When you told me what it was, I didn't know why I agreed to help you. It wasn't like you were going to find anything if you got into the room. I had their paper but yet I still agreed to help you.
"Wait for my signal." I warned you before walking around the corner.
Victor was the only one on duty just like he was the last time I came over here. I told him I needed to make an update for Abe and now I needed to make up another lie. I kept my face neutral as I walked up to him.
"Victor, Abe wanted me to tell you, Xen needs your help with Monica and Nathan."
Victor narrowed his eyes. "Why does Xen need my help? He's perfectly capable of watching the traitors on his own."
I held up my hands. "Don't ask me, I'm just the messenger. But if you don't want to go, I'll just tell Abe you didn't want to listen to his orders."
I turned around and began walking towards you, waiting for him to stop me. If anything came from Abe, Victor wouldn't hesitate to do it. He was quite gullible actually.
"Wait." Victor called out, making me stop. I smirk a little. "I'll go. Don't tell King Abe."
"Good." I said. "Abe would have your head, if you disobey his order. I'll take your post until you get back."
Victor nodded his head before heading towards the holding cells. I waited until Victor turned the corner before motioning you to come.
"You have five minutes." I told you and you nodded your head.
You walked into the room and I kept watch. By the time Victor got to Xen and Xen informed him he wasn't needed, Victor would be coming back quickly. You didn't have much time and the room wasn't small. It was huge and I was kind of hoping you didn't find my parents' file.
"Two minutes." I informed you.
"I found it." You replied.
Victor had to be on his way back by now. You needed to get out of there.
"Millie. Time to go."
You managed to get out the room and around the corner just before Victor showed up.
"Xen doesn't need me." Victor told me.
"Oh, my bad man. It must have been the other Victor."
I walked away before he could say anything. There wasn't another Victor. He was the only one but it'd take him a while to figure that out. When we reached your room, I asked you what you found out.
"Nothing."
I frowned. "What do you mean nothing."
"That's the point. I found nothing because there was nothing in their files."
"Are you sure?" I asked, playing the part.
You nodded. "I'm positive."
I looked away from you, thinking about whether or not I should tell you I took their files.
"We have to tell Abe someone took their file."
My head whipped harshly back to you. "No. You're not to mention this to anyone."
"Why not? Your parents can or could be in danger right now."
"Someone could have misplaced their file. There's no point in causing a scene if it's nothing. I'll search for it."
"Fine. What do you want me to tell Sophie?"
"Tell her, they're fine and their letter got sent to a different place." I said. "Make something up."
"Hayes. I don't know about you but I feel like they're in serious trouble."
They are. I thought.
"I know my parents. If they were in trouble, I would be the first one to know."
And I was the first to know. He came straight to me and told me he had them. He also told me not to tell anyone about our deal. I wasn't going to but sometimes I wanted to.
We were running late the next day. It was all because of you. You didn't want to wake up and when you finally decided to get up, we didn't have much time to get to the school. Need to remind you it was thirty minutes away.
We made it just in time. I stood in the back of the class and noticed when Lucas saw the cut on Lily's arm. I didn't know if she was going to tell him about the attack or not. No knew about it and honestly I didn't want anyone to know. There hadn't been an attack in years. They were after you and Lily and if enough people caused a scene about the attack, you two could be forced to leave the school in ordered for the school to be considered safe again. It didn't matter if there was a gate surrounding the place.
The day was going by quickly and I was standing by the wall when you walked up to me and out of nowhere you slapped me, hard.
"What the hell was that for?"
"Don't ever make me lie again. If something happens to them, it's on you." You told me before walking away.
It's on me.
Of course it was. Ramadi shouldn't have got the chance to take them if it wasn't because of me. He needed me and instead of refusing his deal, I made an oath with him. An oath I was pretty sure was voided. Ramadi couldn't be trusted. Ever.
Kyle sat beside you doing lunch and I was still angry at you for slapping me but you had every reason to do so. Kyle talked about the performance but mainly about you.
You blushed when he kissed your neck and I could feel the jealousy rushed through me. I tried not to let it show but I think I might've failed.
The week passed by and soon it was time for the Halloween bash. It was also the day, my three weeks were up. Ramadi was expecting his information and I couldn't hold back anymore. He wanted it now.
I didn't know what you planned on singing but for my parents' sake, I hoped it would be a song filled with hatred.
I glared at a group of boys as you walked pass them, unaware of their staring. As soon as we got in the gym, I shot daggers at every guy who kept their lingering eyes on you for a second too long.
When I picked you up, I knew I was going to have to kill a few boys tonight. You opened your door and I was speechless. You had on tight skin leather outfit on. It showed off your beautiful body but I knew others wouldn't see what I saw. They saw you for your body, nothing else.
I tried my best to keep you covered but every way you went, there were guys looking you up and down without shame whatsoever. I bit my tongue to keep from snapping at Lou. What was she thinking when she created this outfit?
Reid tried to help me keep you safe but there wasn't much he could do. He had his own job to do. Kyle found you and his eyes widened.
That little fucker. Rage shot through my veins. I had to control my anger. You would never talk to me, if I murdered your precious boyfriend.
It wasn't like you talked to me everyday but you didn't cut me off completely.
"You look..." Kyle struggled for the right words.
I rolled my eyes. I began listing words from the top of my head to complete his sentence.
Amazing, incredible, gorgeous, unearthly hot, irresistible.
"Like a bad ass." You finished for him.
Kyle smirked. "Yeah. That too."
You laughed as you pushed him, slightly. "You look handsome too."
"What's a prince, without his princess." Kyle said, corny.
But, yet, he's rewarded with another smile. I followed them to a table where Reid, Lucas and Lily are. Lucas was dressed like a pirate, maybe Jack Sparrow and Lily was superwoman.
"Millie!" Daniella yelled over the loud music. "You look hot."
"Well thanks." You said. "You don't look to bad yourself."
Daniella rolled her eyes. "Please, I'm a freaking witch. Laura forgot to make my costume on time. Can you believe her?"
"Where is she anyway?" Lily asked.
"Ducking and hiding from me." Daniella said, crossing her arms. "Lily I love your costume."
Sophie joined us. "Hey, Hayes. You like my outfit."
"Yeah. I guess."
"You guess?"
I shrugged. "It's alright. At least you're not revealing anything."
She smiled. "Why's that?"
"Because I'll be in prison for murdering every guy who looks at you."
Her smile widened. "Aw, you do love me."
"Yeah, I do." I told her, ruffling her hair.
"Quit doing that!" She yelled. "You're gonna mess up my hair!"
Kyle and Lucas came back with drinks in their hands. The girls took it from their hand and took a sip of the green drink.
"What is it?" Sophie asked, looking inside of the cup.
Lucas shrugged. "I don't have a clue but it was label Witch Spell, Drink if you dare."
Sophie grinned. "You think they spiked it?"
"Nope." Kyle said. "Ava can get her hands on a lot things but alcohol isn't one of them."
Sophie's shoulders dropped. "Oh bummer." Then she perked up. "I love this song! We have to dance."
"Might as well." Lily said, placing her drink down.
"Alright." You said. "Let's go."
Sophie grinned as she started dancing while backing away from us. Lily grabbed Lucas hand as she sung the lyrics. Kyle took your hand and they followed.
Leaning against the wall, I watched them dance. Reid did the same. Two girls went up to you, stopping your fun. They said something to you and you nodded your head. You faced Kyle and informed him what's going on.
I followed behind them. "Where are you going?"
"I have to perform." You said, walking up the stage stairs.
The two girls followed you. I walked around to the front of the stage where an audience was forming.
I heard your voice before I saw you and if I knew I was going to be the reason behind your song, I would have never did what I have done.
You walked towards the front of the stage, singing you lyrics loud and clear. Your voice rang out in the silent gym.
You looked out into the sea of faces and you stared right into my grey eyes. I knew the song was about me but you were asking me everything you couldn't ask me that day I hurt you.
If I could go back in time, I would. I would do it right now. I never meant to hurt you. You fooled me. The passed weeks after you slapped me, everything between us was okay. You never once gave me a hint that you still hated me. I thought we were moving on.
Obviously, I was wrong. You wrote a song for me telling me everything you kept locked up.
I could feel two pairs of eyes on me but I kept my face straight. I refused to look at Reid and Lily. They knew what happened between us but they didn't know the whole story. They just knew, I broke your heart in the worse way ever imagined.
I wanted nothing more than to run on to the stage and pour my heart out to you but I couldn't. Instead I watched you flaunt your hatred at me and sing how you were finally letting me go.
I was nothing more than a memory you wanted to erase.
The song ended and the clapping and cheering began. You smiled but it dropped when your eyes landed on me. You thanked the audience before walking off the stage. I moved towards you.
You tried to hide from me but I caught you by your wrist.
"Millie." I whispered.
"This is what you wanted. You wanted me to forget about everything that happened between us." You glanced up at me. "Now you have it."
You broke free from my loose grip and I watched you disappear into the crowd. I punched the wall but not even physical pain could over throw the pain I was feeling inside.
Days passed by and I can't make you see how much I missed you. You wouldn't talk to me or spare me a glance. You moved on and I wished you didn't. I wished I could tell you how much you meant to me but every time I tried it came out wrong.
I was never good at telling people my feelings. This life I had chosen hid my emotions. It toughened me up. If the Morches couldn't pinpoint our emotions, they wouldn't know what we were feeling.
They wouldn't know our weaknesses. But it caused me everything that mattered to me. I didn't know how to open up. I couldn't tell you what you meant to me. And everyday that passed by, I lost you more and more and you grew closer to him.
He brought the sparkles back into your beautiful hazel eyes and your bright warm smile to your face. He lets out your amazing laughs. He told you everything, I wanted, needed, to say and you were falling for him.
I acted like it didn't faze me but truly it did. Reid knew and he gave me advice but I didn't have it in me to tell you when you felt nothing for me anymore. You made that very clear in your song.
I couldn't blame you. I hurt you. I broke your heart. I lied to you. I hid things from you. You were eventually going to leave me. You were going to give up on us, on me, sooner or later. I just sped up the time.
If I wasn't a closed off jerk, we could've still been together. I could of still had you. You would have still been mine. Abe wouldn't have liked it but he wouldn't had known. You could have be my little secret and I would have been yours.
I pushed you away and now you were pushing me away.
My fingers hits the piano keys harshly. I exhaled, deeply as I ran my fingers through my hair. Why did I have to be a screw up? It was way past midnight and my body was restless. My mind wouldn't shut down for me to fall asleep. I kept thinking about you and everything I have done to cause you so much pain.
I sat in the only room, I could be alone. The only room I could think straight in.
I tried playing my song but I kept thinking about you. I knew I should let you go but there was something about you that kept me hook to you. You weren't like the other girls I had been with. You were different.
I closed my eyes and let myself reminiscent the good times we had together. The times I made you smiled and laughed. The times you loosened up and been yourself. The first time you kissed me to the times words didn't need to be spoken to understand our feelings. The flashbacks ran over me like a giant wave. It began with the first time we meet thirteen years later.
I shifted my eyes and our eyes met. You looked away but you looked again and I was still staring. You were beautiful.
"Who's she?" I asked, nodding my head in your direction, even though I already knew who you were.
Teri glanced at you. "Oh that's Audrey, my cousin." Teri introduced you. "Audrey this is Hayes, my reckless friend."
The flashback switched to the time I almost kissed you on Fourth of July.
"You're going to miss the fireworks if you keep staring at me." You told me, looking straight ahead.
"Good." I said. "I rather watch you. You're more beautiful."
You turned your head. My eyes darted to your lips. I started to lean in but the sound of explosions stopped me.
Then it jumped to the time your lips pressed against mine.
"What are you thinking about right now?" I asked.
"How crazy I must be for not giving in already and just fall for you."
"Stop resisting." I whispered as I slowly leaned in.
My lips brushed against yours. I gave you time to pull away but you didn't. You wrapped your arms around my neck and brought me closer to your body.
My mind stopped at the time I made you smile on the ferris wheel.
"And that's not even the best part." I told you.
"What's the best part?" You asked.
"This." I gently turned your head and leaned in for one slow, heart pounding, fire igniting, kiss.
I pulled away, smirking."Was that spontaneous enough for you?"
You grinned. "Even better."
I opened my eyes. I couldn't relishing in the past. The past I messed up in.
The words I told you months ago eochs throughout my mind.
"What I feel for you is nothing compared to what I felt with any other girl. You make me feel emotions I never could imagine. What I'm feeling for you is real."
It hurts me to think that you thought I was using you. You thought I was a player. Maybe I was at first but it changed over time. It crushed me to know you trusted me with everything and I messed it all up. The wounds I cause will heal but the scars would remain forever. The pain I made would be stuck with you.
But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was, I was telling the truth.
