xii. Mistaking Us
Mistaking Us
I glanced at your sleeping form and you were peaceful, laying your head on my pillow. I was still in wet clothes so I decided to take a shower. I grabbed a pair of basketball shorts and as soon as I was walking into the bathroom, you muttered my name.
I stopped and looked over to you. I thought you were awake but you weren't. I didn't move for a couple minutes, hoping you would say more about your dream. I knew I could always look inside your mind and found out what you saw but I didn't want to invade your privacy and last time I tried to see into your mind, I was kicked out, forcefully.
When you didn't say anything, I entered the bathroom and turned the shower on. I didn't stay in for long because I knew I would only think about you and I already thought about you more than I should have.
I walked out the bathroom and you had your fingers wrapped around the doorknob, planning on leaving.
"What do you think you're doing, Boo?" I asked you, causing you to stop.
You spun around and said you were going back to school and to stop calling you were nickname.
I ignored the second part because I was never going to stop calling you Boo.
"I thought you didn't want to go back."
"I know but I'm feeling better and I don't want Mrs. Kovok to tell Abe I left school." You told me.
I looked into your eyes and I knew you didn't care if Abe found out. You were lying but I didn't push you. I didn't want you to break down again. I just told you to give me minute and I got ready.
As I entered the room again, I informed you we could stop by your room so you could change clothes. You were wearing my clothes and you wet uniform was in your hands. We left my room and walked to your dorm building.
Ms. Davis (that's her name right?), glanced up from her computer and greeted you. She asked you what you were doing and you told her your uniform got wet and you were going to change.
She looked at your outfit and then your uniform in your arms. She asked if Selena knew we were here and before you could give us away, I answered her.
"Yes. Otherwise we wouldn't be here. Now would we?"
She glared at me and muttered for us to make it quick. You rushed to your room and changed as I leaned against the wall, waiting for you.
You came out your room and I asked you if you were sure you were okay to go back to school. You said yes. I didn't urge anymore. We walked to the school and Selena was talking to him.
That day was the third mistake I made. The first mistake was making you fall in love with me. The second was lying to you about how I felt and hurting you.
He made eye contact with you and I should've knew right then and there, I shouldn't have trusted him but I didn't have a reason not to. He was just another guy at this school who wanted your attention and I couldn't blame him for that.
You didn't want Selena to see you but she did and she asked what you were doing. You were supposed to be in Vance's class. You told her something came up and Selena got worried. She wanted know if she needed to notify Abe but you told her no.
Selena didn't question you anymore and we headed to the gym. See the thing about Vance he could care less about who you are. If you were in his class, you got treated the same way as everyone else. He could be tough on you most of the time but he just wanted you to be the best you could be.
He tested you farther than you think you could go and I was grateful for that. He showed me how far I was capable of going and then some if I was willing to. He challenged mentally, physically and emotionally. He was great at what he did.
You slipped into the locker room and changed and joined Sophie. She looked so innocent as she smiled, brightly, at you. It never crossed my mind she could be evil. Not for a split second. She was my sister. I knew her for her whole life and she never been violence or aggressive but that just show people could change.
"Cipriano? Gage?" Vance called.
Reid and I walked over to him.
"I have something to deal with after school and I need to know if you two could cover practice for me." He said. "It's nothing extremely hard. They know what they're doing. Well they should know. I just need you two to guide them if they should mess up and teach them a few things."
I nodded. "Yeah we could do that."
Vance blew his whistle to get everyone's attention. He informed you all that you would be playing dodgeball and he didn't care if you broke a nail because it wasn't jr. high anymore.
Vance had noticed you arrived late and he gave you consequences. It wasn't as bad as you thought it was but maybe because I could do that without breaking a sweat.
You had to do to ten push ups, twenty jumping jacks, and one sweet sixteen. See not that bad. Even though you were terrible at push ups, you did them. I could tell you were tired just by doing that.
"Way to go, Mil." Reid said, smiling.
Wordlessly, you walked past him and flipped him off. He laughed and you joined your team. The first two rounds you really didn't do much. You let your team do all the works until the last round.
While you and Lily were debating, Ava made her move. She hit Lily and it was all on you whether your team won or lose. Your team didn't have much faith in you but you pulled through.
Sophie came to talk me for a bit and I didn't even realized she was attempting to flirt with me. I just thought she missed me so much.
It wasn't until lunch arrived when he showed up. He ignored my glare and sat beside you anyway. He said hey to you and you said it back.
"Did anyone told you, you have beautiful eyes? I mean they're an amazing shade."
You blinked your eyes. "No. I don't think so."
I never did because everytime I stared into your eyes, I got lost in them and I have no words to say.
"Well, obviously they're blind. You're so gorgeous. Any guy would be lucky to have you."
I didn't need for him to say that because I already knew how lucky I was. But I let you go and that was the worse decision I ever made. I would always reget it.
You smiled at his comment as you thanked him. He told you his name and you tried to introduced yourself but he interrupted you.
"I already know who you are. Princess Millian." He stood up as the bell rang. "I would like to get to know you better but until next time." He kissed your hand before he left.
Sophie and Lily got into a little disagreement and I hardly paid any attention to it. Sophie stormed off to her class.
We walked into your last class and Dean had your music for the performance. You were happy that you had a lead to work with. Class began and you learned a new song. After school ended, you wanted to work on your assignment with Lucas.
"Where are you going?" I asked, stopping you.
You frowned. "To practice our song."
"No you're not." I told you. "You're coming with me."
You rose an eyebrow. "Why?"
"Reid and I have to take over Vance's training class."
Lucas didn't know there was practice and I informed him he should hurry up and get there before he was late.
You asked if you had to go with me and I told you no you could go back to your room. You thought about it before you said you would go with me with.
We walked over to the gym and I joined Reid. We discussed what we were going to teach them. The majority of the class were stretching and warming up. But only one caught my eye.
He was talking to you again.
"Ashton! Get over here!" I yelled.
I started practice and Reid and I taught them a new defensive move. It wasn't hard it was quite simple. Everyone got it down almost instantly. We paired them up and let them spare for bit.
I walked around, helping those who needed it. Kyle was doing pretty well but he fighting stand was a little unbalanced. I tried to help him out but that little bastard didn't want to listen and argued with me.
"I'm trying to save your life." I told him. "It's a rookie mistake. Learn from it because out there, in the real world, where Morches are, it's going to get you killed."
He stepped closer to me. "Look, I don't need your damn advice. I can handle myself."
"Back away."
"Or what?" He challenged, taking another step.
By this point, we had no space in between us. Kyle was brave and cocky but he didn't have the experiences I had. He didn't know what I could do to him.
"Walk away." I warned him.
"Just because you graduated doesn't mean your better than everyone and I'll prove it right now." He said before he punched me.
I reacted immediately. I could get into trouble for fighting him but at the moment I didn't care. He thought for a second he could beat me but he was wrong and if it wasn't for Lucas pulling us apart, he would be on bed rest for the next month.
I looked over to you and you shook your head at me. You were disappointed. I heard you yell for someone to stop us. You wanted us to stop, for me to stop, and I didn't listen to you.
"Millie! Wait."
You sped up your pace but I grabbed your arms and you spun around.
"What!"
"Why did you leave?" I asked, ignoring your anger.
"Why did you fight him? You could've hurt him."
I looked at you in confusion. "Are you seriously defending him right now?" I asked, angrily. "He threw the first punch."
"I'm not defending him. I know he hit you first but you know you're stronger than him. So why would you let him get to you?"
You had point and you were right. I shouldn't have let him get to me.
"I'm sorry."
You let out a frustrating breath to calm down.
"Don't apologize. You don't have to."
"Don't be mad at me." I said, softly.
You glanced up. "I'm not." You assured me. "I want to go to my room."
I understood why you didn't want to go back inside the gym. I looked across from me and I saw James walking.
"James! I need you take Millie to her room."
He agreed to it and before I walked away I gave you one last look.

I arrived at your door at the same time I alway did. I knocked and I heard you running around your room. You told me you were coming and you didn't open the door. Then you said to give you minute. Finally you opened the door and my eyes grew big for a second.
Your hair looked like a nestbed but you still managed to look beautiful.
"Are you ready?" I asked.
"Yeah we can go." You said.
I asked if you were sure you were ready and you narrowed your eyes at me and called me a jackass. I chuckled as we walked down the stairs.
Reid and Lily were walking ahead of us but they turned around when they heard us. Lily commented on your hair and so did Reid. You told them it didn't look that bad and that set them off. Reid said it looked horrible and he and Lily doubled over in laughter.
Then he showed up and joined the conversation.
"I think you look beautiful. As always. "
"Thank you! See you guys are just being jerks" You said.
Lily shook her head. "No we're telling you the truth."
You ignored her and focused on Kyle. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to walk you to school"
"You walked all the way over here, to walk me to school?"
He smiled. "Yeah. It's that a problem?"
He took a step forward and I stopped him.
"That's close enough"
You frowned and Kyle held up his hands.
"I'm not gonna hurt her."
He lied to you. He did hurt you.
You pulled my hand off of Kyle's chest. "Just because you hur-" You stopped yourself. I knew what you what were about to say. "are a jerk doesn't mean everyone else is."
You grabbed Kyle's hand and walked in front of everyone. Once we got to the school you and Lily went to the restroom. Sophie came a few minutes later. Kyle spoke to her before he left and Sophie walked into the restroom.
We waited for ten minutes before you guys came out.
"About time" Reid said. "What took so long?"
"I don't know" Sophie said, sarcastically. "Why don't you ask Lily? She's the one who thinks she knows it all."
"I'm trying to look out for her unlike you." Lily snapped.
Reid and I exchange glances. What the hell?
"Guys, stop." You said.
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Whatever." She said, walking.
Class started and instead of listening to your English teacher, you were writing. As soon as the class ended, you jumped out your seat and I followed. You were smiling as you walked to Ezra's class. You informed him that you finished the song and he was proud of you.
We were on our way to your next class when Sophie ran pasted us. You went after him and I stood in the same spot. I would've followed but I figured Sophie would want to talk to you without me hovering.
But I was wrong.
"What happened?" I asked when you came back.
You shrugged. "I don't know. She wants to talk to you."
"Wait right here." I ordered you.
I went into the room Sophie was in and she had tears coming down her face. Once she saw me she hugged me.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"It's their anniversary."
I didn't need her to clarify to understand who she was talking about. Today was the day her real parents died. We didn't talk about them much because Sophie didn't want to. She said even though she was really young, she could remember pieces of them.
I didn't say much. I just comforted her until she calmed down and was ready to go to class. But I didn't that day she was just using me. She wanted to know how it would feel if I were actually her boyfriend and not her brother.
I walked out the room and you were gone. I headed to her class and once I set my eyes on you, I was mad.
"I thought I told you to wait."
Without looking at me, you answered.
"Yeah well. You were taking too long and now I have lunch detention."
"If you would have listened to me, you wouldn't have detention."
"Oh yeah? What would you have said?"
"It doesn't matter now but he wouldn't have given you detention." I responded.
"Yeah because everyone is so scared of you." You muttered, sarcastically.
Lunch came around and Lily wanted to know if you were still eating lunch with Kyle. You said you couldn't because you had detention. I was secretly happy you got detention. I didn't want you to be anywhere near Kyle.
You and I got into a disagreement and Lily commented about how cute we were when we argued. It was something a couple would do. Lily really wanted us to be together.
"So, what got to Sophie?" You asked.
"Nothing."
"Are you really not going to tell me?"
"It's none of your business." I snapped.
You flinchd from my tone and looked away from my glare. I didn't mean to snap at you. I was still angry at you from earlier when you didn't listen to me.
I exhaled. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have snapped at you."
You glanced up and my eyes softened.
"You've been apologizing a lot, lately." You said. "Why?"
"I've been an asshole, lately." I admitted. I rubbed the back of my neck as I looked down. "And I'm trying to stay on your good side."
"You're trying to stay on my good side?" You repeated as I looked up. "I'm not going to replace you, if that's what you're worried about."
I shook my head. "It's not that." I assured you.
"Then what is it?"
I wanted to stay on your good side because I was still hoping that you would give me a chance to explain and maybe then we could go back to being the way we used to be.
"It's nothing." I told you.
The day went on and in Ezra's class you guys perfomed your song to a few classes who weren't busy, Lily's class being on of them.
When the song ended, Lucas made his move. I already had known he and Lily had something going on and I wished we could be like that but that was being a little optimistic.
After all, it was forbidden.
