viii. Ruining Us
Ruining Us
Two weeks ago, you found out a lot of things. You were a princess, the siren, the one connected to the moon. You had a twin sister and your father was alive. Thirteen years of secrets were finally coming into the light but that's not all. You wanted to know more. More than anyone was willing to give you. Well at least not yet, anyway.
"The rookies are here." Abe informed me, looking out the window. "Why don't you go and greet them."
I walked out the headquarters and down the stone stairs. I pushed my hands into my pockets as I headed for the steel gate. There were a couple of handful of rookies. I knowledge one of Abe's guardian with a nod and continued to the gate.
"Welcome to the headquarters." I told the newcomers. "Your jobs will be simple but don't expect us to baby you. Because, we won't. This isn't high school. You won't be given a second chance to redeem yourself if you fail. Do as you're told and if you follow the rules, you'll be fine. Any questions?"
I scanned the crowd and they seemed a little nervous. They shouldn't be. Their biggest test was yet to come.
"Follow Guardian Goulding. He will tell you what job you will be doing, along with location. With him, ask as many questions as you can because once you get to your new location, we won't be able to help you."
I turned around and headed back to the headquarters. That was when I saw you sitting on the stone bench, looking at me. As soon as my eyes made contact with your hazel ones, I looked away. I couldn't look at you without feeling regrets. I felt terrible for what I said to you and there was no taking them back.
But it was for the best. It was supposed to be for the best and yet everytime I thought about you, it didn't feel right and it never would.
I went to my room and laid on my bed was a black bag with a note stuck on it. I picked the yellow note up and read it.
Wear this, Lou.
Setting the note aside, I picked up the bag and unzipped it. It was a tuxedo. I wasn't sure if I had to dress up for this event but I didn't want to face angry Lou so I decided to wear it anyway.
I showered and got ready for tonight's big event. I put the black tux on and looked into the mirror.
Not bad. I thought to myself.
There was a knock on my door and I opened it. Ian, one of the guardians, stood there. He informed me that the limo was ready and I would be riding with you to the school.
I wasn't too thrilled about the ride to Arysn High. You had a habit of asking a lot of questions. Questions I didn't even want to think about, much less answer them.
I walked outside and stood beside the black limo, waiting for your appearance. You came out a few minutes later and my heart raced. You were in a floor length gold dress. You looked incredible but I couldn't tell you that.
I greeted you with a nod and opened the door for you. You stepped in and I followed behind.
You were surprised I was coming with you. You asked if I was riding with you and I replied with a cold remark.
"I'm your protector, I have to ride with you."
You didn't say anything after that and I stared out the window to keep myself from looking at you. But that didn't stop you from looking at me. I could feel your eyes on me so I turned my head.
"What?" I asked, harshly.
You wanted to know why I made you fall in love with me. I didn't have a good answer to that so I told you it was just a fling and nothing more. That angered you. You said you knew what I fling was and that wasn't one. I shrugged and told you to believe what you wanted.
You said you didn't believe me and I still have feelings for you. I corrected you with a lie. I said I had feelings for you and they passed. They should've passed; I ruined us.
You shook your head, not believing me. "No they didn't, Hayes." You said. "A love like ours is rare."
Your words didn't help me to move forward. I wanted to cave in but I couldn't and I became a cold jerk to you. I told you to drop it and we were over. I looked away before I could see your hurt face.
For the rest of the ride, it remained silent. When we got to Arysn High, I got out the limo and I didn't help you out. Selena was talking to Lily and Abe.
She told you how gorgeous you were. She hinted about you and Lily going to school. You were confused and asked if going to school would put the rest in danger. Selena said no and she would explain it later.
We followed Selena to where the ceremony was being held and you and Lily went behind the stage. I stood on the side, watching as you talked to Lily. I knew Lily mentioned me when your face fell and you sadly shook your head. You didn't have time to worry about it because Selena began the ceremony then.
She started with a speech then she introduced Lily and you. You stood there smiling, even though you didn't want to. You shook many hands and once you shook the last one, you sat down while Lily went to dance.
You weren't alone for very long. A guy named, Lucas Carter, sat beside you and you two had a conversation. You talked to him for the rest of the ceremony. You even smiled once or twice and they were real.
I saw Sophie and I knew she wanted to talk to me. I haven't seen her in some months but I couldn't talk to her. I had to watch you.
Once the ceremony was over, I walked you to your room. We got to the dorm building and as soon as Ms. Devanney, the girls' guard watch, saw me she started talking about her strict no boys in the girls' building rule. I interrupted her and told her I was dropping you off.
She glanced at you and was surprised to see you. She handed you your room key and told you everything should be ready but if it wasn't to let her know. She glared at me and told me to make it fast before ordering some girls to get to their rooms.
We walked up the stairs and you waved at Lily. We reached your room and you unlocked it. You were shocked to see your room. It wasn't your typical dorm room. It was more like a fancy hotel room. You muttered it was overrated and I told you every room was like this.
I scanned the room, looking for anything that might be out of place and I didn't see anything. I walked out but not before I heard you say.
"Well goodnight to you too."
On my way to my room, I thought about what Ramadi had planned. What would he make me do next? He knew how powerful your voice was but I knew that he didn't pick six months randomly. He was up something and it had to involve your eighteenth birthday. Even though I hadn't heard from him in some weeks, I knew he wouldn't remain silent forever.
The next morning, I knocked on your door and you opened it. You asked what I was doing and I told you I was taking you to school. You nodded your head and grabbed your schoolbag.
We didn't talk on the way to the school and it didn't feel right not being able to speak to you like I used to.
We arrived and went to Selena's office. Selena wanted to have a meeting with you and Lily. She told me last night, she wanted to discuss some things with you two.
Reid stood up when you entered the office and you took his place. Selena pulled out a thick folder from her drawer. She informed is it was class schedule and how she tried to get you and Lily in the same classes.
She gave you your schedule and you schemed through it, comparing it with Lily. Selena continued with the meeting and said Abe didn't want her to depry you from your talents.
"Speaking of powers," Lily said "aren't we putting the other students in harm?"
Selena shook her head and explained how safe Arysn High was with the gate but to be on the safe side Abe doubled up on guardians. Not only was Ramadi after you two, so were our mortal enemy. Morches lived off of blood. They craved it and they were dangerous. They're powerful but if they got your blood, they would be next to impossible to beat.
She said Reid and I would attend every class with you and Lily and escort you to and from school. She told you that it was for more protection because you're the princesses and the seer and siren. She warned you to keep your powers on the downside.
We left the office and you began to talk to Lily and that was when Sophie pushed passed you.
"Hayes!" She shouted in excitement as she wrapped her arms around me. "I missed you."
I chuckled, a little as I hugged her back.as "Missed you too." I told her. "Sorry I couldn't talk to you last night."
She pulled away and said. "I know, I know
guardian stuff." Sophie looked at you and smiled. "I hope you're not working my brother too hard "
You were shocked to hear I was brother and pointed out how we looked nothing alike. Sophie told you we weren't blood but we were close and she introduced herself. Lily mentioned Sophie being a freshman and Sophie said she looked older and she wished she was older so she could have fun.
I knew what fun she was referring it and I told her she wasn't drinking no matter how old she was. She rolled her eyes and asked you if I let you have fun.
You smiled and was about to tell her about us but I interrupted you. I grabbed your arm and dragged you around the corner. I pushed you against the wall.
I told you no one could know about us and you asked why. I explained because it was forbidden.
"If it was forbidden." You interrupted me. "Then why did you make me fall for you?"
I didn't answer you and you searched my eyes. When I didn't respond back you told me to let go of you and you ripped my grip from you.
The rest of day went smoothly. Danielle and Laura mentioned Ava Vanders and how you stole her spotlight. No one knew how powerful your voice was but they knew you could sing pretty well.
When we got to your last class of day, Ezra Dean welcomed you and he wanted to see where your range was. He asked Ava to pick your song and you thought about the lyrics.
Ezra told you to begin and you started the song. During the song, you looked straight at me and sung to me. You were questioning me and I had to look away. I could feel how broken you were and so did every one else.
But they thought you were just connecting with the song. They didn't know that how you actually felt. Ezra praised you and he came up with his first assignment. He put you with Ava.
You talked to her about the song you were doing and then class was over. You grabbed your bag and walked out the classroom. Lily stormed down the hall with orange paint all over her. Reid had an amused look on his face.
Sophie said being a princess must sucked and you agreed with her.
The following day, you met up with Ava to work on the song. Ava yelled at you for singing it wrong and you told her it wasn't wrong. Ava said just because you were the princess she didn't have to listen to you and you said she was right but she was going to.
Ava took a step forward. "Or what?" She taunted. "You're gonna tell your daddy on me."
"No, I'm going to-"
I grabbed your arm, stopping you from moving closer to Ava.
"Maybe we should work on this another time." I suggested.
"That's the smartest thing to do right now." Ava said, grabbing her things and leaving the music room.
Once she left, you looked at me and you asked if you were right. I didn't respond and you sighed in frustration. You sat down and put the headphones on. You listened to a piece of the song before you repeated it back to yourself.
"Does it sound the same to you?" You asked.
"It's close." I replied back. "I wouldn't worried about it being the exact way."
"Can you feel the emotions?" You questioned.
I shook my head and said no. I told you not to work on it today and come back tomorrow when you weren't mad. You listened to me and we left the music room. I walked you to Lily's room and went to my room.
The reason why I told Ava to leave and for you to work on the song tomorrow was because, you didn't have control over you voice, yet. With one small wrong move, you could do damage. Your voice was your most powerful weapon. When you got angry it wouldn't be good. But for Ramadi it was all he wanted.
