Characterization

Asdfghjkl that picture ^^^^

Okay one of my biggest fears of fanfiction writing is characterization. It's totally different when you're writing original fiction and get to control the characters' motives,

How they do it
Why they do it
If they do it
When they do it
Where they do it
What they do

But when it's an already created character, sometimes it's so hard to write them realistically.

Easy Characters for me to write: (in somewhat of an order maybe??)
- The Eleventh Doctor
- The Winchesters
- Bill S. Preston and Ted "Theodore" Logan
- Castiel
- Garth Fitzgerald IV
- The Tenth Doctor
- Jedediah and Octavius (Night at the Museum)
- Jim Moriarty (I don't even know why he's easy for me to write)
- Captain Jack Harkness (just pure flirting)
- many Harry Potter characters

Harder Characters for me to write:
- Daryl Dixon (he has a snarky attitude but still cares, and his mannerisms are hard to nail down)

- David (The Lost Boys) (He has a charismatic aura and a very strange presonality. He's charming but dangerous. He's flirty but wouldn't fall in love easily. He's a leader who tempts danger and laughs in the face of his enemies. Like even I as a writer wouldn't be able to tell what he'd say next, and I'm the writer! Very hard personality to try and copy)

- Crowley (basically the same reason as David. He's snarky and charming but dangerous and frightening at the same time)

- Sherlock Holmes (he's basically way too smart for me to write asdfggdhdhkl)

- Rick Grimes (He is an amazing character and I love him and his psycho attitude but OMG is that ever hard to nail down and perfect. He's just...... plain crazy. And THAT is hard to do for me. Asdghfjkdldkl I love it though.)

- The Twelfth Doctor (Hes sassy but actually caring and sweet, but the way he speaks is pretty unique.)

***

Characterization bugs me because half of these characters, like for example, David, are leaders not followers, which means it would actually be hard to make them do anything for the sake of the plot unless they wanted to.

Like if the story required David to go here, but he didn't want to, he wouldn't. No persuasion. He just wouldn't go. So I can't make him.

And making him go would seem out of character, especially if someone demanded it.

Do you really think Daryl Dixon or David would do ANYTHING if someone demanded that they do it?

Asdfgghfjkdldkl.

And as for Sherlock, he's always one step ahead of the game. Nothing slips by him! He sees through everything, and it's very hard to always maintain his sassy, smart comments and have him pick up on everything. Cuz you know if he notices something, he's not going to ignore it.

That also eliminates all forms of plot twists because obviously Sherlock has accounted for that.

And making characters too unlike themselves or out of character doesn't seem realistic enough and people complain.

(No one has complained about my stories or characters seeming out of character but also my fics are not super duper well-read. But I do know of people getting complaints because the characters were not acting correctly.)
