Chapter 12 - A Kind Human

I suddenly awoke and shot straight up in my bed. I felt lighter than a feather. I looked around and realized I was in my room.

Holy shit, that dream was... I don't know. I guess I professed my undying love for Alphys? I mean, she is pretty cool, and it's not like it hasn't crossed my mind before..

Crap, what am I saying? Even if I did like her, even a little, there's no way she'd like me back. We're friends, and I'm more than okay with that.

Plus I have to stay focused on Chara.

Chara.

The more I thought about our incident, the more confused I get. I'm torn she backstabbed me, but at the same time I get so fucking angry. If Sans is right, she never cared for any of us...

I looked over at my clock. 3:00 am. Ugh. I fell back onto my bed, my head sinking into my pillow. I rolled around my bed, thoughts fumbling about in my head. I couldn't go back to sleep. After what felt like about an hour of restlessness I looked over to my clock again. 3:17 am.

Seriously?! Ugh. I might as well go out, better than flopping around in bed like a fish. Heh, Sans would have been proud of that one.

I walked outside and took a deep breath. The Waterfall's deep serenity entranced me. Wearing my leather coat I walked to a fence overlooking a waterfall.

I sighed, leaning against the fence.

"Ready for Round 2 Fish Face?" I heard a voice call from behind me. You've got to be kidding me.

"Chara. Leave, now." I said, my voice low.

"I saw you cry last time. Poor Undyne, sad over an 8 year old heartbreak." She mocked me, wiping her eyes with her fists.

"Chara." I hissed. Anger burned in me, wanting to fight her with all my might. But some part of me didn't want to hurt her at the same time.

"Don't worry, I won't kill you... yet. I won't even hurt you. As for your friends..." She trailed off.

"Don't you fucking touch them!" I yelled, rage inflamed my body, all the mercy I had just felt for her evaporated.

"I don't fucking care what you do to me, but if you touch any of them, I swear I WILL end you!" I spat. She could hurt me all she wanted, but my friends were everything to me. If she touched them... World War fucking III would break out.

"Hehe..." She walked up to me. I started feeling a little anxious, but wasn't willing to show her I had an ounce of nervousness.

"You don't even really exist. A figment of the past." I hissed through my teeth.

"Are you sure about that? Because I feel pretty real, and I know I look pretty real." She reached out and touched my arm.

"And I seem pretty real, huh?" She laughed.

"Just go." I said looking away from her. I heard no snarky response, I didn't hear any response. I didn't hear anything. I turned back to face her and she was gone, just like that. Crap, that's freaky. I noticed a nearby echo flower that seemed, strange. I walked over and bent down.

"I'll be back..." It whispered in the wind. Fuck, that was Chara for sure.

I tried to shake it off, but the feeling kept gnawing at me. The words she said were burned into my brain. I kept thinking of what she could do to my friends... Nothing. Nothing, she can't do anything. She. Isn't. Real.

I took deep breaths, but an eerie feeling still lurked over me.

I wasn't sure what to do about Chara yet, but once I figured it out, I'd have no hesitation.

---

Now being 2 in the afternoon, I was doing my training as usual. It was an on off thing. Some days I trained in afternoons, others mornings, and others nights. It all depended on when Paps wanted his next cooking lesson.

I was doing good old martial arts, kicking a dummy. It didn't feel as normal though. I couldn't stop the little voice in the back of my head worrying about Chara. The more I thought about it, the more I fought harder. Fighting distracted me. It also let me get out anger, or sadness, or any other random emotion I felt.

I was practicing in Snowdin today, trying to get used to fighting on all terrains. Snowdin's harder to fight in, the cold freezes up your body. But nothing muscle work won't fight through.

As I swung in for an uppercut I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It wasn't moving fast, but it was moving a little. I was a little suspicious so decided to investigate. I slowly walked over, approaching the figure.

"Hello?" I called. No response.

My heart dropped as I saw what it was. A human. The last human! The last human needed to free us all. They were curled in a ball, looking cold. But I needed their soul. Then everyone in the Underground could be free.

I immediately engaged battle. Their soul weakly came forth. Their eyes widened in terror. They were wearing a purple and blue striped shirt, and their soul was red. Yet again a new color.

I gave them first move, but they tried to spare me. Well, that was new. I shook it off and shot them with my first attack. They barely dodged the blue spears.

They once again spared me. Their short brown hair had icicles on the ends. They were shivering, barely able to dodge, barely moving any inches to defend themselves.

Spared again. What? Why aren't they fighting me?

I rose up some spears, and shot them down in a raining format. One of my favorite attacks, it was badass. They got hit twice, their HP disintegrating to less than half. They were sure to fight back this time.

Spared. Why, what are they doing?

"W-Why won't you fight?" I asked furious. They needed to fight, all humans fight. If they don't then...

"I-I-I" They shivered, reaching for their soul, tears forming in their eyes. Yeah right, I am not going to let freedom go that easily. I pulled it away from them and they collapsed to their knees.

"I w-won't fight y-y... you" They whispered, barely audible.

I threw a spear.

"Why!?"

"I don't w-want to hurt y-you." They sobbed.

"Yeah sure. How many monsters have you already killed!?! You're all evil." I hissed. Anger fumed within me. The thought of all the monsters already sacrificed to this little bastard infuriated me.

"N-None..." They whispered. They rolled over to dodge another spear. None... None? Yeah right.

I checked their LOVE- They had none. They had no EXP either. They really hadn't killed anyone... Oh my god.

"H-How many monsters have you spared?" I asked, not attacking this time.

"I... couple.. I d-don" They curled back into a ball, not willing to dodge anymore. They completely caught me off guard. No human's ever reacted this way before.

"J-Just do it." They cried. I left battle, and thrust their soul back into their body. I couldn't kill them, they hadn't done anything wrong... they spared... As I looked down at the helpless being, cuts on their arms, a giant wound in their leg, they were curled into a ball softly sobbing and freezing.

I walked over and picked them up. They flinched and closed their eyes sharply.

"Um... it's o-okay." I said, not sure how to be comforting. Fuck! Why wouldn't they fight. If they had fought I wouldn't feel so damn guilty about taking their soul, and freeing the whole Underground.

I wasn't sure if I should trust them... but I just couldn't kill them. They were so small, so helpless, so kind. They were willing to just give up their soul like that, just to escape hurting someone.

They clutched my shirt crying into my stomach. I lifted them up a little higher, tightening my grip on them. They welcomed by hold, and shifted in my arms.

I looked up, and ran faster than ever to Waterfall.

When we reached my house I cranked up the heating. I put them down on a chair in the kitchen.

"Here." I said, trying to hand them a jacket. The weakly reached out, but didn't have enough strength to grab it.

"Oh." I said looking down. I walked up behind them and put the jacket carefully over them and zipped it up.

"Okay, okay, you're gonna be fine." I said aloud, mostly to myself. I grabbed out some medical supplies and began tending to the smaller cuts on their arms.

"Okay, I am just going to fix your cuts okay?" I said quietly, looking up at them. They were still tearing a little bit. They hesitantly nodded. I guess even if they didn't trust me they didn't have much of a choice.

"Um, this might sting, a little." I said pulling out some disinfectant. I was scared to put it on them, this stuff could sting like hell.

I damped a towel with it and put it on their first cut.

They cringed and started crying a little harder.

"It's okay, it's okay." I said as I pulled off the towel and applied the bandage. I pulled the sleeve back down.

They looked up at me, their eyes filled with tears. Then, they hugged me.

I was stunned, and slowly hugged back. Even when freezing, they were warm, their kindness practically radiating off of them.

"Heh... you're a dork kid." I smiled.

I pulled away and they were smiling.

"Y'know kid. You're a wimp. But you're a wimp with a big heart" I grinned. They gently smiled once again.

They looked about 12 or 13. Young, but not they can't understand stuff.

"So you up to date with all the barrier soul stuff?" I asked. I didn't know if they did or not, if they didn't they would be very confused.

They nodded slightly, looking down.

"T-That's why y-you wanted to kill m-me." They silently said.

"But you haven't killed anyone. Which is why I spared you. I'll just wait for an evil human to fall down, and take their soul instead." I said still grinning.

I banaged them up and got down to their leg and didn't know what to do.

"Ouch, I got you pretty deep huh?" They nodded a little. Poor kid, damn I felt bad.

"Okay I gotta make a call. I don't wanna mess up this wound. I'm gonna call a good friend of mine." Alphys, of course, she'd be willing to help anyone.

Ring... Ring... Ring...

"H-Hello? Undyne?"

"Hey Al. So I got a predicament." I said looking towards the kid.

"I got a human an-"

"The last one to free us?!??" She said excitedly.

"I-I didn't kill them." I sighed.

"W-What?" She asked, her voice becoming much quieter.

"Al, they haven't killed anyone. They didn't even attack me! I can't kill someone innocent. Especially since they were freezing. I know, I'm fucking weak." I sighed once again.

"No, not at all... you're a good person, Undyne. I'm happy you didn't." I smiled, knowing Alphys was behind me on this decision made me feel better.

"But... in the process I got them pretty bad, mind coming over and checking it out?"

"S-Sure. Be right there."

"Thanks." I clacked my phone shut and sighed. Holy shit what a day.

I sat down across from them. They were starring at me.

"What?" I asked.

"You're looking at me like I'm part fish or something." I grinned. They giggled a little.

"Sorry about the fight kid. Y'know all the other humans fought, but you didn't. So, um, good going dork." I smiled.

"T-Thanks." They whispered, they were seeming to be coming a little less frigid. However their eyes were still tearing.

"So you got a name?"

"F-F-Frisk..." They said looking sad.

"What's wrong with that? That's a cool name." I said trying to lighten the mood.

"Undyne." I said introducing myself.

"U-Undyne... t-that's a c-cool name t-too." They smiled.

"Haha, thanks punk."

Alphys quickly arrived. I let her in,rushed in holding a medical kit.

"Nice." I said to her.

"Thanks. Where are they?" I pointed over to the table. The human started getting nervous and frightened.

Alphys kneeled down inspecting their injury. They looked up at me, lips quivering.

"She's cool." I told them. They calmed only slightly, but again they didn't have much of a choice.

"Hm... doesn't seem as bad as you thought, Undyne. Just needs some medical tape an- WoOoahh." Alphys cut herself off, saying "woah" very startled.

"Undyne! You should be worried about this!" Alphys exclaimed looking at their ankle. I bent down to see what she was talking about.

The area was all purple and bruised, and their was a red lash cutting around it.

"Woah, what's wrong with their ankle?" They looked down concerned, their eyes widened in fear when they saw all the bruising and damage.

"W-What's w-wrong?" They asked panicking.

"Frostbite." Alphys sighed.

"Frostbite? What the hel- heck is that?" I'd never heard of frostbite before. Also to note, trying to not swear around the kid's gonna be difficult.

"It's like when part of your body gets too cold, and well this happens. I could go into explanation but I think this is explanation enough. I-It's not too common in monsters, but I read up about it in the library..."

"Okay well great. What do we do?"

"Hmm... it didn't talk much about treatment but I think we sh-"

"W-Warm it f-first..." We barely heard the kid's whisper.

"What?" I asked looking up at them.

"Uh.. um..." They looked like they wanted to get up, but I think they were too nervous to. Plus their ankle was on the verge of dying. Okay maybe not but it sure as hell seemed like it.

"W-W-warm it." They said a little louder, still talking through tears.

"Undyne grabbed a hot water soaked towel."

"Alright." I said getting up.

"Here." I said handing it to Alphys, it was burning.

Alphys placed the towel around the kids ankle.

"Oww!!" The kid cried out in pain. I immediately went up next to them and tried to be comforting.

"It's okay, it's okay. Push through the pain now to save a longer pain later." They grabbed my arm and squeezed it, trying to distract themselves from the pain.

"Holy cow you got an arm." I laughed. I heard them giggle just the slightest.

Alphys and the kid worked together, very shyly I may add, to figure out how to fix the frostbite. By that I mean the kid told Alphys and Alphys did it. By the time Alphys was finished the kid was practically a waterfall.

"T-Thanks..." They whispered.

"Are you sure I did it right? You seemed to be pretty pai-"

"Alphys!" I cut her off. Mentioning pain was probably not a good idea.

"You alright kid?" They wiped away their tears and nodded.

"You're pretty tough, y'know that?" I asked.

"Heh. T-Thanks, Undyne." They smiled at me. Alphys and I talked to the kid for about 2 hours, getting whatever they needed, and just trying comfort them. She soon fell asleep. If Frisk was sleeping that meant she must've been somewhat comfortable.

"Phew." I sighed with relief.

"Thanks for helping Alphys, I know it's a pretty crazy situation."

"Y-You're welcome Undyne." She smiled.

"Y'know you're pretty awesome too." I smiled at her.

"Aw, Undyne stop." She blushed.

"You are too... for a fish." She laughed.

"Oh you're in for it." I laughed grabbing a pillow and smacking her with it.

"Undyne! Okay, you're on!" She said grabbing a pillow and hitting me back. It was hilarious.

I hit her again and she laughed uncontrollably.

We continued back and forth, I think I had height advantage though, hahah, of course I did. It was awesome.

"Alphys you're gonna lose!" I grinned.

"Yeah right, I'm winning Undyne!" I could barely see her smiling through the flying pillows.

After a while we both got pretty tired and collapsed onto the couch.

"Yeah, I won." I grinned.

"Haha, maybe you did. Or maybe you didn't! I think didn't is the correct answer."

"Oooo burn, you're feeling sassy tonight, huh?" I laughed.

"Hehehe. Oh my gosh! I just realized this was just like a scene from Mew Mew Kitty..." Alphys continued rambling on about her favorite anime. I could listen to her all day, which is exactly what I did.
