thirty four ; family

I feel nervous as I follow Ava and Draco Solo into their mud hut.

Brother and sister? Why would Kylo keep something like this from me?

For some reason, I think there's a lot of things he hasn't told me.

"Please, sit." Ava gestures to a couch diplomatically, lowering herself on a chair across from my sister and I.

Draco furrows his eyebrows goofily, realizing there's nowhere else to sit. He lets out a sigh and sinks down to the floor. Ava rolls her eyes.

"So dramatic." She mutters. Her chocolate eyes meet mine. I recognize them straight away.

Kylo's eyes.

"I suppose you want an explanation?" She infers, folding her hands in her lap. I glance at Draco, who's fiddling with something on the end table in front of him. He doesn't seem like the serious type, I realize.

"That would be nice." Seeder speaks in my place, sending me a pointed look. I hasn't answered right away, my eyes stuck on Kylo's brother.

When Draco finally notices my state, he smirks. I shake my head and turn back to the problem at hand.

I just can't get over how much he reminds me of him.

Although it is relieving to know there's at least one trait they don't share.

Kylo is definitely the serious type.

"Mali, pay attention." Seeder hisses, nudging my arm. I blink out of my stupor, shifting my gaze to the slight girl in front of me.

"So you're the one Ben loves." Ava states. I nod slowly, rubbing my palms on my pants. I wonder if they know?

About the baby, I mean.

"Wow." Ava's face contorts and she cocks her head slightly. Draco glances at her.

"W-what?" I sputter, totally confused.

"It's just, I never expected Ben to-"

"We thought it was impossible for Ben to love someone other than grandfather." Draco cuts in, grinning.

"Shut up!" Ava scolds her brother, slightly reddening in the face. They're quickly caught off guard when they notice my laughter.

By the time I'm finished, I bite my lip, registering the surrounding silence in the room.

"What? I thought it was funny." I explain, the corners of my mouth turned up. Draco's grin widens. He turns to his sister and taps her leg.

"I think we owe them that explanation right about now." He says. She nods, looking almost exasperated.

The two are polar opposites; I'm sure they argue constantly.

"Well, where do I start?" She sighs, relaxing her shoulders. I cross my arms over my chest, scooting away from my sister who'd started to lean on me. It's pathetic for her to think I would've forgiven her so soon and easily.

Taking me away from him was a much larger magnitude than she'd like to understand.

"Ben was born before us. He's about a year and a half older. We're twins, obviously." She gestures to the boy on the floor who's no longer paying any attention.

Twins do run in the family, then.

"Our parents had a great relationship, but it really depended on the fact that they weren't around each other often. Seeing as we were their kids, they wanted to spend time with us."

Draco sneezes; Ava sends him a glare.

"The original plan was to switch us every month. We were about 6 at the time, Ben was 7. Ben would stay with Mom on Endor while Draco and I would spend time with father on his smuggling trips, and vice versa. It worked well for half a year... but it really took a toll on Ben. We were meant to switch one day and Ben refused to board Dad's ship; said he never wanted to see him again. That he hated him." She shakes her head unbelievingly, as if she could never understand why someone could hate her father.

"Of course Mom didn't tell Dad. She claimed Ben was sick and that she had to keep him the next month to nurse him back to health. We left with dad. Ben was never the same after that. He was quiet and kept to himself. He barely uttered a word to Mom. It drove her crazy. She decided she couldn't take it and shipped him off to Uncle Luke to train to be a Jedi. We haven't seen him since." She stops, studying her nails. Draco's expression is solemn; he speaks up once she pauses.

"We heard everything, though. When he betrayed Luke and caused the second greatest Jedi massacre of all time, our mother decided to ship us away. To hide us. From him, and his rage. She couldn't take any chances of us being obstacles in his path of self-destruction."

"He contacted us about a year later. He said he meant us no harm. We didn't hear from him often, but we had hope he still had light in him. Of course we did. We loved him." Ava frowns, scratching her knee.

"We lost that hope 2 months ago when we learned he killed our Dad in cold blood." Draco visibly shutters and Ava tries to hide blinking back a tear.

"H-he killed his father?" I ask, horrified. The worst part was, I was there, at the base, when he did it, and I had no idea. Of course I was. Where else would I have been 2 months ago?

Draco nods.

How could I have not known?

You were distracted, a voice answers from the back of my mind. I bite my lip, realizing it was true.

"Anyway. He contacted about 2 days ago, begging us to take care of someone he loves. He refused to tell us why. We weren't sure if he was bluffing... he hasn't sounded so vulnerable since his childhood, before his ultimate downward spiral." Draco signals they're finished with a sigh.

I feel overwhelmed, relics of Kylo's- or Ben's- past floating in my mind.

It's as if I'm closer to him than I've ever been, and at the same time, I don't know him at all.

He's such a mess.

The feat of bringing the light out of him seems nearly impossible, but I have a new motivation not to give up on it.

"So, now that that's over, what do you say I show your to your room?" Draco grins, bounding to his feet.

He reaches forward for my hand to help me up and I give it to him. My eyes widen in surprise when he gives it a soft kiss. My cheeks go rosy in embarrassment and I mentally kick myself for doing this; it obviously encourages him.

I follow his tall form down a narrow hallway. He stops at a tiny room with sunlight streaming in through the windows. It's about a quarter of the size of Kylo's room; it's the exact size of my room at the Resistance base.

A comfortable warmth seeps into my skin and I let my limps sink into the bed, my sore muscles aching for one final time.

"Don't miss dinner." Draco calls, pulling the door shut.

I purse my lips, letting my eyes drift shut. I hope for a dreamless sleep.

I strangely begin to feel tingling in my temples. Something tells me that I'm not alone any longer.

Just as I start to drift to sleep, my body freezes. A soft voice echoes in my mind, sending shivers down my back, my eyes flying open.

"I'll see you again. I promise."

It's Kylo's voice.
