1 year later
Killian poured the milk into his bowl of cereal glancing up at the tv as the 10 o clock news came on. He looked back down at the cereal and sighed at the irony, He hated vampires, everything about them and here he was rising at night, and sleeping all day like them. All for this new job he’d let his friend Graham talk him into, It only took a year, to convince him and he was certain it was just the fact that he was promised a kill.
However as Killian looked back up at the tv and saw the portrait of the curly blonde headed girl with striking gray eyes on the TV he was reminded of his humanity.
“Today we remember the 1 year anniversary of the murder of deputy Sean Cole, and the disappearance of his 18 year old daughter Kassidy.” The reporter said solemnly as the camera panned over to the people in town square lighting candles in remembrance. There was another blonde girl holding a candle, on camera. The caption on the TV read Emma Nolan. Killian knew this was his new Bosses daughter. There were tears in her green eyes.
“I don’t know if you are out there Kass, but we miss you..” She said and wiped a tear from her eye. “Please come home.”
Killian turned the tv off and sighed shoving the bowl of cereal away having lost his appetite.
“She’s not coming home..” He scoffed. He knew the girl was more than likely dead, She was pretty, and vampires were twisted sons of bitches, he knew they liked to keep trophies sometimes. His fists clenched at his sides thinking of what that poor girl must have endured before she died. He walked over to the door and grabbed his coat getting ready to leave for his first day on the job.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Kassidy lounged in the living room watching the TV, She saw Emma and frowned.
“Miss you too Em..” She mumbled before someone stepped in the way. She looked up at James and quickly sat up straight.
“I wasn’t watching that. It..it just interrupted my program.” She said fearing what he may do. He hated it when she brought up anything about her old life, her human life.
“I’m not angry with you.” James smiled. “Today we are celebrating.”
“Celebrating what?” Kassidy asked dully.
“Your birthday, of course!” James grinned. “Happy birthday princess.”
Kassidy cringed, hoping he didn’t notice. She hated it when he called her that. She hated him.
“It...its not my birthday..” She said quietly looking down.
“Of course it is.” James said firmly. “Jack has gone out to get you something special.”
There was no telling what he meant. He was insane and so was Jack.
Kassidy had learned that James and Jack were actually very well known in the vampire community, and the human community. James was the leader, of all the vampires in the state of Maine. Or as he liked to call himself, the king. Making Jack, his queen and Kassidy the hidden princess.
Kassidy wasn’t allowed to leave, what so ever because if the humans found out she was turned, more specifically, if David found out what his brother had done, the entire Vampire state would lose their rights, and hunters would be able to kill freely again.
Siring was forbidden under human law, Humans felt like there was enough vampires, there didn’t need to be anymore. However there were clubs, and underground areas where humans begged to be turned for a chance at eternal life.
Kassidy didn’t understand why. She’d only been a vampire for a year and was already sick of it.
“Aren’t you excited?” James asked. Kassidy knew better than to tell him no. She’d learned to play along when she could stomach it.
“I..am but being that it is my birthday… Maybe I could make a special request?” She asked.
“What is it you want?” James asked. Kassidy stood up and approached him.
“Its just a small request...I was thinking maybe I could go outside..” She asked and looked up at him with a pout.
James frowned and ran his hand through her silky blonde curls.
“You know the answer to that princess.”
“Only for a little, just around the block you could even come.” Kassidy pushed.
“No.” James said his voice growing firm.
“What about just in the garden? For 15 m-”
James reared back and slapped Kassidy hard across the face.
“I said No!” He shouted at her.
Kassidy hated that her eyes welled, She hated that because he sired her, and in some way took care of her, it made her feel betrayed when he’d hit her. She hated that she cried in front of him and gave him even more power over her.
James sighed and pulled her close to him.
“Why do you make me do that to you, Kassi?” He asked. Kassidy pushed him away and ran up the stairs to her room slamming the door.
Kassidy paced back and forth in her room. Every, single day for the last year she had been confined to this stupid house, not allowed to leave or even mention leaving. The only glimpse she got of the outside world was through a window and the worst part of it all was she was stuck here, with them for eternity.
The only good thing about being a vampire, was on days when she just couldn’t handle it anymore, she could literally turn off her humanity. like a switch in her brain and she didn’t care about anything, or anyone. She could play the role in this twisted family she was forced to play with ease, but it never lasted. She dreamt of her old life often, her father, her friends. There was no way for her to completely shut it off. Even James and Jack had their moments where they seemed almost human, they were still strange but they were kinder.
Kassidy kicked her bed and screamed in frustration. The bed moved across floor revealing something she hadn’t seen before. She raised an eyebrow and walked over and knelt down on the floor running her hand over a strange change of pattern in the wood. She knocked on the hardwood flood and gasped. It was hollow. She hurried over to her bedside table drawer and opened it emptying it on the floor finding the crowbar she kept. It didn’t do too much damage, but she had used it to crack James in the skull a couple of times when he got too handsy. Vampires could still feel pain, so there was that at least.
She quickly picked up the crobar and crawled back over to the section of flooring she had just been. She looked all across the floor and mapped out a decent sized square patch of floor that was different from the rest. She found a divvit in the wood and put the crowbar in it and used it as a lever to pry the square patch of flooring up.
There was a set of stairs. How had she not noticed this before? She tossed the crowbar aside and wasted no time going down the stairs. She looked around the room. A human wouldn’t have been able to see anything but Kassidy could see in the dark just fine. There wasn’t much to the room, she wondered if Jack and James even knew anything about it. She didn’t care. This was her chance. She ran over to a window in the room and pried it open. The cool breeze hit her in the face as she climbed out of the window. She was free.
Jack returned home with a younger man in tow. His eyes were glazed over, and he was clearly compelled.
“Who is this?” James asked looking the man up and down. He had shaggy blonde hair and blue eyes.
“Kassidy’s ex boyfriend. She told me about him once, He was an ass, I figured he would make a nice gift for her. Where is the birthday girl?” Jack asked.
“Sulking in her room.” James sighed. “Maybe this will brighten her mood.” He smiled.
“Well come on! I can’t wait to see her face.” Jack grinned as she was dragging the boy up the stairs by the hair of his head.
Jack knocked on the door to Kassidys room.
“Kassidy, Can I come in? I have something for you.” She said. There was complete silence on the other side.
“Come on Princess, open the door.” James said.
Usually she would have at least screamed at them to go to hell at this point. James knew there was something wrong. He twisted the knob, breaking the lock and opened the door.
“Shes gone!” Jack said walking in the room looking down the set of stairs Kassidy had found. She turned and frowned at James.
“She left us.” Her face then became panic stricken.
“If anyone sees her..James! You have to find her.”
“Don’t worry.” James growled. “I will.”
“What should I do with him?” Jack asked pointing to the boy.
“Keep him here. She may be hungry when she gets home.” James snarled and walked out of the room.
---------------------------------------------------------
Killian walked into the station, and sighed. He hadn’t had an actual job like this, ever. He and his brother had always just hunted vampires and now here he was making sure the fanged freaks were abiding by the rules. As if that was possible. They always found a way to break the rules, now it was just easier for them to get away with it.
“Killian. Good to see you!” Graham greeted his long time friend.
“You too Humbert.” Killian nodded. “So what do we have?” He asked.
“Straight to business as usual Jones.” Graham chuckled and led Killian to David’s office.
David looked up from his desk and smiled before standing up and extending his hand.
“David Nolan.” He introduced himself. Killian shook his hand and nodded.
“Killian Jones.” He said and sat down across the from the desk taking note of the pictures on his desk. One was of him, and another officer, Another of him his wife and their daughter Emma and another picture of the girl he’d saw on the news this evening.
Dead girl.
“Is this the fallen deputy?” Killian asked pointing to one of the pictures on the desk.
“Yes, thats Sean.” David said sadly.
“And that would be..” Killian trailed off looking at the picture of the other girl. There Something about her, something he couldn’t quite put his finger on. Her eyes were striking, and her dazzling smile was intimidating even just in a picture. She wasn’t that much younger than he was. 5 years at most.
“That’s Kassidy. She’s the reason you are here.” David said.
“I thought I was here to find a vampire, and kill it.” Killian said flatly.
“Well.. yes, but the ultimate goal is to bring Kassidy home. She’s out there, I know she is.” David sighed holding the picture in his hands. The girl was like a niece to him, Kassidy and his Daughter Emma had grown up together, and Emma was absolutely gutted over what happened a year ago. She missed her friend.
Killian sighed this man was clearly in denial.
“Do you have photographs? Of the bite marks on Sean’s body?” He asked deciding it was best to try and avoid the subject on the girl all together.
David pulled open his desk drawer and pulled a file folder out and pushed it across the desk to him.
Killian looked at the photos closely.
“The bite marks make us think that it had to have been a newbie.” David suggested.
“And what makes you think that?” Killian asked looking up at David who looked taken aback by his question.
“Well its just, all bite marks I’ve seen from older vampires, are more precise. Planned. These marks look like he was attacked by a wild animal. Or in this case, a new vampire who hadn’t fed.” David shrugged.
“Vampires are clever. They can easily change their biting patterns for the purpose of throwing someone off their tracks.” Killian sighed and pushed the file back to David.
“Have there been anymore attacks since this?” Killian asked.
“No.” David replied.
“Thats all I needed to know.” Killian said and stood up.
“Well..where are you going?” David asked.
“To do my job?” Killian asked incredulously.
“You haven’t been assigned your location for the night, officer Jones.” David said cooly. “You aren’t a hunter here. You work for me, and we do this my way until we find out who it was that killed Sean, and took Kassidy.”
Killian rolled his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Fine, just tell me where you’d like me to go and waste my time patrolling for miscreant vampires.”
“You’ll be with Graham, patrolling the park.” David said narrowing his eyes. “You’re dismissed.”
“Brilliant.” Killian scoffed and walked out of the office with Graham.
Once he and Graham were walking around the dark park Killian stopped and turned to Graham.
“I know you’re a smart lad. I know you know we aren’t bringing this girl home.” He sighed. “Please tell me you understand that.”
Graham sighed heavily. “I don’t want to believe it. Kassidy was a friend of mine, She was friends with a lot of people, the whole town searched for her for 2 weeks. She was a bit of a wild child, but she was good when it counted.” Graham smiled.
“But you understand how this looks?” Killian asked.
“I do..” Graham mumbled. “But I can’t tell David that.”
“The man is living in a dream world Graham, That girl is dead. If this was a new vampire like he suggests, she was likely dragged off and killed and her remains would be unrecognizable by now. But if its an older vampire, if this was planned like I think it was..”
“Don’t.” Graham said sharply.
“Graham, she’s a pretty girl.. You kno-”
“I said don’t!” Graham snapped. “I get it, you hate vampires, its questionable if you even like humans at this point. That girl did a lot of good in this town. That girl, has a fucking name and she was loved by so many people and if you are going to be working here you are going to need a little more tact or these people will chew you up and spit you out. You don’t think I know she’s dead? I know!” A tear rolled out of Graham’s eye.
“You.. were involved with her.” Killian sighed. “Bloody hell.. I’m sorry Graham.”
“I was the one who was working patrol that night when she wanted to go to the vampire bar with her friends I was the one who looked the other way when she flashed her fake ID. If it was a vampire who saw her in the bar.. Its my fault because I shouldn’t have let her in there..I know what goes on in those places.”
Killian didn’t know what to say without hurting his friends feelings, to him, nothing Graham had said was a lie, If this is what happened, it was his fault. He was an officer, and he failed to do his job because he wanted to look cool for his girlfriend.
Killian’s whole body tensed as he felt like he was being watched, being a hunter, he knew when he was the one being hunted, and it wasn’t a good feeling.
“Shhh...” Killian whispered.
“What is it?” Graham asked.
“Theres a vampire nearby. Hiding.”
“Killian, there are vampires all over the place, they’re allowed to be out and about like everyone else.” Graham sighed.
“Then tell me, why is this one hiding?” Killian asked and raised his eyebrows. He put his hand on his gun that was secure in the hoster on his hip and turned, trying to figure out who was watching them, and where they were watching from.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The sounds of the outside world had overwhelmed Kassidy, so she had retreated to the park, where it was all quiet. She sat on a swing just enjoying the breeze, and the smell in the night air. She realized how much she took for granted when she was a human, and free to roam.
Kassidy was startled by the sound of footsteps. She jumped off the swing and sprinted to the nearby tree, leaping to the low hanging branch, and scurrying up the tree like a scared cat to watch from above. She frowned, as she heard Graham’s voice. Their secret romance was short lived, and never had much of a chance and with time, she’d almost forgotten about him, the feelings she once had for him didn’t exist anymore, and it made her sad.
Noticing He wasn’t alone, she focused in on the dark haired man he was walking with. There was something alluring to her about this mans presence and and when he spoke, his voice was beautiful to her ears and she didn’t understand why she had such strong feelings for a man she’d never in her life met. She slowly started to climb down from the tree, standing behind it now watching them, listening to them from far away.
Hearing Graham blame himself for what happened to her was heartbreaking. It wasn’t his fault, it was hers. She quickly ducked behind the tree hearing the dark haired man tell Graham to be quiet. She felt the nervous energy coming off of him in waves as he began to look around. How did he know she was there? She hadn’t made a sound.
Graham and the other man had began making their way towards the tree. Graham wouldn’t hurt her. Maybe this was her chance. He could help her, and this other guy he wore a badge too. Maybe she didn’t have to hide anymore. She went to step out from behind the tree but there was a hand that was clasped over her mouth and one squeezing her throat. The bark from the tree tore into her shirt and dug at the skin of her back.
She looked into James’ dark, and dangerous eyes. He didn’t speak but she could hear his voice in her head.
If you make one sound. I’ll kill them both, and then you.
Kassidy nodded compliantly with tears stinging her eyes as James held her tightly and fled the park with her.
-------------------------------------------------
Graham had turned away from the tree for just a moment but Killian had his eyes locked on it.
He could have sworn he saw a flash of blonde hair and then it was suddenly gone. He quickly ran and searched around the tree and absolutely no one was there.
“Bloody hell..” He sighed.
“What is it?” Graham asked.
“Nothing. I thought I saw someone.” Killian shrugged.
“You’re slipping.” Graham smirked.
“Piss off.” Killian scoffed.
“I was kidding, you grumpy bastard.” Graham sighed and walked away from the tree.
Killian searched the tree over again.
“Well.. hello.” He mumbled and plucked a couple stands of blonde hair out of the tree bark. Someone had been watching them.
But who?
